Calipers are MUCH cheaper than your time. Use the calipers to scribe if it saves time, it just makes sense.
100%, especially on aluminium.
Cheap ($12-15 on sale) digital calipers are surprisingly accurate and repeatable, and at that price they're disposable. Just select ones with a locking screw since that's important for this use. If scribing dulls the tips, they can be easily resharpened if you use a grinder carefully on the angled faces and not on the parallel faces. I don't cringe at all-scribing is what I always thought those sharp points are for!
I use cheap calipers for scribing and good ones for machining.
Dykem is cool for laying out large areas, but it is too messy for small jobs.
Correct ✔️
I’m a hobbyist, not a pro, so time doesn’t cost me any money…but it does cost me time. I appreciate your videos.
Thanks Aaron! I’ve been a machinist since 1984 and I have always used my older worn caliper for layout work. It is just so much faster and more accurate! When the tips get worn, I just lightly grind the angle part until I have a new crisp point for layout work. Cheers! 👍Don
About the calipers, because it seems to get a lot of panties in a knot.. there are actual scribe calipers which have carbide jaws specifically designed to scribe material with.
Second; thanks for sharing these videos. I really like the Q&A narrated style videos. Keep up the good work.
Greetings from the Netherlands, Mark
Many times on my channel I mark with a caliper and I also have comments that it is for measuring, not for drawing. But it is much more convenient and faster. I prefer to spend money on a new one from time to time and save my time while working. Exactly as you say, it is much faster and simpler.😉
Excellent presentation. Thank you. Really enjoying these recent posts.
I 100% agree with you.
I like the smell of Dykem, but a Sharpie is way faster and more practical; which is why I use it 90% of the time. Also don't hesitate using a cheap pair of calipers to make layout lines. Keep the good Mit's aside for making critical measurements. Good episode!
You're the man. Your skills, experience and advice is top class.
By the time you unscrew the Dykem cap you can be halfway done with your layout operation
1000% agree with the entire vid and tips and tricks. Cheapo calipers dedicated to scribe work especially for aluminum. By the time you wear them out they will have paid for themselves 1000s of times over.
All of your videos are great but i do like the addition of this format. Also, you are spot on about all points made in this vid.😎
Great video well said and well demonstrated.
I will say the spray version works quite well on normally clean aluminum. Use it when i am manual matching aluminum.
A little acetone cleans it up fast so long as you were not trying to paint it like an old car door.
I like dykem because it lets me look like I know what I’m doing 😂
I didn't know you can talk! I like it.
So yeah, more videos like this.
Thank you for creating and sharing. Honestly, your videos are so exceptionally beneficial and have helped me a great deal with my fabrication. Love the new format, as having your narrate really adds a massive amount of educational impact. I have no doubt you'll have a million + subscribers in no time. 🙂
You do top notch work, I think the liquid Dycam had its purposes but the shop I work in makes hundreds of parts and we found the blue spray on aluminum works the best because its and even coat with a consistent color no voids like the brush But were it really shines is when you have to make a precision part and you are using and optical center punch , its a game changer and its all done by laying out the proper lines using nothing more than calipers and a optical center punch ...
I’ve been using a 3.2mm tungsten as a scribe for years one of the best scribes I’ve ever used lol
This is the difference between “book smart” and “experience smart”
Great video! Keep doing these "comment busters" it's great content and very informative!
Sharpie and cheap calipers are the way to go. I use the butts from filler as a scribe, they get dull quick but it's scrap at this point already.
I buy tools to save time and effort.
thank you! Just chucked out my bottle of Dykem and my cheap un-sharpenable scribe
Sharpy is the way to go. I used dykem once. still have a bottle that 20 years old and counting... Great vid, thank you... Cheers from Canada...
First thing I do when I get Dykem is to swap out the factory brush head for a fine natural hair brush head from the dollar store. Works great and you only have to do it once.
Always love your work
Chef's Kiss for having 6061 on the calipers to begin with. 👌🤌
I always use a sewing gauge and a scribe or a very thin marker. It squares your marks up if the edges are straight.
When i have no scribe at hand and i need one, theres always an old M4/M5/M6 tap lying around that i can sharpen and use as a scribe.
This year i bought a scribe from Pica marker, they finally have one. This thing is fantastic. Mild steel, aluminum, C45, stainlesss, nothing seems to harm that tip.
The "Magnum" Sharpies work well for sheet metal marking along with your favorite caliper.
I really like these kinds of videos.
More please.😊
Dykem has its place, it doesn't wipe off as easy. Red Dykem also hold up better to heat for grinding to a line. Most of the time in the tool and die shop we just use our calipers and a sharpie and not one of the 4 x 8-foot granite surface plates.
