Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
The Bible does say that New Testament baptism is for the remission (pardon, forgiveness) of sins.
      ( Luke 24:47, Acts 2:38 & 22:16, Colossians 2:11,12 )
The Bible does say that New Testament Baptism saves us.
      ( Acts 2:38-40, Titus 3:5, 1 Peter 3:21, Mark 16:16 )
The Bible does say that New Testament baptism is our burial, which is an essential part of the gospel of Death, Burial, and Resurrection.
      ( 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 6:3-5, Colossians 2:12 )

This topic is near and dear to my heart. My B.A. in biblical studies was received at Palm Beach Atlantic University, a S.B.C. school in West Palm Beach, FL. Baptism was THE most discussed/argued/debated topic while there. In the beginning, to be honest, I was not all that prepared to defend it nor was actually convinced of the efficaciousness of infant baptism. (I had not long before returned to the church after being absent for several years). I am so thankful to my Christian brothers and sisters at that school for pushing me to really get into Scripture and not rely on rationalism for the foundation of my faith in Christ. Once I became a pastor, those prior "discussions" motivated me to prepare a study on infant baptism, and baptism in general. For unlike Pastor Wolfmuller I have a face for radio. :) Not to mention that I am somewhat older and not so well-versed in this whole video age. This Bible-study is 8 pages in length and addresses a number of the typical issues that arise regarding Infant Baptism. If you would like to receive it feel free to email me directly at: sthilary@trinityfredericktown.net. I promise not to contact you further unless you request it. If you wish to verify my identity you can do so by going to the LCMS webpage and on its locater tab look up Rick Pettey. I am pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fredericktown, MO. and Zion Lutheran Church, Gravelton, MO. (btw- the "sthilary" refers to the fourth century church father St. Hilary of Poitiers, Gaul, today France).

I’m soooo thankful that I finally know what baptism means under sound doctrine. The LCMS is the only church body that I know of who preaches this. And even some LCMS churches are starting to be tempted by the devil to take more of an evangelical view, say to see, but the fact alone that it’s evident the devil takes time to whisper lies into the ears of the church about baptism and the Lord’s supper should tell us to stop and question why. Why would the devil want to tempt people away from these sacraments into diminishing the meaning? Because they actually are pricelessly powerful to save and reassurance Christians of grace amidst our sanctification , peace, and salvation. All things of which the devil hates for people to understand.

Seems to me misconceptions of baptism coming out of the protestant movements that claim baptism is an act of obedience, is based on the idea that Christ sacraments are unnecessary or symbolic and that only man's decisions are necessary and our own works based on an emotional reactions, is the reason why we are baptized.

I noticed you read Ephesians 5:25 correctly, “by washing with water by the word” and then immediately after said “water and the word”. Multiple times you repeat “water and word”, so it clearly was not a slip up. That change in language makes a massive difference. I’d love for you to show, exclusively from the Greek, how Paul is not saying the word is doing the washing. Because otherwise you’ve (no offense, brother) have made a huge error by rephrasing the text to suit your interpretation. Reading the Greek for myself, I notice the glaring absence of “Kai” between water / word. Just saying. I look forward to your reply.

Since Baptism saves (1Pet 3:21), Baptism must be a work of God and not a work of man because our own works don't save us (Eph 2:8-9). Clearly stated without ambiguity: "And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the body but the guarantee of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." (1Peter 3:21) EHV

In Eph 5:26, note that the "cleansing" of the church is past tense. So what does the cleansing come before? It comes before Christ's giving of himself verse 25. So if Christ's giving of himself comes AFTER the cleansing, then this giving cannot be as a sacrifice on the cross since we would expect that to be essential to the cleansing. What other ways does Christ give himself which comes after this cleansing? He gives himself in marriage, which, of course, fits the context. So before we can be united with Christ, we need to be "cleansed" which happens in baptism.

