@1:40 That "wire" (more like fishing line) coming up from the steering column is *supposed* to be permanently attached to the instrument cluster, and the other end attaches to the steering column with a spring clip. The gear indicator is just a spring gauge that you access from the front side (remove the "lens" and the gauge bezel). This video shows a complete cluster tear-down, with the gear indicator exposed ua-cam.com/video/pAgZ8R_gE5c/v-deo.html For those servicing a truck with automatic transmission - remove the knee panel directly below the steering column (two obvious screws on the panel). With the transmission in Park , find the lower end of the steering column cover and run your fingers up the right side. At about 3 o'clock, you'll feel the clip securing the "wire". Push it down the column (towards the firewall), and it will pop off.
Currently doing work on this same panel. The cable you mentioned hanging loose behind the panel... I believe belongs to the Park, Reverse, Neutral, etc. indicator on the bottom left of the panel. I tried to remove the panel as you have described but the cable does not allow that to happen. I put it back together and hope to find information on how to disconnect the cable. I'm "old" and need brighter panel lights. Thanks for making the video Van. I tried to count the number of bulbs in the panel. I have 10 of the new style diode bulbs but I don't want to take it all apart and find out I needed more. If you happen to know/remember how many there are in the panel, I would appreciate if you would let me know. Great truck right!
I dont remember right off hand how many bulbs this cluster takes. We sold the truck almost a year ago. I finally had to go to the junk yard and get another panel. I wish I had done that to begin with. Good luck with the project. Sorry I couldn't be of better help to ya. Have a great week
Yeah i have a 88 Chevy c1500 305 v8 and dang speed o doesn't work on it either. Dang sucks not knowing speed and makes the milage not register right cause speedo hasn't worked in long time . Wondering if the speed ssensor on transmission is bad or something.
@@luisa8046 no it was a customers that was broght to me . But I would say it was probably speed sensor on trans they are cheap an a easy repair . Owner of truck blew the 305 so now it's all tore apart
Your welcome. I couldn't find any videos showing anything about this issue so I made one to help someone out. Thanks for taking the time to comment and thanks for watching
I have a 92 chevy c1500 i replaced some burnt bulbs with led bulbs and when i connected it back and started the truck no needles work at all, the dash lights work but the annoying chime the truck makes won’t stop. Any solutions for my problem?
Update: I actually found my problem a couple of days ago. I always thought maybe the wire of the gauge motors are not making full contact to the motherboard of the cluster so I went down and checked on my fuses. The cluster fuse is located on the very top left corner of the fuse box i just replaced it and it works just fine all i need to do is reposition my needles to the correct gas, rpms and oil pressure. I hope anyone else who’s dealing with that problem hopefully my info helps
This is going to be helpful. My odometer stopped working and I'm trying to find out why. So far I'm not having much luck but at least now I know how to take the dash apart.
Awesome. Good luck. I hope it works for you. This seems to be a big issue with Chevy trucks. If it doesn’t fix your issue. You may want to check around at some junkyards for a used instrument panel. Thanks for leaving a comment and as always thanks for watching 😁👍
Very helpful. My dad's mechanic should check out your channel. Don't know what he spent but the dash lights still don't work. I'll try your way and that should do it. Thank you.
Did the speedometer work after the repair? I have a 1990 GMC C1500 and the speedometer works sporatically, I too have to "Fonzie Smack" it and it will start working again foe awhile. Seems to be somthing loose in there not making contact correctly. Does cleaning the contacts get it working again? It's a pain because the cruise control only works when the speedometer does! Thanks.
cant get the damn thing out on my 1991 gmc. did everything in the video, disconnected the gear selector cable, everythings nbolted, still something holding it in
I got a 88 C1500 and the gauges don’t light up. So at night I have no idea how fast I’m going. But the blinker light, service engine soon, shift (manual transmission), lights all work. But the speedometer, gas oil battery and temperature gauge don’t. Any help ? Thanks
I have a 89 chevy c1500 too and looking over other comments I believe I have just the same problems. The gauges don't light up at all so I can't see any at night; the gas, temp, and battery gauges don't work at all or partially (gas gauge fills up only to about quarter when it is completely filled, the other two are completely screwed up), and the passenger side front blinker light is not getting any voltage so my driver side tail light isn't working either. What would you suggest doing for these problems?
Also by the way, your video is very helpful so thank you. I have had this problem for over a year now and saw your video last year but never got around to completely doing what you showed since I had to go off to college. I will check it all out again now since I am working on the truck again and hopefully have it done this time!
Well, honestly, mine worked good for a few months after tinkering with it in the video. I finally got ticked off at it and went to a local junkyard and bought one for $50 Well worth the money 😁👍 thanks for the awesome comment. Just take your time and have fun with it. 😁👍 have a great weekend brother
Would pulling the instrument panel out and cleaning them posts help with the speedometer to work, mine was working for a while and then it would stop working and then about 10 mins later it would start working again... could cleaning it fix the problem?
Mine started acting up again. I am going to try cleaning the connection when I pull it back out. I’m not sure if it will fix it. But I’m definitely gonna try. 👍😁
Quick question. I have a problem with my dash, all the gauges light up but the gas doesn't mark right its always on a full tank according to the gauge and also the center one speedometer/odometer not too sure doesn't mark anything what could be wrong with it? Thank you
Mine is the same way. There is a band behind the instrument panel. Like a rubber band but it’s not rubber. It needs to be re attached. It’s a pain in the butt. That’s why mine is still the way it is lol.
Hey brother... i have a 1991 silverado and when i turn the key on the gas gauge goes down and when i turn the key off the gas gauge goes up and the speedometer goes up also.. any suggestions anyone please!!!!!!
It did for the most part. Every once in awhile i will have to smack the dash. Way better than before. Thanks for watching. And great question. I hope this video helps.
Vans World my speedometer is stuck on 70 mph and my fuel gauge don’t read when I add gas it just stays the same at a lil over a quarter tank I think the only thing that works is my battery voltage meter
My odometer and trip don’t work, fuel gauge stays maxed out And my oil gauge bounces all over the place so I had to add an aftermarket one. May end up buying another cluster.

