Imagine back in the 1600s when that castle was surrounded by nature and dirt paths and trees everywhere. People getting around by horse and by foot. Today, you see residential homes and cemented roads right next to it and cars driving by. What a time warp!
Out of all the oldest abandoned castles you have shown us, this one appears to be the most solid structurally and should be a priority to be fully restored to its past grandeur! All the art, antique furnishings, stonework and millwork inn the castle is enough to overflow a museum, the castle could easily become a destination resort.
An amazing tour, Lesley! You have inspired me to do some research again! It appears that Christopher Atkins, the owner, bought this chateau in Wallonia (southern Belgium) in 1999 as a restoration project. He owned 3 antique Galleries in central Brussels between 1973 and 2003, specialising in 17th to 19th century furniture from England, France, and Holland. He was highly respected - senior Consultant to the Royal Chamber of Belgian Antique Dealers for 20 years. But by 2010 he had set up an art gallery in Beijing [Atkins & Ai Gallery] with the beautiful Emily de Wolf Pettit. The restoration project never got completed . . . . a couple of details of interest - the baby grand piano was made in London by Marshall & Rose, and dates about 1930. The metal coat of arms you found is the Royal Coat of Arms of England, supported by a lion and a unicorn - and the framed picture is of Queen Mary, mother of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
There is also a legend about a French nobleman who was imprisoned in the Bastille. It is believed ge invented the game in the 18th Century. Although historically the 1st depiction of the game and its rules date back to 1687 in France. 🇫🇷 🎉

The majority of us live our small little lives and cherish our family heirlooms and photographs. It’s hard to imagine that no cares for the beautiful objects left behind. How sad. Thank you for showing parts of the world through your eyes and camera lens! God bless! 🇺🇸
I'm so impressed wirh this wonderful Belgian castle!😍 I love the artwork and all the antiques left behind! Splendid photos ,as well! Thank you ,Lesley, for this great journey back in time!
What a wonderland this castle is :) I can't believe a multi decade castle is in such good shape. I was blown away by the Arms room with all of its sculpting on the walls especially the village with the surronding wall. If that picture was Christophe, he certainly looked like a pleasant gentleman. The Paintings are so nice. This place is so vast and grand. Everything is just a work of art there. Thank you so much for sharing this fascinating castle with us.
Yes it means the roof is probably very solid. But it was probably bought in 1999 only (see above) to restore by the family mentioned which is not that long ago.

This castle is massive and extravagant. This beauty is abandoned and forgotten. But it's not a joke to maintain such a huge place. Thanks for sharing Lesley. Great place. How it looked in its prime.
What a stunningly beautiful place ❤. I can’t help it, I’m always saddened when these places are left to decay. Why oh why wouldn’t the family let the town sell whatever is salvageable? Excellent explore, thank you ❤️🇨🇦
It needs a lot of work and money to re store that place. It’s been neglected and should be restore to it’s noble letters. If I was a millionnaire, I would buy a place like this for the community because this belongs to country’s history 😊
What a fascinating place Lesley. It must have been an amazing home back in the day. The cell in the basement with the spooky door was awesome! Thanks for taking us along.
This place is amazing and all the beautiful antique furniture. If they sold the furniture maybe they could afford to restore the place. Really enjoyed seeing this fantastic place. Thank you for showing it.
Marshall and sons was a British brand and that piano here is probably worth a lot of money, because the firm does not exist anymore since 1998 and they were known for building very durable and high quality pianos. Great find👌😍👌
The board game with the marbles is called Solitaire. Not Chinese checkers as some have said. Chinese checkers is a star shaped board. This is a totally different game. I Played both growing up in London, UK
Since Christopher Atkins first established his gallery in the centre of Brussels, which grew to three galleries on the Chaussée de Charleroi and Avenue Louise from 1973 - 2003, he has been known for his considerable dynamism and depth of knowledge. A specialist in the purveyance of 17th, 18th and 19th century English, French and Dutch furniture, as well as ethical restoration, Christopher was widely recognized for his expertise:- as the Senior Advisor to the Royal Guild of Flemish Antique Dealers from 1980 - 1990, Senior Consultant to the Royal Chamber of Belgium Antique Dealers for twenty years and requested to vet dealers for major international fairs, for instance Brussels International Fair. Christopher’s profession also allowed him to enter into ethical restoration as well as real estate where there was several common denominators. Throughout his real estate projects, undertaken either for his own company or for clients, Christopher was consulted for conservation projects, including Stonehenge in the UK and he dedicated years to the faithful and painstaking restoration of his historic property in Wallonia, Southern Belgium.
