In Bulgaria I'm driving the new X5 45e, drove it for the whole summer of 2020. With the Pirelli P 0's, warmed up tarmack and tires, managed to do a 4,89 seconds from 0-62. That is impressive, especially for a 2.5 tone SUV. Every day to day driving is relaxing and enjoyable. Took it on a long journey to Greece and back 2300km it total, couldn't ask for a better experience, and was quite impressed by the economy of the car. Hoping in the next generation, that BMW will introduce a X5 55e with a V8 and an electric motor I would throw my money at them for one.

It’s been so good watching you over the past couple of years. I remember you struggling to get anything from BMW UK! Genuinely your video quality and presentation has improved leaps and bounds the past few months. Well done Joe 👍😄.
Joe, there is a big misunderstanding on how the overall power train works, after the EV range is gone, doesn’t mean the battery is dead, the boost is always there. Looks like you too went by your gut feeling than validating how actually it works. Plus within few miles the battery charges quickly to claw back some EV range… BTW I own this car. Outside of extreme cold weather this SUV can do 480-500 miles of combined range! That’s bladder busting for sure 😅
Excellent review. I am considering one of these to replace my BMW 330e next year. One comment on your section talking about range and the claimed mpg, I have run my 330e for nearly 3 years and I track all of my mileage and electric use as I can claim my mileage back. Over the last year, I have got an average of 105mpg over just under 12k miles. The 330e has a claimed electric range of 25 miles but the most I have achieved is 18 and regularly get 15-16 miles. Due to the regeneration ability, even on long journeys, I have always managed to get at least 50% of my journey using pure electric. Ironically, Sport mode is more economical because the battery regen is much more aggressive. This is where these vehicles excel. The maximum I have got out of a 40 litre tank is 1045 miles, the lowest being 485 miles but that was due to me also using the car as a blue light response vehicle. The only other comment would be the affect of the cold weather. When it’s freezing, I lose about 10% of my range. I believe most EV’s also suffer from this. Again, excellent review and a very nice car.
Typically mine will run about 30 miles on electric range. Temperature seems to affect the range, needless to say cold weather reduces the range. Overall pleased with the car.

Great video as always Joe. As a RRS owner I have to agree that the 45e is a far superior offering to the RRS P400e. A 2ltr lump in a RRS is just wrong and can’t help but think that they’ll rectify that with one of the new straight six engines before long. I’m guessing your quote on the starting point for a RR EV at £91k was based on the Vogue, which in fairness isn’t a direct competitor to X5? The RRS 400e starts at £73, but once loaded with the options most of us would want, the BMW will still have a significant price advantage. My only issue with the latest BMW’s (and for balance I also own an F11 530d touring) is the hideous dash/drivers display arrangement. When it has sat nav info etc showing it just looks a mess IMO. Only charged at home in the garage. Average sine new 2 liters/100km. Tested a loaner X5 30D for the same 140km at 0,63 liters/100km. My conclusion: As long as you charge at home the 45e has less fuel cons. then the 30D at all distancees below 300 km.
Hi Joe, the 42 mile EV range seems fine for the 24kW battery. Once COVID is over, most Execs driving these to the office will have a charger, to fill the battery for their journey home. Charge at home overnight from a normal plug, no problem. Effectively providing an EV for the week, with the performance and range for the weekend. Seems perfect as a transition for now.
i bought a p45e and im getting nearly 1200 miles to the tank full.i use the car everyday and 85 % of my journeys are on electric only so in the real world they work very very well my range rover i was in the gas station every 7 days so im saving money all over
Late viewing this episode - where these hydrids work is to charge at home on night tariff (typically 10p/kwhr). Meaning charge every night at home at cost of £2.40 for daily journey of approximately 40 miles. Great value if purchase price is ignored. Keep safe.
