I have a “crap” e-bike and I love it, thousands of miles on it already. I just need to zoom down pavement and stop well enough, I don’t need advanced systems costing thousands, it’s unnecessary.
Which one?
I think torque sensors will replace cadence on most bikes.
Eh. That's pretty expensive for absolutely zero benefit.
Your history in this industry and insights are wonderful. You have taught your community a great deal and look forward to seeing whatever you are inspired to talk about. My family e-cargo bike is one of the best purchases I have made :)
I'm 68 and got the blue Hyper Ebike from Walmart last year for $398. It's been holding up quite well so far. I usually go out riding for around two hours and only use the pedal assist on hills. It's fast enough for me. The problem I see with the trikes, is there's no room in a bike lane to get by one.
Thank you for doing these videos. I am a huge bike person. From 10 speeds to Banana Seat Bikes to Mountain bikes and now I want to learn what might be best for my future.. Great stuff.
I just discovered this channel and I'm thinking about purchasing an EBike this year. I'm over 60 but still in pretty good shape. I grew up in Florida which was pretty flat until I moved to Tallahassee for college at Florida State. I've lived in Atlanta since the end of 1995 so I'm looking to buy something with a low bar for easy step through and good hill assist. It would also need to be something with cargo capability for short trips the grocery store and compact enough to work well in a city environment. Finally, I'd like to have some sort of ride dampening so the my arms and back aren't pounded over each bump because Atlanta's roads are wretched. If you have a favorite that has all or most of those features, please pass on the recommendation.
I have heard good things about this company A friend i trust has a lot of miles on one--Heybike their new 2023 stuff looks really interesting
I think disposal and recycling will be a topic not addressed this year but when there is a crisis of some sort unfortunately.
The answer is to have a core charge like lead acid batteries that people can get back when they recycle lithium batteries.
Shopping for my first e-bike. Thank you for all the info. Just found your channel but , I’ve been going back through the older post which are still relevant and very helpful. Thanks again.
Hope to see better batteries to go more mile's per charge.
I want to see more affordable belt drive/internal hub ebikes. It's so much more convenient and less messy than a derailleur. It's a must for me for commuter bikes.
Very insightful and fun content. My prediction will be improved security with things like built-in alarms and trackers. On a related note, I hope we see some redesign of lock tech so that we aren't stuck with having to use 2 locks in order to "Properly" lock an ebike.
I bought the Evelo Compass Trike 500-watt motor huge basket for groceries and drive it all around town effortlessly. At 68 years old it’s perfect for me. But I hope a lot more security issues are solved in the future of E bikes
Thumbs up for reviewing the predictions from last year!
Thanks, Great stuff, looking forward to the next!!
I think we might see a larger move to mid-drive ebikes along with a slight drop in price.
As far as U.S market is concern, it became obvious that U.S, market surprisingly cares more about e-bike volume for entertainment rather than city commuting like Europe and China.
Thank you for your perspective. I'm new to Ebikes (Just a few months) and enjoy learning
I am a new owner of an Ecargo bike. It is fantastic. I don’t have any predictions but I would like to see the industry bring on more smart transmissions.
Would love to see a standardized range metric, like the EPA has for cars. Would be awesome to have a realistic distance for the highest and lowest power settings
Yeah because the auto manufacturers do such a great job with providing realistic numbers. 😂
Agreed. I know when I get on my e-cargo wagon I make up 65% of the gross weight and when I get in my car I represent about 5.6% of the total gross weight. I think this variable alone will make the metric difficult to realize, but they could establish it based on rider weight classes I suppose.
@@fivespeed3026 They at least aren't off by 10x. At 55mph, you can generally get the EPA range.
@@thomasreese2816 I've never seen range estimates that were 10x higher than reality. That would be some pretty bold advertising. It's easy enough to get a reasonable estimate, just take the capacity of the battery pack (ex: 36v x 10ah = 360wh) and divide by 20wh per mile for a best case scenario (18mi) or 60wh per mile for a worst case scenario (6mi).
20wh = light rider, pedal assist, good weather on flat land, brand new 350w bike.
60wh = heavy rider, no pedaling and full throttle, hills, very hot or cold, 3 year old 1000w bike.
The "average" is probably about 35wh per mile.
These wh/mile estimates might sound a bit high compared to what people report online, but that's to account for the fact that a battery pack will never be at 100% capacity nor be able to be discharged to 0% and a few other variables.
