- Bethesda’s reputation is on the line, and they know it. After more than a decade of banking on Skyrim’s success and re-releasing the same game countless times, fans are finally expecting something different-something groundbreaking-with Elder Scrolls 6. But does Bethesda really have what it takes to deliver in a modern gaming world? We’ll dive into Bethesda’s history of luring us in with promises they rarely fully deliver on, explore why players keep coming back despite the frustrations, and discuss how Elder Scrolls 6 might finally break this cycle-or seal Bethesda’s fate. If they can't rise to the occasion, Elder Scrolls 6 might be the last straw for fans who’ve been let down one too many times.

With Bethesdas current trajectory ES6 is cooked. After Starfield im no longer excited for it.
I dont blame you.
Same.
I love video games. My favorite genre of games are RPGS. Favorite genre of RPGS are open world RPGS. My favorit developer (at the time) was Bethesda. I'm a huge science nerd. Favorite scientific area is space. I sat and watched live-streams of the JWST deploying in space worrying that it'd hit any single point failures.
Basically what I'm saying is Starfield might as well have been developed for me alone. I bought a new gaming PC for it (I needed that anyway but still). It shouldn't have been even possible for that game to disappoint me, and they fucked it up.
@@Jonayofsweden pretty much
Emil's creative skills are as good as his haircut, lol.
If Todd and Emil stays within or doesn't show signs of actually listening ? Yeah, we 100% cannot trust them...
Bethesda is FAR behind the industry, not only on writing but also on a technical level, endless loadings screens and stiff emotionless characters. They've become spoiled and think they can't make a bad game, this toxic positivity enviroment disgusts me, they gaslight people and insult our intelligence. I won't be buying TES:6 if it launches and the reviews are bad.
Bethesda: Skyrim took too long to navigate - we’ll make ES6 one quarter the size. Skyrim’s magic was too complicated for casual kiddie players - We’ll provide just 6 spells which will fire at foes automatically. Skyrim was too racist and insufficiently represented real world minorities - We’ll force the player character to be an ethnic woman. Skyrim didn’t cost enough - We’ll add loot boxes, pay2win, expensive dlc and all only player paid for ‘creations’ work. Skyrim’s music was unnecessary - We’ll make it mostly silent or add a bit of guitar here and there! Skyrim’s Story line was way too complicated - We’ll have only one faction and about twenty hours play time which you can do over and over. ES 6 will be a fantastic success, because we will keep telling people it is….
If ES6 is a financial failure BGS won't exist any longer.
Nah :y your first point would actually be better than Bethesdas current mindset. "Ah fallout 4 is even bigger than Skyrims map" "ah, Fallout 76 is 4 times Fallout 4" "oh, Starfield has 1000 planets!" and look where "bigger is better" got us. But let's be real, they simply have lost it.
@@animeesq4241 at least in fallout 76, the map still uses good world content, despite many drawbacks, Starfield? oh
Havent seen anyone mentioning it, but also no Jeremy Soule in ES6
Every game since Morrowind has been less of a story-rich RPG and more of a power-fantasy action game. The problem is the action elements are just mediocre at best.
Honestly they’re best compared to a restaurant from Kitchen Nightmares it’s not 1984 Emil/todd. I have gone back and played morrowind and Daggerfall and seeing the different features get taken out of future games worries me because Skyrim is extremely toned down and I honestly feel they will just re do Skyrim in hammerfell. I just wish they’d bring back more features and add new ones. My friend and I don’t have high hopes due to starfield.
Thankfully I have a copy of morrowind and oblivion to keep me company if TES 6 isn’t good.
Both -- expectations were sky high, a lot of demands still are and some fans have demands that conflict with some others. However, if Bethesda keeps their current trajectory no one will be pleased, or next to no one.
Almost every liked Skyrim so claiming expectations are too high is self evidently untrue.
ES6 will be irrelevant if its not considerably better than skyrim. All of the beyond skyrim mods have made great strides in the past few years and by the time es6 comes out Cyrodiil will be out, why play a new game if you can go to every province in skyrim?
