How To Repair Computer Keyboard With Some Keys Not Working

  • It's pretty easy to fix a computer keyboard most of the time. Usually is just needs to be taken apart and cleaned. Several keys on my desktop computer keyboard weren't working very well. They wouldn't work unless I hit them harder. So I took the keyboard apart and cleaned it and got it working again. This keyboard is from my Compaq PC.
    YOU HAVE TO LET IT DRY COMPLETELY BEFORE YOU REASSEMBLE!!! IF THE KEYBOARD DOESN'T WORK AFTER DOING THIS, TRY IT AGAIN! AND LET IT DRY COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    for those who are still having trouble
    your key may not actually be broken or have dust in it, try using a cotton swab to realign the rubber silicon underneath the key. my r key was misaligned and when i put it back in place it fixed the issue.

    Early in my IT career, I shared an office with a hardware tech who was responsible for maintaining and repairing many hundreds of terminals. When a keyboard failed, he would swap in a working one. When he had saved up a load of nonfunctional keyboards, he would take them home and wash them in his dishwasher. After letting them dry for several days, he would bring them back and put them into the spares store as working replacements.

    This video was great. I had a couple keys that would nt work after spilling diet coke on my keyboard. Took the keyboard apart, cleaned everything, especially between the layers of plastic, and it works great. Its not really about the money as I had already bought another keyboard but about having the ability to fix it if needed. Thanks much.

  • @zonys

    In my keyboard, there are 3 sheets of plastics like on yours, but they are glued together all around the borders. Any idea on how to separate them? I tried a screw driver on a side that there was nothing printed, but I'm afraid it will remove the printed pattern. I was thinking about applying heat, but I don't know if it may deform the plastic. Thanks for any input!

    for anyone that tried to follow this video and ended up with a broken keyboard instead of fixing it, try and put the membrane contacts properly like on the top right of the keyboard on 2:58 (pause it) also don't forget to put the metal bit that keeps the contacts in place because that's the important part to making it work again

    • @brad8122
      @brad8122 2 роки тому +3

      That's right. Bad bad bad idea. At the top right you see a rubber on pressing onto the PCB. I wonder why they didn't solder this? Because it is not metal right? What material is used on those white paths? I measured a few hundred Ohms resistance along those lines even when a key is pressed. It seems really unusual to have a conductor also behave elastic.

    Clean the electronic leads on the little circuit board which has the three led lights sitting on the top right hand corner. If the leads have darkened due to dust, it will have a hard time picking up electronic signals from the circuit membrane. A pencil eraser is a nice thing to use and it worked like a charm for me.

    Thanks RJTheBikeGuy!! Your video helped me save my Keytronic "classic ll" keyboard, the culprit was a big 'dust bunny' on the foam black bar next to the small circuit board inside the keyboard. I suspect the 'dust bunny' was infringing on the connections needed for functional keys. After taking my board apart & cleaning it gently but thoroughly it works perfectly now, so thanks for your informative & helpful video. **Peace**

    noticed the major problem is likely moisture between the plastic sheets [3 on my machine], used barely moist alcohol cloth, no paper, let sit for couple of hours or use hair dryer with coolest setting at least 15" from sheets, if contact still doesn't work use a vinyl pencil eraser to lightly scrub the contact points {wipe with alcohol cloth again}, DO NOT TOUCH CONTACT POINTS WITH YOUR FINGERS. The rubber plastic sheet is to provide the return or push back up of the keys. It will provide some protection from liquids (don't count on it) and slightly more protection from dust particles. Routine vacuum cleaning from the top of keys will lengthen the frequency between internal contamination.

    I was lil bit skeptical as there are many people saying that after following the procedure their keyboard stopped working!
    My "B" key wasnt working at all... As I was about to buy a new keyboard, there was nothing to loose doing some experiment, right?
    I followed the video to open up my keyboard. Then instead of using any liquid, I just used a soft brush to clean off the dusts in between those two plastic layers. I saw a small dust grain attached on the "B" key spot at one of the two layers. Using my finger nail carefully removed the dust. Now the key board is fully functional again :D

    AH! My rubber dome matrix keyboard keeps repeatedly typing keys after I only press them once. I cleaned it thoroughly and wiped down the matrix but it still has the same problem. No keys are sticking and the matrix looks clean. Keytester tells me, say I press H, it will keep pressing H. Same with spacebar and all other keys. The matrix does not split into two pages like yours does, or maybe it is stuck? Should I try prying them apart? The keyboard is a Redragon Vajra s101 keyboard that came with a great Centrophorus backlight mouse. I don't understand what is wrong with it! (I'm on mobile right now.) It says plug and play on the manual, no drivers need to be updated so it must be a problem with the matrix or connecter nodes! Everyone is just telling me to buy a Mechanical keyboard instead but I just spent money on this thing...

    This is a great way to fix it, but if you rub off a line of the circuit anywhere, some keys will stop functioning. Also if you bend the plastic too sharp/too much and it leaves a mark, it might leave some keys to double-click or repeat itself. I have Steelseries Apex Raw and I have cleaned it and repaired the circuit many times, if you want a durable keyboard choose mechanical over membrane.

      what do mean by that? like if cut the circuit? because one of the lines on my keyboard has oxidized a tiny bit and I brushed it off. the line is still there. its just slightly less wide.

    I am still stuck on step one after playing around for about 45 minutes. How do you separate the bottom and the top cases? You made it look so easy. I found all my screws and removed them, but I am stumped how to get purchase between the top and bottom cases to pop those tabs out of place.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  3 роки тому +1

      They all come apart differently. Sounds like hidden snaps in there.

      Thanks for the words of encouragement. On my second attempt, I wedged expired credit cards between the top and bottom cases as I worried each of the sides free. Eight credit cards and three edges later, the keyboard's case made a satisfying pop sound and finally came apart. Thanks again.

    3:36 are those 2 plastic sheets supposed to be stuck together, or it's ok if it's separated?

    • @andrewplayz6022
      @andrewplayz6022 4 роки тому

      I think your not supposed to separate them because if you separate them you have to put them back exactly how the sheets were sticked together so if you wanna clean between the sheets don’t take them apart.

    Thanks...To my surprise this actually worked for me. The "O" and the "I" key would not work even after removing the caps and cleaning so l took off the bottom and found that rubber piece was folded at one end but didn't think this would be the problem for only 2 keys.I straightened the rubber piece and put it back together and tried it anyway and to my surprise all the keys actually worked

    Can anyone help me?
    I own a Logitech G510 Gaming Keyboard and a couple days ago, my Play/Pause, Stop and - (on num pad) stopped working all of a sudden and I am unsure as to what happened and I can't find any threads or articles about a similar issue.
    Will cleaning the contacts for the membranes inside the keyboard possibly fix this?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
