Julius Caesar actually makes perfect sense for "purple": consuls, the highest rank in Roman politics, were the only ones allowed to wear purple mantles, and guess what was Julius Caesar's highest rank? Consul.
@@KyrieFortune from what i know about roman history (please correct me if i am wrong) but even consuls weren't allowed to wear Purple, Julius Caesar was granted permission to wear Purple whenever he wanted and was even given a golden seat in the roman senate, both of which would be used to justify Julius Caesars Assassination, as some would interpret that as him wanting to be like a king.
Everyone is somewhat right! Tyrian purple was the rare and difficult to make dye in question, and is said to have been worn by the Roman kings. During the Republic, it was only used in formal wear for the very highest magistrates, priests, Vestal Virgins, and certain citizen children-but always in the form of a few stripes or similar decorative elements. The only ones allowed to wear the FULL purple toga were generals during their triumphal celebrations. This would be presumably what Caesar was indicating with his purple toga, as he and Augustus both leaned on the “triumphant general” imagery in establishing their power. That’s also where the laurel crown comes from. But it also had that royal connotation-which is why generals were ONLY supposed to wear it in the triumph, ie, as king for a day. In later years, all-purple togas were adopted by consuls and emperors as all-the-time clothes to indicate their rank, and eventually it was restricted to only the emperor himself. It would remain the “color of royalty” throughout the Middle Ages. Everyone also loses, though, because Tyrian purple is actually quite red.

By rule of tennis law-specifically, the International Tennis Federation, or ITF-a tennis ball should be yellow in color. The edict was handed down in 1972, after television viewers had trouble following the movement of white balls. Manufacturers like Gamma Sports also identify their product as yellow-in Gamma’s case, optic yellow. The reason why some think or perceive it to be green is due to either lightening or lack of lightening or lack of something to contrast it with. So in some ways the hues that they see a tennis ball in could change the way it looks.
It's also got to do with the fluorescent colors. humans have three color receptors (red green and blue) which means that seeing yellow already requires two of your color receptors to accurately see the yellow color (yellow triggers red and green). But if your blue receptor works remarkably well, you will notice the fluorescent shine a bit more, that adds a tiny bit of blueish purple to the color that you see. All three color receptors are triggered, but in different amounts, so your brain makes a lot of estimates and calculations, and no brain is the same. some brains will say that the ball is slightly green, while other perceive it as intensely yellow. The dyes used on the ball are undoubtedly yellow, but thanks to the materials, and the eyes and brains of the tennis player, some people still view it as a bit more greenish than intended, while others see it as very very yellow.
Julius Caesar was said to once wear a cloak at his triumph that was just red enough to pass but boarder on purple. He did this to troll the consul. Red was the color of generals and purple the color of the consul, to the point where becoming a consul of Rome was referred to as taking or wearing the purple.
Ahh. That's cool. Here is another fun fact: Purple was considered the color of royalty, because it was so expensive to make. The pigment used was made out of shells and they needed a huge amount of them. Since poor people couldn't spend that much money on clothing, it was considered a status symbol.
Imperial purple is the colour associated with Roman emperors that I think Ken was thinking of. It was made from snails which is why it was so expensive at the time.

When you think royal purple, you're actually thinking of Phoenicians' Tyrian purple. It became a popular color because at first, purple required collecting thousands of snails and an extreme amount of labor per clothing item, which led to it being extremely expensive, which in turn led to it being a symbol of wealth. It was still only producable via this method for the Greeks and Romans, and after that it just stuck around as being considered royal.
For the barney clue... barney is straight up Magenta, which is an entirely separate (although often confused by people who don't know) color from purple. I'm confused why she didn't say periwinkle/Indigo as those would be closer in clues
I was confused because I somehow remembered Barney as both purple and magenta. So I looked it up, and the very first costume was more of a dark indigo purple, subsequent costumes (18 in total) were always much lighter, but seemed to vary between a more blue purple, a more pinkish purple, or magenta - some of the magenta costumes lasted for quite a few years, which might be why it's what you remember. Also, until I spent this time looking at the wiki - I had forgotten how much Barney's smile creeps me out!
@@amandabaker4678 that's actually pretty interesting because I never saw the blueish Indigo Purple barney, I literally only remember the Magenta version
Bro board game backseating is so much worse than video game backseating, in video games people will just go "you should've taken this sword instead of that axe, the stats are better", board games be like "bro she CLEARLY should've said periwinkle, absolute skill issue"

