  • The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e is a plug-in hybrid SUV with both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. They work together for more power and better fuel economy but you can also drive this luxury BMW suv as a full EV with a range of about 30 miles.
    This video shows the charging process for the BMW X5 xDrive45e plug in hybrid at a ChargePoint EV Level 2 charging station in Palm Desert. This charging station is 3.3 kWh so it takes about six hours to charge the X5 to full capacity. You get 5 miles of range for each hour of charging. It cost just over $10 to charge the X5 on this public ChargePoint electrical vehicle charger.

    Adding 28 miles of range for $10 is not cheaper than gas. ChargePoint costs are rated in time not power. Since the 45e charges so slow, it costs more than gas. Just charge at home.
    If the battery has 17 kWh usable capacity and my electricity is $0.11/kWh plus 10% loss is around $2.06 per 36 miles. That is cheaper than $5 gas plus the engine doesn’t run and wear out. I’ll do that unless gas drops below $2.
    Also the 45e comes set from the factory to only charge at 6 amps by default. While this prevents overloading a 110v circuit at home running a garage refrigerator, but this can lead to 24+ hour charge times. The setting to change this is in a difficult place to find but found it. Set to 10 amps and that helps without overloading the circuit, it allows up to 16 amps. The 110v plug the BMW uses in my garage is on a 15 amp breaker. Breaker has not tripped with 10 amps going to 45e and running the fridge.

    Fred, thanks for the video. My understanding is the 45e has a 3.7 kWh on-board charger (some sites say 3.8 kWh) so your 5.5 to 6 hour charging time is normal and expected, even on a level 2 charger. On a regular home 110v circuit I've seen times of 11 to 15 hours reported. Obviously BMW expects most drivers to recharge the car overnight.

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you are correct. The BMW site says 4.5-5.5 hours to charge on a Level 2 charger. And yes, up to 12 hours to charge on 110v at home.

    First I'd like to thank the author for the great video, it was very useful to watch, as I am planning to lease an X5. I was not sure should I get an EV option for an extra $6000 or not. But after watching this video, I'm definitely going to get standard gasoline version, even in expensive state as CA where I pay $4-5 for a gallon of gas, 30 miles will cost me around $6-8 (20 mpg combined) and it will take 5 minutes to have a full tank. Maybe I am missing some point here, but if you don't have house with solar panels installed or free EV charger at your apartment complex parking it doesn't make sense to lease/buy this PHEV model.

    • @FreddySherman

      Some people want it for the ecological impact benefits, if that makes sense. Also, it's perfect if you have a commute that is less than 30 miles. Then you can charge cheaply at home, at night and at the office and pay no fuel for the commute. Also keep in mind this is an expensive, retail charger and there may be cheaper public options available.

      I'm not sure if the price difference last year was $6k or not, but I just ordered one and the price difference between X540i and X545e was only $800. Given the 45e qualifies for the $7500 tax credit that makes the 45e $6700 cheaper which was a deciding factor for me. I'll just plug it every night in the garage and leave it in hybrid mode which should return 50mgpe. That is the thinking anyway

    So, you will pay $10 to drive 30 miles? Shouldn’t be electric to be cheaper then gas? Even charging at home for $3 seems to be close to the gas.Not sure if I’m missing something here or this is the price to be “green”?

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  3 роки тому +3

      What you're missing is the gasoline engine part. You can't compare it to a Tesla or pure EV. It gives you that convenience of not having to charge it.
      It's perfect for someone who commutes less than 30 miles. You can commute during the week on electric power and then drive it like a normal gas SUV on the weekends on road trips and things like that.
      Many charging stations are free, so if I planned better, I could have charged it for free at city hall or near me at a UC campus. You could also install a charger at home, and then that charge would cost a lot less than paying at a public charger.

      Exactly: a gas vehicle with 30 mpg would cost about $3 for 30 miles and take 5 minutes. So no economy from that viewpoint. Charging at home should be cheaper, but how much? And the hybrid does recoup from regenerative braking, but it is hard to see that accounting enough to greatly reduce the $10 cost.
      An ordinary hybrid like the new Venza gets between 35 & 40 mpg according to Fuelly.com. However, the Venza also uses a special Atkinson gas engine that it manages to operate at peak efficiency at all times. Which means its gas engine also is getting terrific mpg. So it is unclear how much gas is saved by using it to charge the battery.
      It kinda looks like the battery advantage of the hybrid is largely due to being able to operate the gas engine this very efficient way and supplying the lacking torque from electric motors.
      The bottom line is probably to avoid these charging stations as much as possible.