Setting the charge you desire to keep for as you said driving then slowly through London isn't a false eonomy at all, genuius actually. Means on the motorway at 70 mph your combustion engine is running at it's most efficient, and then in town, the more efficient electric powertrain kicks in where the combustion engine would be struggling at 15-20 mpg. Very clever, though amazed it isn't automated...! Great video.
Great video Joe! I picked up one of these last month as needed a larger family car. The pano roof is definitely the option to go for, my daughter loves it. My daily journey is about 20 miles a day in non motorway traffic so I’m only using the electric option. But will do longer journeys when lockdown is lifted to see family etc. So for us is ideal as I can charge it overnight but have the option to do a longer journey when needed with the petrol engine. I did a round trip from west london to Bristol and back and used the full charge plus a quarter tank of fuel which isn’t bad. My Audi S5 would’ve used well over half the tank!
@@JoeAchilles1 100% with the pano roof! I think my main criticism with the car is the rear space isn’t great for a car this size. Q7 would’ve been my first choice for spaciousness however the hybrid range isn’t very impressive at claimed 28 miles and at the time of ordering was only available in sport trim which compared to the s5 is very basic in terms of creature comforts and as the range is less then 30 miles it wasn’t congestion charge exempt.
Thanks Joe, so informative. The X3 30e's range shrinks enough to make this X5 45e model our only hybrid choice for our next car. Our current X3 30i "msport"easily makes the 400 mile journey to our lake cabin where as it would be so disappointing to have to fuel up again to make that same journey with the hybrid X3 version. It's really too early still, and we love our G01, but we'll have to see in what way they improve these models in the near future.
Great review, be interesting to see economy from the petrol engine. Pity they don’t do a hybrid diesel like Mercedes, capture higher mileage user too? Great channel Joe and loving the reviews, keep em coming. 👍
Was considering this but ordered a 30d Msport. I just believe that diesel is (still) the best choice for heavy cars/suvs. Next car might just be fully electric when technology gets better (5-10 years to go) as I am not an early adopter regarding tech.
Anyone can afford one, didnt think I'd afford a Audi A6, bought one, now I drove a X4. You can drive 1 of you want doesn't have to be brand new cause that's a waste of money. Be positive and keep growing
After watching about a dozen video reviews for the X5 e, yours Joe is by far superior. You’ve got an authentic way about your review, super informative and engaging. (plus a little eye candy never hurts)
I agree with Joe and can confirm how efficient this X5-45e is, after driving it for almost 1 year now. Best result I’ve managed is 1389km with 1x fuel tank, just because of using the electric motor for all short trips, so it is possible to make from a 2500kg ‘tank’ and efficient EV 😉 Average is now 6.3 after 20.000km/12.000mls. Using the X5 50-50 highway, so it could be even more efficient. Besides efficiency it’s also a fast Autobahn-cruiser, speeds up to 250km/h is no problem at all, the biggest challenge for the last year has nothing to do with this car; and that’s Covid-19 👈
That 45e combines every comfy aspect of a 6 pot, an electric motor and an SUV. Relaxing ride, enough power, good economy if you charge it regularly. Obviously you won't enjoy this rallying up the Alps. It's just great for what it is. I prefer the 330e, because it shows how sporty a hybrid can be.
Joe...I truly enjoy and value your BMW reviews. You helped immensely in my purchase decision 3 years ago for my '19 BMW 230i xDrive Track Package. We're now considering "downsizing" our vehicles and this x5 45e would seem to be a good fit. Our daily (U.S. based) drives seldom would exceed the claimed 30 miles and we have the ability to install a home charger in our garage for routine overnight charging.
I’ve had the 530e 2019 plate at woth out electric charge it’s pants on few 28mpg driving like miss daisy and in comfort/eco pro. My old XC90 d5 is similar mpg and it’s a 2t plus 7 seater. The electric hybrid works on short journeys like you say and company car tax makes sense.
