As the 14th edition of Aero India 2023 takes place at Yelahanka airbase in Bengaluru, US F-35 debut there flags the turn in military & strategic relations between India & US. ThePrint Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains what this fundamental shift is & how it is marked by the fact that all three Indian Forces - Army, Navy & Air Force are using lethal American weapons for the first time in history. Episode 1174 of ‘Cut the Clutter’.
11:21 - 11:37 : Visuals shown are LCH Prachand not Apache AH-64E . Error is regretted

Just like how Japan, Germany, Skorea, Singapore, Taiwan progress rapidly after working with US, India will develop rapidly working with US. following russia was a major disastor. russia betrayed us when they didn't help India stop china from invading us. We will never forget the betrayal. Seems like russia is only interested in using us as a useful pawn against US.
@@RushiaKhan your name say it all
I have seen the F-35 upclose, the capability of that aircraft is impressive. However, operation costs could be an issue for most countries.
This is not the age of fighter jets: NaMo.
It won't be that high as you'd be tied in with the American logistics train which vastly reduces the cost and upkeep price tag.

Very well researched and put across!! Yes. There has been a paradigm shift in our strategic leanings. Lethal platforms for our Forces are now coming from the US & France in addition to Russia. The present posture reflects an effort to get us the best equipment from the best bidder and an effort not to keep all eggs in a single basket. I feel maintaining this posture is critical to ensuring that we do not fall again into the trap of overwhelmingly dependent on one country for our needs. Acquiring self sufficiency is, of course the key, which needs to be balanced with our need to maintain operational readiness along the Northern and Western fronts. A robust economic trajectory over the next decade holds the key for these aspirations and that is where we need to focus for now.
Thank you for this episode sir. I still remember the early to mid-2000s when Russia was seen as our natural ally and the US was seen with suspicion, if not outright hostility by us, the common people. I remember listening to scenarios where it used to the US and Pak vs India and Russia. This attitude has still not changed completely, but it has changed somewhat.
While I appreciate your CTC series a great deal and am a daily viewer, I would love something which deals directly with the issue of the day. I would like a series of the type "Fact vs Fiction" where the Print team would take up some factual statements made by various political parties that day on the opposing sides of an issue and tell us, the viewers, how true or fictional they were. For example, central agencies raided BBC's office today. Then, we had two people dying in a fire while bulldozers were demolishing their homes in UP. The governor issue or the Adani issue. Random statements are issued all the time by either side, some of which contradict each other directly (even on live television). But, no media group fact checks them and informs us which side is factually correct. If such a series becomes popular and mainstream enough, it might even get adopted by other media outlets and make our parties more honest.
Please think about this.
America is full of wonderful people that came from India to make America their country. So in a way we are stuck with each because this makes us family.
For sure we are a flawed people. We easily admit that and damn sure don't know what to do about a lot of our problems. With that said I got to ask, do many people move from India to Pakistan Russia or China. Please give my best to your family from ours 👍🇺🇸🤠

0) For the US government, there is a huge difference between the life of a skilled Indian who is living in the US and contributing to the US economy, and another Indian living in India who has nothing to do with the US.
1) Like most other countries, USA is full of rational people who believe in respecting people of all backgrounds. In addition, thanks to the immense financial strength, USA and the other western countries have a robust law and order situation which gives some sort of protection to the immigrants from the nutcases.
2) The suspicion in India is not about the common Americans like you, it's the government that has, in the past taken positions that are unethical and contrary to thier "principles". Take the example of the 1971 Bengali Genocide followed by the 1971 war, where the western world (mainly the US) supported a military dictatorship that was carrying out excesses on the Bengalis, while taking on a democracy that was trying to stop the genocide. At the very least, the US could have stayed neutral. But since they didn't, India had to seek help from the USSR.
Anyway, we have moved on a long way since then and there are no hard feelings, but history is history.
3) There are quite a few nutcases in India, but most of us acknowledge the importance of nations like USA, France, etc in the growth of developing nations.
4) Like I said in the prev point, the perception is not about US the country, or the people from the US, it's US the state and some of the US media houses that sometimes peddle misinformation.
By the way, strangely enough, there are quite a few Donald Trump fans in India (trust me) 😀
@@tuckhorse I get what you are saying. But, I don't fully agree. Sure, ties between India and the US are stronger because a lot of Indians immigrate to the US for jobs and eventually settle there. On the other hand, as you mentioned, Indians do not move to Russia, China or Pakistan. But, WHY do a lot of Indians immigrate to the US? Yes, the fact that the US is a "land of opportunity" and a very strong democracy with individual freedom and capitalism as core philosophies has a lot to do with it. But, IMO, a very important factor that might not be evident at first is - the English language. There are a lot of democracies in the world - France, Germany, Japan, South Korea etc. But, which countries do the Indians prefer? The US, Canada, Australia, and the UK. Why? Because language is not a barrier. For the countries you mentioned, Russia (speaks Russian, is too cold, is not really democratic or capitalist), China (speaks Chinese, is communist/autocratic and is almost an enemy) and Pakistan (failed democracy > autocracy/military dictatorship, failed economy, Islamic and a confirmed enemy).
So, the positive that you mentioned wrt the US applies along with the ones that I mentioned (language, democracy, freedom and liberty). But, not to sound rude, there are a few issues wrt the US too - declining superpower, morally bankrupt, hypocritical nature, creating first world problems (like the whole gender thing), unable/unwilling to part with guns, lack of good leaders (Trump, Biden, Hillary), loves wars. I am not including racism, as we Indians take the cake there (IMO).
I don't really know the point I am trying to make above, but these are just some random thoughts that I wanted to share.

