This was from the late 60s. Every teacher should hope their students would feel this way about them. Great movie if you ever get a chance to see it. Sidney Poitier was a wonderful actor.
Lulu began her career in the UK before becoming internationally known. She had a big hit with the song "To Sir With Love" from the 1967 film, which she also starred in with Sidney Poitier. She also did the title song to the 1974 James Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun". She also did the songs "Boom Bang-a-Bang", "Shout", "Leave A Little Love", "Try To Understand", "The Boat That I Row", "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby)", "I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do)" etc. Lulu was married at one time to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.
You need to watch the movie to truly appreciate the impact of this song. Not mention seeing the late Sidney Poitier in action. You will cry. Guaranteed.
Lulu was one of the Best Singers in the 60's. To Sir With Love was the theme and title song in Sidney Poitier's movie "To Sir With Love" About a Black teacher goes a British school to teach and find himself in a classroom with wild untamed teens and eventually he straightens them out but it was a struggle. Lulu plays one of those teens.....and when the kids are about to graduate.....she sings this song!!!!! Lulu becomes an overnight success and starts her solo career with several hits.
You must see Lulu singing To Sir With Love on American Idol. She blew the roof off the building. Mind you this was 40 years later. She still has a powerful voice. The movie and the song is a classic by a classy lady.
There was a movie starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu called “To Sir, With Love” which is movie about a teacher who inspires young students back in the 60’s.
1967 "To Sir with Love", "In the Heat of the Night", and "Guess who's Coming to Dinner" three movies that help change America. RIP Sidney Poitier (LuLU was married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees)
"Sir" is Sidney Poitier. He played the role of a teacher hired to teach kids from the wrong side of the tracks in London. Lulu plays one of his students. "To Sir with Love" is a wonderful movie.
Title song from the wonderful 1967 movie starring Sidney Poitier as a devoted teacher & his effect on students from England's lower working class. About class distinctions, learning self respect & respect for others. Lulu played one of the students. I was about 12 when the movie came out. The song still brings tears to my eyes. The film is so worthwhile, you should watch it (probably streaming somewhere!).💙☮💙
Lulu is a treasure. This song gets me every time. Already a beautiful song, it really hit home after I saw the film 'To Sir, With Love' featuring Lulu and Sidney Poitier. She was featured on the British comedy series, 'Absolutely Fabuoous'. She played herself in more than one episode, and clearly is having fun lampooning her fame, and yet in on the joke.
I watched this movie so many times with my late father that it has become one of my all time favorites and I remember he used to play the '45 record of this (which I still have to this day) all the time. Sidney acted 'unbelievable' in this movie. I would call it a 'must watch' movie. Such good memories of long ago. Thanks and keep smiling ✌😊
Wonderful reaction to Lulu! When I listen to her I can not help but think of another iconic British singer named Dusty Springfield. Her song 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' was a massive hit around the same time this song was out. She was dynamic. Later, Cher made it a hit again. You would love her voice. There is a B&W live version of it on UA-cam.
The live performances are magical, Lulu was born to sing that song! it’s interesting the way the drums shift and drive the chorus in an ascending fashion until it crescendos in “ to Sir with Love”. it’s so simple, but utterly brilliant.
You're right Asia it's from 1967. This is from the movie starring the late Sir Sidney Poitier, To Sir with love. Lulu starred in the movie, as a student. Guys you must watch this beautiful inspirational movie. It's a classic. Then this song will really make sense. RIP Sidney Poitier 🌹
Lulu is from Scotland or raised there. Terrific voice! Was a mentor on American idol a few years ago. This was a huge hit. Was married to one on the Beegees for a time. If you want to see her range check out OH ME OH MY, one of my favorite songs ever. She's still performing in her 70s, sounds great.
1967 movie: To Sir With Love, starring Sidney Potier who played the teacher in the movie. The song is the movie title song and the song is for the teacher. Lulu is Scottish, but began her career in the 1960's in the United Kingdom (UK) and she also acted in this movie. Here she is in 1999 with Paul McCartney singing on British TV. He had a song out Brown Eye Handsome Man, which was a remake of an old Chuck Berry song. ua-cam.com/video/D0YacZ9xH_A/v-deo.html
This is most definitely one of the greatest movies ever. You have to watch the movie to really understand the love these students had for Sir. The other movie worth watching is "Lillies of the Field". Sir Sidney Poitier will be missed. R.I.P.
