I had a V3 and fell for the upgrade - X5 battery doesn’t last nearly as long as the V3 did. In common with approx 50% of the population I am a female but I haven’t yet been to a course where the red tees are an option (except my home course, after I got on to customer service). Also at my home course there are at least 3 significant water hazards which don’t show up in the hazards screen and some of the bunkers seem to be shown on the wrong side. Will get around to mentioning these to Shotscope, but haven’t done so yet as I want to catalogue all the discrepancies before I do so.

Great review, very detailed. Im considering getting my first golf watch. I've read the X5 has improved with all the firmware updates. Having used them both would you go for the X5 or V5?
    Thanks

Thanks. I do think it's improved and is a little more premium looking. That said the V5 is very user friendly and does exactly what it says... I'd probably leave towards the V5. If relevant, I think they have a sale on through till the end of September.

Thanks. As far as battery, I have a V3 that I've had less than a month, and have no problem getting 2 rounds out of it, but I don't think I could get 3 rounds without a bit of charge between rounds. Lithium ion batteries last a very long time, so long as you keep them ideally between 20% charged and 85% charged. With the V3, you get little guidance as to where you are, so I suspect most people let them discharge completely at times, or charge them to 100% frequently, and thus, after a year or two, the battery will just not do very well anymore.
I have ordered an upgrade to the X5 on the special offer, and should get it in a week or so. I appreciate your review of it, and I'm definitely looking forward to all the new features, and improved accuracy. I do have one question, though. What becomes of the old V3? Can I give it to a friend? Or, is it permanently disabled due to the upgrade special?

Great tips, thanks. If you're like me then you're going to love the X5, I think it's a really good jump forward from the V3.
In terms on the V3, I'm planning to give mine to a friend. I think I've read that you can reset it to basically pass it on as almost new.
The switch to the X5 was very easy. Switch the tags, pair via the app and you're away. They've also done a new firmware update since I did the video and things like unlocking during the round are even easier now.
      Good luck.

@@JonPerkinsGolf Good to know. Thanks. I was hoping that was the case. On the other hand, I have a Coros sports watch for other things, and when I upgraded from an Apex to a Vertix, they killed the Apex remotely, and it can no longer be used by anyone. I will definitely pass the V3 to someone - it is still an excellent watch.

Good video as I'm weighing up buying one. My biggest issue with shot tracking is playing winter golf will reduce yardages making the year averages meaningless. Is there any option to have summer yardages and winter yardages?

    • @JonPerkinsGolf
      @JonPerkinsGolf  Рік тому

Thanks! In the stats section you can choose to look at stats over different periods, such as last 10 rounds, last 3 months etc, etc. I think that might help you as you can basically define the time period to view stats from, so you could narrow it to winter/summer and so on. Hope that helps!

After 3 rounds, I still have to check if distances are correct but I’m not that sure…
The real issue are is the tags’ detection: at least a couple of shots per hole are not detected, and this force you to edit your round carefully each time, if you want any meaningful stat.
In the next rounds I’ll double check my distances with my Bushnell, and if not correct, I’ll send it back.

This felt very much a beta product - that said the X5 firmware is being improved (multiple updates over the 3 weeks that I used it) and on spec is a good replacement for the V3.
But I gave up within the 30 day returns warranty and after waiting 3 days for a response (to be fair there are a lot of public holidays in the UK this month) I got a no questions asked refund paid the same day on supplying proof of posting. So full marks to Shot Scope support for that. I am a keen user of the shot scope tracking so I have dusted off my old V2 watch and I am looking to buy a replacement V3 watch (as I sold mine to partially fund the X5) or maybe an H4.
I was initially worried by the screen visibility as setting it up indoors was a real issue, but once on the course the screen is OK (except for their choice of white on cyan club selection which is problematic). I did find the GPS was slow to start up, and once running took some time to settle. The club tracking was no worse or better than the V3. The touch screen needs fine tuning, swipe to unlock was very if-ish with my fingers - but I fully expect them to fix these kinds of problems eventually.
The real killer for me was the current short battery life - I found I needed most of the battery to play a single round. This may well be my fingers, or the way I used it (my multiple attempts needed to unlock, find and use a feature would eat battery) but as I cannot change me or my fingers - back it had to go.

@@NastyBiscuit1 full disclosure, the battery isn't as good as I first though and would be good if it was better. It more than last a round, so it's no major issue, and as a day to day watch it probably lasts two days between charges. Ideally it would be better though.

You aren't the only one. Four rounds in, mine has worked -- poorly -- for one round. Either it stops recognizing tags or it won't acquire a GPS signal. Support has been responsive, though slow, but just keeps asking for clarification or, in the latest case, asking that I wait a week for the forthcoming firmware upgrade (the fourth in the space of a couple of weeks) which is supposed to resolve the GPS issue.

I have used the previous two iterations and am trying to get a refund on the X5. 3 attempts to use it with it having major problems first time and it not picking up the last three holes at all. Since then it just wont connect. The V3 is available for £129 and I would strongly recommend going that route until they actually fix what is, in reality, a braclet.

I've had a similar experience, and you'll find more accounts on golf discussion boards. Either reviewers received hand-picked, debugged models, or the reviews were based on marketing materials, not actual field testing. There is no chance whatsoever that the reviewers all got lucky while virtually every consumer has experienced significant problems with even the most basic functions.