Most of BS is vaporware. Cyrodiil and maybe Akamora and Roscrea are the only ones that have any shot of coming out. The rest are never going to see the light of day, at least not in any remotely close to finished state. This is the reality for Skywind as well.
Is it wrong that I have more hope, expectations, and excitement for Skyblivion than I do for Elder Scrolls 6.
Nope, nothing wrong with that if you ask me! I'm excited for both Skyblivion and Skywind :)
nope
Modders have released more games using Creation Engine than Bethesda has, all in the timeframe of a decade.
FO76 and Starfield were disappointments. No faith in BGS either creatively or technically.
Congratulations sir, you have the correct opinion
I’m really annoyed that you described Starfield as sub-standard and “poor”. That’s really unacceptable. To describe Starfield as “poor” is a massive upgrade from the dismal reality.
Compare starfield to red dead 2 graphics wise and it was also the quests were not good or immersive plus the map was trash and way to spread out so sounds like an accurate description
Had me in the first half, not gonna lie 😂
@@Bp07009 I agree completely. Actually RDR2 is the game I often use to compare new AAA games against.
I’ve never actually completed RDR2 myself, only maybe 40%, but the storytelling, world design and characterisations are superb - leading to real immersion.
Starfield does not deserve to be in the same sentence as RDR2. It just doesn’t work on any level, for me.
Well the game was ass and that's that I completed it myself and thought, is this written for 9 year old children cause the writing was wack and even flying your ship your just in one spot all along not even flying it was a big money grab
@@mcjamesmongan8829totally agree! And what about that bit where you get text pop ups saying “you have used the wrench to undo the nut” or some utter jank. Absolutely shocking in a so called AAA game.
They went and took a massive wrong turn in KISS writing and they also took a massive wrong turn with the idea that gamers will take their games and mod it themselves into what they want. Two design choices done by two at the top of the design choice pyramid. Both game designs are built on laziness and that is so not gonna cut it as games move on. But there is also a magical thing that makes a game just feel amazing to play. A hard to explain "thing" that just keeps player enthralled.
What I mean is I have been making my own mod for New Vegas. Adding in more harsh drug withdrawal and making a sanity system etc. What I found is my brain was asking for simplicity constantly. So I saved all the work I had done so far and set out to simplify the mod. What I then found is I started getting bored with game when it was simpler to understand. Luckily and with great wisdom I saved the previous version and reinstalled and it was right back to that feeling of immersion. Its like the human brain wants to be confused but its a thin line where you want complexity in design but only to the point where brain starts giving feelings of wanting it to be easier. It reminds me exactly of wanting to date someone so bad and once you do your interest wanes. So what do guys do......they go for Latinas nowadays and the reason is you want want want and then you get and Latinas remain critical and complain and keep you always on edge....that fine line of cross over and divorce or ride the lightning and keep your man vested in you from your crazy personality. Now the big booty part of the Latina equation is the prize and in gaming terms you have to go back to design choices of which Bethesda took wrong turns in both as above.
what brings me back to skyrim is everything, except the conflicts and glitches, but sometimes it's the unpredictable outcomes due to the glitches or bugs lol, but i do really like the world space of skyrim, modding also helps significantly.
according to steam, i have over 10,000 hours in skyrim, it's a mix of SLE and SSE, i haven't even touched AE yet.
I believe hodd toward knew what he was doing at some point
but emil hackarulo is like a ghoul -- he rots everything around him
Bugthesda is dead to me. Starfailed was the last nail in their coffin. I have no interest in Elder Scrolls 6 or any other planned new releases. I am mildly interested in any official Morrowind or Oblivion remakes though. Outside of that, Little Todd and Crew no longer exist.
It is a shame fans feel this way...
7:22 They're not showing anything because there is nothing to show. As I understand it when the trailer released the game didn't even exist except in conceptual stages. So it's not like ES6 has been cooking for 12 years since Skyrim. I don't think we will see anything anytime soon, and when we do see it I don't know exactly what it will be, what I do know though is that it will be far behind its competition in essentially every aspect.