According to an article in the newspaper Le Soir from 2003, it was Christopher Atkins, British antiquarian established in Brussels, who bought the castle in 1999, "the Weapons Room" enjoys an exceptional Heritage classification in Wallonia...
The pictures from 1903 were fascinating! So cool to find so many pictures left behind, especially of the castle in it’s glamour days. How many rooms do you think this castle has?
Your videos transport me to that place. I see that you are a very respectful person with the place and its architecture that you really enjoy. I have to admit as a technical architect and a student of interior design, it makes me very sad to see places abandoned and decaying with the passage of time. But then I think that each of these buildings has a story to tell and that if they had not been abandoned we would never have known them. Thank you very much for your excellent videos. I wanted to make a contribution: at minute 45:02 that is not a family coat of arms, but the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom.
Hey Lesley, Oh my, what a breathtakingly beautiful room! That really is looking so absolutely like a legit step back in time. A time capsule with apparently a completely preserved historical interior. So completely amazing! - Beautiful furniture, the clock on the mantlepiece of the chimney, the painting of the lady in a historical attire, the decorations of the walls, etc. etc.! - Of course I especially love the grand piano! Woow, Lesley I am already so excitred to see and hear more about that wonderful abandoned Camelot castle. See ya soon, bro! - Peace and kindest regards.
Hello my friend! I've been calling for help for centuries and no one has heard me yet. That bad boy Martin Homegardener claims I don't exist. That's why I feel like a dead person. Can you please help me? Please, please bring me back to life!
I've read the comments, you have brought the world together ❤️ to take trips to a time long ago with you. I love the family pictures. Imagining every day life inside the castle grounds. I'm from Florida in the USA. Thank you.
You, bros of decay are the best. I can tell that you truly care about the abandoned places you go to plus you love sharing it with others. You’re genuinely precious people and should be proud of your achievements.
It must have been a jewel once upon a time. Those stuccos and carvings, the frescoed ceilings and all those little details are so unique. The castle has so much history. It absolutely must be preserved.
The beauty and the wonder of everything still there like it is a time capsule is truly remarkable. It's like stepping back in time when you walk in. I wish I could imagine what the outside beyond the castle would have looked like.
Love the architecture of the castle specially fireplace all around the castle, the high ceiling and beautiful courtyard, it must be rich and epic back in the days, surely got so many stuff around and in the castle, beautiful antique pieces for some of future, it must cost a lot of money to maintain this place, thank you for sharing very interesting and beautiful indeed
I have been watching your show for some time. This show is the best one I have watched. The beautiful castle made me speechless. Thank you so much for doing what you do
I love the way those old stairs were made. The rise is very short and the run was very, very wide making the stairs much easier to walk up and down. I can see that the stairs would take more space in the house or building, but they were so much easier to walk up and down.
Thank you Leslie for another beautiful place. And finding humor with this one owner and his lovers, you have a good way of expressing/explaining things that can bring a smile. Again so sad to see photos and antique furniture being ruined. Safe travels, again thanks.😊
Hi Lesley, In Belgium started 1633 & left in 2017...So sad someone needs to Restore this Beautiful Castle!! I Love all the Beautiful Antique Furniture & Paintings!! Now from the very start entering thru the basement, had a sink & a man`s toilet! The Arms room was so Unique!! Never saw a Iron Waffle Maker, by the Fireplace!! Love All the Fireplaces!! 2 Basements & 3 Floors!! Love all the bedrooms, the first room was small, but Bed was big! Upstairs: I don`t think the stroller was for child to use, I think it was for baby! Wow 500 acres of Land & Castle!! You talked about Cairo, Egypt ..in America my state Illinois, is Southern Illinois is Cairo, Illinois...lots of vacant property there! Thanks so much Lesley, to show us such a Beautiful Belgium Castle!!😘 Love , from Central Illinois America🥰❤
This is absolutely fantastic. I’ve been watching you for quite a few years now and this is like the best explore that you have ever done. This place is amazing.
