But then she crossed the line that nobody wanted her to cross, even though Miles begged her to stop. She incinerated the Mona Lisa.

    • @brennkinn
      @brennkinn Місяць тому +13

Helen strongly embodied the premise of the social disruptors theory that Blanc pointed out Miles had only a very superficial understanding of (hence it turning into word salad coming out of Miles). The social disruptors theory, at least as I studied it in a couple feminist theory courses in the late seventies early eighties (I took the full four years+ :) , held that effective and lasting social change can be created only through the actions of social disruptors.
A basic summary of the idea, at least as I understood from classes I took a little over 40 years ago (so I may have also forgotten a bit of it), was that social advancement couldn't just be given by the patriarchy or majority. (It would be just like the early treaties with native Americans, early promises and token allowances that are worthless in the end. True change required disruptors to get in the patriarchy/majority's face, deconstruct the pretty trappings, and show the reality behind the truth, even at the risk of their own lives and even where their own friends, families, and partners don't want the disruptors to take the risk.
Miles' biggest element of totally misunderstanding the disruptors theory is that it's not that the friends, families, and partners don't want the change...it's that they understand what they have to lose upto and including the life of their loved one (aka the disruptors) and upon those losses can be catalyzed to continue the change. (Although that also pulls in a couple of other social theories, but I think it's safely established that Miles is probably ignorant of those, also.
The theme is heavily implied throughout the movie with a fairly decent balance of elements that are 'off' that clues you in to more going on behind the scenes without spoon-feeding us the blatant and heavy handed 'look at our strong female character (ala gi Jane, Ellen Ripley, supergirl) who's going to take down the bad guy' trope that even old feminists like myself have gotten tired of.
I think Blanc's final declaration, "Disruption", to the hippy, whom he'd probably evacuated after 'reminding' Helen of why her sister walked away, to me had that sort of preaching to the choir tone to the hippy whom obviously agreed., and maybe a bit of a 'schooling you' tone in response to Miles denial. I can almost imagine him saying, "Now, that's a disruption, son," in his foghorn leghorn drawl.

5:01 everyone in the call is a legend with connections to murder mysteries.
    1. Stephen Sondheim (who sadly died shortly after his Cameo was filmed). In addition to being one of the greatest Broadway composers of all time, wrote an iconic mystery movie called "The Last of Sheila".
Side note, you should TOTALLY react to The Last of Sheila.
    2. Angela Lansbury: Star of the iconic TV show Murder She Wrote... And also the OG Mrs. Lovett in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd
    3. Natasha Lyonne stars in Rian Johnson's mystery TV show called Poker Face. Which is a fantastic but underrated show.
    4. Kareem Abdul Jabbar wrote a book series about Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock Holmes' older brother)
I literally squealed when I saw those cameos.
Also, the dude who talked to Birdie about the music box is the legendary concert cellist Yo-yo Ma.

Same when Benoit Blanc screams "Helen" when we first see her being shot, I thought there was a mistake. I wasn't familiar with Janelle Monae so I thought maybe the actresse's name was Helen, or maybe Daniel Craig blurted out the wrong name by accident, and it slipped through the editing and what not. You called it. Within a few minutes the group learned that Andi was dead and that Miles had murdered her, and learned the Miles had deliberately murdered Duke. Even then no one (not even Duke's girlfriend Whiskey) would speak out against Miles until the Mona Lisa was burned and their gravy train was gone for sure. They started out backing Miles against Andi in court and ended up all ready to protect him against murder charges.
FWIW, the movie was written and filmed before Elon Musk bought Twitter, and so Miles character was not directly based on him. He was intended to be a mash-up of "internet millionaires" including Musk but also Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and several others. Musk just happened to be the most visible of the idiot billionaire genre when the movie was released.

The only exception is that I also thought Miles was an idiot very early on but I couldn't tell if the film knew that or not. Big congratulations to Edward Norton. It has been a while since I found a character that irritating and a lot was down to his excellent performance.

If you like murder mysteries, there are a few recent ones with Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's detective! Recently they made the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and A haunting in Venice. They're fun too! There's also an older TV series with Hercule Poirot, adapted from the many novels and short stories. It's also a lot of fun but probably too many episodes for a youtube channel. I recommend you watch those in your free time though, David Suchet is great as Hercule Poirot and the episodes can even be found on youtube!

    Regarding Bond -
NO SPOILERS and as vague as I can
Each era of Bond is a little different; but Craig’s is unique among the others.
The rest vaguely imply its the same character over the first 40 years of films (and a kind of sliding timeline for the character’s age) - but Craig’s era introduces a new way of depicting the character.
If you’re enjoying Daniel Craig in these movies and considering more, the Bond movies with him should be among those, yes 💙💙

Your reactions are awesome, and it's so satisfying how much you're able to pick up on!
The Bond movies are hit and miss, but I'd say start with Casino Royale, and keep watching them until you stop enjoying them lol
If you want another great murder mystery that happens to share more than one cast member with Knives Out, I recommend Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011 version, Dir. by David Fincher). A warning though: in terms of tone, this is no Knives Out. It contains some very dark themes and graphic imagery. A very satisfying mystery to chew on, though.
For some pre-007 Craig action, you could check out Layer Cake, a British crime thriller with some dark comedy sprinkled in.
That reminds me of another under-appreciated movie I think you'd like based on your other reactions. Stardust (2007), which shares a Director with Layer Cake. It's a fun, light-hearted fantasy story, and it's one of those movies that will have you asking "who is NOT in this?"

My favourite part about the box at the start is that no one in the group actually solves any of the puzzles, they all get help from outsiders despite supposedly being special. Duke's mom to open the box, Yo-Yo Ma(fucking lol) for the fugue, Claire's husband for the chess puzzle, etc etc. The only character that does solve the box (though in their own way) is Helen, by smashing it open, also proving that the box is a bunch of random crap that actually has a *very* simple solution.
