Pulled my release PS5 the day I got my PS5 Pro (launch day). It's been horizontal for 90% of its life. System was PRISTINE, liquid metal was perfect. Sold it with zero worries. I've decided I'm going to keep my Pro vertical for its life and tear it down similarly just to see if those ridges helped. See ya in 4 years 🤣🤣
Thank you for inspiring me to pick up my first used pc for cleaning, upgrading and of course putting the perfect amount of thermalpaste. Always a joy to watch your channel.
Steve good to see that things are moving in a positive direction it looks like with your health. Thank you as always for investigating these devices and their repairability level! Still with an original PS5 here.
Your test was on cold Liquid Metal. As soon as it gets warm that stuff is going which ever way is down so laying the console flat when playing is the best idea.
The liquid metal would start to pool down due to heat from the apu and gravity assisting it, so I would definitely agree that leaving it horizontal would be the better option.
@@Bahamut1988 Wow, good thing I have less than an hour on my 5Pro, ugh, I don’t even know where I can put it flat though… currently the only place it fits is vertical behind the tv…
I don't think grooves are improvement to cooling at all. Most CPU heatspreaders are polished ultra flat for a reason. Liquid metal is like about 80W/M-K when cooper is almost 400W/M-K and heatpipes in the range of over 1000W/M-K. So still keeping liquid metal layer as thin as possible should improve heat transfer and this grooves create unnecessary high spots. However as You said they might be neccessary to keep the liquid metal in place and not have dry spots. But if it's not the case polished and ultra flat heatspreader should give the best result (in theory of course, might be other factors). Might be worth to try and see the temp difference. Also keep in mind drop test should be done when everything is at maximum operating temperature, there's much more likely to separate liquid metal when hot.
Oh wow! UA-cam hasn’t recommended one of your vids in a while. You’re looking great, I hope that means your cancer treatment went well. Here’s to your health, I just subscribed so I don’t have to wait for UA-cam to recommend your vids.
Glad to see you are getting better bro! Love your channel and your work! Glad they added grooves on the heatsink, makes sense it’ll help with surface tension and cooling.
Is it my imagination or did that liquid metal really seem to spread out a lot easier that what you've done in the past? Or are you just getting a lot better at it???
I'm not a gamer but seen your clips on fb so came here, somehow interesting seeing the guts of technology from different eras, plus just listening to knowledge on these things which I know nothing about is fascinating
My ps5 pro dropped a few feet from the ground. Within the first 14 hours of owning it 😢. But it still runs fine! I'm glad to see the major improvements on the pro! I been taking apart the launch model and cleaning it myself. Even modified the cooler parts where they made there revisions. These holes above the power bank. Also i had to modify my ps5 launch models power supply. I made it to where there's more airflow to the power supply so it don't shut off on me no more! No more 18 minute gameplay to get shut off randomly. Now the ps5 can stay on for days without turning off out of no where.
I guess i was fortunate my day 1 base console never had any issues. No fan or liquid metal problems. And so far Pro is running like a champ and quiet as a mouse
I'd definitely be interested in the results from a hot drop test, as opposed to this cold drop test. Machine on and heat soaked, couple 6in drops...results
You are looking great praying for a complete recovery. Great video as usual and yes sometimes that little testing will tell you a lot about the product. Keep them coming :P
Thoroughly enjoy your content Mr. Steve! Thanks for showing us the changes to the heatsink on the Pro, I run my system vertically so its nice to hear they are trying to mitigate prior issues.
Great spot with the heatsink machining! That could work with the surface tension of the LM to keep an evenly spread. Glad the heatsink entry points where carpets can form are easily accessible too, and the vacuum ports look to be in a better place than on the original, too. All that plus the easily swappable CMOS battery means a lot of these may never need to be opened up if they’re taken care of and get lucky as far as power surges and things go.
My original PS5 stayed in the upright position for 4 years no issues … I just replaced it with the Pro.. as long as it gets me another 3-4 years I’m happy. I will be tearing down the old one to get it ready for resell - it will be interesting to see if any of my Liquid Metal moved or oxidized!!

It's brand new with no oxidation anywhere so I think that's the main thing that made it easier.

Doesn’t it need to have heat on the Liquid Metal so that it would move over time?

I'm guessing the grooves are to help the liquid metal hold surface tension. A bit leery at the outer heat sink being held in only with paste though.
