Do you name the hedgehogs that visit your garden? I know they are wild animals, and I don't name the birds that visit my feeder - but with some much footage and the occasional visual sighting of these lovely creatures, I can't help but name them and watch their personalities. So, do you name yours? If so, what are the names of your residents and visitors?
We do name ours. This year we have had Fluffy, Tippy, BD, Stripey, Diddy, Snuffles, Biggy, and Diddier. I’m sure they have multiple names from all the other people they visit 😂
@@r0botbella Wow, Anna, that's quite a collection of hedgehogs that you have - that's awesome! I agree - I am sure everyone they visit, names them too - but Fluffy and Tippy and the others will no doubt be your source of much joy as they visit your garden. I hope they stick around for hibernation and you see them in the spring too
Thank you, Michelle. It's possible Stan will return.... I don't know. But Ollie looks completely moved in and settled, and yes, he will be well looked after
A fascinating video with excellent footage .If Stan should ever weary of his new choice he knows where you are ...Have a good weekend and trust Ollie is happy now with the new furnishings ...👍
Ollie appears very comfortable now, having filling the house. He hasn't added to that in the last few days, and whilst still active, he is spending more of the night actually sleeping, getting up for shorter and shorter periods, and generally just eating and drinking water. It's still not very cold here, and there are still bugs and insects about, so perhaps a week or two more before he nods off...
oh no, Stan! But as you write, I am sure he found some other home to spend the winter (was probably too tight in there for the two "big guys"). Ollie, what a cutie as he sets up the house. What a feeling when they actually move in. I totally name my hedgehogs. As you know by now, Ignatz is the one I took care of and now he is outside. The other hedgehog that has moved into the brick house I built has been named Bobby. :) I also have many birds and have also named some of them... great video, Mike!!
Hi Michelle, thank you for the comment. I don't think I could possibly not have the hedgehogs in the garden without giving them names. They have such character and personality. I hope Ignatz is doing well in his outside home
There are areas around us that would provide Stan with a good home, so I am hoping he found a place of his own 'in the wild'. It seems that they will simply choose to do exactly what they want to do sometimes....
Hi - we seem to be the opposite! We have had three hedgehogs all spring & summer, using the feeding station and intermittently sleeping in the hog house. By early October two stopped coming and then mid October the last one who had been sleeping in the hog house stopped visiting. We were surprised that it was so early as we expected them to come to continue for feeding purposes. We assume that this was due to preparation for hibernation, but this seemed early as we are in the South East coastal where it stays milder for longer. What a pity that they won't use our three hog houses for hibernation!
It may not yet be too late for a passing hedgehog to find your accommodation and make a very late decision to hibernate - be sure to have some dry nesting material available. As much as we rely on the research and studies to guide our understanding of these lovely creatures, they remain individuals with their own personalities and making their own decisions - often very curious to us! But that’s what makes it so special when they do decide to stay and use the houses we offer. I do hope you may yet get a resident.