Ha that's awesome to hear! I thankfully get offers from various companies to sponsor videos these days, that allows me to go with the ones I actually stand behind, chuffed to have some very good detailing kit now 👌
@@JoeAchilles1 was genuinely surprised by how good it is. I only intended to have it on as an interim solution until I could get a full ceramic coating. But lockdown happened and Tbf it’s actually held up really well and if anything, may just need a top up coat. I need some interior cleaner so will use your code for that
Joe, great video. My 440 coupe (same engine) does 30ish mpg on a long run, at pace (yes I know it is not a like for like comparison) I just do not get why people like SUV’s. Estate cars have more space, less weight and therefore more efficient. A M340i estate would be cheaper to buy, a better car to drive and dependant on the type of driving you do it would be a better car to run. Hybrids are sold to bring the manufactures fleet average mpg. SUVs are style over function and have a fat profit margin for the manufacture
I dunno. I drive a 440i gran coupe and I'm very tempted by the X5 45e. More space in the rear (I've got 2 kids), safer, and better practicality. Little things like the boot lid seat for dressing kids or taking off muddy clothes and boots when out and about, the ability to do the school run on electric power only, still having that lovely B58 engine. It's all a very tempting package. I am still comparing this to 545e though, but that is very much an old man wagon and I'm not sure I'm quite that old yet. Still going to hold on to the 440 for another year though.
Charging is in kW. Battery capacity in kWh. And you can only charge it at 3.7 kW, which is pretty slow compared to for example a Mercedes A250e. They offer you 7.4 kW and even DC fast-charging.
I would throw the Lexus RX in. V6, best hybrid technology around, better looking, RX L is there of you want more space. Shame that Lexus infotainment sucks compared to iDrive, but will actually achieve 36mpg and is no doubt put together a bit better too.
How do you compare it with a Cayenne hybrid? We currently have an old Cayenne, we actually take it on light off-road trails. But we are certainly looking at better every day driving. Also an X5 45e might pair well with an old E60 M5.
Another great review Joe, In Ireland here because of the crippling vehicle registration tax that car is over 100k euro. So I would think the 30d is a much more realistic option for rural dweller
It would definitely make more sense imo. But I guess many people see diesel as dirty and hence it doesn’t fit to a „clean“ hybrid. Even though it’s not really like that. If you don’t charge that X5 Hybrid, you’ll get worse fuel economy than a 40i
Some of it has to do with the grams of CO2 emission per kilometer, which is a figure that matters in some european countries with regards to the car being classified as a low emission vehicle etc. Diesel hybrids produce a lot more CO2/km than a petrol hybrid do.
At 9:00 you are talking about the weight of 2510kg. The weight is specified according to 92/21/EEC and 95/48/EC and it includes all liquids and a driver (68kg) with luggage (7kg). 😜
Like Joe I prefer cars to SUVs, and combustion-engine cars to full electrics, however plug-in hybrids *SEEM* to be the best of both worlds (with the exception of losing some cargo capacity), in that you have the same - or even slightly better - range to the equivalent petrol-only car, without any EV range anxiety...yet you still get the help of a small bit of full-EV-style instantaneous torque and, most importantly, very accommodating tax incentives and the knowledge that your car will still be "in" after various draconian government bans on non-electric cars. All that being said, even as only a "begrudging" acceptor of SUVs, the BMW X5 45e seems like the most perfect car being sold today. Its petrol engine is a nearly 300bhp legendary BMW straight six, it looks decent, drives like a dream, has space for 5 passengers and their belongings, the BMW brand cachet, and truly mind-blowing acceleration for what is, at the end of the day, a 2.5 tonne mid-sized family SUV; 0-62mph in 4.97s means it's literally as fast or slightly faster than an E39 M5. And the best part: when you need a daily driver, you have somewhere between 40 and 50 miles of electric-only range, meaning 99% of us can drive to work and back and run errands essentially for free, with the advent of free EV charging springing up in more and more locations.
