Try to find good deals on equipment and if you can, try to learn how to fix them to cut down on repair costs. Many times a $30 carb replacement can be done for free by cleaning it if you know how.
honestly I feel like working on your own equipment is a NECESSITY for any kind of serious work involving combustion motors, even electric ones... not just lawncare either especially if your starting out
Most of the mowers I've used were given to me because they didn't run. I've been able to get them back up and running for little to no cost so I end up with a $200 machine that works great for free.
What if you are trying to get your business name out there in say Alabama? Is it smart to market yourself in an Alabama shirt? You kind of alienate all the Auburn fans. Lol!

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT advice! I'm on my 6th year, but didn't REALLY start getting serious until 3 years ago. Business has been going well, but I JUST decided on a business name and registered with my city. 😎
+rodney holmes better late than never. I am starting my 11th year and still learning a lot myself. A good business name and logo can definitely help your potential to reach more customers. People just take you a little more serious
what has been holding me back for quite awhile is worrying about all the legal parts. I came across a bright young kid on you tube that said why are you stressing about that when you have no work? So since seeing that video i should have a logo made by tomorrow and soon as that comes in i will order some postcards and business cards. My main question about putting postcards door to door, do i select which houses or just hit them all? What i mean is in my neighborhood where i live there are about 20 houses that do not look like they have been cut yet this season, while other houses are already getting cut. Do i focus on the yards that need a cut or hit every door?
Hey Hi! Could you or anyone please recommend a professional lawn mower no very expensive. I am extremely very serious. And can i use Honda muti tool for commercial purposes. Pls kindly advise.

I started at 10 years old had no father laid in bed at 9 trying to figure out how make money started with a real push mower hand edger still got my hand trimmer bought in 1970 now I am 59 and started again back then I charged 3 dollars for front 5 for front and back edged and trimmed by hand ended up with 42 customers
I’m just getting my lawn care started I started in June of last year (2017) mowed 6 regular weekly 3 on call and a few one time mows. It is now January of ‘18 when is a good time to start marketing for spring? Do I start now or wait closer to mowing season? Thanks “RONS LAWN CARE”
+Rons Lawn Care Quality Service there's always some marketing that can be done year-round such as posting on Facebook and that sort of thing. As for conversion marketing tactics such as door hangers and postcards, I would wait till the weather begins to warm up. I find that most people make those decisions very quickly so the likelihood of them holding onto a postcard for a month to call you later is not very good, though it that does happen sometimes. I would look to put out postcards in late February or early March here in the south.

Brandon Elam Thanks Brandon I’m in Sullivan county Tn. I mowed in Kingsport area last year, going to try and get into the Bristol And Johnson City areas this year. GOOD LUCK
Hey man I have a question if you could answer for me. I have a yard the takes me about 25-30 min to cut with a self propelled Honda mower, plus weed eating and leaf blowing. The man wants it bagged and he likes his yard clean and all. I pay my guy 9$ an hour. I raised it this year from 25$ to 30$. Did I make the right choice? My customer thinks I’m going to high and will get back to me and let me know.
I think you did the right thing. It's important for you to determine your prices and not let the customer. $30 is still a very reasonable rate even for a very small lawn
I know that this is kind of an old video so I don’t expect a response but in the first year you said 50 customers is pretty good. Is that 50, one time customers or is it 50 continuing customers? Also do you dabble in snow removal during the winter? I could see that being something great to do during the off season of lawn care professionals other than planning.
What are some good educational courses or classes to learn specific skills other than trial and error? ie; fertilization, tree trimming/planting/transplanting, flower beds, sidewalk steam clean etc?
joshua Murphy . You have to check your local library. That's a great resource. Also, loxal college or tech schools. Park and recreation for your town or city can be a resource.
First thing I did is paid all my financial bills off my goal is just to have 30 yards bring my partner on work this summer and take the winners off my monthly bills are $200 a month so I say I've already got a pretty good start
Man, I love your videos! I started my company late last season and they have been a great help! Just started my youtube channel too. Throwing up my first videos this weekend.
Yeah well said but the marketing is the second most important thing to think about and do, make sure you create a mission statement and do it cost effectively don't cheap out on advertising, research the costs of getting your company listed in phone book, get in the newspaper, knock on doors.
I seen a video of yours where you said you live in Alabama. How do you survive the winter? I'd love to go full time but i want to get that part figured out first.
Hey Jason, I am really interested in starting a lawn care business. I already have some of the equipment, truck, trailer, trimmers, and backpack blower. The only thing I don't have is a lawn mower, is there a store brand you'd recommend.
Is there a insurance company you would recommend for lawn care? I only do residential but ever company i talked to keeps trying to get me to buy the commercial policy.
I think in general it is called a commercial liability policy. I think it covers you for Residential Properties also. I'm not sure if there is a policy just for residential
You said in another video that you had 270 customers. Serviced with one truck? And one part-timer? How? And 50 customers in my first year? In my dreams! That could definitely not be handled by one person.
Do you mean the frequency and/or cost per treatment is less, so you need more customers to earn the same amount of money? I assumed you were weed treating the customers you mow. There are people who will hire you to treat their weeds yet they insist on using someone else to mow their lawns?
I was wondering if you want to do lawn care in different counties do you get license from every county or is there a general one or would that be a landscaper license???????
Got a question for Jason Creel, I live in Ellis Co Texas. Do I need a licence to specifically apply weed and feed and 2,4d to my customers lawns. Of course I've researched extensively on Google and on Texas dept of agriculture website, all I get is over complicated, impossible to understand answers. Or from the Lawnsite thread, every answer is exactly opposite of the one before! Just need a yes or no. I have 2 million $ general liability insurance, and I'm asking specifically about the 2 treatments mentioned above. Thanks in advance, MadMike and Son Lawn Care.
Hi, Jason! I’m interested in buying maintenance company for loans. Maybe you can recommend me some of them in USA? Or maybe you interested in partner ?
50 customers is pretty good, so let's say it takes 45 min to mow a yard and most beginning companies charge 45 an HR to that comes to 35.5 hrs total. 35.5 hrs x 45usd is $1320/week and this can change through out the week, but at this point it would be a full time job. And $1320 is before fuel, maintenance, oil, and paying ur employee if u have one. But yeah. Me and a friend is starting our own and this video helped!
Thanks brother help me alot