Informative video by Shekhar on the history of Indo US military purchases. Of course, henceforth India will have more deals from US but not as many for the finished products as for specific critical parts of the Atmanirbhar India designed systems, joint development of new technologies, co-production etc. That is the way to go for Indo US cooperation in defense. To be specific, F35 is not on our shopping list, however wonderful that aircraft is!!

I love how while talking about Apache, the b-roll actually shows Prachand helicopters. Just goes to show how close our technology has come to the Americans
That’s why it looked so similar. No wonder I thought i have forgotten how prachand looks.
use apache & see what kind of feature they r using & incorporate those feature in the next version of prachand. Ofcourse rreverse engineering is not part of a deal but still iindian scientist will gett pretty good idea about it's software but iindia needs research in metalurgy...
Prachand is actually better than the Apache in some aspects like high altitude performance. The reason Indian equipment doesn't have the best reputation with the Indian military or in the West is not because of failures of design, the designs are often brilliant, cutting edge, and technically risky. Its because of failures of production.

Professor, you forgot to mention that the Soviet Union and now Russia have passed to India, and continue to do so, a lot of critical military technology that no other country would ever do. So, it's not only about who sells more weapons to India.
That goes without saying. The essence of this report is that, Pakistan has fought India using US weapons and continues to do so. The new Indian acquisition of US hardware is a game changer
True, but the West also now sells many weapons to India, while at the same time Russia today offers most advanced arms to PRC too.
As far as I know Sig Sauer is a Switzerland company not American. I read a story many years ago that IBM was prevented from selling computers and software to India so India was forced to train and educate its people and forced to become self-sufficient in many high tech areas.
The company split. Sig Sauer Inc. is exclusively made in America and is an American company.
Fantastic episode. Thanks Shekarji

Salute #Modi #2047
As far as I remember, the major sticking point was always production facilities. Whether it was for aircraft or even steel plants. The significant turning point was Kruschev's offer of his latest front-line interceptor fighter, the MIG-21 with manufacturing facilities, provided Nehru fired Kurt Tank, who had designed the HF24 in India. Nehru accepted because it had become obvious that although the HF24 was excellently designed, Rolls Royce of Britain suddenly demanded unaffordable prices for the under- development engine around which it was designed, thereby dooming it to underperformance. Even the Gnat was bought by India off the drawing board with the intention of making it in India from the west around the same time.
Excellent analysis

The ad of this fac use to regularly figure in the Scientific American magazine my dad subscribed for 30+ years in Mumbai. It had the original red and white livery.
Many years later when I went to the US myself and visited the Dayton Ohio AC museum, I sat in the cockpit of this aircraft and took a photo. They have kept the aircraft on display and you can sit in that ridiculously cramped cockpit.