A combo or double square + scribe is the way to go on flat material. Not so fussy as a rule, and won't ruffle feathers like calipers. For round stock on the lathe, I prefer to use hemaphrodite/odd leg dividers. There's an extra step there, setting the gap against a rule, but I feel more confident scribing a legible groove without damaging a more expensive tool.
Paul's convinced me im buying an extra set of callipers 😂 try the dye mark lay out fluid come in big bottles and apply it with a rag or a roller that little brush and bottle is useless its also terrible to clean so only use it when you really need it takes alot of gun cleaner and alot of rags to clean that stuff and can mess up painting later on if not cleaned properly
Measure with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon and cut with a blow torch.
Our joke was, dimension to a 1/16", measure to an 1/8", mark with a chalk, cut with a torch and then shim to fit and paint to match. 🙂
I used a sharpened tungsten and a drafting lead holder to make my own scribe. Drafting lead is around 2.2mm so a 3/32 tungsten rod would fit near perfect.
I really dig the format! If I’m going for speed I always go blue sharpie. If I have time to actually enjoy making the part I’ll do the dykem. I can see scribe lines a little better because of the darker color, but really just love the color against bare stainless or aluminum! Like, I want some actual paint that will look the same, love it.
I have used it a couple of times as a ninja quick sealing coat on a couple of dies I made that it may be another few years before I need them again. I even threw a botched one in my “tiny steel” scrap bucket just to how it held up. It has done shockingly well for rolling around in various shapes with burred edges and the good dies were still rust free (last I checked) after probably 5 years. I did clean the parts with acetone first, but still it’s pretty sweet for how fast it was with minimal prep to preserve a precision part and just as fast to remove when needed.
Calipers are consumables. I use them anytime they are convenient. Good video.
The 'box store' calipers are so cheap and accurate enough nowadays that you can have a throwaway set just for marking.
I use a set of carbide tipped verniers with a mega sharpie, so no need for a scribe most of the time.
More videos like this please. It's down here in the comments like you asked now It's up to you to fulfill our agreement. 👍😊
Awesome as always
Thanks for the video. Keep on doing videos like this we love it.
Another great video!
A scribe tip will be tungsten carbide, vs the tungsten alloys that make up tungsten electrodes. Not gonna matter on aluminum, but may on other materials.
Paul's brother.
Tungsten alloy with 98% tungsten. Close enough for scribing, don't you think?
If it did matter on anything at all, it would matter more on aluminum, as it is quite picky about contamination. However, it doesnt........
@@321ooo123 On the Moh's scale, Tungsten is about 7.5. Tungsten carbide is about 9.5, close to diamond. So yes, a Tungsten electrode will work just fine on annealed steels and hardened aluminums. I have yet to wear out a Tungsten carbide scribe.
Good video as always👍
Ive been using the caliper like that for over 20 years. Seems fine to me as well. Never had an issue.
Very informative video. Thanks!
Another great video. Keep it up with a sharpie and the tungsten
I love your videos.
Great video!
I wish I could click like twice
Keep them coming
I agree with you totally 👍
Try red Sharpie contrast is better.
Naa, not on aluminum. Red is much harder to see IMHO. Blue stands out far better. Same with Dykem. They have red also, but the scribe is MUCH easier to see on blue, hence it always being far more popular than red. Maybe you have a discrepancy in your vision that makes red more visible to you. I think 99.8% of people who have used both colors will disagree with you.
To each their own, I use the calipers too.
I'm going to start!
Exactly.
Completely agree.
In complete agreement with you! Thx
In 30 years, I've never cursed at spilling a sharpie.
I've also seen a guy apply dykem to a part in a spinning lathe. he was too close to the action to even notice the blue stripe forming on the machine, floor, and himself until he stepped away
in sheet metal we always used the super fine tip sharpies for everything, scribing is too permanent when the print is wrong half the time anyways, takes forever to sand those marks out.
I understand not dragging a caliper tip through mill scale on hot rolled steel, but aluminum is pretty soft
And…..thats how the pro’s do. Thanks for the video’s.
Haters will hate.... Hi Paul!
Nice video sir
White correction marker won't burn off-quite useful for cutting other than Al.
Definitely calipers and a Sharpie. Dykem is great if you're laying out large areas, then spray Dykem, is better.
