Ironic that you mention that - I remember that the last manually-switched phone call in Ireland was made in 1987 - heard it on the news around about the time this tune was in the charts. What a great tune - have it on my playlist.
Putting 2p coins in the public phone, probably while trying to keep warm in the red phone box on a cold night and trying to avoid what the drunkards had left in there - another of those fine experiences still familiar in the earlier parts of the 80s.
The smell of stale urine in the booth, but also on the receiver mouthpiece, was an essential component of the British phone box experience circa 1970s/80s.
@@steelwheel-i3s Ew,well I was familiar with trying to cope with that smell in the booth, just didn't notice any of it on the receiver thankfully. Hopefully the strong smell in the booth wasn't masking it. Some people - animals, they were!
What a tune! Instantly transports me to a summer job I had in 1987 fixing lawnmowers and other small engines in a workshop in Galway. There were two of us in the workshop. Whenever this tune was played, my mate would turn the workshop radio volume to the max. I have this on my playlist and am instantly transported to that happy place whenever I hear it. Amazing how music evokes such memories!
SOD will always be one of the greatest underrated bands and Kirk the greatest underrated songwriters of all time Heres to you all who all recognise greatness
Weird how you stubble on a song decades later and can sing along to every word. Kudos to youtube for letting this happen and Kirk and the band for the song/tune. Truly a classic
I'm going through the 80s very slowly (because I don't have the spare time to do it more quickly) and have reached the spring of 1987 so I'm playing and hearing this song for the first since maybe the late 80s,at latest the early or mid-90s!
Remember when this came out when I was a teenager.Used to play it to death and always the last bit when it went super loud.Such a cool song to this day!
TheCrackWilliams just leaving navy same time , med dis.. 5 Royal Marines in med dis with me... brilliant not giving a fuck times with brilliant tunes and 5 pure British warriors...respect my bro...✌️👍❤️
I want to be clear. After 2 years RMR and 1 knee op I joined in Oct 88 and by Jan had lost my ACL so went into the RN where I stayed for 22 years. Never forgot my short time at CTC though.
Theatre of hate,Spear of Destiny,Kirk Brandon,Stan stammers et al. Used to follow them back in the 80’s (forever) and still catch them when I can. Kirk still has that stage presence and amazing voice. Under rated as he was better than most 80’s singers
love the power of kirk brandon when he sings this he and the spear of destiny they should have been much bigger!! liked him way back from do you believe in westworld i was 15 then better times for sure.
takes me back to my misspent youth !!!! god i loved this track , he played in a small pub in nuneaton the other day , only saw the advert after the fact .... shame i'd liked to have seen them again , but then again maybe better to remember as was
I was playing this on the NAAFI's video jukebox in Bassingbourne Barracks in 86/87. Over and over and over. Loved it then, love it now. Timeless. Thanks for the upload.
Simply brilliant. Spear of Destiny was one of these bands that i never got started listening to before now, but one of the bands i knew i probably would like. Kirk Brandon & Co. are superb. I regret that I didn`t got into their music earlier.
seen em back in the day at York Festival... Holy hell!! LIBERATOR!! Grew up with this band through transition.. from Theatre of hate to spear of Destiny.. And , for me 'The train" is seminal!! Who would have thought that someone would compose such a tune regarding the Tay Bridge Disaster"' I'm a Dundonian and this blew me away! LEGION!!!
York was a shite day, cops taking drink off you and pouring down the drain, my wrap of speed blown away in the wind. Bunnymen rocked cops stank kirk was awesome ;-)
Fantastic! Thanks for uploading this. Classic song. Overlooked by many at the time because you have to hear the whole track to appreciate it. Was in the 'top-teens' if memory serves...
@GaryGuevara thats correct , u2, world party, spear of destiny, pretenders, i was there also with two mates from school that i just left, we travelled from crawley in sussex, what a concert, what a line up, timeless, greatest times.

Quality.
Weird how you stubble on a song decades later and can sing along to every word. Kudos to youtube for letting this happen and Kirk and the band for the song/tune. Truly a classic
100% I haven't heard this in decades and here I am singing away with it, word by word. This is One Big Song from my younger days.
I'm going through the 80s very slowly (because I don't have the spare time to do it more quickly) and have reached the spring of 1987 so I'm playing and hearing this song for the first since maybe the late 80s,at latest the early or mid-90s!

The way it builds up in the later part is great.
Love it when the dark sound kicks in towards the end of the song and they turn in to the sisters of mercy
Thompson twins oh don't you cry for me...
Me too I play air guitar 😂❤
Oh the sisters wish they sounded like the end of this!!!
Kirk is one of the good guys. What a career. He’s all about the music - not the money
Yep, awesome guy. And a hell of a live performer.
I totally agree, seen Spear of destiny a few times, never fail to please. Very talented and very under rated.
And a lovely chap. Always has time to say hello after a gig.
Nostalgia.. I loved the music nobody else listened to growing up
I joined the Royal Marines in 1987 - this song was played constantly in the Naafi bar, great memories!
Half and half pint of milk and fresh orange please love. Joined in 88
TheCrackWilliams just leaving navy same time , med dis.. 5 Royal Marines in med dis with me... brilliant not giving a fuck times with brilliant tunes and 5 pure British warriors...respect my bro...✌️👍❤️
Nice!
I joined the Army in 86 and when I got to the Battalion in 87 it was always on in the NAFI
I want to be clear. After 2 years RMR and 1 knee op I joined in Oct 88 and by Jan had lost my ACL so went into the RN where I stayed for 22 years. Never forgot my short time at CTC though.

This was my anthem in the 80s
Whenever I feel like that , this is the one that stands me back up
This was our anthem as well as 17 year olds. Much missed days.
I used to sometimes be alone on the dance floor at a place called SUBJECTS on Prestwich Street in Cape Town when this song played.
Then you must remember The Stage and The Playground too...Forever in a Daisy 🎉
...this is how I dressed in the late eighties. Loved the image. Right down to the hair...
That Bass line!!! Absolutely brilliant. I still rate this as a classic
The choral swell....spinechilling
love the power of kirk brandon when he sings this he and the spear of destiny they should have been much bigger!! liked him way back from do you believe in westworld i was 15 then better times for sure.
Me too exactly!
@@agemoth thanks for the comment lorraine it is one of those overlooked hits of the 80s and kirk was under rated he was a looker as well.

Wow what a tune Great song writer Kirk Brandon !!!!
One of the original Goth bands.awsome, sounds great in 2024.
Never a goth band pal
Spear of destiny were definitely not a goth band!!!!
Rock band...but some Goths seemed to get this a little confused at the time...prolly cos they are dark sounding?
Simply brilliant. Spear of Destiny was one of these bands that i never got started listening to before now, but one of the bands i knew i probably would like.
Kirk Brandon & Co. are superb. I regret that I didn`t got into their music earlier.
Could still pull this off today, absolutely brilliant track... Saw these back in the early 80's, CLASS