First thing I did is paid all my financial bills off my goal is just to have 30 yards bring my partner on work this summer and take the winners off my monthly bills are $200 a month so I say I've already got a pretty good start
Man, I love your videos! I started my company late last season and they have been a great help! Just started my youtube channel too. Throwing up my first videos this weekend.

Great video thanks for the advice and information
How do you get clientele
The best channel and your information is indepth and very easy to understand and not just saying, Hey look at my awesome mower, Equipment and stripes.
Roll Tide!!!!!!! LOL, keep up the good work man. love the videos.
Hey do u get paid at end of month how much you charge
Yeah well said but the marketing is the second most important thing to think about and do, make sure you create a mission statement and do it cost effectively don't cheap out on advertising, research the costs of getting your company listed in phone book, get in the newspaper, knock on doors.
Quality advice. I will take this into account next year, my second year.
+HLW Lawn Service in my experience, the second year typically goes much better than the first
I seen a video of yours where you said you live in Alabama. How do you survive the winter? I'd love to go full time but i want to get that part figured out first.
Shovel
Hey Jason, I am really interested in starting a lawn care business. I already have some of the equipment, truck, trailer, trimmers, and backpack blower. The only thing I don't have is a lawn mower, is there a store brand you'd recommend.
It depends on your budget. I like Scag, Gravely, Exmark and Hustler. They all make different levels of mowers
Here is a good video for starting a lawn care business: ua-cam.com/video/Fh0wZTJ_koM/v-deo.html
Did you start?
Is there a insurance company you would recommend for lawn care? I only do residential but ever company i talked to keeps trying to get me to buy the commercial policy.
I think in general it is called a commercial liability policy. I think it covers you for Residential Properties also. I'm not sure if there is a policy just for residential
Lawn Care Life if you had to recommend one for someone doing the work solo who would you say?
8:50 hahahahaha i cannot stop laughing!
Ha!!!
M'kay
Hahahahaha
You said in another video that you had 270 customers. Serviced with one truck? And one part-timer? How? And 50 customers in my first year? In my dreams! That could definitely not be handled by one person.
I am doing weed control and fertilization which takes many more customers than mowing lawns
Do you mean the frequency and/or cost per treatment is less, so you need more customers to earn the same amount of money? I assumed you were weed treating the customers you mow. There are people who will hire you to treat their weeds yet they insist on using someone else to mow their lawns?
tom brady is dat u?
Very funny
First thing I thought.
Lol twin brother?
Yep
If he went undrafted
I was wondering if you want to do lawn care in different counties do you get license from every county or is there a general one or would that be a landscaper license???????
Oh ok thank you for responding Jared I'm really enjoying your videos thanks for helping with your time and experience.
Yea 8D I noticed after I posted jaja
But thanks anyway
Got a question for Jason Creel, I live in Ellis Co Texas. Do I need a licence to specifically apply weed and feed and 2,4d to my customers lawns. Of course I've researched extensively on Google and on Texas dept of agriculture website, all I get is over complicated, impossible to understand answers. Or from the Lawnsite thread, every answer is exactly opposite of the one before! Just need a yes or no. I have 2 million $ general liability insurance, and I'm asking specifically about the 2 treatments mentioned above. Thanks in advance, MadMike and Son Lawn Care.
Yes, you need a license unless Texas is different than other states. You can call the State Department of Agriculture
I made 100 dollars a week back then
Wait what?? Isnt the business license and all that super expensive? How can just anyone go and get that?
Not necessarily. Dba and insurance, equipment and advertising is 3500 and 6500 from zero to mowing for a living.
Thanks Jason...love the videos
+Dream Team Nation glad the videos are helpful
Hi, Jason! I’m interested in buying maintenance company for loans. Maybe you can recommend me some of them in USA? Or maybe you interested in partner ?
This was a very helpful video. Thank you for sharing!
Too many people think they can skip these first steps, then they give low quotes and screw up the rates in the area.
Good tips. 👍
I'm serious and I have made my mind to start out my own business. Great video brother

Here is another great UA-cam channel for landscapers and lawn care: ua-cam.com/users/MikeAndes

Great Advise. . . . . WAR EAGLE ! ! !
You only need one advice. 1-don’t start a lawn care business. It sucks. Lol
Have you had a bad experience?
50 customers is pretty good, so let's say it takes 45 min to mow a yard and most beginning companies charge 45 an HR to that comes to 35.5 hrs total.
35.5 hrs x 45usd is $1320/week and this can change through out the week, but at this point it would be a full time job. And $1320 is before fuel, maintenance, oil, and paying ur employee if u have one. But yeah. Me and a friend is starting our own and this video helped!
Glad to hear you're starting a lawn business. You'll definitely want to try to make more than $45 per hour
@@lawncarelife Thx, we are doing 40/hr for family and 50/hr for non family. But depending on the yard tho
Great advice....