Wont be long now till we get a face reveal haha! Finally got him talking
not only that you cant put a dye chem bottle in your apron pocket 😎👍🏼but a sharpie you can
I get such a kick out of people that rant and rave about scribing with calipers. Who Cares? they are your calipers not theirs. Stop telling us experienced people that use our tools every day and have for years what is right and wrong. Most of us know the limitations of things. Time is a huge factor like you say. Having said that, in the old days they used a marking tool. Which was a graduated beam and a sliding point. you set it for your dimension and draw your line. I would imagine they still sell them someplace.
Well roaster ✌️
Do you have a Amazon link for Dykem? 🤣
I've used a cheaper pair of calipers and a magnum sharpie for years to do some quick layout and it works great!
I'm a dial-scribe kind of guy myself. haha
Keep up to cool and entertaining content.
It was almost painful watching the dykem process, I even have a caliper with a built in roller and adjustable length scribe, which is great for reaching down over a rounded edge.
Dykem will flake up if you apply it too heavily then try to scribe it. There must be an art to using that stuff. I like the spray cans better but haven’t bought any in years. Fine point Sharpies are good enough for my layout work.
Also, thanks for giving me a use for all this 1/8” tungsten I have
There is an art to using Dykem.
I use a cheap set of calipers on mild steel, faster and more accurate than a felt pen or soapstone.
Does blue Sharpie work better than a black Sharpie? Does rubbing alcohol remove blue as quickly as it does with black?
Exactly what i do, 😊
Beautiful!! 🤣
I've always used my calipers for marking things. They are far harder than anything I ever cut and they only cost like $25.
Seriously? A set of calipers from Harbor Freight are like $9. With free tape measure. Dykem used to have a dauber. Or a fat Sharpie. Carry on Sir.
Yeah man
👍
Ive got a set of those MAGNUM sharpie markers and I find they work better than dychem. Why doesnt dychem make a decent layout marker with a 3/4" wide chisel tip like the sharpie??
👏
Swapped my dykem brushes with PVC primer balls, much happier using it
YES. There was a time when dykem came with those.
I noticed you had 1K ‘likes’ and not a single ‘dislike’…fuck that guy😆
It's funny how everyone has an opinion on everything on the internet. Instead of taking it in and trying it out. They would rather bitch and complain. Don't worry about the haters or complaining. All your content is awesome and informative. Keep up the good work. I have been a fabricator for 8 years already and still love hearing different ways of doing things. And to paul stop being a bitch. Don't watch if you don't like it
Have you seen the "blow some ink out of the nib of your Sharpie" trick? For when you need to cover a little more area than a line?
No, but i'm pretty good at polka-dotting my whole table if the tip dries out and I try to revive it by shaking the sharpie from the opposite end
@6061 Adam the machinist has a good short about it.
I just bought a dozen sharpes...😂😂
Poor Paul
Did that HTP welder not work out? I need a new welder and was looking at getting the HTP. Thoughts?
The Miller Dynasty welds a bit better under certain circumstances, and I like the front panel layout better.
The HTP seemed to be a pretty good machine though.
I eventually lose the battery cover on the cheap ones. then it becomes my scribe
Refill empty markers with Dykem. Best of both worlds.
Metric 👍
BuT 6061! DoN't YoU CoNtAmInAtE ThE TuNgStEn WhEn ScRiBiNg?
so i did it before a snowfalke gets the idea 😂
Lol, lmao!!
Aluminum oxide is much harder than steel so you are definitely dulling the point on those calipers, but time is money.
"Use your sandpaper like someone else is paying for it." Applies to lots of things. Nickel and diming over disposable items is just as wasteful as throwing them away too freely. An extra minute spent scribing in every hour adds up to a minimum of 40 minutes a week completely wasted.
Seem aluminium oxide is much harder than steel, I might go make a scriber out of aluminium, cheers mate 😅
That's not how that works... The aluminum oxide may be harder, but the aluminum is not. You can't scribe with a piece of aluminum because the aluminum under the oxide layer will deform. So, the aluminum oxide is still abrasive to the steel even though the steel deforms the aluminum underneath. @@Welder-wt4ib
that dye spreads awful. use the spray. it doesnt need toncompletly dye the srf
Best apology video since- ua-cam.com/video/Y5d8L-g5Ywg/v-deo.html
👍👍👍👍👍
I use a sharpie 99% of the time but it is erased by cutting fluid.
I laugh every time I see someone making the comments against calipers as scribes.
About the only ever remotely valid argument would be COS induced error from not being perfectly perpendicular and square but hell, we're talking a few 10ths to maybe a thou or two... if your need to be that accurate, you shouldn't be doing scribed hand layouts to begin with.
And yeah, just have good pair for machine work and a cheapo pair for layout work.
