How to make backgammon and chess board with Khatam technique Inlaid handicrafts
Khatam is one of the ancient techniques of Iranian inlay making. It is a version of tailoring in which art forms are created by decorating the surface of wooden objects with delicate pieces of wood, bone and metal with intricate geometric patterns with precise cutting. Khatamkari or Khatambandi refers to the art of inlaying. Common materials used in making inlaid items are gold, silver, brass, aluminum and twisted wire.
Inlay design is a very complex process. Sometimes there are more than 400 pieces per square inch in an average quality work. Thin rods made of wood of different colors, ivory, bone, brass, silver, etc., stuck together in the form of long bundles that could have a round, rectangular or polygonal cross-section. The handles were cut into thin slices and combined with others to create intricate patterns from David's collection. In each cubic centimeter, approximately 250 individual pieces can be joined together, smoothed, oiled and polished. The woods used include betel nut, walnut, cedar and pine.