Great film. Isn't that the same bit of road in the Cotswolds that Harry uses for his handling tests? We should all realise that the official fuel consumption test is a laboratory test which is a very very good test for comparing one car to another "in a laboratory test" only. In fact, you can't really argue with it. Shame it doesn't relate to real-world on the road conditions, but then you could never do that realistically - far too many variables!
I think the negatives you raise at end of review, in my opinion - places it behind the Range Rover - not in front of it. The limitations on luggage capacity isn’t clever in this class. Loving your content & how your channel has grown ...... your reviews I think are very good - well done 👏👏🙏
That is only hybrid which make sense for me. U got enough power, low tax kind off. Still if want to go and ski in Alps don't have to worry about charging it non stop. In thr future gonna change my x5 40d f15 for it.
Love your BMW reviews Joe even though you are a BMW fan you are always completely impartial and I cant waitfor you to review an Alpina B3 as you love a performance wagon and for all I've seen so far from other reviewers I think you'd prefer the suspension set up.
Never commented before on UA-cam, but thought I would say what a great informative video that is. Also name checking Harry’s Garage a great move as he is super balanced! Thank you!
It's a shame that they don't combine their 3 litre diesel engines with electric motor in this. My 45e can only do below 25mpg running on the petrol engine only. Good car to use in town and to an extend it gets rid of the range anxiety of pure electric cars but the charging time for 40-50 miles of pure electric range is painful.
Why not a diesel hybrid is a common thought, I know I've had it, but diesel/batteries both add weight, diesel/electric are both costly, and diesel/electric engines both have excellent torque. So combining the two gives you a vehicle that costs more, weights more and the torque benefit of an ev is a bit wasted on a diesel. Plus all the smog equipment that comes with a diesel rather than a petrol. It's not that it couldn't work, but the financial case for manufacturers isn't there. The VW XL1 is about the only example I can think of where someone really tried a swing for the fences combining the two powertrains. At least when it's pure electric range was empty you could still count on around 130mpg.
@@jonathonalsop2120 Mercedes has a diesel hybrid though. You're right though, combining those two techs doesn't make sense, only using them separately sounds cool.
Great review Joe. A pleasure to watch. In regard to your comparison to the Range Rover P400e though the price you quote is for the full size Range Rover whereas the obvious comparison would be with the Sport which is less money than the figure you quote. X5 better overall though because of bigger battery & V6 3.0 engine.
thank you for your review, however what has put me off you say there is no fast charge, that's no good to me as i live well off the road, so i have to take it just down the road where there is FAST chargers, what's the point of setting it to a battery percentage when in fact its going to use more fuel i might as well get a proper engine X5 BMW, so BMW need to get with the program in the shape not all people have drive ways and home charging systems there is more people living well away from the road than there is living next to it you need to compare the iX1 BMW with the X5 45e as i might be looking at the iX1 and also FORD MACH-E premium, up to the GT or the other car I'm looking at is the monster Mercedes-Benz Eqc Estate, EQC 400 300KW AMG LINE PREMIUM 80KWH 5DR AUTO thank you, keep up the good reviews and have a nice day

My conclusion: As long as you charge at home the 45e has less fuel cons. then the 30D at all distancees below 300 km.
I have one. I get 85mpg from it ... on average! Astonishing car.
As always, an excellent and articulate review!
Thank you 👊
I run a bmw 530e and I can get 34 miles in electric and even with a number of long journeys I’m well over 100 mpg.
Very informative video Joe, Thanks. Looks like a panoramic roof is a must if you opt for a black interior, the interior is so dark inside without one.
My dad has a 30d black interior with no sunroof and yes it is very dark in the back seats.
great review, excellent explanation in your analysis on the MPGs. love your videos.keep up the good work you do thumbs up
Hi Joe, the 42 mile EV range seems fine for the 24kW battery. Once COVID is over, most Execs driving these to the office will have a charger, to fill the battery for their journey home. Charge at home overnight from a normal plug, no problem. Effectively providing an EV for the week, with the performance and range for the weekend. Seems perfect as a transition for now.
i bought a p45e and im getting nearly 1200 miles to the tank full.i use the car everyday and 85 % of my journeys are on electric only so in the real world they work very very well my range rover i was in the gas station every 7 days so im saving money all over
your channel is under rated. Looking forward to more content in the future! You remind me of Chris from the "newer" top gear.