"so that he might make it holy by cleansing it, washing it with water and the word,"
The ISV is the only version that says "with water and the word" , the majority of versions say "by the word" or "with the word" . Even the New International Version
    says :
"to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, " I think it's a stretch to equate washing with Baptism .

Now we attend a reform church that does infant baptism but my son is almost 6 and the pastor says I now need to wait for him to be able to have a believers baptism because he is old enough to say he doesnt want to be baptised. Bec the CRC sees baptism as a "means of grace" but not regenerative he sees it as no big deal to wait, but as a parent now quite sure that baptism is in some way regenerative, I worry waiting is irresponsible? Could anyone advise? Especially you, Pastor if you see this- am I denying my son a grace that could affect his eternal destiny should he due before he is able to make a believers confession of faith? My mom, a pastor, also not too happy about this one. If you believe that God's Word is both inerrant and Holy Spirit written, then our triune God through Paul made it clear...several times in the pastoral (what it means to be a preacher/shepherd of Christ's flock) epistles that "pastors should be husband to only one wife," and that "I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over men..." However, the better arguments against women pastors is Genesis, the created order, and the curse of women to desire the headship of their husbands all their days and our lording it over them

So...long story short...we are either to bend knee to Gods word no female pastors...or our rationalism that says women can do anything men can do. Another consideration...God specified in the old covenant who would be the priests...not by gender...rather by being in family of Levite. The real rub is the same...do I do it Gods way...or am I going to do it my way.

What do you do with the criminal on the cross?
What do you do with Cornelius and his family receiving the Holy Spirit before Baptism?
Were these people not saved until Baptism?
According to scripture: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
    ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭ESV‬‬
The gift of the Holy Spirit is what seals us.

      @stevencarter6194 4 роки тому +1

That is a great question. Since we are not God, we cannot know exactly how he dealt with this situation, but there are several possibilities.
      1) The Great Commission had not yet been given (Matthew 28:18-20). Therefore baptism was not yet instituted in the Church. The way of salvation would be through faith as with Abraham and the patriarchs. At the time of the criminal's death Christ was already dead but not risen. Another reason for the use of the Old Testament plan of salvation. (Romans 4)
      2) Acts 2:38 - At Pentecost Peter gave the command to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Similar to case 1, the command occurs after the death on the cross.
      3) This was a special case where God/Jesus made an exception based on the circumstances. (The least likely in my opinion.)
Note: The Great Commission and Pentecost call for baptism in the name of Christ, not John the Baptist.

I respectfully disagree with your interpretation of Ephesians 5:25-27. Paul is using the words cleansing and water as a metaphor to describe what the Word does to and for our souls.
Baptism is an outward response, out of obedience, to an inward decision to repent and believe in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross and victory over death to provide a wrath-appeasing sacrifice and sufficient cleansing of our souls to make us right before God by grace through faith.

I was baptized in a Lutheran Church as an infant. Later I left the Lutheran Church and was baptized by immersion. I now know I was wrong. I'm back to a Lutheran Church but did I deny the faith when I was rebaptized? Another lutheran pastor on UA-cam says that you cease to be a Christian when you get rebaptized.

Currently my understanding of the bible is similar to a reformed baptist. Yet your teaching on baptism seems more sola scriptura than what I was taught and previously read. Yet, the baby baptism thing. It's no more sola scriptura than the teaching of baptism being symbolic. It's just not in the scripture period. You have to make a case for it. And anything that needs more than the simplicity of what the bible says I will always struggle with. It's why I struggled in the Baptist teachings of The Lord's supper, missionary work and yes baptism. They make a strong biblical case for why they are done they way we do them but it isn't simply what the bible says. Lutherans do the same extra explaining for baby baptism. I guess no group is truly sola scriptura on everything.

