I have the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e and love the ride, handling, and quietness. My kids have the executive tables which connect to the adapters on the back of the front seats - gives them better cup holders and room for their tablets on trips. The tech is great, especially the traffic jam assist. What I don't like is the limited legroom in the 2nd row, with no ability to recline the 2nd row or slide it back for more legroom. Even for my 8 and 10-year-olds, the back feels cramped - and when an adult is back there it really is tight (too tight for a luxury vehicle). I charge mine each night on a 110 outlet and rarely use gas. I'm on tank #4 of gas and I purchased this 14 months ago. I'd like to see BMW add enabling the front view camera automatically when coming to a stop, reclining rear seats, more leg room in 2nd row, better cup holders all around (even the front cup holders block access to the over-heating wireless charger and storage space). Speaking of the over-heating wireless controller - my X5 killed 1 iPhone due to the known over-heating issue so I am very careful when using the wireless charger.
This car well-speced with federal credit is actually same price as Model Y with autopilot. Credit to Elon though, he can get people spending crazy money on a Tesla which is technically cool but terribly built.
Anyone who lived in Sandy’s path back in 2012 and has a good memory would never buy a Tesla. I guess 25% of my neighbors don’t remember losing power for 9 days.
I got mine last December and love it! The $12,500 tax rebate made it the same price as my 2011 X5 4.8L V8 with identical 0-60 time but much better gas mileage. It is still puzzling why the US version does not make full use of the battery capacity.
Old take it off-road... it’s amazing like amazing! We got ours with the off road package and we live in northern Cali mountains near Napa, we cross creaks climb rocks doesn’t matter, raise it up to 10.5 inches of ground clearance but with the smaller 18inch wheels we have with large sidewall tires, it’s nearly 11inchs of clearance. Ev mode off roading yes!
I think the battery capacity has something to do with US emissions regulations. Certain vehicles can only have certain ranges and percentages available (why the i3 REX has such limited capability) where as EU isn’t so stringent. Wonder if it can be coded to use more of the battery? Regulations here are SO complex I can’t even begin to imagine their reasoning for the limit. A more simple possibility would be preventing battery degradation but that would likely be global if that were the case
I think it has to do with the warranty on the battery. In USA we get 8 years 80000mls and over sea they get 6 years 60000mls . That’s what I was told when we picked up are car.
I’m in the Uk and I have an M235i with the 6cyl 3.0L and I’d love to have the X5 45e as my next car. I’d also like the GMC Yukon but it’s not available here...
Unfortunately it’s a poor review not knowing this car properly. For example, the inlays are aluminum as option, you can get real wood, gloss or natural finish. Second is the hood close , anyone with recent gen BMWs know it has two latches and needs to be closed properly, even to open the lever needs to be pulled 2x. Those shades are part of exec package or $250 standalone option. The entry is keyless and don’t have to mess around like this guy did. Back row leg space is poor for such a big SUV. Does not recline which is a bummer. not Now we know why this channel has gone downhill and struggling to cross 500K subscribers.
The Volvo XC90 Recharge has half the battery size and still gets almost 20 miles of electric range. That just shows you how much BMW is limiting their battery in this car.
Thanks so much for the review. I just ordered my 2022 45e (traded in my 2019 X5 40i) and I'm really looking forward to getting it in the next couple of months. 5:04 this is a great point, I didn't even think about that. You may have just gotten me interested in a X5. I wonder if it can support a 4ft wide sheet of plywood
I tried to do this on one, and it does work. You do have to manually lower the upper part of the trunk, it will not close electronically if the bottom one is open. (I am looking into if there is a work around for this)
You commented towards the end that it would not be good for off roading. What was your reasoning? Thanks! I am about to buy one and want to drive on dirt roads along the western Sierra Nevada to backpacking trailheads etc
Funny that you mentioned the Taycan which is what I have. I’m looking to buy a hybrid X5 with the 3rd row option. I liked that you mentioned about the battery capacity and the sightlines. Great review.
Got one in June and love it. Also tested Highlander (bland, slow, fugly, bad hood sight lines and not plug in hybrid), Lexus RX350 (fugly grill and rear Pillar area and poor rear visibility), and Kia Telluride (nice for the $$ but uncomfortable seats). Consumer Reports rates X5 very high and gives pretty good reliability rating. Fed and CA EV credits knocked off $9,000 from price.
Fed tax / state tax credit does nothing to knock off the price. If you have the ability to claim 100% of it as part of tax returns, then it makes sense. Your statement is highly misleading
Let’s see if you still love it after a couple years. I hope you have a stack of cash set aside for when it goes to the shop for thousands in repairs. If you have the money, good for you. Normal people that need a reliable car to get to work everyday need to run away from these BMWs
@@clayton8465 Not the same at all, lots of SUV don't have it, you have your legs again the bumper to reach up in the back, with that lower tailgate you won't reach the back row seats, that is if you're tall enough. Don't say it if you didn't try it.
I don't understand why Ford hybrids recharge their batteries from driving and braking, causing 50% of your miles driven to be EV miles and getting 38-43 mpg, like a C-Max or Escape. But Audi and BMW hybrids get worse mpg once the battery depletes. Anyone know?
Mild hybrid systems have no pure EV range. It's a choice made by the engineers. I'm excited to see what the next generation Power boost from Ford will have as a battery, as the current gen only has a 1.5kw capacity (mild, tiny).

Curious Adult height. I don’t think it is that tight. But not roomy for sure.
What is the real life driving electric only range?
I think the lower battery range is due to maximizing the Lithium Ion battery life in order to live up to the 8 year warranty
