Left eye is a jack of all trades, t-boz has such a distinctive tone that was different for the time and Chilli was that perfect blend of r&b seduction mixed with her sweet soprano tone. They also were amazing dancers and danced differently from one another, but it was perfect

Crazy how 10 years later, Keke would be actually living out her portrayal of Chili's life. Messy relationship and babydaddy drama with that lightskin dude Darryl, really surprised me and once he put out those stupid comments about her being a "whole mother" i knew that was just the tip of the iceberg.
But back to the review, this was a great video Tyra. I wasn't a huge TLC fan growing up but i knew enough after watching the "biopic" and did my own research. I really loved watching there music videos growing up.

Chilli and T-Boz being the executive producers of the movie is more of a reason why the movie was lackluster. It’s too sensationalized. Of course they’re going to portray themselves in a good light or no be too hard on themselves. It’s like the Janet Jackson documentary: give the people a little something, don’t give them too much.
And you’re right, the movie should’ve been a series. The movie needed to touch more on their family background. We needed to see Lefteye’s upbringing with her abusive militant father, chilli’s upbringing with her absent father, etc.
They also didn’t go in depth with Left Eye’s relationship with Andre. They played it safe. It’s either you give us all of it or nothing at all. The biopic definitely needed a lot more.
Sidenote: Keke Palmer is a great actress but this wasn’t her best role. She didn’t embody the essence of Chilli and it’s because Keke doesn’t have sex appeal.

Great review! TLC hit the scene hard when they came out my senior yr of high school. I wore that cassette tape out.(Yeah I'm that old 😂) That Baby, Baby, Baby video had me excited about going to college. If anyone is wondering, they got their style of dress from Bell Biv Devoe. T Boz talked about it on the Mo'Nique talk show if I recall correctly. She said they wanted to be the female version of BBD since they had just come out with Poison. They immulated their baggy, spraypainted overalls w/ boots and carefree wild attitudes.

I do love this movie however, my biggest gripe with the movie is that I feel like they rushed through the CrazySexyCool album and completely speedran us through the Fanmail and 3D eras. I feel like so much more occurred behind the scenes during those albums. This really should’ve been a mini series for sure. Also, I wish they did the ending differently instead of having Keke and Drew do the epilogue, it’s should’ve been T-Boz and Chilli to wrap up the movie just to give the final scene more weight. Overall, I give it a solid 8. Don’t care if I’m being a little bias because TLC IS my favorite girl group of all time 😅
Last thing: I remember when people were roasting this movie before it was even released when they revealed Lil Mama I was even a little skeptical, but I swear there were parts of the movie where I was like “This is literally Left Eye!” From the inflections of her voice, the mannerisms, everything. She ate this role up!!!

The biopic of TLC was enjoyable, but a mini-series with more background information and a deeper exploration of their lives, career, and post-Left-Eye’s death should have been the movie itself. It seems like when you watch a person’s documentary about their lives, it has more detail and depth than the biopic.

