Fix an Unresponsive Keyboard Switch [No Compressed Air]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2021
- Hi, this is an easy tutorial on how to fix your Mechanical switches if they don't work or are unresponsive. All you need to do is take the keypads off of the affected Unresponsive Mechanical Switches and put rubbing alcohol 70% or higher which I recommend onto the unresponsive Mechanical Switches. Make sure the alcohol soaks into them really well and then you need to click vigorously on the unresponsive Mechanical Switches as well as flick them to make sure any debris will get dislodged from the unresponsive Mechanical Switch's mechanism. Let it dry for a minimum of 20 minutes to be safe but you can use a hairdryer to make the process faster but not too hot, you dont want it to melt. After all that, you can plug in your Mechanical Keyboard and will notice that you have fixed it!
Have fun playing your games again, and writing essays... osu!
Hopefully this worked for you. If you want more content, make sure to like and subscribe and hit the bell.

i recommend waiting atleast 12 hours, if not you might short your keys and you will have to replace them.
But cant u just a hairdryer
Technically you can, not too hot though. But even then it might take time to evaporate completely.
I just pinned the comment so that I wouldn't be liable if anyone's keyboard explodes or something.
Most keyboard keys are quite resistant anyway, so even if they don't respond after you let them dry for a couple of hours, just wait and let it dry completely over 24hours and it should be fixed and clean (just a small note I thought I should add)
why would you even wait this long? he used 70% rubbing alcohol which dries in seconds.
Since the alcohol enters inside the switch, it doesnt have enough airflow to make it dry at the same speed as it would just on an open surface.
At first I didn't think this video/tutorial wouldn't work and I would have to buy compressed air, but it actually worked, thank you so much
:D
it actually worked! I watched like 10 videos and they wouldn't work at all. then i stumbled on your video and it fixed every issue. I seriously dont know how to thank you at all.
How many people watching this *after* ordering a new keyboard...
Just got my new keyboard few days back and few of the switches were kinda delayed registering the input. Thought I need to return it to the seller, but now they're working! Thank you very much for your tutorial! I'll do this first before replacing new switches if the others facing the same issue.
My keyboard is one of those rip-off mechanical ones you get on the internet, I thought I was gonna have to buy another better original one but you saved me a lot of time, I don't know how to thank you!
Didn't expect such a simple way of fixing it would actually work, thank you for this :)
thank God I found this 2 years ago video, I've been frustrated to my mechanical keyboard because of this thank you so much bro.
Glad to hear it!
It's working so great! Last night I just do it immediately and everything is working fine. Lucky enough my keyboard switch is hotswap so I remove it from keyboard and it also make it easier for me to dry it so I don't have to wait for a long time. And right now there's no more issue.
Thank you so much! This worked really well for me! My "P" Key was broken, but thanks to you it works now! I subscribed and liked!
Came with no expectations, left with a working button. You have my thanks.
man this deserves more likes ive been searching though the internet for a solution until I came across this one IDK how did ur method ever work tbh thx!
Thanks for sharing this information, very useful indeed!
Amazing! It worked once again. thanks for the video bro.
So simple yet effective! Thank you bro
No problem!
man I don't know how to thank you , you literally saved me a lot of money and time ❤❤
Glad I could help!
hella useful, will definitely use this if it ever happens to me 🙏
That almost seems like a damaged switch leaf (the gold part inside). That will need replaced to fully fix. If it was dirty, doing this removes any lubrication in the switch, so be mindful of that. ALCOHOL is non-conductive, so you only need to wait about 2 mins for it to dry, unless you REALLY soaked it.
A better alternative for cleaning these would be Electrical Contact Cleaner such as BW100. It is non-conductive, non-flammable, non-toxic, and removes corrosion, dirt, grime, and other nasties that prevent an electrical connection from working as intended. It also dries in a few seconds. (Use in a well-ventilated room, however, because BW100 uses perfluoro heptane; which is a fluorinated precursor to gasoline and can make you feel a tiny bit funny!)
thank you so much, I had this problem since 2020 and had to endured it till this month when it became unbearable. I did not expect that this would work! Appreciate it a lot for this!