At the end of the day I enjoyed the video as it was my introduction to the channel and is the reason I'm subscribed. As for the backseat stuff, that was unintentional, rereading my comment that's definitely how it comes off, but that genuinely wasn't my intention

My name is Ken and im listening to this as im falling asleep but the Ken song at 32:00 woke me up. Also put a smile on my face. Wonderful as always NRB!
I feel like there’s something to Brooke’s approach, to me it seems like she took the hue of lavender and the value and saturation of Barney. It’d be interesting to play using clues that way.
Tyrian Purple is a reddish purple dye color that was very expensive and often associated with royalty. It is also known as "royal purple". Both of the clues were spot on, because it was a symbol of royalty at different times in history and also was considered the most expensive color to the Romans. It was expensive both because it was collected from sea snails (so very labor and resource heavy) and also because it would become more vivid after repeated washings.
@@AeonKnigh432 not quite equal, cues has an extra sound in common with hues. It’s the first sound in the word ‘you’. Both hues and cues have it after the first consonant sound. Clues replaces it with the L sound.

35:35 I got you Ken, history time! In the past, purple was indeed a royal colour, because it was the hardest to find in nature and most of the time it had to be mixed. So it was really expensive and only rich people could afford it!
I was raised Jehovah's Witness, who don't celebrate Christmas, Birthdays etc. So there weren't many times in my life I received a gift -- so times when I did, I remember very clearly. In 1996 I got a Barney the Dinosaur doll. I even took him to school on the 1 day of the year we were allowed to bring in a toy. Today he sits atop my wardrobe, a little sun-bleached on one side, from the six month stint he did sitting on my windowsill. Anyway, I'll never forget the exact hue of Barney the Dinosaur because the memory of unclipping him from his little cardboard gift box 26 years ago is etched in my mind forever.

Old video but yes !!! Caesar and Royalty definitely purple. Tyrian Purple dye (the colour of royalty) was (and still is) made by drying out and grinding up the mucus membranes of a very specific sea snail. One tablespoon of the dye would need the membranes from literally thousands of snails.

Purple is the color of royalty! One of the hardest colors to produce, so only the rich and elites wore it in their togas in Rome. Caesar 100% would have worn a full purple toga almost always! Good job Ken

I bought this game yesterday, largely because I saw there was an ep of it on NRB. And the way my family played pretty much is carbon copy of this video XD Mom ended up winning by a large margin because she gave terrible clues but was great at guessing. The clue/cue giver kinda gets the shaft on points during their turn which means there's no incentive to give good clues. Imo it should be played in the opposite where the clue giver gets points based on how close people get to the actual hue, and guessers score one point based on if they're in the frame.

