      I find that Danny lets Leslie go and only interjects when a slight correction is needed or when additional cogent historical data deserves pointing out. Danny's camera skills as Leslie guides is exceptional.
      Chateau de Purnon, another huuuuge French property is being restored. It is major, costly, time consuming work and to bring up to today's living standards with electricity & plumbing: floors, walls & ceilings need to be surveyed, cut into and then repaired as though not disturbed.
      They have obtained a special restoration grant by the French gov't or architectural antiquities organization to help with the repairs, as well as their own fortune.
      Owners have og floor plans and explain the purpose of rooms, maid/man servant rooms, work rooms, secret stairs etc., which I find helpful in informing me of what went on here.
      Many of the small painted vignettes over doors & fireplaces are copies of famous art by French artists of the time.
      I would have like to have explored much more of the kitchen to see where washing up was done, dumb waiter, bread ovens, cabinets etc.

    So much has been removed from this castle, I pray someone just took the valuables and stored them and they did not get stolen. I would imagine the sale of certain objects and material from this marvelous monstrosity would help to preserve it to a large degree. We must understand that the times we live in now do not support such grand opulence. That does not reduce their grander in any way but it speaks to a culture that may be lost to time. A culture which represented oppression and profit from servitude. Let us not forget.

    Having two people sharing their knowledge is more enlightening than one person constantly guessing about items and history. Shared knowledge is never a detriment in these explores. As I grow older I am less and less "thrilled" by exclusive and beautiful spaces for the privileged few. But as a student and instructor of the Humanities, I understand they were also patrons of craftspeople and artists. Eventually, some of that wealth was used to create public spaces where ordinary citizens could walk and gather in the presence of beautiful architecture and enjoy the works of great sculptors and painters.

Whether it is furniture or rugs or nick knacks or painting, frames , mirrors, even the marble facades of the fireplaces....all of this is very valuable. It says something to me and that is even the down and out prone to theft people of France must still have a sense of respect. After looking at several of these videos of these abandoned palaces, castles, manors, mansions, homes of all shapes and sizes and so on, one thing is clear. We are all just temporary residents on this planet wherever we may go while living in it. We get to live maybe 80 good years and then we are done. Eventually the next generations will become the new residents whether from the same family tree or not. These abandoned places are proof that ultimately all lives end and only the future knows how that will turn out. The stories and memories of people, events, activities that have occured is all that is left behind. We must use our time well and enjoy the only life we will ever have as we will never come this way again.

    You guys are awesome videographer/adventurers. Your educated narrative is wonderful. It is clear that you have both studied period history. In my uni-days, I got so sick of studying architecture, I had to stop. However; now in my second stage of life, I can appreciate the study of architecture with much more understanding. The fact that this is a 12th century foundation and its stone structure has survived a fire intrigues me. Many opulent stone structures of this period did not have plumbing. (the word plumbing is derived from the latin word for lead) These semi-ancient structures amaze me due to their adaptive elements that improved human hygiene during this period. At 56:51 I notice there is a pitcher and wash basin. Then we briefly see a chamber pot adjacent to that and the window. This seems to represent a more sanitized version of hygiene most related to the victorian age. Then, thanks to your observational skills we see a smaller space with a bucket to the right of the aforementioned chamber pot. A bed room with a chamber pot, a basin and pitcher does not need a bucket in a counter which does not seem to fit the other parts of the room. This smaller space has walls decorated, but apparently the lighting was of no consequence. (Notice the shop lamp over the bucket.) Was this bucket possibly the storage place for the content of the chamber pot until it was removed? I'm not sure. If so, it's good to have a door to prevent uncomfortable odor from entering the room. I can't help but to notice that there seems to be an opening directly across from the smaller room with that is the same shape of the smaller room door. Why does the bed appear to be blocking this opening? The blocked opening seems to open out from the small bedroom. Also, there seems to be a door that would open into the room on the same wall at the foot of the bed. The imagined door at the foot of the bed would conflict and prevent entry from without the small bedroom when opened. Why, I wonder, are most of the other discreet room openings without glass but this room has a half glass paned opening? Also why do so many Edison style bell buttons appear out side of each door and within this room beside the fireplace? This must have been the request to enter and the request for service bells. Simple electrical circuitry was a huge advancement from the pull cord for service style bell of the past. Without proper hydraulic plumbing, the watch towers of defensive structures in this age required a swift and efficient manor to safely remove waste. While descending from their towers lords and ladies, must appear clean and fresh for their subjects. However; sentries and royals did not wish to bother descending and then ascending many flights of stairs to relieve themselves. Malodorous soiled rulers could include embarrassment and disgust from their attendants. Therefore royals and their guards must then be required to drop their waste like a bird from a convenient cantilevered hole on the top of the tower. This royal behavior would not only deter attackers but remind those who must serve them bellow that they are subjects. Towers of this era then must include simple waste disposal that did not embarrass but enforce rule by discreetly dropping waste from atop the tower to the grounds below. This practice was employed by royalty until they employed proper plumbing. Thank god for the Roman Empire. However; Roman plumbing, as effective as it was, was mostly supplied with lead pipes. This fact turned out bad for the Roman elite who were blessed with apparent cleanliness. Now, this brings me to my point, have the s**t chutes been removed from this structure? Or have they been simply disguised?

      In other words this room seems like a not so fresh salad with fresh dressing.

    • @princeedwardinacan

      At 1:17:19 we can see severe staining on the outside walls bellow the openings. Most often the weather is deflected from window openings. This would result in less staining below the opening. Because of the advent of indoor pluming, Many modern people would try to disguise any evidence of dropped from above waste removal. Obvious gauche reminders of the past were uncomfortable. Therefor the upper stories would be removed of such primitiveness.

    • @princeedwardinacan
      @princeedwardinacan 16 днів тому +1

      For example these "window" openings seem to be void of a window sill. The lack of a window sill would contribute to collection of runoff and waste would stain the exterior. This would explain why the curtains or shutters viewed from the inside seem to be a meter away from the outside surface of the wall. This would explain the broad and decorative spaces on the "front" of the Chateau and the rough and discreet spaces behind it. The orientation of he chateau would obviously face windward of the prevailing breeze. The leeward side would be servant quarters and grounds keepers etc. This would then reinforce the feudal class distinction required to rule subjected people during the time.

      It is still owned by the original family who might have preferred a more modern accommodation and lifestyle. However, when you think about it, it is a smart marketing to let Urban Explorers in to let the audience discover this amazing place. It's been for sale since 2017 for an astronomic amount of money. It also needs major electrical and plumbing work and the top two floors have suffered the most from decades of neglect. Have you seen any working bathrooms besides the nicely designed bedrooms?