I think they forget that the people who are going to get the next generation playing their games are the older gamers introducing them to their kids. if their games are terrible, they are not going to.
If anyone can make a TES6, than Bethesda. But!!! Tod's vision for Starfield was not to just make a fun space-action-rgp, this time he wanted to create a space-simulator with a story and a ship building system. But Bethesda did not sell that enough, so the players still expect, to get what Bethesda is known for, a fun openworld-action-rpg. But Bethesda does not try to do the same thing, they try to create something new. For Starfield and also for TES6. So the player should expect from TES6 to get a Phantasie-Simulator with a story and maybe a playerhome building system. With those expectations the player will probably be more happy with what TES6 is going to be like.
it wont matter what they release, good or bad, the image has been painted and some people will always want to just look the other way
I have six big things that I want from ES6, if I do not get them i will likely not be playing.
1. Independent weapons skills, basically swords and maces shouldn't both scale with the same skill they are very different and should be different.
2. Attributes, give us the attribute system back it made TSE what it is and should never have been removed.
3. Spears, I know they can do it and they have done it before.
4. Spell crafting, where is it it was in all the other far less advanced games that came before.
5. Utility spells, I honestly cannot think of a utility spell other than telekinesis in skyrim.
6. Mysticism, the place where most of the utility spells were in morrowind.
If ES6 doesn’t have these three things, I’ll probably skip it:
1. Michael Kirkbride as at least a consultant, or ideally in his old Morrowind role.
2. Someone to filter his ideas-keeping the best while adding structure-who’s also skilled in world-building and game design.
3. A strong writer who can deliver a compelling story.
I dont need fancy new mechanics or more polygons in my open world rpg. I need an open world and the ability to role play.
hang on there, i wouldn't say our immersion switched, i would say it expanded passed that, so we still want these other things, but we also want our choices to really matter and we want more player choice and other expanding of the world that we live within.
Imagine they pulled off the perfect game no bugs etc, but they forgot to add sweet rolls in it! 😮
I do not a Baldur's Gate, not my thing. I played through CP 2077 a couple times. City of a million locked doors and the loneliest city for having so many people.
If TES6 turns out to be like Skyrim with a different location & story, I'll be happy. Because who ever wrote Starfield has to be a priest or something. I mean if it even looks like you did something wrong your , holier than thou, follower will storm off angry. In Skyrim you can find a woman that has shackles on the headboard of her bed and other suggestive items. The books, "Lusty Argonian", suggestive dialogue, etc.... The followers were ride or die and in a fight the profanity wasn't spared.
Having played Skyrim and all the dlc sized mods on Nexus, I have 5000+ hours in the game. Starfield will not stay in my PC storage for that long. It is basically a ship builder with a terrible Rated PG story wrapped around it. I will not preorder TES6 and will wait for reviews.
*Bethesda should focus on Elder Scrolls 6 and 7 and forget everything else 👌 Fallout should exclusively be a Netflix or Amazon experience at this point.*
JJ guides i have watched like all of ur vids now I have high expectations get to 100 mil subs by tomorrow or else.
You and I wish...lol
I don't care about 6 its another 4 years away what I want is the mod cap on Xbox increased by at least 1 gb if Bethesda can't be stuffed lazy improving skyrims obsolete textures and meshes. Many of the mods available for 6 may not be free in 4 years you watch . Bethesda is a lazy company reliant on its modding community to improve and finish its games and if they hadn't made the empty waste of space game we could be playing/ modding 6 by now the game most Bethesda fans wanted
I paid for Skyrim so much so that they would make the next one, over a decade later it feels like they haven’t even started making the game besides a loose idea
Bethesda has striked Out so Often, lately. I think they should sell fallout and elder scrolls. They can keep Star, mud field tho
First thing, if expectations are too high it is entirely their own fault. They could have released es6 in 2016 or 2017 with reasonable improvements on Skyrim similar to the progression from Oblivion to Skyrim and people would have been thrilled. But now the gaming industry has left them behind as evidenced by Starfield.
