I had a math teacher in high school who taught everything from Basic Math to Calculus and she taught it in a way that anyone could learn. The concept of the greater and less than signs always confused me but when she said they will always point to the smallest number in a true answer was something all my other teachers never taught; that simple piece of instruction was enough for a lot of people who were struggling with math classes begin to learn without struggling.

Why is it important to take notes while your teacher is talking?
You want to take notes so that you don't have to rely on your memory.
    1. Preview text. Spend 15 minutes to become familiar with the lesson that will be discussed. It will help a lot for you to follow during class.
    2. Review the notes. Spend 5-10 minutes before class reviewing the notes about your previous class.
One of the reasons why you should read preview text and review notes is to help in deciding which information is important.
If you're ever in doubt of noting something, write it. It is better to have too many notes than fewer notes.
    3. Go on a diet. Even though it is better to have too many notes than fewer notes, writing enough notes is more preferred.
→ Use abbreviations. Writing abbreviations can help you take notes faster. (e.g. Reconstruction = R, sounds absurd but hear me out). Using "R" for "Reconstruction" is faster but how can you identify the word? We can go back to the first point, preview text. While preparing for your next class, take note of long words, names, and etc. to track which word it is.
→ Leave out unimportant words. Notes during a lecture are not required to be beautiful, it will slow you down. Try leaving out unimportant words and correct your grammatical errors later on.
→ Supporting Details. Main ideas are always included in the notes so go on a diet with supporting details.
    4. Lecture style. Know how your teacher's lecture flows to focus on which details should be taken note of. It is good to know where the important information is located, it could be in the visual aids, dictated examples, or just the explanation.
→ Show notes to the teacher early for evaluation. Most teachers would be delighted to see your notes, so show them and humbly ask for an evaluation. This way, the teacher can point out flaws in your notes which you can improve later on the semester which translates to better grades.
    5. Use a good note-taking method. There are many kinds of methods for note-taking, but we'll do Cornell note-taking.

That's a secret to life in general, if you sound like you know what you're talking about, people will listen and not question you. Politicians, TV evangelists, and con other artists learned this technique early on in their career. I'm not saying this guy is shady, just that other people in other walks of life may be charismatic but have no clue what they're talking about.

I'm not bitter, but I find it amazing how the school system completely fails to teach you how to learn.
If you packed this into the curriculum I'm sure you'd save many students a lot of hassle and have them learn more in the end, even considering they'll be occupied learning these techniques for some time.

Really goo video, he speaks cleared and slow I love that. I'm not too so good on understanding any video. However I believe I almost understand everything he is teaching. He is very professional and understandable.

This was excellent. However, I've run into a few too many professors who are all over the place and I struggle to figure out how to take notes from them. It's like this stream of consciousness that just spews forth with no direction whatsoever. I then wind up trying to take all my notes from the textbook to make up for this. Needless to say, that winds up being a ton of notes and hard to keep up with.

I am going into uni next month so maybe I don't know, but can't you approach the prof. and ask him nicely if he can at least say that this is an important part that should be written down?

I cannot stress this enough, but every professor i ever had a "recommended" reading in the textbook for the lectue.
Read or skim through it before class. NOBODY does this and you will look reslly smart when you ask intelligent questions and respond to professors questions.
You can also ask questions about things you are unclear on.
It also helps to make abbreviations for the class notes.

I have been trying to learn how to take notes all my life but it never works out. Every semester I start off putting a great deal of effort into them but by the second week it just all falls apart. It gets to a point where I just write stuff in class and them throw them away thinking they will never help me. When exam roles around I have to re-take them and re-do everything in 2 days. Its been tough but you are right, good note taking is very difficult to learn. Thank you.

*How To Take Better Lecture Notes | Notes - Overview*
    1. Prepare for lectures
    a. Review Past Notes Interactively.
    b. Preview the Text Book.
    2. Go on a DIET
    a. Use abbreviations to shorten words. (Maintain a ABBR book/notepad to avoid confusion)
    b. Trim down sentences. (Write only key words and concepts.)
    c. When in doubt, take notes anyways. (Don't skip by thinking that you will remember. Because you don't!)
    3. Know your Instructor
    a. Understand the Lecturing Style. (Not everyone/every method is similar.)
    b. Show notes to instructor and get feedback. (Very important, but no one does this. A rarity in the classroom.)
    4. Use a good note taking method.
    a. Cornell Note Taking System. (Only method mentioned here.)
    b. Outline Technique
    c. Mind Maps
    d. Morse Code Method
    e. Flow Notes
    f. Q/E/C method
    5. Rewrite your Notes.
    a. If lecturer is a fast talker or rushes to finish lessons, rewrite notes once the lecture is finished. (Only method mentioned here.)
    b. Mindmaps
    c. Anki Flashcards