You're welcome!
when my w key for my keyboard was not working for my keyboard and after doing the what you said i thought it wasn't gonna work until was shock it did thank you
That's worked. Thanks so much man
Omg it actually works!!thanks man
i cant believe this actually worked tysm!
YO IT ACTUALLY WORKED! THANKS BRO, I HOPE YOU GOT A GOOD DAY ALSO MAN, THANK YOU FOR THIS SO SO MUCH!
Dude... !! it actually worked for me and i tested it for 2 hours playing apexlegend and it works so well
Thank you so much bro u saved me 😄❤
Hey I’ll try this on my keyboard maybe that’s the problem haha Also, that’s very kind of you to share that with us so thank you!🙂
It worked! I can finally use my keyboard again after 2 years! Thank you!
That's great news!
Tysm this actually worked I've tried every method and this is the only one that worked. Love😍
Very cool! It might ruin the lube tho.
you are a life saver! thank you for sharing this knowledge!
Thanks for your comment, glad I could help!
Thank you for this vid! It worked! Usually don't comment on youtube but wanted to thank op and let others know. My "w" key began to have problems registering for 2 weeks and eventually stopped working while in the middle of an fps game. Tried other methods but nothing worked; unplugged and re-plugged usb, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, cleaned out the keyboard, applied compressed air and rapid clicking, but no tricks seemed to work until I found this video. Followed the tutorial and then let it dry for 30min and now it works perfectly. Great tutorial!
Thanks for your comment!
Am trying this now wish me luck
It worked thank you so much both
Works for me. Thanks!
Man! It worked!! Thank you so much!!
Great to hear!
Wow Bro! thanks for this tip. I was about to buy a new keyboard and I followed your tutorial and now it works just fine.
Happy to hear that! 😊
This actually worked!! Thanks a plenty!! The 'M' key and the left arrow key on my CoolerMaster CK530 gave me a headache for months.. Previously, I had to deliberately and consciously press the 'M' key and I had to smash on the left arrow key for them to register any response.. It got really bad that I even considered opening and soldering-in some new switches..
I left it to dry for 30 minutes and I used a dryer while pressing those keys repeatedly, and it actually worked..
Lol same model and same key having the same problem xD
wtf same model and also m key
same keyboard but left arrow key, it seems its just a shitty keyboard@@morgenmuffellp8494
Holy crap it worked... I'm amazed, thank You. Also I used lower % alkohol, just alcohol for disinfection (around 70%)
You're welcome! I also used 70% alcohol since that's what I had around, it's just marginally safer to use a higher percentage.
It actually WORKED!!! I don't post comments on a youtube video but I have to Thank you!!!!! I can finally continue using Colemak Keyboard layout! My "o" Key had that problem for at least 3 Months and because of that I reverted back to QWERTY, But now I can finally continue using Colemak.
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
NO WAY IT ACTUALLY WORKED!! MY 2 AND / KEY WERE SO IRRITATING LOL THANKS SO MUCH
Thank you so much, I didn't expect this to work, it tooks much more Isopropyl Alcohol for me since I have Optical Switches, but either way, thank you
Glad that I could help!
This is a nice video 🎉
yooooooo it worked thank you so much! i was already thinking about a new keyboard
Glad I could help!
I was about to buy a new one. But you saved me from buying. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much this really helped me
Glad that it helped!
i used compressed air and it worked ok it was still kinda broken but i use my keyboard anyway and this was my old keyboard i was trying to restore and it worked thank you
THANJKYOUUUU SMMMMM U HELPED ME ALOTTTT NONE OF THE SOLUTIONS HAVE WORKED BEOFER , NOW MY W KEY WORKS WWWWWWWWWWWW
Thanks bro you helped me a ton
Glad to hear that!
Wow it works. thanks.
Thank you so much this helped alot
Glad it helped!
Would you recommend doing this on a laptop? My HP OMEN 17 has a shallow mechanical keyboard with shorter circle-shaped switches that seem to have less openings for the alcohol to get in than your keys do. I'm just worried about shorting some more serious components beneath the keyboard.
If some of your keyboard switches do have issues with responsiveness, then you could definitely do this.
However, i would use a higher percentage alcohol, like 99% just so there would be no risk of corrosion, and alcohol isnt conductive. Theres not much risk of shorting, more of a risk of corrosion (no risk with 100% alcohol).