@StarkMaximum my issue is more so people confusing magenta and purple. Magenta is a pink, while purple is purple. At the end of the day I enjoyed the video as it was my introduction to the channel and is the reason I'm subscribed. As for the backseat stuff, that was unintentional, rereading my comment that's definitely how it comes off, but that genuinely wasn't my intention
Wait, tennis balls ARE yellow, I'm with you Adam! (but I also played this and everyone laughed at my perception of avocado sooo...)
Oh hey, I've actually played this game! It's pretty fun, although it can get frustrating at times when the other players interpret your clues differently than you intended
These are truly the highlight of my week! Trying my best to start weekly game nights with my friends, because of y’all its going great so far! 🥰
They inspired us aswell. We have been going strong since march!
My name is Ken and im listening to this as im falling asleep but the Ken song at 32:00 woke me up. Also put a smile on my face. Wonderful as always NRB!
This is my first Board Game Club video, I have been dying at these confessionals
Barney holding the tennis ball had me crying 😂 Great episode!
Your channel is an absolute joy, keep doing what you’re doing!!
I always considered tennis balls to be yellow too so I also felt like I was going crazy when everybody assured Adam they were green :o
theyre green-ish yellow, not pure yellow
29:54 This explains Brooke"s toilet problems.
She wishes to return to the sea.
17:12 the sync between me and Blair was amazing
The moment where they all spontaneously start singing Ken's name to the tune of _The Great Escape_ is really funny for some reason.
As someone who's family are from Coventry seeing Ken put the EXACT opposite colour was hilarious
I'm going to need the full soundbite of the 'Ken' song, obviously. Expecting an NRB musical shortly.
That tower for rolling dice is freaking great
Luck of the Irish was one of the best movies I’ve seen.
Also Alley Cats is pretty good too
I know all of us were likely rooting for Adam's comeuppance at first but I'd like to see him get some victories in the latter stages of 2022.
I was never rooting against Adam, he has had no uppence to come
clues can only be one word ? - starts laughing in german :D
Limes do in fact lighten as they become more ripe.
I feel like there’s something to Brooke’s approach, to me it seems like she took the hue of lavender and the value and saturation of Barney. It’d be interesting to play using clues that way.
Props to the editor of this video for making me laugh very hard. Really well done on this one!
12:20 limes are sold unripe they turn yellow as they ripen
Tyrian Purple is a reddish purple dye color that was very expensive and often associated with royalty. It is also known as "royal purple". Both of the clues were spot on, because it was a symbol of royalty at different times in history and also was considered the most expensive color to the Romans.
It was expensive both because it was collected from sea snails (so very labor and resource heavy) and also because it would become more vivid after repeated washings.
I've seen this game standing in the background of other BGC vids and I've been wondering how it's played!
It feels dirty agreeing with Adam, but Clues definitely rhymes with Hues. Not as well as Cues does, obviously, but it absolutely does.
You dirty swine! You'll make him believe he's not crazy, you're wasting years of work!
I mean, they have an equal amount of sound at the end that rhymes, it's just that cues seems like a better ryhme because it's shorter
@@AeonKnigh432 not quite equal, cues has an extra sound in common with hues. It’s the first sound in the word ‘you’. Both hues and cues have it after the first consonant sound. Clues replaces it with the L sound.
Ken just makes every game he's involved in slightly chaotic
Brooke, no lie, I have been trying to remember the name of that mermaid Disney Channel movie for years. Thank you for your deep knowledge of old school Disney lore.
This was so fun to watch. I love this game (it was actually one of the first modern board games I bought!).
Great job by Laurie hiding the sneeze during Brooke's 13th Year story.
As someone from Coventry, the commentary on Coventry is very accurate.
Can’t wait for the inperson BOTC episodes.
Looking forward to watching this after my board game night tonight with my mates 👍
I think they should post an affiliate link if they can for the game being played. I just bought this after watching the play and I know it has encouraged a lot of people to buy a lot of the games played
Good that Adam didn’t mess up the name of the game in the start. Don’t want any miss information to go around here….
Yellow vs green tennis balls was a big debate for a while at my secondary school, I can empathise with Adam.
“Ok, ok TENNIS 🎾” hahaha I love Sullivan