Thanks again for a wonderful experience. And for sharing this beautiful castle with us. Enjoy your exploration each time especially when it’s a beautiful place. Take care Your friend, Bonnie 😊🥰👏👏👏
How are you Danny and Lesley, thank you for bringing us with you exploring all this wonderful things that we see, I’m so grateful, and appreciated all you do, god blessed you my friends, my opinion I think it’s worth to keep all this great things if they could build a massively strong building to keep all this ancient stuff, for the next generation by generations for them to see, i believe it’s very positive admirable, encouraging and enjoyable to see and do for life.
I truly love watching you because of the excitement of it for you. I love your voice and the ways you narrarate the history for us. Your my favorite. My hisband enjoys now also. Greetings and prayers from S.C. America
the game is solitaire.. fairly common. starting with all holes populated except the one in the middle, the goal is to remove all the pegs or marbles , leaving one in the middle. you move by hopping over a piece to an empty hole, removing the piece you have "hopped" over. spent many a wet week in caravan in Devon playing this game.
What a magnificent castle, it’s beautiful! I loved everything about this castle, the architecture, antique furniture, beautiful artwork, and the plaster carvings I the weapon room was simply amazing! What a shame this has been abandoned. I do believe that was a prison cell, 😬 I hope someone will restore the fabulous castle. This is one of my favorite videos. Thank you Leslie and Danny for showing us this magnificent castle. ❤
I would love to see of them all restored. Today things have to meet modern codes and it was probably cost millions to restore. So sad its left to die alone when it once had so much life.
Absolutely beautiful! I've never seen so many antiques and artifacts in one place in my life! This castle is nothing but pure history. Thanks for taking us on a tour of this lovely piece of the past, Lesley!
That game is called Chinese checkers as far as I know. That weapons room is so interesting to look at. I've not seen any plaster work that resembles that work. Very beautiful. I think it would be amazing to see the towns people get together and set each room up with furniture from within the home to make it look like a grand home again. And with all the other pieces of furniture to be auctioned off to get the roof and windows restored. Then turn it into a museum or bed and breakfast. I'd love to work at something like that. Awesome video!!
We always called it Peg Solitaire, I've only seen it with pegs instead of marbles. Chinese Checkers is a much bigger game, it''s a board with a six pointed star
Wauw! I can't wait to see this music room. 📷📸 1600 castle 🏰 was incredible place with a dungeon and outline of a moat. All the furniture was packed on the 2nd floor was crazy.
They replaced the wood fireplace with a Coal Heater. Probably around 1910. The game is a deluxe Chinese Checkers in actual marble instead of cheap plastic and glass marbles. The owners might be deceased or there would be something updated. With no dependents the castle will end up belonging to the local Township. Hopefully they don't tear it down. Sadly the king's of the universe deem everything has to be plastic, computer, and environmental or it's trash to them. I'm worried it will be wrecked like the ancient places here. Edit The Chinese note must be the instructions for playing the checkers game. Elk head I believe. The tiny cart for children to ride in hauled by the family dog. The homemade toy car is "Meccano" which is or was from England. I had my own set as a boy and it's collectible today. You could add steam or electric motor and power your creations then.
The picture above the piano of as you said “ woman with a crown” is Queen Mary , grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, great 👑grandmother of King Charles III. The wooden board game is called Marble Solitaire or (time 16:38) Peg Solitaire. It is a single player game. This 33 hole version with marble balls was apparently attributed to nuns and priests to entertain themselves whilst living a solitary life.🙏🌟
Thank you so much for this beautiful emotional video. It is very very sad that something so beautiful is slowly breaking down. Is there no one who buys something like this and takes care of it, these are all old treasures that should be preserved, they are our past.
That game with the " marbles".is what is called Chinese checkers. That would be an antique game of Chinese Checkers. What an amazing place. And no family left to get the important things like photos, documents letters. Very sad but this guy had an interesting lifestyle.
