- The three-state BNSF Kootenai River Subdivision leads from Spokane, WA via Sandpoint, ID into the Rocky Mountains and Montana. The section between Spokane and Sandpoint is the lifeline of the entire northwest: All eastbound BNSF trains originating in the Pacific Northwest and all westbound trains coming from the east, bound for destinations like Seattle and Portland on the Pacific coast, use this line. It is the central western axis of the Northern Transcon, which connects to all major BNSF subdivisions in the area. For the most part, track speed for freight trains is 60 mph. For these reasons, it is probably the busiest racetrack in the northwest. Enjoy watching numerous trains in this nice area on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Note: This video has been recorded and produced in 4k Ultra-HD resolution.

What an awesome lashup tied down at Troy! :)
I just wish it had moved...
Awesome video! I caught the GECX #7872 on March 31st! He was leading NS 201 on the NS Shenandoah Valley Line! It's incredible where some of these locomotives can end up in a certain amount of time!
Thanks! That's nice you got the leaser on NS. It's truly amazing how far some of these engines travel even in short periods of time.
Awesome shots. Excellent video.
Many thanks!
Very good video, thanks for the cool shots.
Thanks for watching!
good job on the panning ,zoom, and different camera shots.
Thanks! Great you like it.
Wow this is early in morning! hehe I am lucky to be an Early Bird because I always get the worm. 😆
Haha, you're funny. Glad you do :)
Nice. Great display of motor power and rolling stock. Always great to see the war bonnet red and silver colors. Even if it’s not moving :~). 🚂
I agree, but for a videographer a train that doesn't move doesn't count ;-)
@mbmars01 Wow, you ended up seeing Santa Fe and BNSF tank cars? That's amazing!
Yeah, that was nice.
Excellent camera work. Beautiful scenery. I live near the BNSF Southern Transcon Route. All desert scenery with lots of trains, but not much else to look at. It's a "like" for you.
Many thanks. Wow, that's so cool! I have visited the Southern Transcon several times and I love it! Being out in the desert, seeing the head lights of lead engines out in the distance and having the mountains as a great scenic backdrop... Some of my best shots I took in New Mexico and Arizona. If you want, you can watch my Southern Transcon videos here on UA-cam. Just check out my channel's main page. There's a BNSF Southern Transcon playlist, easy to find.
with the mountain hills in the background , wow totally awesome views , really like that !!
I know, I love this scenery, too. There will be much more of it in the next videos.
Great video. Your my favorite UA-camr. Keep up the great work man.
I appreciate it. I'm currently working on the next video, which I already like a lot myself: Marias Pass in the Rockies :)
Nice video. The track at the 12:50 mark needs a 10 MPH slow order. The whole train was bouncing over it.
Thanks!
Great video. Thats the best video ive ever seen. I just saw a ns first responder train it was cool.
Thanks so much! That's great you saw this train. Where was it?
Ramsey, Indana. It was the hazmat safety train. www.joinnsoar.com/training.html
I see, cool. I know the train; I've seen it in Macon, GA teaching first responders.
Do you know how to find the name that you railroad subdivision is.
This can indeed be a bit tricky. If I go visit a line I haven't railfanned before, I try (typically by searching the internet) to get the division timetable of the railroad that operates in the area and this helps a lot. It contains the subdivisions of the division with mileposts, names of signals and sidings. For example, my "home line" is the CSX Abbeville Subdivision and it is part of CSX's Atlanta Division.
Nice shots, was in Sandpoint about a month prior to you. Was at all those spots plus more, thanks!
Nice! It's a good area to railfan, for sure.
@mbmars01 The MRL transfer is a nice appearance too. First it was at CP-Silver, and then it goes to the MRL 4th Subdivision at Sandpoint Amtrak.
Great video! I'm starting my rail trip soon.
Thanks! Awesome, hope you'll enjoy it!
outstanding. keep up the great videos.
Many thanks. Yep, working on more...
Nicely done bud. I took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Sandpoint in 1977. Still one of my favorite rail trips.
Thank you. Train trips through mountains are fun.
Indeed. Spent the whole trip in the front seat of a Super Dome. I was 14. I wish I still had all the pics I took, but they got lost somewhere over the years. :-/
This must have been an awesome experience.
Definitely. Some day I'll do it again, but first I want to ride coast to coast on the Crescent/Sunset Ltd, provided Richard Anderson doesn't run Amtrak out of business.
No dome cars on the Superliners any more, if they ever had them. They have the view car that has windows up on the sides and top corners, but no way to see out the front of the train. Only single decker trains have them.... I always thought it would be so cool to sit in the front of a dome car to watch out front. Back in the mid 80's we took the Empire Builder from Seattle to St Paul/Minneapolis and it was awesome. Other than the car we hit somewhere in North Dakota in the middle of the night causing a several hour delay...
Great video loved it
Cool, thanks!
MBMars I enjoyed this video on my TV lots of fun. I loved the sound of the big engines. Sorry the train with the eight engines did not move would have been a nice catch. I noticed a couple of big trains the variety of power that was on those trains. I appreciate your video it lived up to its name the race track.