It's kind of great that the talent of artists like Lulu get some attention through the passing of another artist like Sidney Poitier. I was 11 when the film "To Sir With Love" came out, and it's still holds up as a film that has a lot to say about class and race...
Apologies if someone already said this: This song is from the film “To Sir With Love,” 1967. It stars Sidney Poitier as a new teacher coming in midway through the year into an inner city London school full of poor and out of control kids everyone has given up on. The kids are mostly White and Poitier is their new Black teacher, it was a time in the UK where there was a lot of violent racism. The kids are horrible to “Sir,” they are racist, they threaten him etc… But he persists and doesn’t give up on them. It starts t have an effect on the kids who have never had anyone care about them or assume they could accomplish something. Lulu plays one of the students and Sir helps her discover an interest in learning and she shows her the courage to not be afraid to admit she is smart. At the graduation party, the kids give Sir a gift and surprise him with Lulu singing this song to him… I’m tearing up writing this… The film is wonderful. As a half Black half White kid, my mum made me watch it when I was a kid and it had a big effect on me.
LULU was married to Maurice Gibb (BeeGee) and performed in 1969 at Eurovision Song Contest representing the United Kindom. She was also known for helping Neil Diamond by being one of the first singers to record his compositions.
My mom introduced me to this movie when I was younger. It is one of her favorite movies of all time. It’s extremely difficult to find this movie. Great reaction! RIP Sidney Poitier The movie is based in 1960’s London.
To Sir, With Love is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. It had such an impact on me and of course this song and LuLu's voice just ties the whole thing together.
It’s a old movie. Sidney pointer was in. This song she sings to him will bring tears to your eyes. Sidney is a teacher in the movie. He takes a bunch of misfits and makes them great and LuLu sings this to him at the end of the movie. I think you can find the movie on Amazon prime. Movie name is To Sir With Love. It’s a great movie.
Thank you fam you made aunties day. "To sir with love" is a movie starring Sidney Poitier (first Haitian) to win an Academy Award. Sidney Poitier played a teacher in the movie who taught a class of unruly/juvenile delinquent/British students. The students in the film called/referred to Poitier (teacher/character as Sir, hence the title of both the song/movie "To sir with love".Lulu who is a musician, but played one of the students in the film. Lulu wrote/sang the title song to Poitier as a tribute/thank you for lessons taught, in and out of the classroom. Love. Love. Love, this reaction reminiscent of my teenage years. 🤎🤎🤎🖤🖤🖤
Love the reaction Asia and BJ to this Lulu song from an equally good movie. If you want to see how Lulu's music evolved from Pop to RnB/Soul, you should react to "If I Were You". It's a banger. Here's a cool fact, Lulu was once married to Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees 😃
They were the kids that had been kicked out from other schools. The one teachers had mostly given up on. He took the time to get to know them ,to understand them. To help them and guide them in growing up. He was firm but caring. He earned the kids respect and love. It is one of my favorite movies !
Sir was Sidney Poitier, their new teacher, they dogged him at first, then he got thru to them, you know how when you know someone is trying to do the best FOR YOU, you have to give in.
To sir with love is one of my favorite songs of all times it is from a major movie from 1967 called to sir with love starring the recently late legendary actor Sidney Poitier. Lulu also stared in the movie and is a magnificent singer I love her. A suggestion is that you check out her album of the same title to sir with love and she does have a live video of her singing this song . She also had a song out in the 90s that I think you will really enjoy too called I'm back for more.
*PLEASE* watch the video of her singing with scenes from the 1967 film "To Sir With Love" starring Sidney Poitier who just passed. Even more poignant than just the lyrics, y'all!
Asia and B.J. You just have to see the movie “ To Sir With Love”. It is an absolute classic! Sidney Poitier was great in every role he played. But he was superb in this! I think I’ve seen it over 200 times and it still brings tears to my eyes!