Oh my goodness! This castle is simply majestic and splendid! Really old with real marble pillars, not faux marble like the US. The Arms room is special. I wonder were the original actual arms ended up? Some of the antiques are really good pieces. Dining room table in lovely condition. Wow! The prison cell is so cool! Got my imagination running now...I think the entrance/exit to the outside (next to prison cell) food and wine dispatch and receipt. I notice there are many rugs on the floors. Some appear to be priceless Persian Rugs! Leslie, could you also pay attention to the carpets?
Thank you for walking us and putting that tone of voice which it makes most mystically in wonder for what might have happen and still is with an unknown value.
Lesley, this is a very fascinated 17th century Abandoned Camelot Castle. Thank you very much for showing us the indoor of that wonderful Belgium castle.
The stone in the basement is "bluestone" (blauwe hardsteen), not marble. Bluestone is abundant and mined in the Belgian Ardennes and in the province Hainout. Bluestone is much cheaper than marble.
That's really interesting to me. Aside from the geological and artistic aspect of it, my husband's great grandmother's maiden name was Bluestone. I can't wait to show him this.
I love his adventure. Thanks. Why can't an action be held? The money taken in could go to fixing building to where it least it doesn't decay anymore. Then perhaps it can be sold to someone who can restore it. It is just so magnificent.
What a pity they didn’t sell all those beautiful forniture ! Such beautiful beautiful things thank you for showing this beautiful castle Lesley and Dan greetings from Australia ! ❤
This was worthy of two parts as there was so much of interest. I would hope you would return and do a more in depth exploration of the contents before all is lost. I'm going to watch it again just to view the wonderful furniture. The photos were amazing...and surely worth more time spent. Please please show us more. Thank you both for one of your best discoveries ! Hey Elon!!! How about putting your money into something REALLY worthwhile. It would sure give some respect to your endeavors.
I have seen this exploration by Explomo and one other group it is an amazing magnificent castle thank you for having your special way of documenting it❤
And you think a bunch of scruffy squatters would love it? They would reduce it to a pile of sticks & rubble within weeks and graffiti the walls. Makes me laugh when brain dead people think that abandoned castles and mansions should go to the homeless. That's somebody property paid for with their hard earned cash, not a homeless shelter to give to some lazy, druggy that has never done a day's work in their life 🙄
So amazing to see all of this! What a shame all that furniture is left behind. I would love to live here and restore the building, I'm sure it could be very beautiful.
The game you found with the marbles is an old Marble Solitaire game. It was from the 1600's and still played today. You have to remove all the marbles but one. People played this game for several reasons, I had one as a child but it had a red and colorful tin to play on. I'm only 68 yrs. young but I would love to have that game again.
.... handles coal and then photos and then leaves them in disarray. These are private photos of people who are likely still alive. I find it wrong to show them in this public domain.
Imagine back in the 1600s when that castle was surrounded by nature and dirt paths and trees everywhere. People getting around by horse and by foot. Today, you see residential homes and cemented roads right next to it and cars driving by. What a time warp!
Amazing
Hmm..beautiful majestic mature trees replaced by ugly cement bldgs..morphing into a unknown future...
All of these wonderful Gilded Aged Mansions and Castles are always so interesting for me. Old spaces of times gone by.
Makes me think of the series Outlanders
Wow thats amazing

Costa fortune to to do works on it as it would have protections on it. And back taxes probably applicable too
An amazing tour, Lesley! You have inspired me to do some research again! It appears that Christopher Atkins, the owner, bought this chateau in Wallonia (southern Belgium) in 1999 as a restoration project. Queen Elizabeth, Queen mother was mother of Queen Elizabeth ii.. Queen Mary was before king George vi.. The queen's father.
Thank you, Caroline - sorry about my typo. It should have read 'grandmother' of Queen Elizabeth II

So sad to see all those treasures and such a grand castle just wasting away. A tragedy.
It can't believe they just up and left, leaving all this grandeur behind to just mould away...

True. That's what I was thinking , sell off the antiques and reinvest the money into restoring this amazing place.
Think would be better to divide it into grand apartments. At least then it would ensure it’s use and save the building.
Without the original furniture the place is nothing,it looses its soul and character.