I think the best we can hope for is for better clarification of the range, meaning that ebike companies start doing throttle only and lowest PAS setting numbers. Honestly, tho, it can be difficult for ebike companies to put accurate range figures out when a significant factor of that number is the weight of the rider. I guess they're going to have to say something like "20 miles on throttle only, up to 60 miles on lowest PAS setting" and then put an */footnote about those numbers are from a 150-lb rider.
Dude where have you been all my life you're so informative thanks for all the information
I appreciate your predictions and look forward to the day that others see the importance of more bikes and less cars.
Good predictions, like last year. I have a few possible additions. I predict more box store ebikes. Costco, Walmart type ebikes. I think we will see more eScooters.
Mostly I think there will be industry wide refinements like better, smaller motors, better software maybe. Battery tech will make small improvements and just more ebikes in general.
Great demonstration of the lectric trike, I didn’t know they would make one but it’s good for delivering
Hey Micah! IMHO, I think security add-ons & built-ins will be a hot item. Immobilizers and motion/movement locking devices will probably become more mainstream, especially configured by the OEM. Visibility will also be a key point, with more people biking on public roads, so bright patterns/colors as well as built-in LED frame lighting will become more popular. I also envision more e-things, as people realize the viability of combining solar collection with on- and off-board battery storage and a powered bike platform that does not require a license to operate. Small-group caravans may start exploring the national forests and edutaining people on alternative transportation beyond the traditional home->work->home routine. Larger motors/batteries/wheels as well as powered trailers will also be a big hit. Thanks for your reviews! They are very enlightening! Ride Hard! Ride Safe! And dont forget to put some protection on your gourd, when riding, as it can so easily when gravity takes over. ;) (***Member of the Over the Bars Club***)
I sure hope that you are correct!
Security is a good point! These unregistered/unlicensed lightweight ebikes are very tempting targets for thieves. Visibility/Safety vests, Lights are imperative! I swerved my car yesterday to avoid an oncoming bike riding the curb on my side of the street...
Signed, Newbie. Last Dec is first bike riding in 55 years...
@ZZZCHB2 Consider the option of traveling light, guard dog aboard trailer outfitted with solar collection and power distribution ability. Charge your ride anytime you are stationary via the selfpowered trailer. Small DC fridge/freezer like BougeRV or Homedic or such, and a travel stove, such as from Biolite with its own power harnessing tech, small LED array for lighting, motion-detection CCTV camera w/LED & infrared detection, to help secure your kit When stationary/overnighting. The options are only limited by the imagination. ;)
Very informative!
And please give us more info! Well done!
Please make a video about how a bike battery can catch fire when it's not punctured and wet, and also wired and fused properly. Show that there needs to be carelessness and neglect involved when it comes to bike battery fires, otherwise they're safe as houses.
I started out thinking Lectric, then George, but ended up with a Heybike Cityrun. I am impressed with their customer service. Have had a few questions answered quickly and am happy with them and the bike. I’m considering getting another bike (a folding one) and if I do, it will probably be a Heybike. No connection to them…
I'd expect to see more smart functionality added to ebikes like more cell phone smart app connectivity. I'd like to see more Right To Repair thought put into ebikes, much less proprietary parts and hardware that you have to ONLY get through the OEM. Like standardized connections.. the only standardized cable on most ebikes is the charger that plugs into your wall outlet. It seems that most manufacturers are going the opposite route with this lately.
I completely agree with you. We NEED the right to repair as well as standardized parts such as standardized cables and connections.
Another informative video, thank you.
Nice to see the ebike market growing!
I think we might see less emphasis on gear trains. You don't need 21 speeds on an ebike for street use.
Five would be adequate when you can call on the motor for climbing.
I do far less shifting on my ebike.
Nice points of views, thanks for sharing.
Heads Up - Lenkalese 740 is 2000 Watts, 48 Volt, 20 Amp, eBay for.£1500
I think a lot of companies might desire to produce e-bikes with bigger batteries but are limited by supply chain shortages, still, in 2023. Mind-blowing, but I think it's still an issue that companies even beyond e-bikes are dealing with too.
Big fan of biking myself , keep doing great videos , just bought rad city 4 ... a little heavy.... :)
I`m going to look at all your cataloger of videos to see start from the beginning and start to understand these bikes and I`m thinking about what to use around the property for pulling, carrying things. Lots to catch up on. Thanks again.
Thanks for your thoughts on what to look for. I'll probably be in the market for an E-Trike for my elderly sister. One that doesn't go over 10-15 mph.
I think there will be more Scrambler style ebikes and the lines getting even more blurry between ebikes, mopeds and motor cycles. I'm hoping we don't end up in with more restrictive legislation and enforcement by officer Dibble.
