I’ve been to and dozens dozens of concerts over the years, and nobody ever quite got close to them - and that includes the likes of Rush, Metallica, U2, and other heavy duty global touring bands. They just had this rhythmic synchronicity thing going on, and a stage presence, that nobody else could get near. I don’t think we’ll see the likes of this sort of thing again..
Well, there's only one musical genius, a prodigy, or, as Phil's former teacher called him "a special kid"- due to his innate ability to detect and discern even the tiniest discrepancies in the heights and lows of musical tones (the famous incident occurring during a school choir's performance in England, when Phil was 5 ), and none of the bands have had anyone like him. "Phily" had never learned conventional tones, he had always played by ears, which had therefore ultimately translated into drumming masterpieces and eternal classics. No drummer could match him during his prime (which, in my personal opinion, arguably climaxed during the Genesis Invisible Touch Tour) in any shape or form, period. His "looseness, effortlessness, groove, the sort of "Let me smoke a cigar, while I'm drumming with one hand only" ease he had made his drumming look even during the most technically complex pieces, was unprecedented, unmatched and unparalleled. I don't care which drummer will be brought to my attention, I've seen them all repeatedly, they didn't possess any of those attributes. Phily's drum kit is also worth of mention. While it was mounted and set up at a n angle that it reached beyond 180 degrees, he was fluidly and naturally able to fully and PRAGMATICALLY use it at its entirety.during concerts, essentially at any given (needed) point. Which is to say, unlike, for instance Neil Peart, whose drum set was assembled at the angle of 360 degrees, pointless unless he used it entirely for his drum solos for the visual effect. Not that those blew me away by any means. Furthermore, Genesis couldn't be beaten when it came to instrumental songs. Simply no other band had a chance to best them in synchronization, chemistry, groove, tightness, laser and light effects and their timing. Flawless. Lastly, the best musical duo of all time consisting of Phil and Tony kept putting on insanely orgasmic sounds, tones and lyrics, every time the two happened to have prominent passages of songs together. Think of "Apocalypse 9/8", or the opening of "The Brazilian." I only wish they were able to compose just mere one album of their mastery.. It would mean an ultimate emotional orgasm for anyone who isn't tone deaf.
Well, I think that in terms of synchronicity, ELP has demonstrated that Carl Palmer's Percussion and Keith Emerson's Keyboards, in my humble opinion, has surpassed Genesis's !!! I saw several times them live, and, believe... they were able to "talk" with their "eyes" only !!! Amazing how they could "match" all notes in several songs !!!
Agreed. We all get old but it's still sad that he can't play anymore. I hold out faint hope that they might just record one last studio album with Chester or Phil's son drumming.
I can’t help but always smile when I watch Phil Collins play drums. In a way it’s like watching my dog run; there’s such an abandoned joy in what he does (or did). Big damn hero.

Simply awesome. Chester and Phil, the greatest rock drumming duo live of all time. When you stand in that crowd, and they are banging hard on those drums, you can feel it vibrating deep down in your soul. Just epic!
Had the honour of seeing Genesis many, many times over the years - twice when Chester and Phil were both drumming. Anyone who has not seen these two virtuosos on stage at the same time has missed something that can not be demonstrated in video. You have to be there and feel the energy
Don't know how they did it, but Chester and Phil are like one. They always land on the exact same frame if you watch the footage (!) I'm sure Phil was totally at ease, banging out his wacky and awesome grooves, licks and fills (both powerful and fluid) while Chester was always with there right with him, not missing a single beat (literally). They both feel the exact same. Totally love it when they play two different grooves or variations together - and it dovetails perfectly each time - and grooving!!!! Goosebumps every time! When Phil took over the vocals, Chester always delivered a rock solid groove with his own touch and groove. I'm sure behind the focused stone face, Chester always loved every moment with Genesis (and Phil).
you have a VERY strong sense about feeling the music (specialy drums obviously). I bought a music magasin in the late 70' (don't remember witch one) and in an interview Phil said that when he say Chester playing for the first time, he was struck by the fact that this drummer's style was so much like is own ! He literally sait that "it was like almost looking at my self play drums" ! this is the moment that Phil ask Chester if he wanted to join Genesis.

And phil collins is an amazing drummer, but is most remembered by the general public as a vocalist.

I saw this very concert two nights before around the corner at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. I was 16! It blew my mind. I saw them the first time at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh on the Duke tour - only about a month after this London Lyceum concert was filmed. What a fantastic band LIVE. Genesis is without equal.
May 7, 1980 at the Lyceum Ballroom, London. This is arguably along with the 1973 Shepperton show and the 1987 Wembley show, the most famous Genesis concert film of all time. The entire concert is on here as well as each of the individual songs from a number of sources. Just epic.

Phil's been my top "living" inspiration for forever. (Top "Dead" inspirations - Beethoven, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Bill Evans, Miles Davis - you-know-the-drill...)

I saw them in The Apollo in Manchester on this tour (2nd night). The set list was the same as the one in the Lyceum in London two weeks later. Absolutely magnificent performance by the band. PC led from the front that night. His energy was astounding, interacting with the crowd, on the drums and bounding about the stage. The rest of the band were more than polished. The lighting was wonderful. A privilege to be there. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago.......

This show has been done many times by Phil Collins with Bill Bruford, or Phil with Chester Thompson. What AMAZING drummers, to be able to do this in sync with one another! GREAT video, brings back many memories of the days of these performance!