Thank you so much for doing what you do
It's amazing that no one has looted this house with all of the gorgeous antiques in there.
So where’s the dust and spider webs? That first reddish sofa set looks very late model.
@@danireydon762As I understand it was left in 2017.
Thanks for taking us along
Thanks so much Lesley, to show us such a Beautiful Belgium Castle!!😘
Love , from Central Illinois America🥰❤
This is absolutely fantastic. I’ve been watching you for quite a few years now and this is like the best explore that you have ever done. This place is amazing.
Thanks again for a wonderful experience. And for sharing this beautiful castle with us. Enjoy your exploration each time especially when it’s a beautiful place.
Take care
Your friend,
Bonnie 😊🥰👏👏👏
America
A wonderful presentation of this 17th century castle! Spectacular!
the game is solitaire.. fairly common. starting with all holes populated except the one in the middle, the goal is to remove all the pegs or marbles , leaving one in the middle. you move by hopping over a piece to an empty hole, removing the piece you have "hopped" over. spent many a wet week in caravan in Devon playing this game.
I have known this game as a solitaires game called HI Q.
We call the game Solitaire. The picture above the grand piano is of Queen Mary wife if George V.
Wauw! I can't wait to see this music room. 📷📸 1600 castle 🏰 was incredible place with a dungeon and outline of a moat. All the furniture was packed on the 2nd floor was crazy.
Excellent Job guys!! What an amazing find!!
Edit
The Chinese note must be the instructions for playing the checkers game.
Elk head I believe.
The tiny cart for children to ride in hauled by the family dog.
The homemade toy car is
"Meccano" which is or was from England.
This 33 hole version with marble balls was apparently attributed to nuns and priests to entertain themselves whilst living a solitary life.🙏🌟
See how a family line ends when they don’t have children. No memories to pass down.
Thank you so much for this beautiful emotional video. It is very very sad that something so beautiful is slowly breaking down. Is there no one who buys something like this and takes care of it, these are all old treasures that should be preserved, they are our past.
Another great video!!! 👌 I absolutely love your channel Leslie and Danny! Thank you for sharing your travels!
Bros Of Decay: I always enjoy your UA-cam channel
They should’ve had an auction of all that stuff to raise money to restore it.
It's a shame that all this stuff will go to waste
Beautiful castle.
Such a shame to let it fall into decay.
The Marshall and Rose piano was more than likely built in Great Britain.
Did anyone else notice the Huge Fireplace in the attic that was barely covered?
I love his adventure. Thanks. Why can't an action be held? The money taken in could go to fixing building to where it least it doesn't decay anymore. Then perhaps it can be sold to someone who can restore it. It is just so magnificent.
What a pity they didn’t sell all those beautiful forniture ! Such beautiful beautiful things thank you for showing this beautiful castle Lesley and Dan greetings from Australia ! ❤
This was a very sad place that needs to be made back to it's glorious state that it once was
This was worthy of two parts as there was so much of interest.
I love opening my youtube on Monday nights, because your videos are the first ones on the page. Thanks guys for always keeping us interested. 🥰
Great video. Thank you for sharing. Very Interesting...♡♡♡
I have seen this exploration by Explomo and one other group it is an amazing magnificent castle thank you for having your special way of documenting it❤
I wonder what the sqatter laws are in that country. A home like that should be loved and lived in.

Thanks for the castle! very mesmerizing!!!😘😘😘😘😘
Beautiful story, house and history!
This is the best tour of an old home that I have watched. This place is magnificent! Thank you so much.
A massive collection of exquisite art, incredible!
One of the most amazing places I've seen you explore. Excellent job!
So amazing to see all of this! What a shame all that furniture is left behind. I would love to live here and restore the building, I'm sure it could be very beautiful.
Cool explore as always lovely abandoned castle to bad it just sits there to fade away
A cell in the basement - thanks but no thanks! Great historic castle!
I love the respect you have for the valuables and families who owned these places
.... handles coal and then photos and then leaves them in disarray. These are private photos of people who are likely still alive. I find it wrong to show them in this public domain.
Wonderful vidéo as always 👍👍👍👍🙋🙋🙋🙋
