- To catch this railroad on the move in summer daylight is truly a challenge. Extensive work windows during the summer months are necessary to get urgent maintenance done: This railroad operates in the Rocky Mountains in Montana, where heavy snowfalls in winter can make track work difficult. Furthermore, Montana Rail Link handles a lot of BNSF traffic, but runs only few own trains. The most famous is the "gas local", which commutes on a daily schedule between Thompson Falls and Missoula to fill a gap in a gas pipeline. Anticipating to meet the morning eastbound, I followed MRL's 10th subdivision west out of Missoula and was nonetheless surprised to actually bump into him. This beautiful area, the awesome weather, and state road MT-200 running parallel with the track invited for an extended chase east, which was great fun. It made up for the hassle the day before, when I filmed the "Logan local" kicking cars in heavy downpour (which is also in the video). However, the highlight is an MRL work train with caboose I caught near Paradise, MT. All power you'll get to see in this video is EMD made, from 50+ year-old GP35 to modern SD70ACe type locomotives.. Enjoy watching rather rare footage of MRL in action!

One thing that impresses me about the MRL is how their locos are always clean and well presented.

Great trains and scenery! MRL has one of the best paint schemes IMO and their engines are always clean and presentable! This makes me wanna take a trip out west the last time I was in Montana was in 2000 I saw a coal train with all shiny executive 70macs boy how times have changed.

You are the best u.s. railway channel on u-tube bar none. Really enjoy the close up shots of locos and wagons, it’s nice to hear big diesels ticking over while switching. Thank you. Lol, if circumstances permit, chases are fun and catching this MRL train was definitely a highlight in this scenery. And so I had no other choice than following him back eastward for 30 miles or so :) I also haven't seen a caboose like this in a long time.

Wow mb.... you had me with the MRL boxcar on the gas train until I saw the MRL Caboose on the work train and 269 running long hood forward across the bridge, oh my!!! Excellent video, MRL is right up there with the FEC and the Alaska RR in my personnel opinion. I believe I have said it before, but you have a very unique perspective that no one else does when it comes to capturing trains on video. Please keep up the great work and keep the videos coming. Thanks so much for your comment. I also got excited when I saw that caboose. Scenery and trains look more like a model railroad, almost unreal in this sunlight. I loved it and wished I had more time to stay longer. However, due to extensive summer maintenance, it is not easy to find anything moving. I think the work train had a 10-hour work window. This is unheard of on the bigger railroads.

Wonderful catches! It's amazing to see those GP35 in very good shape even after more then 50 years of service... of course is a result of good maintenance program of MRL!
The entire railroad looks like it's in good shape. I'm sure BNSF keeps an eye on MRL's maintenance as most traffic on those lines is actually generated by them.
Switching cars in the yard....now thats train action....dude..you gotta make a video package......
I love to watch when they kick cars. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad and holding an umbrella made filming somewhat cumbersome. I would had liked to capture more of the actual switching from different perspectives, but well, we take it the way it goes... :)

Montana is sparsely populated and doesn't have much industry. I think that's why MRL is actually concentrating more on service for BNSF than on running own trains. The mountain regions are truly amazing.

Yes, most of the older EMD power is second hand, but if I remember correctly, the SD70ACes that were on the gas local were purchased new.
That's kinda neat how the brief shot of the BNSF train at the end makes for a sort of segue to your next video

Look up Southern Railway of BC. (British Colubia ) . they bought a shortline that has thesame scheme!
SRY is a neat little shortline. Formerly BC Hydro Railway, which was an interurban line. The caboose on the work train was originally a BCH unit (built in 1968).

Quick question, when does the Gas Local usually leave Thompson Falls eastbound?
It's very, very nice out there. I (accidentally) caught the returning empty train at about midday, but this was 1.5 years ago. If you join the MRL Group on Facebook, the local railfans there can certainly provide up-to-date information.

Well, I perfectly understand it. I didn't travel to the NW just to enjoy the nice scenery either :) Unfortunately, it's hard to find the few trains that MRL runs for themselves; most activity is service for BNSF.

How fast was the train going? Seems like 40-50
It wasn't easy to overtake him, so I'm sure he went 45mph for the most part. There was no other train on this branch at that time that would have slowed down him.

gonzalo alvarez more like buffer car. It’s there to protect the locomotive.
it is for safety in case of fire on the diesel engines, not to put fire on hydrocarbon or chemicals tanks cars