Mine stopped working I took it out gave it a spin and it fixed it weird
the gear on the left side can come loose and walk off the shaft push it on and try a little crazy glue

It worked for awhile then I had to buy a replacement instrument panel. Got a good deal from a junk yard

It worked for a while but its back to doing the same thing again. 👍😀
@@VansWorld maybe make sure the contacts are cleaned and make good contact? Thanks.
Yep, I am going to take it apart again when it gets warmer and check where it plugs in. Probably spray come contact cleaner in there
Do I have to reconnect the gear gauge. And if so how?
On my 1988 Chevrolet Silverado c1500 2wd . I have the same cluster . Can I change the cluster to the kind that has the needle's ?
I’m not sure. Check with a local junk yard and ask them. They should know.
cant get the damn thing out on my 1991 gmc. did everything in the video, disconnected the gear selector cable, everythings nbolted, still something holding it in
You have the same gauge cluster as our 88 pick up and the problem we have is that it mark gas and temp they just stay in place
Did you ever fix it ? I’m having the same problem

Not sure. I finally got another one from a junk yard. Find a junk yard near you and they should be able to tell you. 😁👍

It sounds like your float in the gas tank.
@@VansWorld also when shifting into gear it stays in park and doesn't move do you have any tips on that thank you so much for the help sir

Weird. Mine had a metal wire/ cable running into the back of the cluster preventing it to be removed like yours did
That is weird.
anyone had any luck with this? my friends truck has the exact wire
Here's a video that shows you where the gear shift wire originates to disconnect. ua-cam.com/video/lrmFzAyKZyo/v-deo.html
Thanks brother
I got a Chevy k 1500 and not sure if my speedometer is just broken or stuck and really hoping I don’t gotta replace it. 😬
Check around some junk yards near you. You should be able to find one fairly reasonable 👍😁

You should use t10 leds next time you swap out bulbs
How did you hook the shifter indicator cable back up?
No clue sorry
