Yes, I read and take notes on what I read. In the notes I speculate on how the research furthers my thinking and how it can be used. You should read first, write second. The only use for research is to support something you've already said in your own words.

It sounds like you are holding to a negative view of yourself as a student and a learner. These emotions and fear are not reality. The reality is that anyone with normal intelligence can learn and advance in higher education. Please don't let your past experiences take away from a future full of possibilities.

Sometimes negative thoughts from our past become like a tape recorder playing the same message over and over no matter how much our lives have changed, no matter how many challenges we have met and overcome. Keep moving forward, keep building up the successes. Soon there will be a different message playing on repeat!

Thank yoy david!! The most organized and easiest teaching about academic writting i have seen. I would just like to say, having moved to UK 9 years ago, american instructors always always explains topics better, they are organized, simple and they do not beat around the f bush. Everytime a uk lecturer explains something i have to repeat it in bullet points again (reflecting back in a way) to either the instructor themselves or a colleague. I meet british teachers who explains things very well...but! Very rarely..
Fantastic video, providing an overview of a formula that I will certainly start using to write my essays and blogs. One thing I'd like to point out, however, is phrases like "in sum" and "in conclusion" -- at least in my collegiate experience -- were always frowned upon. I would often leave them out altogether. The conclusion sentence in the body of David Taylor's example reads just as fine without the clichéd transitional phrase, "In sum."

Oh my gosh thank you so much my teacher explained how to write an essay in a short 3 slide slideshow, and then got mad when the entire class failed and didn't know how to write essays