Second, I think es6 will be the second to last game Bethesda makes at least in their current form. It will be massively disappointing but people will still buy it because they've been waiting more than a decade. But they will have learned their lesson in Fallout 5 will be a massive flop.
Time will tell but right now I’m more interested in wayward realms, Kingdom come deliverance two, and the next 3d zelda
the setback i can clearly see is gonna be the trailer, just like Cyberpunk, it had a cool, realistic, atmospheric trailer and... it was buggy and not good at all...
But this time, i doubt it'll be as beloved as fixed-cyberpunk, and will probably lead to a MASSIVE spike in popularity, people realise it's horrendous, then another massive... drop as most people give up on Bethesda.
Do you guys think we’ll get more than three types of flavored paddle? Do you think our main character will have… agency? That’d be a new one for Bethesda.
6:15 “A lot of you guys are 25+” Are you frikkin kidding!…back when Beth run its own forum site the average age of members was about 48. Some of us are now 60+. Skyrim appeals to mature cerebral gamers, in particular with its resource management and strategic builds, plus combat is at a realistic human cadence not requiring the twitch reflexes of a kid doped up on Redbull. The fact is CAN be enjoyed by kids as well is a bonus, although they often tend to play a less demanding set up and then get bored whereas older players often prefer a more challenging game that makes surviving it more satisfying and victories less shallow. It caters for all ages if given the chance!
Why are you making it a me vs them generational fight lmao
Skyrim is pretty simple game all around. I bet most kids these days can comprehend way more complicated game systems better than you.
@i_like_lemons Of course they can, but do they have the patience or tolerance and attention span for such complexities ? Answer is No.
@@Vert_GreenHeart Yes, they absolutely can. Most of my friends started playing Skyrim when they were younger than Morrowind itself, and I even know kids born in the 2010s who are already playing Skyrim and loving it. Some of them are moving on to Oblivion and Morrowind, supporting the community better than Bethesda ever has. It’s not fair to write off the younger generation as less capable-Athens and Sparta made the same mistake, and we know how that turned out.
Plus, let’s be real: Skyrim is an incredibly simplified game. It barely qualifies as an RPG and doesn’t deserve that label. Kids today are more than capable of handling complex games like Paradox grand strategies, roguelikes like CDDA, and simulators like Dwarf Fortress. Even if the communities for these games aren’t entirely made up of young people (unlike the mostly younger fanbase of Skyrim, lol), it proves that younger players can and do engage with far more demanding experiences.
And don’t forget: old folks can’t even play shooters properly, thinking kids are always hopped up on Red Bull, and they’ll be dead while we’re still out here enjoying life. (Since we’re doing a generational war, lol)
LOL yes, 25 year olds are old.... Don't mind me, I'll be crying over here at the fact that I was in my mid 30's when Skyrim came out (the first time).
I can’t fathom how restarted it must feel at that age to wait over a decade for a company to release the damn game. Bethesda's convinced it's fine to release half finished products once every decade lmao what a joke
Bethesda is already running damage control. They should just give ES6 to Larian before they kill our beautiful experience.
It's not that Bethesda can't reach our 'expectations', it's that they don't want to.
Give it to someone who does.
6:13 damn im probably the youngest skyrim fan😭
I think what happened to Starfield & Fallout 76 speaks for itself no one should trust Bethesda anymore.
They're still milking ESO and just released Elder Scrolls: Shelter. So, good or bad, don't expect to see ES6 before 2030. Civilization itself could very well collapse by then.
personally i feel that bethesda so long as they keep using the creation engine, they should drop down and become a AA game developer, because they don't fit in the AAA standards anymore with the limitations of the engine as well as the writers they have for these games.
BGS has no writers, they let their own quest/int devs do their own writing and then compile everything at the end and call it a day. I'm over simplifying it, but that's the gist of it. There's no central design document, there's no communication between different teams and their head writer + Todd Howard have that stupid _stupid_ philosophy "Keep it simple, Stuupid." Which was something meant for coding, NOT actual quest writing. That is such a stupid philosophy to have for writing story and dialogue.