That's awesome that you watched it on TV! I hope it's 4k capable :)
another awesome video @mbmars01 that was excellent and nice scenery too.
Many thanks. I'm happy you had fun watching it.
Hat's off to you my friend. Excellent video.
Many thanks, Great you liked it.
Another great video! I noticed CSX is retiring some of their CW40- 8's.Such a shame, i loved them.i remember when they were brand new.
Thanks! Well, the Dash 8s might have a second life under the auspices of the lease company.
Good vid, as usual. Keep 'em coming!
Cool, thanks.
Great video nice catches
Many thanks.
Your vídeos are great. Here in Spain is good to see railroading in not so known southeast of US and your travels to the west are nice too. I think your edit work is remarkable indeed and i'd like to see more of your work on the future. Thanks a lot for the fun a and information.
Oh I love Spain! It's so beautiful. I visited your country many times, mostly the east coast, but never for railfanning. However, I know that you have a great railway system. It's very nice you like watching the videos on this channel.
Being that I live just north of Seattle and have traveled over Steven's pass regularly for the past 30 plus years I love seeing your awesome videos showing our great area. I have to ask what type of camera gear you use though. The quality and zoom capabilities are amazing! I just wish the Eastbound Amtrak left Seattle early enough for there still to he daylight year round while going over and through the Cascades. It's some of the best scenery you can get anywhere in the nation, but they dont go over the mountains until 9:30 PM or so...
Very glad you enjoy watching those videos! It was an amazing trip to an amazing area. I wish I could have stayed longer, but there was no time. I hope I'll be able to return one day. To answer your question, I use the WXF1 camcorder by Panasonic.
That was awesome. Was gonna ask if you were going to do the Marias Pass, but saw it at the end. Love watching your videos
Thanks! Sure, Marias Pass is a must for every railan crossing the Glacier's mountains and it's easily accessible.
Hi MBMars no it is not a 4K I bought a new TV just as the 4K were being realized. Your videos are still very nice and sharp on the tv I Have
Sure thing, that's not a problem. I know they look nice in HD, too.
Great video and catches.
Nice you liked watching it.
Great video, after watching so many NS videos, you see how few EMDs BNSF and UP have
UP has and still operates a large fleet of SD70Ms, but on BNSF's through trains, one indeed only sees an occasional SD70ACe. But I don't mind, I like to understand how the lines are operated and the scenery. BNSF's orange stands out in this environment, independently of the locomotive type.
Oh yeah for sure, i to have a large fleet of UP and BNSF locomotives. I just remember that the CEO of Burlington Northern hated GE and only bought for the most part EMD and all of a sudden Santa Fe CEO started buying a ton of C44-9s until late 90s when the warbonnet returned , They have kept alive most of the fleet of SD70MACs as well, most in coal service though with the ACe. No complaints here just observations.
I love the SD70MACs. How could I forget to mention them :) From what I heard, the SD70 series EMD engines had some reliability issues and I suppose that's why BNSF consequently switched to GE power. Most of their priority trains have GEVO leaders. I know that many railfans regret this or find this boring, but I really like how efficient BNSF generally works.
On the town side of the lake, there is a small beach between the tracks and the US highway connected by a paved trail with free parking nearby. I shot video there coming soon to my channel as it offered great views of the lake, the bridge and the siding across the lake. Its going to be a tight squeeze to get a second track next to the Amtrak station.
Thanks for the information.
Very good catches bro that’s a like for you
Awesome, thank you.
mbmars01 np btw can you go see my new video and are you subbed to me?
7:31 “where is the railroad police to pull over that auto rack train with faulty headlight”
Nice video bro.
Cool, thank you.
Standpoint looks the same as it did in '97 when I rode the MRL to Sandpoint from Livingston , MT via Paradise. Heard BNSF is building a second bridge over Lake Pend Orielle. Guess the Funnel will be known as the Culvert after that 😅😅
Ah that's cool. There'll be footage of MRL in future videos. I heard that, too, and I guess, it's absolutely necessary. It would have been nice to find a nice angle to shoot trains coming over that bridge, but this didn't work out.

Ah okay, I didn't have the time to explore the area. Thanks for the info, though.
I don't know why I didn't watch this until now...putting that aside, those are some really cool catches! I've never particularly been interested in that line, until now.
As for the "racetrack" part, the Columbia River Gorge has two, and I feel like trains go way faster there. But eh...whatever. It's just a title, although trains sure were flying here.
Nice you like it! This section is double-tracked and this makes a difference. I think there are way more fast trains on this line than in the Gorge. Most sections of the Gorge lines are single-tracked; trains can only go fast if there's no opposing traffic.
Exellent video
Many thanks!
This is awesome bro Very Longest Train 👍👍👍
Thanks!
I'm a fairly new fan of trains, apart from when i was little but i didn't know much (or care) about the finer details.... but now I have a few questions I hope can be answered here for me... [A] in the old days freight trains had a caboose (called a 'guard's van' in my home country of New Zealand). Now they dont., What's changed that they arent needed any more? Was there really a guard there in the caboose? What did he do? [B] how are the additional locomotives controlled? I assume there is still a crew of 2 operating the train, so how do they control the locos that might be a long way back? [C] I see trains that look like they've got maybe 100 wagons - so how many tons of freight are they hauling typically? Anyway I do enjoy your videos mbmars01. Please keep on with them.
