This was a review/concert. I've always felt like this movie never got the credit it deserved. It's an excellent film in my opinion. At the time I thought this movie was going to lead to Chris Tucker becoming a serious actor. I thought his performance as Skip was great. He still was funny but he was more than just funny. All the actors did a great job. Am I crazy to think the movie could have had some Oscar nominations? Am I crazy to say I enjoyed this movie about as much as I enjoyed Goodfellas?
Can't say enough about this movie. One of the greatest and perhaps underappreciated films of all time. The first time I saw this was 20+ years ago as a Private E2 stationed in South Korea as I watched this movie in the barracks with two fellow soldiers in my same unit. We couldn't help but be moved by this film and how hard hitting it was. The actors in the film are of my same generation, and an interesting aspect about this film as we watched it back then is that we were only one generation removed from the Vietnam era. As the son of a Vietnam era veteran, this movie brought a reality and another dimension to the harshness and exploitation of war. Being in early adulthood, I think I was a little more ambivalent about the government and our role as service members in relation to the vulnerability of being a lowly recruit. After a year in South Korea, I was sent back to the states and with the bizarre environment ensuing on Ft. Hood in the aftermath of 9/11, for me the writing was on the wall. I had my fill of the Army and as soon as my initial enlistment was coming to a close I did not reenlist. Watching the movie more than a few times since then and in recent years, this movie still hits hard if not much more and gets me thinking so much about life in general. I absolutely agree with Struggle when stating that this movie has many layers, which it indeed does and makes it so relatable (even if you've never been to war or served in the military). Definitely a five star movie and it's beyond me how this movie never received the accolades it deserves. Few if any movies I've ever seen can compare to the intensity that permeates this film. Thank you so much for reviewing this movie and doing so with such detail and zeal.

My father was a Vietnam War Veteran back in the late 60's/70's and was exposed to Agent Orange which unfortunately led to congestive heart failure in which he was able to live 25 plus year until his unfortunately passing four years ago after a three year battle with vascular dementia. Both illnesses linked back to his exposure to Agent Orange during his 15 month tour in Vietnam. I did a re watch of this film in a long time and watching this as if it was a first time watch i see how the Hughes created an American classic. Its a full saga of a story and it is along the lines of Once Upon a Time in America and Goodfellas telling an epic story where nowadays we see films that tell a certain time the characters are a part of. Here is a good portion. We are really missing that with storytelling in movies today. Instead of giving us the entire book, we are getting 1-4 chapters. Might i say, the blood and gore practical effects were on point here. Now where we get either vfx blood or minimal squib work, it was so great seeing outrageous practical work. All in all to say, we have to really hold this film high amongst the works of Scorcese and Spike Lee as an American classic
