Is there possible that the topic sentence and the thesis statement be on the same paragraph? In the introduction of the research paper?

Definitely split up the thesis statement (which belongs in the introductory paragraph) and your topic sentences (which belong at the start of each body paragraph). You should FOREGROUND the topic sentence ideas in your introduction but that is not the same as replacing!