The cabooses were replaced by end-of-train devices and the conductor rides in the cab with the engineer. Additional locos are controlled remotely by the lead unit; distributed power units in the middle or at the end of the train are controlled by radio. Typical train weights are 5000-15000 tons. Great you like the videos!
@mbmars01 So many engines on that eastbound (C4, Fakebonnet, D9W, CP, DC, GECX, AC44, and MAC). Unfortunately, that train had to sit down at Troy, MT for a bit but how many hours is that?
I don't know how long he sat there. I left before he moved.
awesome catches.
Thanks!
Anyway I can get some cross streets to cp silver? Just moved up in the area and looking for locations to catch trains
Check out my Google Map: goo.gl/maps/zUryP
Expand the legend (Spokane east to Chicago) and scroll down to CP Silver.
Zoom in to see the immediate area.
Very Inpressive
Thank you!
awesome video when did the train move that was tied down????
I unfortunately did not see it move at all.
How is it a MRL transfer if its all bnsf power on bnsf track? Thanks. Good video.
Well, he went onto the MRL line to interchange cars. Nice, thanks!
Nice video!
Thank you!
Immense - you sure know how to make the most of your travels! Just wondering 11:05 is it accepted practice for the DPU to show white on the rear, as opposed to, say, red?
Red marker lights on locomotives are a thing of the past.
Many thanks! As far as I know, only CN still has red marker lights on DPUs.
Wait for second bridge in sandpointes it be double tracks?
That's what I heard that they are working on it.
Im currently waiting on a train but awesome video
Lol, hope you didn't need to wait for too long...
We sat there enough to go to my local store lol it sat there for a 1hr and 30 mins
It was to heavy only 2 engines on the front and 3 dpus its had to split up just to move if it didnt have 5 cars it would have made it up the hill lol
That's weird lol
Yeah i didnt except it lol
Btw what happend to all the triple crown piggybacks?
glad all those trailer's are on rail's instead of highway
Perfectly agreed!!!
Theres nothing worse than missing a NS heritage unit. Ns 8104 Lehigh Valley
I know this can be disappointing, but there's so much more to explore in the world of railroading than heritage units (which anyways only remind us of sadly fallen flags)...
mbmars01 yea i know its one I haven't seen yet
Hey Mr Mars I was wondering Is it against Railroad Regulations for a Ditch Light to be out traveling on the rails? Should they be properly replaced? correct me if I am wrong and Also Did that eight engine ever manage to move or budge any?
thank you for your time have a good day
Lol, it's certainly not correct that that light wasn't working! No, I didn't see this train move. He was tied down and the crew left while I was there.
thanks mr mars I was just wondering have a good saturday
Have a good day, too!
I can't believe you have not caught not one amtrak in that video
To compensate for this disaster, there will be two in the next video lol :)
did you see the number on the Hyrail ford at 27:45
Must be busy area
Yes, I'd guess about 50-60 trains a day.
@mbmars01 BNSF Fakebonnet #773 takes a break.
By it looks
Nice catches I subscribed to you
Nice, thanks!
mbmars01. What is a swing nose frog?
Lol, I know this sounds funny, in particular, if one has a more than just technical imagination of things. First, the V-shaped part of a switch or turnout that separates the diverging from the straight track is called a frog. On many switches, it is immobile, but this means one wheel has to cross a gap, which makes noise and can also be the cause of a derailment. A swing nose frog is a frog that can rotate about a pivot point (or "swing") and by doing so fills this gap. The wheel stays on track all the time. This is safer and reduces noise, but the downside is that it is technically more demanding and requires additional maintenance.
mbmars01. Thank you for explaining this. I figured it had something to do with the switch since that is where the sign is. I just never saw one before. I really like the way you explain things in terms we can understand. I am really enjoying the videos of the Northwest. Great shots and scenery.
Well, I'm glad it was helpful. I almost thought the explanation had gotten a bit lengthy. I actually kept researching a bit and found that wikipedia has also a page about this frog. The photo and illustrations on their page make its function quite transparent. Already watched the new video, Marias Pass? You'll surely like it ;-)
Already watched the new video. Awesome shots. I love it.
Awesome, thanks :)
It's Riddle Time, My Body Is All Yellow, I Have Two Flags On My Side, What Am I
Hm, let me think about it... 🤔
Hehe Take Your Time💖💖💖💖💖
That's WAY too complicated. It isn't anything I have seen in this video. I mean there's something like this in a future video... ;-)
LOL, ITS A UNION PACIFIC TRAIN, ITS YELLOW AND HAS TWO FLAGS, LOL 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Now that you mention it lol
racetrack?, hardly
For me it was. Up to 60mph, double-tracked, and busy. There aren’t many lines like this in this country.
He obviously meant that there would be trains racing on a purpose built racetrack..... because those are everywhere... damn some people just need to shut up...
Nice to see a train with hardly any graffiti daubed on it. Have noticed loco,s are now being targeted as well. Morons
I know, it's sad.
