Beautiful hogs and hoglets ❤

Having recently set up. a feeding station following the guidance here, and then installed a Hedgehog House ( sourced from a lady in Portland Dorset ) I wanted some way of monitoring. I've had trail cameras over the years and they're a bit of a faff with batteries and SD cards. My solution was to purchase and repurpose some security cameras. The ones I chose were " Eufy " They are wireless and 2K resolution, plus relatively inexpensive. They don't need to connect to the internet, just your local WiFi. The results have been outstanding. I have outdoor cameras monitoring the comings and goings to each nest box, and an internal camera monitoring the feeding station, plus one in one of the nest boxes itself ( these are 5 volt USB powered ) The internal one is obscured by straw that the Hog has dragged in to build its nest and I'm loth to disturb it ) I have also fitted a small battery powered temperature and humidity sensor which logs hourly changes. It works over Bluetooth and was less that £20. I'm currently pondering 2k Wireless doorbell to go into the nest box as it is compact and has a wider angle lens that could be mounted internally on the roof. I'm getting reams of excellent quality footage.

Wow thats a nice dinner….My garden friends have slowly gone from nine each night to none over the last few nights. Still leaving food out because I expect at some point they may come back looking for it.

I have 5 disabled hedgehogs in my secure back garden, and a feeding station for the wild hedgehogs in my front garden. I also own a cat and I have cameras in both (wooden) feeding stations. Cats do not pose a threat to hedgehogs, apart from stealing their food. My own cat was very quickly put in his place by our very first blind hedgehog, who turned and charged at him, when he was threatening to pounce! He now ignores them, and they him. Cats never enter our secure garden feeding station, and only ever enter our front garden feeding station, when they know they won’t meet a hedgehog inside. The cats will enter after 5.30/6am once the last of the hedgehogs have gone to bed. Last year, the last hedgehog went into hibernation 31st October, 1st November the neighbourhood cats decided it was party time! Why don’t they enter our disabled hedgehogs’ station? Because all our hedgehogs are blind and aren’t too bothered about only coming out at night. There is a much higher chance of meeting a hedgehog in the back garden. From this point of view I prefer a wooden feeding station as the cats cannot see when there is no hedgehog inside, our stations both have two exits. With our front garden, I just take the hedgehog food inside early in the morning and put it back out at dusk. Leaving food out for hedgehogs in the Winter is more of a problem, when it’s beneficial to have food out for any hedgehog briefly waking from hibernation and looking for food. But only putting it out at night minimises the amount which will be stolen by cats. A tip for preventing rats and mice being attracted to a feeding station, is to put it in a more open area. Hedgehogs are less cautious about being out in a wide open space than rodents.

Can I also ask you what you feed the hedgehogs, I bought Hedgehog food and they don't like it. Is there a dried food you recommend.

We have had hedgehogs in the garden for the last 4 years. A male and a female, we have never seen any young sadly .My husband built two houses which from time to time they spend the night in and we have made hedgehog highways in our fences. Sometimes a second male turns up . We do film them our grandchildren love seeing them. A lovely film gives me hope that one day we will have hoglets. Thank you for sharing.

Any tips on how to keep cats out? Badgers or foxes are not around where I live. Two of my neighbours have cats though...

Thank you for this! I’ve had to stop feeding the hedgehogs due to a very sneaky cat! He’s a beautiful cat but an absolute unit and just so fat! I thought it was hedgehogs eating it until I decided to hang out later and watch!

I used a bigger plastic box with a click top lid - a 10cm squared entrance aling with a partitioning wall made out of cardboard abd covered in sticky backed plastic- fix the partitioning wall in place using duck tape 🦔❤️

How do you keep rats and mice out of the feeding station. Do you have any ideas for that?

For about £40 you could get a 2.4m x 1.2m sheet of 18mm hardwood ply. Marine ply would be better. Places like B&Q will often cut it up for you for free - especially if you were to tell the manager you're doing a conservation project. Of course you'd need to have a cutting plan, but I suspect you could make at least two and possibly three houses from one sheet + some glue and some screws.

But what I don't understand is how do I get it to ONLY record if something comes past the camera. Not the whole evening??

I just discovered that I have two chubby little hedgehogs living in my garden. It's pretty wild, more of an overgrown orchard really. I leave food and water out for around 10 stray cats, and I popped out late, around midnight and two hedgehogs were feasting on the dry food. They must be regular diners because the cats were not phased at all. I want to provide them with a house, but noticed they are hiding under a bottom shelf in a storage room I leave open for the cats. I live in Greece so it is hot, not sure when they will hibernate. I have a compost bin, beside a thick hedge of Bougainvillea, so Im thinking of placing it there. Or, should I place it where they are hanging out? in the storage room?

