Great video and I agree with everything you said. It does take a while to get used to the buckle being in a stupid place. The touch screen on mine seems a bit iffy too, especially if you've started on the 10th hole and after the 18th it says end round or resume round and no matter how you hit the screen it ends the round and you can't undo it so I've learnt now to use the button to select things. The watch is good for your ego though as you finish and says you've shot +4 until you make all the amendments on the dashboard and your true score is +14 because of all the shots it's missed (easier to add penalties post round I've found). I just hope they can bring out a 'live' version so when you hit your 5 iron, it shows on the app straight away.

Thanks for the review. 👍🏻 Just my opinion and know different for others but I think they try to hard with these watches. I used to buy into it and have a Garmin s60 (I think that’s what it is) but as I use it, round after round, I use it for FMB only. As I get into < 120 I use a laser. I’m now thinking of ditching the watch and getting a small hand held to clip onto my bag.

Great review. My biggest gripe (after putting up with all the firmware updates since getting the X5) is the Touchscreen. Perfect when the weather is good but a nightmare when it rains. The touchscreen becomes too sensitive or doesn't work properly at all. Even though I have the screen set to lock, when I try to unlock it using the screen (or bezel) it won't work in the rain. When it does open, it jumps around from menu to menu, making the features unworkable. Also, again even with the screen locked, my sleeve over the screen, opens the lock itself and moves around the menus so that when you look at the watch for distances to the FMB, it has moved onto a different hole. I understand that the watch was designed to have a great touchscreen function but I point to the fact that the company is based in Scotland so I don't know how this flaw (with the weather in Scotland) wouldn't have been identified well in advance of launch. However, they have released so many firmware updates at this stage, I'm confused as to why this hasn't been rectified. Maybe, they expect their watch to be only used in dry climates and, if so, they should say this. I'm after persevering with the X5 this far and will give it a while more but I'm not sure that the focus hasn't moved onto their later iteration (the G5) which is the "budget" version of the X5 and now all firmware updates to the X5 are "finished" Also, the X% was promised to have a "hole layout" added during the summer but I haven't seen any mention of this in recent postings.

I have been a Shot Scope user virtually from when the began and agree with all you say. My V3 battery was beginning to die around the time the X5 launched so I upgraded making it the 4th watch I’ve bought from them.
Unfortunately I’m concluding that they’ve overstretched with this version. The touch screen is way too fiddley to use especially with a golf glove and even though they appear to have fixed the frequent crashes with firmware updates, l’m still troubled by involuntary scrolling to unwanted screen views, as the screen lock feature is too annoying to use.
I agree their data analysis is outstanding but since I upgraded I’ve gone from downloading and editing every single round to only doing so rarely. Bottom line … if Shot Scope offered to replace the X5 with the old V3, I’d bite their hand off!

I am now in my second year of using Shot Scope and have switched from V3 to X5. So far I have not regretted the change. As with every new release, there are always problems. So far Shot Scope has always responded very quickly and I can say that I have not had any significant problems with the watch since the last 10 rounds. Of course, there are times when the watch does not register a shot, but if you make a practice swing before the shot, there is almost no chance that the shot will not be registered. The feature of entering the score after each hole played makes a score card obsolete.
After the round, I always check my score in the dashboard. This still works best via a browser or tablet. It is rather tedious on a mobile phone.
Post-processing the round is always necessary. This was already the case with Arccos and anyone who wants to analyse their golf game accurately will always check their data again to ensure that the result corresponds to the truth.
For the price, there is currently nothing comparable on the market. If you only want a GPS watch, you will certainly find cheaper solutions, but even compared to the watches of my Golf Buddies, the TomTom, Golf Buddy and Garmin, the watch performs excellently and the GPS reception is just as good as the Garmin S42.

I had an X5 for a couple of weeks and used it for 3 or 4 rounds. One of the tags broke off, it was on a club that I hadn't even used. Also the screen unlocking was kind of hard to get used to - you have to swipe up or turn the crown a couple of times. Finally the 'backwards' watch band was awkward. I ended up returning the watch.

I bought this watch at release and mentioned the screen being useless in wet weather in other youtube reviews. (And got shot down 😆) A smidge of rain on the screen renders it unusable and can send the screen nuts, this is not good if like me you play golf in all weathers (especially in the UK 😂). But.. that and the annoying swipe up/turn dial unlock (which you I know you can turn off.. but you really need it on) are the only two faults I have with it. It would benefit from a third button on the left side to press to unlock. Battery life has been okay with mine.. not great, but I get two rounds out of it easily. I use mine atleast 4 times a week in all weather conditions, so if shotscope need someone to test waterproof screens I'd be happy to help out 😂. Having to keep it bone dry in the rain spoils what I think is otherwise a great watch. 👍
edit to say after reading other comments: mine has never missed a shot nor added shots during a round, every shot/club tag has been correct. The tag system has been excellent. The stats are super helpful.. firmware updats are swift and shotscope keep you informed via email when theres one due. Water on the screen is my only real gripe which shotscope really need to sort out.