This great song was released in 1967. One of my favorite singers ever! OH ME OH MY is great I hope you react to it She's from Scotland. Someone I knew mom was her neighbor in Scotland.
You've got to watch this movie. A classic....Next level shit. About a Black teacher in a rough school in London, who more or less becomes like family to his students.
Beautiful song from a great movie. I think it was one of Poitier's best performances. The movie is the same name To Sir, with Love. Loved your reactions. Have loved this song since I first saw the movie on TV back in the early 70s. Glad the shortness of the song didn't scare you away. Lulu was incredible in this song. I know she recorded others, but I'm not familiar with them. Peace!
This song comes from a movie by the same name, To Sir With Love, starring late actor Sidney Poitier. In the 1967 movie Sidney portrays a teacher to a bunch of rowdy teens in London, England. Initially, they dislike him and go to great lengths to give him a hard time. However, over time, they get to know and love him. They call him Sir in the movie and their respect for him grows richly as he teaches them about life, growth, humanity etc... Lu Lu the singer, is actually in the movie . She jumps on stage and starts singing this to him in the very end. She has the red, short hair, 1 red earring and is wearing a red/white dress. Great movie.
Asia and BJ, This hit is from the film, "To Sir With Love" starring the late Sidney Poitier. The film and song were breakout hit's in 1967. The song was at No. 1 for 5 weeks in the U.S. and No.1 around the world.. And the film was the biggest film for that year. Not bad for a film that had no publicity from the film company and film critic's did'nt like it. Around the world it became this "Hit," just by word of mouth. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Asia & BJ, You guys have to take out some time to watch this classic movie "To Sir With Love," because not only is it an amazing movie starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu, but it will give you an even fuller understanding of this wonderful song!!! Thank you guys for this reaction, it is much appreciated!!!
you should have watched the original video from the Film of the same name, starring the Late Sidney Poitier in the Lead role as the Teacher in 60/70s UK.Lulu's biggest Hit was "Shout" completely different
I believe in England they called their teachers sir and mam. And this was mid to late 60s. Now that you have heard the song. Find the movie to sir with love with Sidney pointier. It’s a fantastic movie ive watched it for years and their is still points where i cry.
Another couple of Scottish female singers you should listen to Barbara Dickson ( Caravan /January February )Lena Zavaroni (Mama ) Sheena Easton ( For your eyes only )Lena Martell ( One day at a time ) Susan Boyle ( I dreamed a dream ) Amy McDonald ( This is life ) Annie Lennox ( Sweet dreams )Eddi Reader ( Perfect ) Kelly Marie ( Feels like i'm in love )Maggie Bell ( Hazell ) Sharleen Spiteri ( Texas ) ( I don't want a lover ) Sally Carr ( Middle of the road )( Soley Soley )
Still processing our losing King Poitier. Do yourselves a big favor and watch the movie with the same title, which stars them both. The legend Dionne Warwick was on Colbert a few nights ago, and recounted that when she first saw him, in NYC, she stalked him... until one day he turned to her and said: "Can I help you, little girl?" She said that he would go on asking that all the rest of his life. May his beautiful soul rest forever in peace.
It's from the 60s. From the movie of the same name 1967. She was a British singer and also played one of the students in the movie. The film starred Sidney Poitier. The film took place in England, and he played a teacher who was sent to a school in a tough area. The kids were rough on teachers. They learned about about life and how to improve their chances from Sir (which is what they called him. It is a great film, and you should definitely give it a look. Here is a video showing some clips of the film and the theme song is playing. The girl with the shortish red hair and the purple top is Lulu. ua-cam.com/video/EV1qmmMwc9M/v-deo.html
I love this song, the fantastic voice of Lulu, who also wrote the song I think, and the movie, “To Sir, With Love.” It might be that Lulu’s character in the movie writes the song she sings as a tribute to their teacher, Sir. As I recall, he taught them to have the respect to use “Sir” as his name. I’m *sooo glad* you watched this video first. The video using clips of the movie is good, but it distracts from the gorgeousness of Lulu’s voice.
I would suggest watching this movie To Sir with Love. This movie is from the 60's and Lulu is also in the movie. I think you would really enjoy it. Cheers
This was the film from 1967 Lulu is the young girl in the Purple Top with the roll Kneck watch her sing this song on American Idol I think in 2011 it's on youtube she is an outstanding Scotish singer.
