It's not about the drinks being "stronger" lol, it's about the person who illegally distilled the alcohol not properly removing the methanol that's produced. Methanol poisonings like happened all the time in the west when homemade/bootleg alcohol distilling was more common.

No, in SE Asia they have a very bad habit of mixing methanol in already bootleg booze. Most spirits need imported to that part of the world, thus they're very expensive, so outside the posh hotels and restaurants, they water down drinks using this stuff. They've done it for decades. Always stick to beer in these countries because beer is cheap and it isn't worth their time watering it down further. I never touch spirits or cocktails in these countries. Russian roulette.
