Bubba man...I can't tell you how much your videos help me. I just got into welding at school and I love it. Just sucks that the teachers always rushing because he has so many people to deal with. That's why videos at a calm pace like this help out so much!
6013 rods are ok for maintenance repairs ,small projects and on the farm. You wont find 6013 rods used on any serious structural steel project or on code welds. Personally, I almost never use them. In fact the only times I have used 6013 in the last 30 years was to teach padding beads to beginners.
finished with gas last week in school, had first class with arc using same rod you demonstrated & i was at 85 amps. Has a hard time with sticking & getting used to how rapidly the rod gets used up. This helps a lot. Next class will go better! Thanks for this video.
This is THE welding video in UA-cam which taught the beginner of me to use a higher AMP and keep a short arc. I noticed 7018 is butter smooth like this, even if it touches the plate. Now 'it clicked' for me after couple of days of unsuccessful attempts to weld.
Great video Bubba! I just started my welding school last week & this video is exactly what we're doing. I realised quickly that having the machine calibrated properly for the type of metal & thickness is very crucial & makes the job much easier. Thank You for the upload and I'm looking forward to seeing more from you.
I did similar with driving an excavator and a haul truck, half buckets real slow, dig bottom all over the show then cut it straight and true with full buckets good and fast, drove the haul truck slow and backed it up all over the show and rolled the body on the tip then drove fast and smooth fast cycles and hit the bucket line bang on every load, asked the foreman whether he wanted to pay £8/hr or £14, ended up on a dozer on £16/hr with a van and a fuel card for them, turns out he liked the fact I could drive all their plant better than any of the other guys who only drove one piece of plant.
Oh and I have been watching your videos for a long time now from my senior year in h.s. and I'm now a apprentice with local 455 your tig videos are very useful. And Bubba has a good sense of humor.
@@eastsideCHIEF fuckin rite bro im a JIW 20 years local 7 Boston I remember getting out of the apprenticeship so free and so happy but alas, the years start to fly by and all of a sudden you're an old man!
This has been really helpful. My welding so far has all been self taught, and I can make a solid joint but it's not pretty. Your videos have given me the pointers I need to do some practice work. I liked the joke-I expect I am about an 8.50 and hour welder.
Thanks :) just got hired as a fitter welder though I made it a point to say I'm not a welder , I'm not , I can mig all day long and my stick is ok , my tig is noneexisten, but they still got me sticking so I'm going with it , good tips . I will practice tomorow
Well in theory you could just keep running passes over and over and stack them for practice. So then you are not just doing 6 or 8 passes and then scraping it. I like this video a lot, as well as all your vids. very very knowledgeable on everything you speak of and I have learned a ton from these vids. helped me get a few different welding jobs.
I have total respect for Jody to share his god like welding skills with us all. By the way why are you watching tips and tricks if you can weld better ?
I'm novice when it comes to welding, havent been doing it for very long, but ive gotten the nice opportunity to use a wide variety of welding rods, but i would try it with 6010 or 6011, i hope other people give input to tho, its nice to have a variety of opinions :)
Great camera work. There is one edit that it looks like you reverse direction without cleaning off the slag. I agree with your strategy of showing how-to more than how-not-to. You set the bar for welding videos.
Hey Jody do you mind making a playlist with all your jokes and stories? I really enjoy them but can remember which videos have them. Also keep up the good works. God bless
if you can do more stick weldings... and the tips that accompany them... I love the welding (I felt in love of it some recent time ago) but I have so little practice and I have to see how others handle this thing. From where I am, I see a lot of Bubba part2 (the 9$) weldings, and they are so proud and they don't tell anyone their secrets. :)) Thanks for your post.
I got welding in high school and i love it. I hope i can make a career out it. Our big project was a V block. Im only in ninth grade but i love it and pretty ok especially for a beginner
Hey bubba i bought a cheap stick welder always admiered weld so wanted to see if i would like it. It's a 110v/220 250 hardware but put a 30 amp camper outlet on it i can't and it to start an arc i grinded down old 1960s wheel barrel down to the bare metal i know this is probably a dumb question i know ware I'm welding needs to be clean but dose the spot where the ground clamp go is attached need to be nice and shined up as well I would appreciate any other beginners tips and tricks on currently looking around my area for welding schools but like I said I want to mess around with this first thanks for your time
Started Tech school about a month ago, my major is welding. So I go through mig, tig, and stick. So far I've only had some experience with it. But mostly what I've learned is from schooling. What could I do to get better with all types?