Cargo is where it is at for me. I am just waiting for the "right" bike to come out. Making do with my old "converted" MTB for my grocery runs. (Big basket up front and two ADK Packworks BPS10 off my rear rack).
Cargo bikes and trikes are definitely interesting. We're certainly seeing a lot of them coming on the market recently, although I'm not sure if I'd go that route myself. I have an ebike with fat tires and lots of range and good hill climbing capabilities (I need that where I live) that I use for shopping trips, commuting, banging around on rural roads, and even some trail riding. But that's me...
I'd like to see more bikes with bigger batteries in 2023 (yes, that was your prediction last year, I know) but I suspect they will remain the province of smaller makers, since they add to the cost (and weight) and most people seem content with what larger makers are offering.
Along with this is a wish to see some standardization of battery technology (including the UL rating you mentioned). One thing that concerns me is that each maker designs their pack to fit their frame set-up and fashions their own proprietary connector. I worry about what this means for the longevity of my bike, if (when) the battery needs replacing in the future.
I second the comments that hope for more bikes with torque sensors; they really improve how the bike works over cadence sensors.
Will be watching your video later on today but had to comment once I saw the title of your video. The biggest problem experienced with these e-bikes flooding the market is the original battery pack taking a dump. You see replacement batteries are hard to come by and folks don't want to repair them due to the liability associated with such an endeavor. There are a couple of companies I found that would but the shipping costs (batteries on board sticker) are crazy expensive not to mention the replacement battery itself. Folks won't see this dilemma when they first buy their e-bikes but will quickly find themselves in the "old e-bike in the garage collecting dust" syndrome.
Your videos on small electric vehicles are great
I have had excellent riding my NCM Moscow, now updated as the 'M3". Happy with the product enough to have bought a second. 48v 500watt rear hub mountain bike style. 100km range on a new battery, with peddling....always peddling...it's a bike!! $1500 canadian dollars, best money I have spent in a long long time. Pound for pound, best value around where I am. 7600km since June 2021.
Name brand brakes, shifter, shocks etc so no issue with maintenance. So far just tires and brake pads, would highly recommend.
I would like to see introduced a way to "lock out" the controller on the bike with a key. Right now all someone has to do is press a bottom to activate the controller and off you go. Most people will not go the trouble of removing the battery if leaving the bike while you grab some lunch locks are good, but they are heavy to drag around. Never leave your ebike unattended. It is too easy to steal, Adding an Airtag can help but then you are trying to find your bike after it has been taken.
Good to see a broader perspective.
I think there are going to be even more motorbike/motorcycle/cafe racer style e-bikes put out by more companies. These are fetching higher end prices from Sur Ron and Super 73 (which is ridiculously overpriced now), but also manufacturers like Juiced Bikes, Ariel Rider, Spark Cycle Works, etc. The only real difference with most of these moped style bikes is the frame and maybe (not always) the suspension, and then they're just otherwise using regular e-bike components.
I would also like to see e-bikes, specifically like the ones mentioned above, have more serious tires. These are heavy bikes operating at moderately fast speeds -- they really need more of a moped/motorcycle tire (like a Michelin City Pro/Extra or a very common OEM moped tire, IRC NR53). I put the Michelin City Pro tires on my Rad Power Bikes RadWagon 4 and LOVED them. Zero worries about flats from such ridiculously minor objects like shattered glass/plastic, thorns, sharp gravel, etc., and the ride was great.
I wish ebike companies would start adding built-in locks on all the bikes. Like a simple fork/frame mounted bolt lock through front and/or rear wheels. Most ebikes are getting REALLY heavy these days, and if you make them that much more difficult to roll away after quickly doing away with whatever aftermarket tethering lock you're using, it would be a big help. No one is getting far carrying a 100-120lb bike.
I enjoy all your videos. Good job. Yes, I'm kissing up to get a book...
Great video as always ... Does gates make a conversion kit that is compatible with a bafang BBSO2... I converted a GT mountain bike some years ago and found that the motor is pretty hard on the existing cassette and derailleur... and would like to try a belt even if I have to go to a welding shop to modify a frame...
With declining parts prices and shipping costs to the west coast, some ebike companies are introducing upgraded bikes like Aventon Level 2 and their Adventure 2 bikes and lower prices as costs come down. This may be temporary.
Thanks for showing me the future 🎉
I think we'll be seeing a lot more bike friendly areas, more bike lanes, bike racks. Maybe we will even start to see ebike charging stations. :)
My Major Bomber Supertastic Aswesmest Prime Prediction is...
