I remember when I was a kid playing this in the late 80s at a friend's house, and he showed me the 1 UP cheat with the goomba shell on the stairs, there are other cheats in this game that players probably discovered by mistake, or from constantly playing the game, like the grapevine 1 UP, but the goomba shell was like the most obvious and overly used cheat to help you beat Super Mario Bros. if you had little skill.