Also make sure you shutdown your laptop and unplug it from power just to be safe.
Edit: if your laptop is still under warranty check with HP, you might get free laptop or something.
I got my new apex 7 and my alt not response everytime. I will try this tomorrow, i hope it's working bc i dont want to return my keyboard.
omg thank you this worked!!
thank you so much!!!
helped a lot
Glad to hear that!
i did it with water and feels like it's a new key lol
Nice video but i do need to ask, is that like a 20% keyboard?
edit: never mind, its a number pad
Thanks bro 🙏
I had no isopropyl alcohol at hand so I removed the cap and blowed in there while mashing the key, works again. I have to say mechanical keyboards are nice but way less reliable then the old membranes, I never had any problems with membranes of the past but mechanicals have a few issues here and there. The membrane protects the keyboard insides, but with mechanical its pretty exposed.
Hi,one question if the button is like shift or space do i need to put alcohol on side switches too or only the middle(main)one?
Only the middle one since that's where the actual switch is. The ones on the sides are just to stabilize the button and don't actually have any electrical components in them.
don't know how tf it is working but bless you ...
worked for me, thanks a lot
No problem!
It work for me, thanks
ty so much bro i love you
IMG THANK YOU SO MUCHHHHHHHHHH YOU SAVED ME(btw my left SHIFT key is broken...now its fixed THANK YOUUUUUUUU)
Just tried this one and it worked.
ok so my z key was not working at all for last 2 months and this helped, thanks man!
No problem!
My good this is magic! it works and fix my "E", "F" and "Z".
This helped my keyboard, Just using it right now and it feels good, Most of my keys would randomly not respond and i'd have to hit it an extra 2-5 times until it would register, This solution seem to has fixed whatever fucked issue it had. Thank you alot, I'll try to keep you update with how it goes after a day or 2
Thats great! All putting alcohol does is dislodge and remove any dust particles stuck in the switch preventing proper contact.
@@YoussGm The keyboard was brand new from a store, It really couldn't have been dust or particles? I hope
It might be residue from the manufacturing process. I have no idea tho.
My s key randomly stopped working, cuz I noticed when I press down on it it doesnt come back up as fast as the other keys, now it doesnt register anymore so il try this. + it gets stuck halfway
i cant believe this actually work lol this vid is very helpful
eyo bro you save my life, thank you so muchhhhhh
LMFAO bro I just poured a drop of the rubbing alcohol on and flicked it a few times and dabbed with a paper towel and it actually worked. Thanks man.
Thanks for commenting, i'm glad to hear that!
This worked for me.
SAVEDDDDD ME FROM BUYING A NEW KEYBOARDDDD, HOMIE!! THANK YOU!! Workedddd like a charm!! (p.s. "D" was the annoying key that wasn't always working when pressedddd so I'm really enjoying using it now hehe)
p.s. 2.0, I play Apex and the like and you have no idea how many times I wanted to strafe right and I died due to "D - Strafe Right" not working 100% of the time. Thanks again, man. Was literally on Amazon about to buy a keyboard but thought I'd see what I could do quickly before I do and BOOM :DDDDD
Amazing! Glad that this video helped! Especially since it's one of my most low effort videos lmao.
sadly it didnt work for me I think its cause I use the wrong alcohol it didn't short the PCB but it did not work
thank u very much sir
Most welcome
yall ima try it out and i hope for the best
thank you so much omggg ilyyy
Happy to help!
holy #¤@% that problem was so annoying to have. Thank you very much.
thanks for the video dude, i was using 99% iso propyl alcohol on one of my switch but it kept going bad the next day, mu dumbass didnt realize i needed to shake and flick the debris away till i saw this video
Glad to have helped! Thanks for watching!
omg it worked 😭😭😭😭😭😭❤❤❤ ty so muchhh
Glad to hear that!
thanks mate
So will any sanitizer work or I'll have to buy a 90% alcohol?
Alcohol is recommended, 70% or more.
Sanitizer may leave a residue that can make the switch worse than before.
bro thank yoU so mUch for helping me fix my U key. I was really annoyed it woUld only work sometimes bUt now it works all the time. Tip: Press down the key for a coUple seconds to let the alcohol sink in.
Glad to have helped yoU, seems like yoU really liked yoUr U key!