This game has been sitting on the shelf for a while, this inspired me to break it out
I approve all these Pokémon references and knowledge, especially Laurie's
Definition of "rhyme" according to google:
"have or end with a sound that corresponds to another."
hUES
clUES
Always fun watching the gang gaslight Adam 😂
It isn't the same sound though, the U sound in hue and cue is more of a "ju" while in clue its just a "u"
Ending in the same letters is different to rhyming. Clues is more like "Cloos", it doesn't rhyme with Hues
@@damp8277 Depends on your accent though. Generally, and stated by Rhymezone, they are comparable
hues and cues have the same sound, clues does not
time to relearn english phonology
@@KyrieFortune they both have an "oo" sound. "cloo" and "hyoo" both end with the same "oo" sound.
17:13 Wait, am I actually watching an OutsideXtra video?
25:32 an underrated moment
"You got this little tiger"
You'd swear Blair and Sullybob are bound to each other with that connection! Making for one vindictive Lady of The Board! This ain't over!
I thought I was the only one who noticed
Rome traded a lot in purple dyes which is one of the ways they made a lot of wealth. Also games like Civilization usually associate Rome with purple.
For the record, “Born in the Purple” is a common phrase hailing from (I believe) the Byzantine Empire? Which is associated with being born into royalty!!
OK SO... it's true. the CARDS vs the BOARD... it just hits different 😂 I recently played on my birthday and sometimes we were WAY off.
32:00 that Ken song ❤ NRB (between the contestants and producers) come up with so much awesome improv music that i just have to rewatch about 5-10 times b4 i can move on.
PS. Brooke's little harmonising on the last bit was perfect 👍
It was so great! Ken seems chill, definitely wouldn't mind seeing him more often
@@icymallard3 definitely. Loved him on Blood On The Clocktower too. Would love to see him play many different important roles in that too.
When they went jiggly-puff, everyone sang and so did i and i love that.
I love sullivan so much - him shouting "TENNIS!!" in a panic resonates
Old video but yes !!! Caesar and Royalty definitely purple. Tyrian Purple dye (the colour of royalty) was (and still is) made by drying out and grinding up the mucus membranes of a very specific sea snail. One tablespoon of the dye would need the membranes from literally thousands of snails.
I'm sitting here in the US watching a table mostly full of Brits and I'm the one who heard the "Barney" clue and immediately thought of cockney rhythming slang from Ocean's 11. :D
Yeah, Blair! Glad that Pokémon knowledge came in handy.
As someone who grew up in Latin-America I just want to say I was very confused at the beginning with the lemon and lime because we usually refer to them the opposite way (lemon being green and limes yellow) lol
Purple is the color of royalty! One of the hardest colors to produce, so only the rich and elites wore it in their togas in Rome. Caesar 100% would have worn a full purple toga almost always! Good job Ken
I call bollocks on the Patreon wins being canon!
Adam set this bet up on the pretence that there would be roughly 50 episodes of BGC this year (in the resolutions video)! You can't just ADD more episodes!
I love this game. I'm often dead on which is freaky lol. But i really like how it plays!
i agree with Adam about the tennis ball color. but then again, i'm also a bit colorblind.
9:20 This may be hard to believe, but weirdly enough, green limes are not fully ripe... and limes will actually turn yellow when ripened.
limes are actually underripe when we eat them. Limes start of the green we know and eat, and end up a diffrent colour later on
30:45
wait why would those be your two choices and not purple... the color of royalty
31:35
yeah see they get it
Damn for the Lavender + Barney one she could have said ‘Discord’
Tyrian purple is the color of royalty.
Gotta love Adam trying to get OSW's attention at 38:11 😂😂
As far as purple and Caesar or even Rome. There is a board game called Donning the Purple. Which is about Rome.
Yeah, there we go! The second clue does not overwrite the first clue, so look in-between the two. I do not remember her name, but I like the lady who tried to do that. With the crown.
That being said she was still horrendously off with the Barney clue, but the method was solid!
Adam is extremely correct that tennis balls are very yellow and everyone else is wrong.
I'm with Adam tennis balls are like neon yellow with a tint of green
Ken's royalty clue was bang on. Caesar as the follow up was equally good.
The official colour or tennis balls is Optic Yellow. Adam, you were right.
My favourite time of the week, keep up the good work guys👍🏻
It’s so comforting knowing I’m not the only one who remembers Baby Bop and BJs names after not seeing Barney for 20 years
Thumbs up for Luck of the Irish, great DCOM.