Market shifting towards upright dutch style riding positions.
I thought the moped-style e-bikes are going to be popular since pedaling might not be as essential for some e-bikers. However, after Segway eMoped C80, there are no new eMoped coming to the US market. The growth is huge in East Europe and India.
Not a bike if one does not pedal. Not sure why a person wouldn't pedal. Get some where AND get some exercise. I have ebiked nearly 5000 miles since mid 2021, and I have peddled the whole way. I love to ride. If I din't feel like peddling I would ride my motorcycle
I love the single speed bikes , but most people cannot ride them as they are not in good enough shape to stand up and hammer the hills . It should be a good year to add to my collection . I bought a Rad Mission at the get rid of it price and I love it . I also picked up a FLX Babymaker 2 and it is also a great bike . Both can be ridden with motor off for a good % of my rides so range is good . I also picked up a Propella Mini and it is quite fun but needs a 48 volt 500 watt motor with a 10 ah battery.I have a scrambler style 52 volt 30ah bike that is fast and has long range but it is my least favorite bike . Not into the clumsy 4 inch tire trend and the scrambler style bike really suck if you want to pedal them .
Just got an ecargo myself. I don't know how mainstream these will ever really be, but they bridge the gap quite well between a standard bike and a car - just not necessarily for the reasons people continue to drive.
Another great video.
I am 62 and have been on an Eike for about 7 years now. I would consider a trike if the still didn't look like my grandmother would be riding it.
There are many more formitable ebike companies you can discuss besides Rad Power Bikes and Lectric. Rad has been stagnent with their product and Letric has quality issues. Magicycle has the 52V 20 ah battaries and 750W hub motors for their top 2 models as standard plus they're coming out with a full suspension model, the Deer, with the same power. Wicked, Ariel Rider and Himiway offer similar quality models too with one offering full suspension. These are the companies moving the bar.
Thanks for the predictions. I predict more dual battery configurations, they are great for cold weather.
Awesome. How about doing a review on the Priority E Coast?
Here's something interesting, years ago I had eight vehicles, all different, some for work, 2 for fun and the others were work in progress hobbies, I absolutely loved my driving. Now I have a small van and an e mountain bike, 1000w 48v......even through the coldest weather recently I haven't driven my van for nearly 3 weeks !
That's the difference my electric bike makes, I'd prefer a higher speed ( legal) limit especially when riding in traffic.....and some type of incentive from Governments to get more people out of their cars, now I'm retired I don't qualify for the ride to work scheme, nor when I was self employed.
I have a SWFT Zip myself, the thing was actually able to still work on a 45 degree uphill angle
I would love to have an electric trike! I may even build one for myself this year.
Agree about fire safety standards, state incentives, rise of the cargo bike. Disagree that DTC race-to-the-bottom is the trend this year. I Expect soft economy to kick fly-by-night companies to the curb.
A big part of our sustainability problem in this world is people failing to invest in long lasting products with the expectation of keeping those things going for decades. This has to change. I hope to see attitudes change away from buying cheap and often, and instead to careful choices that can be maintained with standardized interchangeable parts, which has long been a massive benefit in the bike industry.
Very insightful, I am a huge bike person, I think torque sensors will replace cadence on most bikes.I think Magicycle is the brand to watch.
In my opinion, the battery is one of the main items on the ebike. They are becoming more and more company specific and I'm not sure I like that. I know it looks good on the down tube but if the company goes out of business then no more battery and the loss of thousands of dollars for a disabled ebike. The company, if still in business, may even say after some years that they no longer support your bike and again you are out of luck. I myself prefer a battery that I can purchase from many different places kind of a "standard" battery. Another issue is the battery bracket\holder many are not standard and cause problems when buying a new battery in replacement. In my experience a battery lasts around 2-4 years and it's around 500-600 for a new one. In my opinion the battery is the most worrisome item on the ebike.
I agree, this is why I build my own ebikes with the BBSHD. It is the only long term, sustainable option. As new battery technology comes out I can just build my own battery.
We can probably disassemble the depleted battery and replace cells, not that we want to do that. Standard format batteries would be a good trend.
