    What a wonderful teacher you are, Sophia. Even though I have two Master's Degrees, in addition to three advanced Certificates in various topics, I have NEVER had, or seen, a teacher so concerned with the students' success that they actually teach them how to study. I wish that I had known this back when I was still in High School! Thanks, I can still use it in business.

    This is the first video of yours that I came across and not only did I learn about how to take Cornell notes, I actually learned about life in Germany after WW1! I am 30yrs old and I am ashamed to say I did not learn about this at my school. In Europe. England, to be exact. Thank you so much for teaching me, I have subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos.

    I learned how to take better notes when I had the good fortune to visit a college and spend one day in classes while I was in high school. A student showed me how she marked her text. Other than that, no one ever showed me. I've since developed my own system and shown my own students. Kids do need to be shown, and it has become more popular in schools. Thank you for this.

    Its so strange that they don't teach note taking/study skills like this in grade or middle school. Maybe our nations children wouldn't fall behind the rest of the world and grow to hate important subjects like science, math and history if we gave them the skills to succeed from the outset.
    I digress, great video and thank you in advance for all the headaches I'll avoid in the future.
    I have a few question tho, do you only use the front/top page for notes? What happens when you run out of room for notes? Can this method be used for math? What common abbreviations do you recommend for note taking?

      +ATMOSK1234 Hi there, Just go on to the back of the notes if you need more room or onto a new page. You don't have to fit everything on one page!
      Yes, you can use this for math. Proofs go on the right side.
      I teach history so I use S/P/E for Social/Political/Economic and ppl for people all the time... I think it is best when you make up your own abbreviations.

    This is so interesting! This study system isn't exactly used where I live, or at least not in my level, but it's a very useful method for some subjects like history and it is very well explained

    When talking about basic strategies (like figurative language, etc), they work just as well. However, some students a few years ago modified it to use as they read. I always have "look-fors" that would lead to a big question to guide their reading, so they started using the skinny column to list the look-fors and recording text evidence in the right hand column. I took it to the next level by having them answer their big question instead of summarizing.

    This is totally awsome. I always used mindmaps from Tony Buzan for note taking but this Cornell Notes method is far more better.

    In the case of higher level math classes or other classes that include pages and pages of notes (research projects come to mind for this too), the best approach is to set up several pieces of paper in the Cornell Notes form, write as fast as you can and then, after class, instead of a summary at the bottom, list what info is on that page. Then, later when you are looking for a particular piece of information, you can scan the bottom of each page and find what you are looking for quickly.

  • @Iphigen
    @Iphigen  11 років тому

    You can do it either way. The purpose of the summary is to make you think about the information one more time and to make you figure out what is most important from the info you recorded. This helps you remember it because you are thinking about it in a new way. I prefer to do one summary per piece of paper (so 2 pages of notes) because it helps me find information faster later. I just look to the summary and I know its on that page somewhere.

  • @Iphigen
    @Iphigen  11 років тому

    Yes, absolutely it can work with math. There are several options for organizing math notes in this style. For example, you can put the problem on the left and then all the proof work on the right. Try a few things and see what works best for you.

  • @Iphigen
    @Iphigen  11 років тому

    If you are one of the lucky few who have found a way to study that is successful for you on your own, that is awesome for you. But there are lots of people who don't figure it out by osmosis and those people need actual lessons on how to take notes effectively and how to study or they can waste a lot of precious time trying things that don't work. This is just one option. If you don't have a plan that works already, this is a great system to use. If you have a system that works, use that!

  • @Iphigen

    Yes, this method is especially good to use with text books and lectures. The number of papers you have depends on how large you write, how much you summarize, how you put down your notes (do you use pictures or graphs? Those might take more space...). If you have LOTS of pages, you may be recording info you don't need. More practicing summarizing can help. Use you left side to study for all those quizzes! Can you define the vocab and answer the questions without looking at your notes?

  • @Iphigen
    @Iphigen  11 років тому

    Yes, you can. In fact, these notes were developed by Cornell University for college students. That is why they are called Cornell Notes.

    Well, its true that different things work for different people. However, not everyone is able to figure out how to take effective notes on their own. I teach this note taking skill because studies show it is the most effective for the most people. I grade it so students see how well they are learning the skill. But I only grade 1 set of notes per unit. All others can be done any way you like. Then students can see how they do on tests and can really compare which notes work best for them.

    Do you do this method as you are reading the textbook? Is it normal to have a multitude of papers by the end of each chapter? The average chapter in my textbook contain a main headings and many subheadings. Also would this method be practical for me because my semesters are 6-8 weeks in length with exams almost every week.

    Hi Miss. Caramagno, I watched your 2 videos on Cornell notes, I've been using a slightly modified (by me) version of the Cornell method but, I have a doubt, do you recommend this method for taking Computer Engineering notes? Or do you recommend another method for Science and Engineering?
    Thanks in advance and also, awesome videos.

    • @Iphigen
      @Iphigen  9 років тому +3

      Aedra Daedra Hi there... I personally have never taken notes in a Computer Engineering class, so I can't speak directly to the question, but I do feel Cornell Notes are pretty adaptable so I believe you will be able to use them effectively in that class. The purpose of Cornell Notes is to give you a place to take notes in a way that makes sense to you (on the right in text, outline, diagram, picture or some other form) and then a place to categorize and reflect on what you have written (through headings, questions and commentary) on the left. This helps bring the information into your brain in more than one way (taking the notes, creating categories and questioning). Its the act of looking at the information in multiple ways that makes Cornell Notes effective. As long as you are doing that in some form, it should work for Computer Engineering.
      Good luck with your classes!

    • @Iphigen
      @Iphigen  6 років тому +2

      Hi there, It may be that you are trying to write too much of what your professor is saying. It would be nearly impossible to write everything! Have you tried thinking about what seems the most important information your professor is saying and just writing key words from those ideas. You don't need to record complete sentences, just the main ideas, sometimes only a few words to trigger your memory. The mental process of selecting only some of what your professor is saying will also help you remember more of the lecture and make it part of your understanding. You can show your notes to your professor during office hours too and make sure you collected the most important parts until you get the hang of it.

    • @Muradsahar

    • @Iphigen
      @Iphigen  6 років тому

      M. Murad well, you could record the lecture with your professors approval and go over it more than once stopping as you need to or you could ask a fellow student who is a strong note taker if you could snap a picture of their notes with your phone. Then you could spend all your energy listening.