Some of the pictures shared as Apache helicopters are actually the indigenous LCH, a.k.a. Prachand. This is a testament to how far the Indian Helicopter programme has come over the years. It's completely waste of money to acquire weapons from USA, because they are so expensive, those choppers cost more than 200 to 300 millions dollars each.
India should invest money in their education and research of developing these weapons and defense equipment.
there is no special educational degrees for studies like, weapons development, research on developing to defense systems to IITs or top engineering colleges, make them competitive.
most engineers and scientists work at DRDO, DRDL, BD etc etc, just normal engineering students with general knowledge, not combination of engineering subjects, or subjects that integrate multiple engineering fields.
most guys don't know how mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer science engineering are combined are work.
If india invest heavily in research and funding to institutions with specific targets, these things are very well achievable.
Regarding the U.S. only selling F-35 to NATO allies. Finland bought 64 F-35 A2 fighters before it applied to join NATO. South Korea also has F-35s and Japan has purchased about 150 F-35s and Australia purchased 72 F-35s, and though these three are all treaty allies of the U.S., none of them are in NATO.
Good information and analysis 👍

This episode is showcasing the incompetence of Indian Policymakers than anything of appreciation about them.
Imagine for a country & Defense market like India which fought many wars, is still a client state & can't produce anything valuable of its own.
The newspapers in 1950s & 2023 publish the same news, Indian Govt signs deal with France, Russia or US to buy this & that!
We in India likes to boast about our army's scale & mass, but how much material strength do they have? How much can India's industry back them? If only our babus had the vision for ToT or manufacturing in India about these purchases in 1950s! Even worse is that the Air India deal which is boasted as an achievement is Assembled in US & France not in India. So much for a historic deal that Vishwaguru didn't even had the strength to Bargain for a Assembly line in Gujarati? Or maybe a co - develp of an engine with Rolls Royce, GE or Saffron?
But then again who's going to be their partners in India right! DRDO which works on Army tents & Biriyani to eat in cold climates to high precision material science in Kaveri engine is the "works for all" corporate in India, are they really that good for everything organization? ! Unless we pump up our private industries our nation will remain as a client state when it comes to defense equipment.

The distrust with Americans still prevail as Navy did not approve F/A 18 super hornet as ceitical tech releted to RWR was not offered to India. India was also not offered the latest AIM 260 BVR missiles and AGM100 bombs along with host of other sensor suites. US once again offered the entry level trim or as SG said the economy version of F/A18 Super hornet. Indian Navy approved Rafele Marine instead.
Rafale M made more sense anyway. It just the way it is with US . Unless countries are part of their treaty alliances ,especially close allies UK, France,Japan, South Korea, Aus etc they wont sell you best stuff.

So far US had denied sale of F35 to any country that has S400 air defense system. India is a major user of S400.
India 🇮🇳 has special status. The Congress is already authorized selling to India.
Keeping in mind the challenges from china all the time it is strategically discreet of indian defense think tanks to have good relation with both Russia, who is a all time friend and USA, and other powerful countries, as they want to help india and to be helped as well.

From everything I've read, the F-20 had a lot of advantages over the F-16 that really would have worked well for nations with limited resources. The problem was that without the USAF adopting it, there would be no updates, and the availability of spares and would be questionable.

For those of you who do not regularly watch the military channels, the latest versions of such equipment as fighter aircraft, missiles, artillery, ships and tanks is a constant struggle to see who can come up with the best of the newer and better stuff. But, I can assure you that having American made lethal versions will keep you at the front of the battleline. And considering that you are in a rough neighborhood (China, Russia, Pakistan), you deserve to have the very best when it comes to your own defense. Good Luck!

Oh poor Shekhar.

Imo purchasing an American aircraft will prove to be costly for India in the long run. As such, I think it'll be better for us to just purchase drones (surveillance/UCAVs) and other things like ARs and all but not aircrafts, specifically fighter jets like the F-35 Lightning. The operational cost of that aircraft is absolutely mind boggling. Also, I feel that French or Israeli technology is really beneficial for the Indian Armed Forces. It's good that we're diversifying our sources and not just depending on one partner, that is, Russia. Simultaneously, it's equally important for us to get on with our own fighter jet programs like the Tejas Mk2, TEDBF and AMCA(which is finally now in analysing stage). I was really glad to see that more than 800 companies that exhibited their products in Aero India 2023 were Indian companies (public/private)

But the ist flight of amca, tedf and a indigenous jet engine surely will
Getting the f35 would be a diplomatic coup for India
Not just the airspace , it could change indo-us relations for the next 30+ years.
Not needed, US equipment comes with a lot of unnecessary baggage and lectures on how and when to use the weapons we bought with our own money and we will be dictated by the US on when and where we should be using them.
It would be useless .. since they will not give technology transfer for it ... make us like Pakistan, but from USA, then keep dealing with them for each spare part and missiles