    Thank you very much for the video. I have 2 questions:
    1. Does the hybrid mode work the same as a traditional hybrid car but you have the ability to run the car fully on the battery, correct?
    2. If you don't charge the battery and just let it run in hybrid mode, can it still achieve 50 mpg? Will the car self charge the battery? If yes, how much battery volume can be charged?

    • @FreddySherman
      @FreddySherman  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching it.
      1. Yes, you can put it on battery-only mode and it has 30 miles of range.
      2. Yes, the gas engine will recharge the battery but it does take a long time. I would think you need to drive hours and hours or hundreds of miles for it to recharge that way. Also they recommend you drive in Sport mode if you want to charge the battery as quickly as possible. The ideal thing is to charge it fully at home or at a public charger, then drive it normally and let the car decide on the power mode, using both electric and gas power. It's perfect if your commute is lessthan 30 miles. You can recharge at home and office, virtually drive for free during the week, then drive it as a regular SUV on the weekends.

      @FreddySherman  2 роки тому

      You are correct but there are a lot of variables. Many companies and cities have free chargers. This was a one time thing for me and if you use the charger frequently, I believe the rate would be lower.
      It's also for people who want to reduce their carbon footprint and drive electric not with gas. They are more concerned with that than the cost.
      Last thing is that some people do not charge it, they just drive it like a hybrid and let it recharge itself. You can't drive on electric only, but it helps the gas engine and gives you better mileage, like driving a Prius.

I mean, 5.5 hours at a public charging station is ridiculous,....I mean, I really don't want to buy a Tesla,...but BMW is making it quite easy for me to do so. I mean what does Tesla know about '"Fast Charging Technology" over other auto manufacturer's engineers? Hmm, apparently a LOT! Also, the charge rates appears to be high if you ask me. I mean, lets 28 miles of charge @ $10.11 is right at $0.36 per mile, and lets say if one got up to 41 miles out of the charge, then that equates to a cost of $14.80. So, lets say if my 2012 X5M got 15mpg,...@ $3.60 per gal! That equates to$10.80 for 45 miles vs $14.80 for 41 miles. Now, I already know that the 2020/2021 X5 40i,..yes, 40i gets way better MPGs than my 2012 X5M. But what the heck is going on with this mat,....what an I missing in all of this? Finally, this is a very expensive, retail charger and I am a not a frequent charger, so I pay high rates. I just wanted to use the closest system so I did not shop around for the best rates. Also, many chargers at work or school are free.

      @@FreddySherman You're welcome and thank you,...as I've watched nearly every X45e vid out there and not one hit on the charging info as you did! Perfect!

      @@JMD535 thank you. I just had the pollstar too to review which is a fully electric car, designed to compete with the Tesla model 3. It can use that fast charging to give you a full charge in about 40 minutes, with a range of about 220 miles.

      @@FreddySherman yes but your missing the fact that the hybrid engine model drastically reduces the gas mileage by like 20% if you choose to use the gas engine vs just having an all gas X5 which performs a better mpg.

      @@derekderek2570 I know that. You're missing the fact that it's about the convenience of having both technologies on the same vehicle. You give up some things to have that convenience, like a faster charging time. All PHEV vehicles, from all manufacturers have similar charging times, it's not fast like a BEV vehicle.

    That's abysmal. BMW should be ashamed and embarrassed of their charging curve. My wife and I were very interested in this model but now it's scratched off our list of potential car purchases.

      It's normal for PHEV vehicles. Remember you have the convenience of a gas engine, so that is the price you pay, slower charging than a BEV.

      Looks like a case of sour grapes! With a $200 Level 2 EVSE, it charges in 5 -6 hours , more than enough for 99% of users who do less than 40 miles commute a day. The safety of gas is always there.

      So you can afford an $80k BMW yet imagine yourself stopping to recharge every 30 miles? Clownworld.