Love from Cameroon 🇨🇲🇨🇲
Yes, we are the Saibaike ebike manufacturer. Our company have built up warehouse in USA. So that our client can save on Tax and shipping time. You will need to wait 2-7 days to get the ebike after order placed.
i love our Rad bikes thousands of miles on both with zero issues, the one thing i would like to see is the dash screen connect to my Garmin watch, it be cool to track air temps, heart rates things like that, maybe even control music on the dash, answer calls, all the features on my watch...keep on pedaling
I am currently putting together a recumbent trike with 1000W 48/52V motor, my battery is 14P 5S 15 mAh 30A BMS and controller. I am a US Army veteran whose disability is not service related, just a bad fall related, hence the need for the recumbent. A sacroiliac joint injury made a conventional bike impossible, the recumbent places the pedal force at a different angle, making pedaling less painful. Type 2 diabetes medication has caused muscle atrophy so the long distances to the bank and food store are not possible on my own power and frozen food would thaw, so, this is my best option. Started last September I think, maybe October. I'll get there, I don't give up!
I have learned from watching your videos on battery building. BTW, pure nickel strip is not available, commercial grade ferrous alloy is the norm, yet advertised as pure.
If it goes the three wheeler route: two wheels in the front and one in the back is safer. I believe #FUV had a concept bike.
What's your predictions on bolt on ebike kits?
That is pretty cool!
Nice info shared here. I was just looking at an Ebike with 60Ah, which is crazy as I ride my bike almost everyday. Great video man, thank you sir.
Which bike?
@@andyfumo8931 I have the Jetson Warren Ebike.
keep up the good work
great info
Mikey I do see the large batteries getting more common. Like Magicyclecs's whole line up, and half of Juiced and Himingway's line up are 48/52v 20AH batteries. Also Rize is new brand I just notice. All of their models have 2nd battery option!
For some reason you’ve missed Magicycle. They have been a leader with big batteries and continue. 52 V and 20 amp hours this year. And they just released a full suspension bike this year.
Hey Micah....or anyone. I'm considering getting a Hiboy P7 @$900 for an ex-wife so she can join my kids and grandkids on escooters. I was going to put a Bafang or Ebikeling conversion kit on her bike, but there just doesn't seem to be a big price difference between a diy kit and a entry level....maybe $200 or so. I could save more money if I built my own battery....which I plan to do at some point, but I'm not there yet, and I want to do something in the next few days. Am I missing something? Cheaper option that is still going to be reliable? Does anyone have any thoughts on all this?
Hope your right would like all that to come true! Ready to make another buy and more knowledgeable now. Looking for a real good buy for the money.
Great video
great insight, lets see
What about the automatic transmissions? Do you think we’ll start to see more and the prices or tier levels start to come down?
The little companies may not have gone out of business due to the supply chain and whoever had a bike sold it. Thanks for all your videos appreciate them.
I’m looking at the Aventon Pace 500. Do you think I could take this bike on trails? If not what bike is comparable to how comfortable this bike is but I can ride on trails?
1. Better insurance coverage with road side assistance.
2. Integrated security with a Apple "where's my device"/"Amber" alert. Press a button, bike locked, alarm set. If stolen alert goes to whole world.
3. Lighter weight, 25 lbs. 25 mile range with aux battery to double triple range.
Micah....maybe your thoughts on DIY vs. Pre-made? The prices seem to be converging, and maybe not worth building your own anymore. Am I missing something?
I hope you are correct about tax incentives or other subsidies. Thanks for the updates and analysis. Be well
Trikes are more so for the mobility aspect vs the recreational. Now I hope they make some more beefier trikes as I love the ability to carry a butt ton of gear....two x JBL Partybox 330 blue tooth "portable" speakers :) I'll let you look those up
We all want better specifications and better value. Will production be able to supply the demand?
Hey, just bought a Ranger from CyRusher. Looking forward to riding.
Good episode.
enjoyed this. good dodge on that obstacle at 2:10. Agree on the low end quality improvement. Not so sure about the non-ebike brands getting into the game.
Tesla ?
You had a bike in the beginning of the video that was green and could carry a passenger. What brand was it?
Great Vids! enjoy your stuff, I had a ?, I have a 60V 20A battery I bought, but no charger. Can you recommend a Universal charger(s). Silverfish Style, Dimensions: 565*110*76.6mm
X.L.R charging top port
Bottom 2P discharging port
In Michigan the city of Ann Arbor has an Ebike rebate but on specific ones, but I did hear the state government is looking to do a wider program. I'm debating if I might wait because it could be a while.
My prediction is there are too much ebike inventory, prices are getting much better this year.
I have an I7 vitilan E Bike. Love it
Your the man, Micah!
Micah, what about the future of carbon belt drive with internally geared rear hub, like Priority. Derailleurs are for manual bikes. I don’t want to deal them on Ebikes.
In middle of Covid bought a Lectric XP. Was very happy with then supply for more became a problem. Sold it to a friend