My family immigrated from Scotland & when I was watching this movie on tv as a teen my mother informed me my aunt (her younger sister) dated the drummer from Lulu’s band.
Watch the movie To Sir With Love. One of the great movies.Lu Lu was once married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. They remained friends until his death.
This was done in 1967 from the film To Sir With Love. Sidney Poitier stared in this film about a Black Teacher in an English small town who never had a Black Teacher before and at first they didn’t warm up to him right away, but by the end of the school year he mad a huge impact on the Students. They called him Sir and the song was basically a letter written to him by the students. In fact Lu Lu was in it as well, and she sang the song in the film. It’s a great movie, so check it out.
Definitely watch the movie. The song will have so much more meaning. This song ran through my head as my dad was dying."but how do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume". 😢 Beautiful song from mid 60's.
Great movie and great song! I was mesmerized by Sydner Poiteir's acting in this movie. But he's great in all his movies. My Dad met him on the dock where we kept our boat in my hometown just south of Detroit. When he told me this, I was so disappointed that I wasn't there to meet him!
60s and it was from a film of the time. The star was Sidney Poitier. Lulu was a kid when she sang it but became famous in her own right. Sang a Bond song
Everytime I hear this song, takes me back to the scene in the movie and I always cry cause can relate to leaving Primary school and going on to Secondary school. We had a Sir that was similar to Sidney Poitier in the movie.
60’s To Sir With Love was the title of the film and the theme song. She also costarred in the film with Sidney Poitier and sang it to him at the end of the movie. All I know is she was a famous British pop star and actress.
I LOVE this movie and Sidney Poitier, the actor, is a GREAT (and handsome) actor! You need to watch the film. The song and the movie is about growing up and how the teacher, "Sir", helped the students mature! ❤❤❤
LuLu, pop singer from England. This was the title song from the 60’s movie, To Sir With Love. Sydney Poitier plays a new teacher to a class of unruly students. He finally gets through to the kids , earns their respect, and this is LuLu singing to him and thanking him. Good movie from late 60’s.
TERRIFIC reaction! Another really good song by her is Oh Me, Oh My(I'm A Fool For You Baby). She was married to Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees for a short time. I TRULY think you would really enjoy Oh Me, Oh My.
Really good movie starting the highly respected actor Sidney Poitier. When she does this song in the movie it’s chest tightening time. You gotta see it.
The first film was in the 60’s and was about a London based school. They then released To Sir with Love 2 in 1996 and that was based in an American school, Lulu sand the song again and it was just as good
I remember watching that made-for-TV sequel when it originally aired. I found the actors playing Mark Thackery's students in the Chicago high school were not as likeable as the classroom cast from swinging 60s London.
You have to watch the movie to understand this song, Lulu not only was also in the movie she sang this at the end… she also was dating Robin Gibb of the BeeGees at the time this movie was made
RIP Sidney Poitier. This was one of his best performances and Lulu's theme song fits the film so perfectly.
Check out "Lilies of the field" Was my Grandma's favorite. Great movie.
@@glassontherocks It’s a masterpiece, just like To Sir With Love and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. He was such an incredible actor.
AND "LULU" is also one of the students IN the movie "TO SIR, WITH LOVE"
This was from the late 60s. Every teacher should hope their students would feel this way about them. Great movie if you ever get a chance to see it. Sidney Poitier was a wonderful actor.
Been teaching nearly 40 years now--still waiting for a class to break into this on the last day :-D
@@johnharkness7114 I hope it happens for you.
@@johnharkness7114 Aww, I truly hope u got this honor in song also.
Most don't care about it anymore. All they want is to push their academic WOKE non-sense into the kids minds.

Let's not also forget that she won Eurovision!
You need to watch the movie to truly appreciate the impact of this song. Not mention seeing the late Sidney Poitier in action. You will cry. Guaranteed.
Our wonderful Lulu from Scotland. One of the most underrated voices ever. So lovely to see you were able to appreciate her. Great reaction.

Wow! That's something I didn't know!