Thank you buddy, appreciate the kind words! ♥️
Late viewing this episode - where these hydrids work is to charge at home on night tariff (typically 10p/kwhr). Meaning charge every night at home at cost of £2.40 for daily journey of approximately 40 miles. Great value if purchase price is ignored.
Keep safe.
Here we go again Joe!!! Always keeping us in know about literally all bmw's feel like they should hire you in marketing 😊, awesome work
I got mine a few months back and I absolutely love it
Setting the charge you desire to keep for as you said driving then slowly through London isn't a false eonomy at all, genuius actually. Means on the motorway at 70 mph your combustion engine is running at it's most efficient, and then in town, the more efficient electric powertrain kicks in where the combustion engine would be struggling at 15-20 mpg. Very clever, though amazed it isn't automated...! Great video.
Joe started to be one of my favourite car youtubers very quickly. Content is superb Joe !! Much love :)
Great to hear! A pan roof is a must in something like this on family duties 👌 Interesting to hear about your journeys too! Cheers
Good job. Can't wait until I get mine 2 weeks from now. Thanks
I have a 530e and love the hybrid feature. Never use gas while I'm running errands downtown (where I live).
Hi Jo we like Ur channel and content Ur reviews of cars is excellent u all keep safe well look forward to next video
Great video Joe, I really like these big X5's!! Sadly I couldn't afford one but I am happy with my X3 :)
Haha thank you Jason! Always lovely receiving positive feedback 👌
Great review. Really useful on the real world mpg, which I struggle to decide on next car whether to stick to diesel or a hybrid like this 45e.
Joe Achilles, best BMW Ambassador worldwide.
🤗🍷
Haha thank you, always loved the brand ♥️👊
Got one of these coming. Can’t wait for it now!
Engine tune and full bolt ons on that B58. 500 hp hybrid sounds interesting.
I own one and love it
Funnily enough I have a black G05 30d, I used the last coat start of last year and it’s been fantastic, still beading away
Even your sponsorship stuff is interesting!
Thank you :-)
Charging is in kW. Battery capacity in kWh. And you can only charge it at 3.7 kW, which is pretty slow compared to for example a Mercedes A250e. They offer you 7.4 kW and even DC fast-charging.
69 plate cayenne hybrid got 60mpg with a full charge on a 400 mile round trip
Great stuff as always Joe! Ordered one 2 weeks ago, delivery december. Its gonna be a long wait :)
Been a long time viewer Joe, your reviews/production quality keep getting better. Good job!
I appreciate that! Thank you :-)
I would throw the Lexus RX in. V6, best hybrid technology around, better looking, RX L is there of you want more space. Shame that Lexus infotainment sucks compared to iDrive, but will actually achieve 36mpg and is no doubt put together a bit better too.
Keep up the good work, I really enjoy watching your videos! Greetings from Berlin
nice review, also nice you named Harry with his Garage
You should try the 330e, it’s awesome. Much more sporty
Love the X5 45e 🤍
Got mine delivered on the 29th monster of a car... just gutted it’s a lease and will have to give it back in 4 years lol
i mean if you rly liked it cudve financed?
@@pastpixels-q2w business lease cuts about 40% off the payments each month so no brainer for me
I think the only problem with Hybrids is they could all do with doing more useful miles on EV or part EV to help on longer journeys using less fuel.
Why not a diesel hybrid, efficiency of a torquey diesel and hybrid tech for city/shops
It would definitely make more sense imo. But I guess many people see diesel as dirty and hence it doesn’t fit to a „clean“ hybrid. Even though it’s not really like that. If you don’t charge that X5 Hybrid, you’ll get worse fuel economy than a 40i
If they would get m50d plus this electric engien, the torque and power would go sky rocking. It would be twisting the earth.