Good review. Been having a good deal of issues with the new X5. Battery life is a bid dodgey, with some rounds finished with only 37% battery life remaining. Been through several firmware updates to fix issues with post-round editing. On the plus side, the GPS accuracy is the best of any golf GPS I've used so far.

I had one round where I ended with 7%. I had another where I only started with 80%, so i opted to only track strokes on the back nine, as there was no chance it would make the entire round, since it was a Saturday, and I expected a 5 hour round.

    • @joeperez3520

    • @carlr2837
      @carlr2837 10 місяців тому

@@joeperez3520 I just forgot to charge it that one day. My bad. Also, I prefer 3 hour rounds, but it often doesn't work that way. It's when the rounds get over 5.5 hours that you start risking running out. I estimate that from a full charge, it will run 6.5 hours or so on gps+track mode.

  • @carlr2837
    @carlr2837 10 місяців тому

I agree with much of what you say, and disagree with some of it (i love the edit/review process, but then, I use a desktop for it, especially now that they highlight differences between the detected strokes and the manually recorded score). I also one major complaint, which I will mention at the end. First, I will talk about the places I agree with you. The X5, and it's improved sensors, is much, much more accurate than the V3 about picking up shots. The X5 is definitely more stylish. The X5 has an unacceptable battery life, a bit over 6 hours in GPS mode. In my senior league, rounds are often 5.5 hours. For those, you are going to have to start at 100%, or you may be under 10% when you finish, if you make it at all. As the watch ages, and the battery life gets shorter, it will eventually fall under 5 hours, and then there will be rounds where it dies before the end of the round. If it does die, it kicks you back into meters, which means all those of us who play in yards will have wrong numbers until we reset it back to yards for the next round (you can't change it mid round).
I love the "last shot distance" feature (but it seems to use a lot of battery life). When I hit an errant shot, I normally have a pretty good idea how far I hit it, and I also watch the line the ball traveled. If i think I hit it 210 yards, and I walk on the correct line until I get to 210 yards, I can usually find the ball quickly, even in deep rough.
My biggest complaint, by far, is the fact that the touch screen is active the entire time you are putting (which probably eats a ton of battery life, by the way). As I watch others putt, or study the line, or when I bend down to mark my ball, I often put my left hand behind my back. This causes the watch to record a 2 putt par, with the pin in some random location, and also stops it from detecting the locations from which I putt. There is no solution that I have found that is satisfactory, so I have given up on having putting data.
Thus, my one big suggestion for improving this watch - leave the screen locked while putting, and then have me unlock to activate the pin collect. That will save significant battery life, and make the entire watch more useful. Another minor suggestion is that, if you start on a hole other than #1, when you reach hole #18, it should guess that you are about to play hole #1. Around here we are often started on the back nine, then play the front (to even out play), so after 18, you have to remember to change to #1. Also, it is an inconvenience when you do a shotgun start.

I currently game a Garmin S42 and after a year and half of issues Garmin finally sent out a new S42 with a warranty but in the back of my mind i think it will faulter like the several replacements sent from them. I am a huge fan of Garmin in their sleekness of products but due to the issues i have had i will most likely look elsewhere. I was looking at the Shot scope X5, however after your review i will perhaps hold off for a while. Question i am asking myself is i want a gps watch that is accurate to 6 or 7 yards anymore will be a waste of time as i have found recently with my S42. Sometimes this watch is very precise but then it could be 10 yards out which is another club and not fit for purpose.

I wouldn’t suggest the Shot Scope, or any other gps device in this middle tier price range are any more accurate that the Garmin, so you may want to consider the S62, or trying a laser rangefinder if you want improved accuracy?

I really enjoyed this review. And although you made some very good points, I think we need to understand what the purpose is of this unit. I think most people will utilize this watch for what it’s meant to be used for. Many people don’t wear watches for daily wear anymore. I stopped using Arcoss because it was also glitchy and it was expensive. I’m expecting that there will be some issues with this watch but my level of frustration will being minimized because I’m not paying for a subscription. I had the V3 and loved it. I upgraded to the X5 and it has been a nightmare. Took 2 months of updates to make it functional.
    My problems:
When I drop a club, it registers a shot.
It misses about 20% of shots.
When standing on green, it doesn’t recognize 25% of the time.
Distance hit is way off although the distance to greens is pretty accurate.

