    So the problem happen in Laos but at the end the reporter basically said it’s ‘dangerous’ to travel to South East Asia and made a report in Thailand instead of Laos like Thailand and South East Asia also have to be responsible in this incident that happen in Laos? Why over generalizing? Like if bad things happen to Asian tourists in France, should we also blame UK and all Europe? And imagine reporter also make a report from UK instead of France where the incident happen.

      I remember being warned by someone about the whisky in Thailand and south east asia when I travelled there several times in the early 90s. Some brands were deemed not fit for human consumption by the WHO, it was alleged. Some labels have made numbers of locals go blind, they said. I was fine on the sangthip whisky or singha beer though.

      Improperly distilling alcohol can cause this. Methanol and Ethanol are created together when making liquor, but the Methanol has to be heated to "cook off" as a gas. As the old saying goes, if you don't cook off the methanol you get deathanol.

    Ok let’s be real here.
    I’m a Thai citizen. My advice to foreigners coming to Thailand is that your safety is your own safety. Unless the government tries to regulate the safety standards of everything, you have to take it into your own hands. This means that you should not ever try to think of the safety standards here as high as you might have been used to in your own country. We learnt that since time immemorial that this is something we need to care for ourselves.
    The scene in Kaosan RD is like a red light district here, so people who go there know full well why they go there. The majority of Thais do not go there. It’s a part of Thailand that exists, but it should not in anyway describe the whole country.
    I used to go to Vang Vieng once like ten or so years ago with friends from the uni, but I got very bad food poisoning so I spent the only night there resting in the accommodation we stayed for that night.
    It is easy to enjoy life here, but you need to be discriminating and discerning. Accidents can happen any time and anywhere (e.g., in your country, in other countries, in Laos, or in Thailand ), so you should take precautions even when you’re vacationing.
    Lastly, I’m so terribly sorry for all these lovely people who are gone too soon. May they all rest in peace, and my heart goes to their beloved families and friends in this very difficult time.

    Symptoms of methanol poisoning are very similar to those of excess alcohol consumption ( central nervous system depression, headache, dizziness, nausea, lack of coordination, and confusion) so many who have ingested lethal doses (as little as 15 mL) of methanol may not seek immediate treatment, thinking they are simply intoxicated. Best prevention? Avoid alcohol consumption. Second best solution? Only drink from sealed, labeled containers preferably sold by established producers.

    • @stanbrackhage
      @stanbrackhage 3 дні тому +16

      methanol is a by-product of distilling ethanol (the "safe" alcohol). The first few volumes of the distilled alcohol contain mostly methanol and need to be disposed of. This is why it is illegal in a lot of places to distill your own alcohol. Because people arent careful enough or dont know how to rid the product of the methanol. Incidentally, one of the treatments for methanol poisoning is to give someone a lot of ethanol (basically get them super drunk). This counteracts the toxicity of methanol which causes blindness and nerve damage. It is very sad and preventable to lose these beautiful young people to such a careless event, but more than likely it was not done intentionally or maliciously, and my guess is the owner of that hostel got his hands on some liquor he thought was a great deal but it turned out to be poison.

  • @Rosskles
    @Rosskles 3 дні тому +238

    Unfortunately it's an extremely common occurrence. It's well known that cheap booze in poorer countries has more methanol and sometimes a dangerous amount. For Americans; 30 ml = 1 oz. and 25 ml = .85 oz To put that in comparison to what we're used to when you got a bar here the standard pour is 1.5 oz - 2 oz.(45 ml - 60 ml). 1.) Poor or developing countries do not have yet food security check that is done so strictly
    2.) Learn from this incident and very relieved to see people are living. Tourism generates economic and cultural income and I am sure when Laos is deserted, the government will take action to address the root cause.
    3.) I do hope this is not going to happen in Indonesia nation wide. Our government should strengthen the law on food checking in all the food stores and sources and socialising on food safety. This is the basic need of human beings.