@@Matwiej19 yeh that’d be amazing. Shame the 50d engines don’t pass the latest emissions laws and aren’t available anymore. Same with Audi‘s V8 TDI
@@Matwiej19 even the 30d engine with hybrid boost would be a monster.
Note the US version only 30 miles not 50 ev range but both made in South Carolina I think.
Mmm, interesting, thanks Joe, love it mpg is a joke then, got it.
Now that is a CAR!!!
Loving your content & how your channel has grown ...... your reviews I think are very good - well done 👏👏🙏
lol! Yes because luggage space is so much more important than reliability or electric-only range
I reckon Joe sold at least 100 extra cars for bmw uk, I know cuz I bought two bmws because of him
Haha thanks buddy! 🙏♥️
When you got in, don’t ask me why but I was expecting a rumble from the exhaust Joe 🙄
Haha I purposely set off in electric on this one, sorry to disappoint 😉
Amazingly only has 5 seats for such a monster size wise.
That is only hybrid which make sense for me. U got enough power, low tax kind off. Still if want to go and ski in Alps don't have to worry about charging it non stop. In thr future gonna change my x5 40d f15 for it.
The fuel economy is 217MPGe, where the e stands for equivalent. The WLTP drive is a short drive indeed.
Thanks for sharing Joe. Always love seeing your video's.
Love your BMW reviews Joe even though you are a BMW fan you are always completely impartial and I cant waitfor you to review an Alpina B3 as you love a performance wagon and for all I've seen so far from other reviewers I think you'd prefer the suspension set up.
Thanks Dave! Until ALPINA UK change, I won't have any on my channel unfortunately.
I have an x5 45e and your launch could have been improved even more by charging the battery at 100 and letting the boost gauge go to around 16-20 psi
Never commented before on UA-cam, but thought I would say what a great informative video that is. Also name checking Harry’s Garage a great move as he is super balanced! Thank you!
Thank you Guy, appreciate the kind words mate 👌
It's a shame that they don't combine their 3 litre diesel engines with electric motor in this. My 45e can only do below 25mpg running on the petrol engine only. Good car to use in town and to an extend it gets rid of the range anxiety of pure electric cars but the charging time for 40-50 miles of pure electric range is painful.
Yeah agree, the B57 3L Diesel in this would be perfection!
@@latlak Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen the GLC 300 de or C 300 de before. Charge ports are in an interesting/vulnerable position.
Cost for full battery charge?
USD 2 to 3 depending on where you live.
Another great video Joe as usual. Keep up the great content 👍🏻😀
New merc C class hybrid has twice the range of 330e, and it supports fast charging. BMW needs to catch up
Great review. Love to see a 545e review also
Great review Joe. A pleasure to watch. In regard to your comparison to the Range Rover P400e though the price you quote is for the full size Range Rover whereas the obvious comparison would be with the Sport which is less money than the figure you quote. X5 better overall though because of bigger battery & V6 3.0 engine.
Plus the P400e is only a 4-pot
thank you for your review, however what has put me off you say there is no fast charge, that's no good to me as i live well off the road, so i have to take it just down the road where there is FAST chargers, what's the point of setting it to a battery percentage when in fact its going to use more fuel i might as well get a proper engine X5 BMW, so BMW need to get with the program in the shape not all people have drive ways and home charging systems there is more people living well away from the road than there is living next to it you need to compare the iX1 BMW with the X5 45e as i might be looking at the iX1 and also FORD MACH-E premium, up to the GT or the other car I'm looking at is the monster Mercedes-Benz Eqc Estate, EQC 400 300KW AMG LINE PREMIUM 80KWH 5DR AUTO thank you, keep up the good reviews and have a nice day
Yeah mpg makes sense since vast majority of daily driving is under 40 miles, so you're going to use a shitload less gasoline on a yearly basis.