I was an early adopter, took advantage of the £100 off offer to existing users (V3). After two weeks, four rounds and two firmware updates I sent it back.
For me Shot Scope launched it too early, clearly they wanted return on investment and put an incomplete product out there, so my view was I was not prepared to pay for them to develop the thing on the hoof.
I also think some of the features are not in practice any use. For example the pin positioning; on how many holes can you see the pin position with sufficient clarity to move it to an accurate position on the watch.......not many.
I also think the launch strategy; to get "influencers" on board was aggressive, and gave the whole thing an "Emperors new clothes" feel to it. Leaves a bad taste.
The V3 is fine, and has benefited from some of the updates to the X5. (Lay up distances)

I agree with everything in your review! The X5 is my first experience of a ShotScope product and it's been a huge disappointment. I've bitten the button to renew an Arccos subscription as the functionality and feel of their Apple Watch app is so much better and improving all the time. The X5 has some good features but overall it feels like a product that's been rushed to market without proper testing. Who markets a watch in the UK with a touchscreen that doesn't like the rain?!? I still have the watch and hope they'll make further improvements to encourage me to give it another try but for now it'll be staying in the drawer. Such a pity. (Arccos is by no means perfect either, missed shots and some post-round editing needed but overall its miles ahead from ShotScope right now).

I agree with ALL the comments on product issues as I have experienced all noted. Why have a watch that can't keep accurate score forcing you to manually keep score and shot details. Why get frustrated on the course because the watch isn't working correctly - fails to pick up clubs, fails to capture all shots, switches to pin collect when crossing the green to get to your shot and neither the touch screen or bezel seem to work to get you back to the hole. Why when starting on a different hole doesn't the watch with GPS recognize that as the starting hole. Disappointed in the watch and think there are better products on the market.

A couple comments. The manual score is a good idea as it makes sure you have an accurate score. That way when you edit the round, it can highlight places where the score it recorded doesn't match the manual score. Second, if it goes to pin collect when crossing the screen, just hit the back button, and "exit", and it goes back into shot mode. I totally agree that when you do a shotgun start, or start on hole 10, it should be able to figure that out.

It doesn't "change" your score on the app; it just shows the strokes it recorded. Now, though, at last, they have started to highlight the holes where the manual score you recorded disagrees with the strokes it computed, allowing you to find the things that need correcting quickly. Usually that is penalty strokes or missed shots. It should have done that from the start, but at least it does it now.

The dashboard is a lot more user friendly, but the watch features have so many glitches. My home hack is 27 holes and it seems like none of the course options keep a scorecard with 18 consecutive holes. Very disappointed so far.

Thanks for watching and sharing - there a theme developing in the comments, and they generally reflect what I say in the video...this watch is disappointing.

These devices barely last a year with the tracking feature. After that it becomes an expensive GPS device that does not track anything and could be dealt with cheaper options or even your phone.
Also consider when the tracking tags gets lost, broken, etc. specifically the putter tag... They have a putter tag pack to sell you when that happens. You will also need to buy a new set of tags if for some of the unfortunate reasons mentioned you loose any of the other club's tags and want to keep tracking. Buyer beware.

See how you get on with it, as I say, there’s plenty of golfers who will love it 👍 if not, I’m pretty sure they offer a generous returns policy 👍

I wouldn't panic! I've had no issues with it picking up clubs, just use it for golf so battery life not an issue, touchscreen took a little getting used to but when you know where to press it's easy. Fair criticism that it struggles in (heavy) rain but found this review incredibly negative compared to my experience having replaced the basic garmin one with this a few months back.

Posted (edited) one day ago….screen shots don’t reflect current firmware.

You’re right, could get footage of everything I wanted to show with the latest firmware, but the screen shots have come from Shotscope’s website, so not a huge amount I could do there. Most of my footage is with the latest firmware from the time of posting, with a few shots using previous versions

So there is no map other than the green? Seems quite primitive

Just sent mine back for a refund due to terrible battery life, poor touchscreen, up to 14 shots per round not registering even though watch was displaying the correct club and also the correct club picked up on the watch at the tee box but post round a different club would be assigned

Shot scope has really pissed me off to the point that I am just going to return the whole system and will look at the other companies for something similar. My watch wouldn't sync with my phone after my round. i know the information is in my watch but the sync wouldn't work. only freeze the system. when I tried to contact shot scope support for help they wanted me to pay for the help.
    F THEM.
This is a shitty way to do business and I can't say enough negative things about this whole experience.
    DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY

I apologize for my words. For this reason only very few. This watch is the biggest letdown of my life. Slow, touchscreen miserable, operation confusing. Instead of help, a permanent annoyance on the golf course. Garbage. Far down in the garbage...