Bryan Wolfmueller, Why don't people believe what the Bible says about baptism..
Which is by total immersion for believers... Infants cannot believe.
Peter never said water baptism saves, he said it's a figure of salvation. And the Greek proves it.
The Greek emphasis for "Saved" in Mk 16: 16, is on the "Believing", and Jesus went on to prove it.
He said "He that doesn't believe shall be damned".
Please note what Jesus didn't say. He didn't say, "He that isn't baptized shall be damned" DID HE?.
Peter never said water baptism remits sins, in Acts 2: 38. The Greek says it this way, [And this is the way the people would have heard and understood Peter]. "Repent for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, THEN you can be baptized".
Peter never said be baptized for forgiveness of sins in Acts 10,
There are three Christian baptisms, [1] The rebirth, [2] the baptism with the Holy Ghost, [3]Water baptism. And you have to know which one the Bible is talking about. and in Rom 6: 3--6. Col 2: 12--13. Is the rebirth, NOT water baptism. To says it's water baptism, is to say water is greater the the Holy Spirit.
The "Water" in Jn 3: 5 isn't baptism. Every time that Jesus meant baptism, He clearly said so, but He doesn't mention it in Jn 3: 5.
    Water is symbolic of the Word. Jn 15: 3. Eph 5: 26. James 1: 18. 1 Pet 1: 22--23.
Eph 5: 26 doesn't say by the Word AND baptism, Does it. You are adding to the Bible.
So you can see how wrong you are.

Matthew 3:15 Jesus insisted that even John's baptism was fitting for them to fulfill all righteousness. A servant is not greater than his Lord.
Matthew 3:16 In baptism, the Father claims the Son. The Spirit rests on the Son.
Matthew 21:25 Mere water baptism is a gift from Heaven.
Matthew 28:19 Make disciples by baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and by teaching.
Mark 1:4 Mere water baptism repentance grants the forgiveness of sins.
Mark 16:16 *Baptized believers are saved, unbelievers condemned.*
Luke 7:29 Even water baptism is a public declaration that God is righteous.
Luke 7:30 *Rejecting even mere water baptism = rejecting God's purpose for you.*
John 1:31, 33 John knew beforehand that God would reveal the Christ through baptism.
Acts 2:38 *Repentance and water baptism in the name of Jesus = forgiveness and the Spirit.*
Acts 2:39-41 3000 bachelors, virgins, wives, husbands, and children of all ages *received forgiveness and the Spirit in baptism.* The smallest can't have decided to repent in a mature way, but they were not excluded.
Acts 8 Many early church Bible readers saw a distinction between the Spirit's invisible gift of repentance/forgiveness and the Spirit's visible gift of leadership/ordination. Philip the Evangelist could baptize but not bestow spiritual authority. Only the apostles could do that.
Acts 10:47-48 *Baptism in the name of Jesus is water baptism.*
Acts 22:16 *Baptism washes away sins.*
Romans 6:3-5 *Water Baptism (which buries) is death to sin, death with Christ, newness of life in Christ, and resurrection with Christ.*
1 Corinthians 1:13 Baptism must not turn into hero worship, cliques, and factionalism.
1 Corinthians 12:13 On the contrary, baptism is unity in the one Holy Spirit in Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:29 Even heretical baptism declares the resurrection of the dead.
Galatians 3:27-28 Baptism clothes every member of the body of Christ in equality.
Ephesians 3:5 There is one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.
Ephesians 5:26 *Baptism sanctifies the Church because it is the washing of water with the word.*
Colossians 2:11 Water Baptism is the Spiritual circumcision, the circumcision of Christ.
Colossians 2:12 Christ was buried. You were buried with Christ *in water baptism.* God raised Christ from the dead. You believe God raised Christ from the dead. Therefore, God raised you with Christ *in baptism.* This is all *God’s powerful work.*
Hebrews 6:1-2 *Baptism is a basic foundational teaching. You can't say you believe in Jesus while rejecting his basic teachings.*
1 Peter 3:20 Noah was saved by water, not from water. The flood waters washed away much evil.
1 Peter 3:21 Baptism now *saves you!* Baptism is assurance/demand of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This verse summarizes all that has been said above.