Hedgehogs come every night to feed out of the cat dish, the cats just look on, we probably have four even in winter that feed.

Hi Mike what a beautiful garden you've made for your wonderful hedgehogs 🦔 great channel and great advice 👏 please may i ask what shrubs you've planted around the hedgehog area as we have made a similar area at the bottom of our garden but our plants are mostly woodland ie.acers,ferns including a dead trunk of a tree fern also hostas. Only afew evenings ago we had a hedgehog visit our garden who seemed to be quite familiar with the surroundings such as finding where the water features were as we have 3 and the entrance/exit and in no hurry to leave we think the hedgehog entered from the hedge behind our garden we live in a very small village in North Devon near Umberleigh and we live directly behind a field which the hedge is at the bottom of our garden we were blown away we were watching the hedgehog from our raised deck it was absolutely wonderful just to watch his/her movement through every inch of our garden so we quickly ordered a hedgehog house, anouther on the way & basically everything kitten food & Spikes hedgehog food,hay, logs and small feeding bowels which came the following day we've also bought a wildlife camera so as we approach autumn everything will be ready if this hedgehog returns or hopefully any we can only hope, my husband actually come across what looks like a hedgehog highway hole about the size of a cd case which the previous owner had done its in the dividing fence of 1 side of our neighbour which must mean hedgehogs were coming in the garden long before we moved here plus another entrance small gap at the other end of the fencing.We all need to help build a hedgehog highway so we can somehow help these beautiful animals survive. Hi Mike 👋 may i ask what shrubs you use around your hedgehog area as ive recently had a hedgehog visit our garden in the evening and since made a safe area for the hedgehog at the bottom of our garden with a house & a feeding station with plenty of water but we only have mainly woodland plants such as ferns, acers and hostas and a trunk of a dead tree fern but would like to put a scrub or 2 with the plants we have. Loving your channel great advice for anyone who wants to help our beautiful visitors & hopefully with us humans making a hedgehog highway we can keep them from extinction which is devastating to think of please keep your channel going as we just love watching your friendly well loved hogs take care.

Have just set up a night cam in my garden a few weeks ago and discovered I had Hedgehogs visiting. By finding out more about them from You Tubers like yourself, we have now set up a feeding station and plan to get these guys nice and fat for the winter. We were horrified to discover they were endangered now, and making a difference is now our mission. The Hedgehogs themselves are very much enjoying their nightly dining visits. They reward us with hilarious footage of their exploits as payment for the food! They are absolutely fascinating creatures, and impossibly cute. I would recommend everyone does this. It's a win win for Hedgehog and the other endangered species - the Human.

Thanks for this informative video, I have a few hedgehogs that visit me and I watch them ( and put them on my UA-cam channel ) on an IR camera but I didn't know it was possible to tell one from another, now you've pointed out how I'll scrutinize them more closely and hopefully get more idea of how many I've got - I've also just subscribed to your channel 👍

Liked the video, we brought a hedgehog house as we know we have had a hedgehog in the garden for weeks, collecting leaves etc but not interested in going into the house, its just living amongst the ferms & flowers,grunting a lot, we leave food out in the feeding station which it eats every night plus water too, not sure if it's a female or male, should we leave the house nearer where we think she/he is or put it near the feeding station for it to check it out? We usually see the hedgehog coming into out garden every night then disappearing again up the wooden ramp but it's definitely staying in our garden, might it be female & pregnant if so can she have babies out in our garden? Love you passion Mike, my hubby got a larger plastic box than the one you used , cut out an entrance & taped up around the rough Edges with gaffer tape, then he put a flat thick piece of wood to weigh the Box down then a sheet of newspaper on the top of the wood for the food to go on top of it the metal dish, pluse we put a heavy terracotta pot on top of his food station to stop lid coming off, we have 5 metal shallow dishes for either food or the water, water we leave outside the box, our hedgehog loves his food station which we have used for 5 years now, I hose it out regularly too, but will use your idea from previous video re copper tape as we find slugs get in when food dish is nearly empty, regards Ann & Norman

Great video. I put out surplus dry cat food for the hedgehogs every summer + water several places in my garden. Once you start to do this it is very important you keep on doing it until late october and even november if the weather is frost free. I let a part of my garden grow wild. For my Cats, hedgehogs and insects. In the bright Danish summer nights i have seen hedgehogs coming to my garden from all over the village. One time i counted more than ten hedgehogs on each side of my house. It is very nice.

So climate change could actually be a good thing for wildlife...... If temperature remains warmer during Wintertime then there will be no requirement to hibernate..... Fascinating.......