I sUre do!@@YoussGm
I have a switch it works but i need more press than others what solution should i use alchol or it a default problem on switch
I mean the actual point are not same compared to other switch on same kb
It could probably be fixed with these instructions, as there may be dust between the contacts so a harder press would make it work.
It won't hurt to try cleaning it with alcohol.
does this work with a less alcohol like 20% or higher or 50% or higher or it needs to be 70% and higher?
Well it would work but there is a higher risk of corrosion. So you will need to let it dry for way longer amd maybe use a warm, NOT hot hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
@@YoussGm bro i wish you a good life it worked i found 100% alcohol i was sad my mechanical keyboard was broken but i followed your tut and it worked very well thanks bro fr
wtfffffff THIS WORKED OMG I LOVE YOU!!!!! God bless you...... I almost gave up but then i trie it with nail polish remover and SOAKED my switch while pressig down as hard as i can and now my w is working again wwwwwwwwwwwww hahahaha wwwwwwwwwwww
my guy u have saved me for a few 100 bucks u are god send
Insane, glad to have helped!
Thank you very much
Glad that it worked!
will Han gel work??? or will it just ruin my Keyboard?
@galaxypickaxe1600 it could work. If theres aloe gel i wouldnt use it.
Try rubbing some between your hands, if you feel sticky or any residue, use at your own risk.
I used hand gell and it worked, I tried more than 20 times and it worked. I guess I pushed the W key to hard when i am gaming LMAO. Thanks man now my mum don't have to spent another 150£ on a mechanical keyboard xD
Glad to know this helped!
@@YoussGm oes han gel work??? i ont wanna ruin my keyboar. also guess what is key is broken :)
@@GalaxyPickaxe it could work. If theres aloe gel i wouldnt use it.

I LOVE MANN THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Thanks man
No problem!
WOW. Worked! :-o
are there any alternative of alcohol ?
I would not recommend using anything other than alcohol. You can read the other comments, some had success with hand sanitizer and other liquids.
You a my hero😊
Thank you!
Bro can i directly spray the alcohol/80% perfume on the switch rather than soaking it in and then applying it
Yes you can if you have the accuracy to make some of the alcohol enter inside the switch.
@@YoussGm Brother thank you so much ❤. You have no idea how much you helped me and everyone else, I just got a brand new mechanical keyboard for an expensive price, and the R and U keys were not working, thought I had to replace it. I tried all tutorials but all of them required compressed air, which I didn't have. Right when I was about to lose hope, I found your video. Thank u so much bro! ❤ You got a new sub and like
@@mariafarhan1829 Thank you!
Thanks, managed to restore 4 keys with that method so far and 2 more left to fix
That's great!
It's fixed now :)
dude thank you!!!...
You're welcome!
thanks for the heart
No problem!
what type of alcohol is best or can you use anything?
Any alcohol above 60%. The lower the percentage, the longer it's gonna take to dry.
Also nothing that leaves any residue when it dries like moisturizing hand sanitizer or other stuff
@@YoussGm so no like drinking alcohol like beer or whine just asking to know what i could use is vodka viable option?
Vodka... maybe. It will take longer to dry. At least 1 day. It shouldn't damage anything so you can try with vodka
Isopropyl alcohol from the dollar store or pharmacy is better.
@@YoussGm deos hydrogen peroxide work?
Do not use hydrogen peroxide. Its basically 97% water with the rest being h2o2 so no. It would be as if you're using water.
Edit: technically water/ hydrogen peroxide would work but I'd let it dry for at least a week to be safe. You also risk corrosion since it doesnt dry fast.
What if yyou use a 40% alcohool rubbing alcohool and you let it dry ?
40% alcohol would work just fine but I would let it dry overnight just in case, to let all the water evaporate. Also keep it somewhere warm like next to a heater but not so close that it melts.
@@YoussGm i did the most engineering thing ever xD
Dry in front of a fan lmao thanks it worked but sadly one button still messes up... idk whats wrong with it worked fine months ago.. but thanks
@@gaby232323 That's great, for the button that still doesn't work well, you can try to do the steps again but really push on the key and wiggle it from side to side while pushing.
this fixed my space bar. as you can see. however it took me two goes
Very cool! Hope it keeps working!