Lil Mama was perfect as Lisa tbh! It kinda sucks how after this biopic came out, T-Boz and Chili were in talk with Lil Mama to get together as like a TLC 2.0 but they ended up dropping it because they thought Lil Mama was "too much" or something like that. (It's mentioned in that Empressive video about Lil Mama and it's been awhile since I saw it so I don't remember exactly what their reasoning for it was.) I feel like back then and even now, Lil Mama kinda gets a lot of shade for embarrassing stuff she did in her past (The "Empire State of Mind" fiasco) and people thinking she's cringe and I don't think she deserves it. In hindsight though, I'm kinda glad the TLC 2.0 thing never went through-- and I know it was a bit of a thing for awhile because, mind you I don't remember if this biopic came first or after, but there was that short-lived reality competition show on a decade ago which was about T-Boz and Chili trying to find a new third member to revive TLC, and I vaguely remember T-Boz, Chili, and some of the finalists from the show performing a medley of TLC songs for some music awards show because I have this image clear as day in my mind of T-Boz, Chili, and a handful of girls doing the "Waterfalls" choreo at the show... but I'm glad it never stuck because I don't think any TLC fan would have really accepted this updated version of the group because, well, you just can't replace Lisa. She's one of a kind, and if the version of TLC with Lil Mama really had come to fruition, a lot of fans would be pissed because it becomes THAT much more obvious that they're trying to fill Lisa's place by having the person who was cast as Lisa in the biopic because of how much she looks like Lis join the group; And it DEFINITELY would have earned Lil Mama way more hate, because for anyone who is a TLC fan but didn't see Crazy Sexy Cool, or know how Lil Mama is, would have been giving her the stink-eye like 'Who's this bitch trying to take Lisa's place???"
Honestly for me, the only time Keke's acting really seemed like she was pulling it off, was the scene where she as Chili learns about Lisa's passing... and even then, the overacting you mention that she tends to do (which, I love Keke and thinks she's a fantastic actress-- but I can concede that she does sometimes go hard with her acting and emoting) works because it's a pretty normal reaction of shock, anger, confusion, and sadness, to learn that someone who was not just a best friend but whom you considered a sister that you probably just spoke to the other day or earlier that day, is now suddenly dead. And I feel so bad saying that, because I don't want to seem like I'm shitting on Keke because it's not my intention... but it is how I feel. so I would say the best way I can reconcile it is that, because it IS a made for TV biopic, I can give the overacting and other shortcomings a bit of a pass because of it being a TV movie. It's better than that Michael Jackson made for TV biopic, it's better than the Aaliyah made for TV biopic, it's DEFINITELY better than that Brittany Murphy biopic (they didn't even TRY to find someone who even resembled Murphy just a tiny bit for that movie!)... but it's clearing a low bar which isn't saying much.
I will say my favorite part of the biopic when I first saw it was definitely the recreations of the music videos and their iconic outfits! That really made me feel like I was 13 again, singing along with "No Scrubs", "Waterfalls", 'Unpretty"... it sent me BACK!! I still remember the first time I saw the "No Scrubs" video and thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen at that point with how futuristic it was and how gorgeous the girls looked! And I thought it was so cool how Lisa learned ASL so she could sign the lyrics for the "Unpretty" music video because it wasn't anything anyone had ever seen or done in 1999 - let alone 2023! Oh and the "Waterfalls" video?? UGH!! Absolutely beautiful and STILL utterly heartbreaking to this very day! "Creep" even if it was written by Dallas Austin is SUCH A GOOD SONG and the girls looked soooooo good in those satin pajamas they wore in the music video!! "Diggin' On You" still holds up as a bop and the groove really embodies the "sexy" and "cool" of CrazySexyCool alongside "Creep" IMHO! And "Red Light Special" is a fantastic deep cut! I know it's got fans, but I kinda feel like it's underrated because, when you think of TLC, the first thing most people think of is "Waterfalls", "No Scrubs", "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" if you're an older TLC fan, then "Creep", the "All That" theme song for the people like me who remember that Nickelodeon tapped TLC to write and sing the theme song for All That (or SNL for kids)-- and if I'm remembering correctly, TLC was also their first music guest on the show! Then "Unpretty", and maaaaaybe "Diggin' On You"... but I kinda feel like "Red Light Special" is slept on by many people, especially the casual TLC fans! You really can't go wrong with TLC's discography!
Also, you're definitely on to something when you mentioned that parts of the biopic felt like they were taken straight from TLC's Behind The Music episode... because VH1 produced the CrazySexyCool biopic and aired it on their channel, and VH1's biggest show before all the reality tv garbage they started airing in the early 2000s WAS Behind The Music! I am 100% convinced that VH1 likely did use some of their TLC Behind The Music footage and added it into the biopic to cut some corners seeing as how they own the rights to it!
Anyway, this was a great review Tyra! I always enjoy your commentary and your singing! ❣

Correct me if I'm wrong but left eye didn't want to sing on creep because she didn't like the message behind the song. If you look at any live performances she doesn't sing just dance. I think she wasn't heard that much on the 2nd album because her time was limited because she was in that facility but it definitely looks like they was ignoring her creative vision. I'm just happy they had a chance to do that with Fanmail before she passed 😢

That's how I thought about this movie when I made my posts on writing/video form on my Instagram, the movie felt like it was going fast with the pacing and I loved the performance from Lil Mama as Left Eye because it was so spot on and amazing. I change up my music tastes every once in a while and I do love Tool, Ultraspank (underrated band), Static-X,
Deftones, Metallica (A little bit), AC/DC (my nephews love that band), Rammstein (My oldest nephew Russell loves that band), Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory and Meteora), and of course Slipknot but I don't mind going outside the box with groups
like TLC. I remember that song Waterfalls as a kid in the '90s it was one of my childhood songs that I still love to this
day, and I can't believe that the real Chilli still looks great in her '50s. Her, Janet, and Angela Bassett must've found
that fountain of youth. Great job with the review and Merry Christmas. 😁

How this story was materialized in a movie is similar to how The Temptations were materialized into a movie. The surviving members of both groups had unresolved issues and emotions towards the ones who have passed on and it shows by how they allowed things and people to be portrayed. The Temptations is a great biopic but there were things fabricated, exaggerated, and covered up because of Otis’ true feelings towards each member. Whether good or bad and I can say the same about TLC. Before Left Eye passed, they were not on the best of terms at all. They mourned her as friend and sister to them but they also feel righteous in every decision, mindset, and etc leading up to her death. I grew up identifying with Left Eye because me and my sisters agreed who we would be. With that being said, I love Left Eye and I wished I could be able live in the world when she was. Even if I never got to meet her
SN: it’s so bizarre how much I can relate to Left Eye and her story at this point in my life. A lot of her is similar to a lot of me. I see a lot of me especially now in her

Thank You for the Review. We all love TLC. Lisa was definitely my favorite. I have her tattoo on my left arm. Mine says 88. She had Andre football number. Miss You Lisa so Talented never Forgotten. Their song how it works was on Waiting to exhale soundtrack good listen.

Amazing video ❤ chilli was always my fav. Tlc is my favorite group because each member played a significant role and they all were so different while being able to match each others fly. The biopic was one of vh1’s better movies however I always hated how they rushed through fanmail and said forget the 3d era as a whole. I feel like in the movie it was more left eye centered because of her untimely passing and then trying to bridge the story around that. I think if it was structured as a mini series it would have been more in depth with each member and not so much just sickle cell, Dallas and Honduras.

Biopics often scare me😅. That Biggie one hell no😂. I accidentally saw it on TV. N.W.A. May be watched it two times to get Dre twisted alter ego right😂. A younger homie at the gym once recommended it to me and told him all the flaws. He was so irritated and confused😂😂😂
