  • Why do some countries, such as China and Russia, stand outside of the liberal international order and oppose values that the West takes for granted - values such as liberty and democracy? For the late Professor Christopher Coker the answer lay in the rise of a new political entity, the civilizational state. In an episode of LSE iQ which explored China’s position in the world in the coming century, Professor Coker talked about this, the potential for war between the United States and China and what that might look like.
Christopher Coker, was Professor of International Relations at LSE for almost four decades, and co-Director of LSE IDEAS, LSE’s foreign policy think tank. He was a scholar of war and warfare. This episode of LSE iQ is a lightly edited version of our 2019 interview recorded before the COVID pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is dedicated to his memory.

Asking why China and Russia reject the liberal world order and western values is the modern equivalent of missionaries asking why indigenous peoples rejected Christianity. Western proselytizing takes different forms throughout the centuries, but the modus operandi is always the same, namely: convert or face aggression.

The problem with conversion oriented religions is that you can convert into, and then change your mind, and convert out. Europe converted to Christianity around AD 400 … it has practically converted out today in 2024.

@@sas3475 I beg to differ. Lots of foreigners live in China and love it. Besides millions of Chinese have travelled abroad and gone back to China and just like Snowden hates America, some Chinese also hate China. But from what we've seen, the Chinese have as much freedom as everyone else and certainly no complaint regarding censorship when we can all see the kind of twisted censorship being applied in the West on its citizens.

I have recently returned from a 3-week trip to Europe - visiting Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, England and Albania. It is clear to see while Ireland and England were once an upon a time rich and glorious, it has been in steep decline in the past few years. Expensive housing where young people cannot afford to even pay the mortgage and older people are driven to live on the streets in tents. High inflation due to high interest rates and energy prices are making people poorer. Meanwhile, if one step off a Chinese or an East Asian airport, one will see Spanky clean train, highways, housing, malls, buildings and happy people all around. Guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating. If I am a Chinese or a east or southeast Asian today, if I were to choose a political system to adopt, it is clear that the old liberal order system is failing and not delivering for the average man in the street. It is time to stop demonising other political economic model and really think about fixing all the failings of the liberal order - wake up and look at yourself in the mirror!