Not that anyone will read this far but I'm glad Starfield is sounding the alarm bells. You don't want a watered down version of Skyrim, you want something great for TES 6. Because Oblivion was a watered down version of Morrowind which was a watered down version of Daggerfall. Skyrim gives the illusion of choice but with 2 exceptions, nothing you did really mattered at all in the game. Why should TES VI be any different? They could put out another rerelease of Skyrim tomorrow and all the dolphins and whales will buy it up so they have no incentive to improve their game design at all.
ES6 is gonna be almost exactly like Dragon Age Veilguard...just with worse writing because Emil Pagliarulo still works there.
Starfield was the final nail in Bethesda's coffin. ES6 will just be Todd Howard pissing on its grave.
For me it's been Morrowwind,Fallout 3, Skyrim,Fallout 4, Did like the last one and haven't bought a Bethesda game since, and I'm glad I saved my money, I've seen the videos of games they've made over the last few years and lets face it they suck!
It is blatantly obvious that Bethesda is lacking in creativity. That is the sole reason why Im worried about ES6..
Skyrim was great, *at the time* if it released today? It would be a lot more mediocre. Expectations and technology has gotten better, and they need to deliver, especially after BG3
"Are we setting impossible standers for them to reach" We are asking Bethesda to make a game that actually works, so yes we are setting an imposable standard 🤣
Bethesda dug their own bug riddled lazy grave. I love Skyrim but it owes more to the community polishing it like a jewel for 10 years, the base game SCREAMS lazy. Do not make excuses for their slop and gaslighting. They are already pushing excuses and casting blame on fans through their paid mouthpieces, DOA trajectory.
No
Less than 1% of people who watch the videos subscribe. I wonder why. Maybe it's due to the fact that these takes show that a person is wanting a TES game to not be like a TES game.
The series has never been about great writing, it's been about exploration and moment to moment gameplay. This is not the type of game that lends itself to a great narrative. If anyone disagrees, list some previous examples from the series.
If the reply is that they need to evolve with the times, then maybe the person should simply find a game that has what they are looking for instead of trying to turn other games to that.
Just let Obsidian do it lol they'll make a better game and it'll be done before the end of 2025 😂
If given 10 years, obsidian could've made a dream TES game...
Pre-Outer Worlds Oblivion when Chris Avellone was their goose who laid the golden eggs, sure. Heck, they could have made a dream TES game within 2 years. After all the backbiting JSawyer did trying to destroy Avellone's life though? Nah.
Umm no, Baldurs gate and Cyberpunk don't have "great stories" bro, stop repeating that absurdity that every other cookie cutter youtube channel repeats from their script, their story is simplistic and lame, what sold those games wasn't their story, what sold Cyberpunk was primarily the graphics, what sold Baldur's gate was a combination of graphics and gameplay.
Graphics and the open world nature of games has increased over time, yes, but the quality of the story has not improved over time, in fact modern games far more rely on graphics and gameplay as their selling point, which is an easy selling point and translates well in trailers and hype etc to sell the game. As far as a story, there has never been a limitation on making a good story (It's all up to the writer), Unreal Engine 5 doesn't make a story good, lol.
Good stories are written by good writers, the peak of stories in games are typically in Japanese visual novel games actually, which rely almost entirely on their story as the selling point (it's practically like an interactive manga in a sense). Beyond that, and venturing more into regular gaming, the best stories have been seen over time in things like early Final Fantasy games up to 10, the original 2 first Fallout games, Zone of the Enders, Zelda games, Persona, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears etc.
As far as the Elder Scrolls, they never had much of a story, the selling point was exploration of an open world, filled with lots of small quests etc.
There are so many youtube channels that pop up, you can tell they didn't actually play the game, they all just repeat what they saw other videos say, verbatim. A lot of these channels are so copy and paste that a bot could probably do a better job.
They can't make good games anymore
