  • This week we're looking at two INCREDIBLE SINGERS from two different generations. First, we listen to @Aretha 1968 classic I Say a Little Prayer. Then, we compare that with the modern vocals of the INCREDIBLE @adele and her most recent single Easy on Me.
    I'm @Jack Conte the CEO of @Patreon and one-half of the bands @Scary Pockets and @PomplamooseMusic .
    Joining me today are 3 of my best musician friends;
    The ICONIC Paulette McWilliams who was the backing vocalist for Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and many more.
    The AMAZING Maiya Sykes who has performed with @postmodernjukebox , @ScaryPockets and was a contestant on @TheVoiceGlobal
    @ryanlerman a professional guitarist the other half of @ScaryPockets
    Joining us behind the desk is Tim Sonnefeld GRAMMY winning producer, engineer and multi-Instrumentalist
    Here are our recommendations for our favorite vocalists who are crushing it right now;
    Maiya Sykes - @JazmineSullivan / @jazminesullivan
    @AbbeySmithy / @abbeysmithy
    Paulette McWilliams

      There are a lot of poor singers in the spotlight and not just because of Auto-Tune. Many genres have suffered because instrumentation has been stressed over vocals. Modern rappers can't even talk while modern metal singers are sounding like the Cookie Monster.

    Fascinated by what Maiya Sykes had to say about women of color not being allowed to exist in a more vulnerable space. It makes me think of what the Brit singer Yola has spoken about as far as getting trapped in the stereotype/trope of the "strong black woman."

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 2 роки тому +5

      Nina Simone did it, but she did it in Europe. Billie Holiday also pulled it off. In the age of the labels doing less for the artist and independent artists having more influence because of the internet, I believe it's more about being a talented vocalist, writer, instrumentalist and marketer. With those skills, an artist can perform what they want and get noticed.

      Very interesting. Maybe it's specially true in the USA. Because Jorja Smith has been totally the sweetest, vulnerable brit teen shining stars. Right on Tiny Desk for Example. Or Corinne Bailey Ray. But maybe brits are "allowed" in that space more, in Europe, then USA. Vulnerable black woman would be presenting an artist very honnestly, which the USA barely do for anyone anymore. WHat a great insight from Maiya, appart from a fantastic episode.

    It also must be noted that "I Say A Little Prayer" was actually sung by Dionne Warwick and already peaked the charts A YEAR (1967) before Aretha released a version of her own (1968). Moreover, this song was written by the legendary duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David who were notoriously very strict and specific on their vision of a song (this song was made exactly for Dionne's voice character and capability). However, Aretha was able to REINVENT "I Say A Little Prayer" in a whole new way that's so distinguishable from the original to the point both versions worth praises of each own merit. Aretha Franklin is a master of music.

    This is so good. So often, people have no idea how much practice and attention to detail goes into vocal. Especially this kind of lead and back up. And the reality is, as much as instrumentalist love instrumental music, audiences respond to the human voice. Great singer(s) can take a band to another level. I am jealous of Jack and Ryan. I love, love, love listening to and learning from you all. Maiya, you are so eloquent into the musicianship of singing and Paulette, you are a master of singing, you have learned from the greatest and these videos document your powerful presence in popular music. I would love to hear your commentary on popular singers, who I call Producer's Children. There are a boatload of good voices out there, but instead of learning musicianship, they are just following what their producers want to hear. That would be an interesting convo.

    Aretha & Chaka Khan had that in common also. Chaka, who started as a background singer herself, had some phenomenal background singers throughout her career. Just listen to & watch her live performance of Everlasting Love from the 90’s music show Hard Rock Live. It’s here on UA-cam. Modern day vocalists like Alicia K, Adele, Jasmine S, Fantasia, JHud & Bey have amazing background singers that can hang w/ them vocally as well.
    That’s how singers from my Gen-X, I’m 52, & those b4 mine paid their dues & honed their skills for the stage & the studio. That’s why they’ve had longevity in a career that’s as fickle as the music biz.
    Oh & don’t u dare sleep on Whitney or Luther’s background singers either. Those sAngers were & STILL are beasts. All I’m gonna say is LISA FISCHER! 🤷🏽‍♀️👏🏽👏🏽

    Paulette, I have known Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel before but when you sang it there was a different light and a different taste to it. I felt it, I tasted it, and I enjoyed it in a different way. Your truth MOVED me and now, I dedicate that specific rendition to my wife. When you sang the line, "I said, 'I love you'. And that's forever." -- it moved me to tears. It's so thoughtful and it's so warm. Thank you so much.

    As a young child, "I say a little prayer" was the song that opened up soul music to me I loved that song so much. Even today when I hear it, I get so emotional.

    This gave me full body chills! I worship Aretha and 'I Say a Little Prayer' is one of my favorite Aretha songs. We'll never see such a talent that even comes close. She is everything! 🥰