Maurice had one of THE GREATEST voices in Pop of all time! 🤟
Don't forget "Lillies of the Field". Sidney Poitier won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in this film. The very first black man to win an Oscar!
"Sir" is Sidney Poitier. He played the role of a teacher hired to teach kids from the wrong side of the tracks in London. Lulu plays one of his students. "To Sir with Love" is a wonderful movie.
I was just about 10 years old when this movie came out. I love this song and her voice is a treasure of the UK.

You have got to se this film! The song perfectly describes the film. Sidney Poitier did an outstanding performance.
LULU ,from Scotland had her first big hit aged 15 with SHOUT , STILL PERFORMING STILL CAN SING.
It's a great movie. Sidney played a new teacher in a tough school. He taught the kids to respect each other and in turn they learned to respect him.

As a matter of fact.

From one of my favorite films (late 1960s). Lulu plays a student and Sir (Sidney Poitier) is her teacher. :)
My family immigrated from Scotland & when I was watching this movie on tv as a teen my mother informed me my aunt (her younger sister) dated the drummer from Lulu’s band.
Finally this is getting responses!!! What a gem! What a song...and ohhh what a movie!
Watch the movie To Sir With Love. One of the great movies.Lu Lu was once married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. They remained friends until his death.
Beautiful 55 year old number by this wonderful singer. To Sir with love, made the world sit up and notice Sidney Poitier a great actor. 👍🤗
Thank You, GREAT Song and GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Iconic movie. You would really enjoy seeing lulu sing this song at the end of the film.
This was #1 in the USA in 1967. Her second biggest US hit has a similar groove: "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)".
The beautiful swinging sixties where a lot of different genres started from and beautiful music reigned.
Everytime I hear this song, takes me back to the scene in the movie and I always cry cause can relate to leaving Primary school and going on to Secondary school. We had a Sir that was similar to Sidney Poitier in the movie.
To sir with love is a movie with Sydney Portier.
60’s
To Sir With Love was the title of the film and the theme song.
She also costarred in the film with Sidney Poitier and sang it to him at the end of the movie.
All I know is she was a famous British pop star and actress.
I Love THIS Song! and I Love THE Movie TO SIR WITH LOVE #RIP Sidney Poitier
Huge hit in the early 60’s. From the movie To Sir With Love starring the great Sidney Poitier.❤❤❤❤
She's from Scotland not England
Lulu was 100% Scottish definitely not English🏴
TERRIFIC reaction! Another really good song by her is Oh Me, Oh My(I'm A Fool For You Baby). She was married to Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees for a short time. I TRULY think you would really enjoy Oh Me, Oh My.
IF you guys haven't seen the file, "To Sir, With Love" get on it. Great performance by the amazing Sydney Poitier
This is an excellent movie .. and the music is great too.
The bass in this song has always stood to me the most in this song.
Wow !, a very soft haunting type voice,
love it. Canada
Lulu had a seriously soulful voice...BTW, Miss Asia, you got some pipes, Baby Girl! (in my best 'old auntie' voice) you can sang, gull!
Lulu also did a Neil Diamond song called The Boat That I Row. 1967.
Good teachers are the best! They change lives. Shout out to Mrs. Fulgham! 6th grade.
From the movie, to sir with love, I love this beautiful gentleman
Really good movie starting the highly respected actor Sidney Poitier. When she does this song in the movie it’s chest tightening time. You gotta see it.
LULU,"TOO SIR,WITH LOVE"... FROM THE CLASSIC MOVIE TOO SIR WITH LOVE. STARRING SYDNEY POITIER.. 1967...
Great movie…. To Sir With Love… watch it if you can
The first film was in the 60’s and was about a London based school.
Look into “Oh me, Oh my (I,m A Fool For You) “ by Lulu. So much depth and soul from the UK in the late 60‘s.
The movie is a absolute tear jerker, Lulu is the redhead student in Sir’s class. Classic film.
Lulls is from Scotland UK big hits in the 60s she did another amazing song called shout check that song out
You have to watch the movie to understand this song, Lulu not only was also in the movie she sang this at the end… she also was dating Robin Gibb of the BeeGees at the time this movie was made
There is a live one of her singing this a few years ago.