Hey Jody, please do the jokes at the end, I kept thinking about Bubba and had to watch the video three times without laughing to figure out what the video was about. :) Also want to put in a vote for a few more stick vids.
Enjoyed the joke at the beginning. I don't think I've ever seen anyone weld that badly though, besides people who have never welded before. I've only been welding for about 7 months, but I think I'm decent.
ROTFLMAO Great story, in fact, great insentive for those learning, to set the standards on which you want to be payed for! Remember the beads you lay, on each project, are the facts that build your experience, talents & reputation, you are what you make it and no one can take that from you. :) Keith
in mi first class of welding we used 6013 on used metal parts just to get familiar using a stick i have seen many videos that will help me on next clases but .. i notice that my weldings were a litle thick.. that its normal? or it should be almost like the surface that im soldering? my prof told me that I needed a bit more of practice but i have my doubts,, the slag came out pretty easily and i had sompe problems starting the arc any sugestion?
Thanks for your reply. Sure, I work on light constructions like frames from tubes with a wall about 1 mm. A question is actually about to compare rutile or low-hydrogen basic coatings of the electrodes. 7014 or 7024 vs. 7018. Even on structural projects someone has to restart arc by a cold rod. Rutile electrodes make easy restart and produce low toxic fumes. It also depends on producer. Kobe is superior to Yawata despite these are both Japanese. MIG does better job for me but I just love MMA.
4G bevel plate is tough for me.. I have no problem with the hot pass and fill.. its just the cap that gets me.. My hands are somewhat shaky from military service, so its tough to get a uniform bead/cap from end to end.. I use the stinger cable as a sling so I can cradle my lead hand.. is there any way i can stabilize my lead hand just a little more? Please help if you can.. thanks
QUESTION ! I have some weird bead behaviour with stick welding. When i try to weld e.x. butt joints or a T joint, the bead looks ok when welding, but upon removing the slug, the metal hasnt joined the two halves-ends. But instead it has made two seperate metal deposition beads in each edge without being joined together! Whats the catch here ? When i try pumping more amps, holes are immenant !
stick is much hotter than normal mig, so if you are welding thick steal get a stik welder you will get proper penetration instead of getting cold fusion. if your welding thinner steel then go for a normal mig. I recommend getting a garage TIG/Stick machine from miller, its not that powerful bit it can work
The main reason they use MMA on site is because it requires no shielding gas due to the electrode having a coating which when heated acts as a inert gas,and the second reason is because because the welds are more flexible. Im only n apprentice but i'm really good at MIG and TIG and pretty good at stick but we dont use it at our place apart from some filtering baskets
LMAO! OMG that was too funny. I guess I'm a 9$ an hour welder....Thanks for that I really got a good laugh. I am new to your channel and so far you are on the mark. Could I mention you and your channel in a future video I will be doing? -John
I have a question its pretty important when welding if you run a bead on top of another bead but in the opposite direction does it put tension or stress on the metal or does it affect the way it warms distorts or diatribes heat what's your take ? Tag me in a reply thanks.
My slag, I always chop it off with hammer... because its so thick (maybe 1mm) and very hard to break without it, + it looks very similar with the finishing welding (silver_ish and a bit darker). I chop it hard and in the final it brakes like a egg shell. But is very tricky for the eye and I miss it sometimes... brushing or scratching has no effect on it. I use a 6013 rod stick with an inverter with 200 max Amp. I always use its max 190 /195 Amp because if its too low, it stick often.
first let me say i like your video..i just started stick welding and i am having problems with my root pass w/ the 6010 on a eight inch gap. help me out bro.
i'm no expert but it's my understanding that running too hot will make the slag hard to chip off. 6013 slag should chip off real well. perhaps if you steady your hand more you won't stick the rod as often.
lets see that everlast, i got a longevity and the settings for the most part line up pretty good. this miller just doesnt translate over quite as well lol
My beads like amazing 55% and 45% strike marks, rod sticks, can't even get a good arc distance. I have done that on a t-weld. Done a great bead on one side. Go to the next and it just seems to be made out of another type of metal.
Sorry about this, but as a veryRookieHobbyist I must ask this: What kind of rod do you use for "any serious structural steel project"? There is some debate that using a auto darkening helmet can ruin your vision somewhat if you weld full time for many years. The helmets don't darken for a extremely small fraction of a second, in which your eyes are getting flashed by the arc. Everyone agrees that it is not a major problem. It's just something to think about.
