How to Take Notes - Study Tips - Cornell Notes

- Do you take notes in class? Are they actually helpful for you? Let's learn about the CORNELL METHOD of note-taking. This is a great method for taking notes in class (or from your textbook, or watching a video). There's no way to remember every word of a lecture. But taking great lecture notes is the first step to getting good grades and being a great student.
The most important rule is don't write down every word. Listen carefully, then write simplified and abbreviated phrases that capture the main ideas.
When you get home, RE-READ your notes! Proofread them, making corrections as needed before you forget. Check your notes with a friend! In the margin, write brief headers that will cue your memory of each section of your notes.
Finally, write a summary at the bottom of the page so you can quickly tell what this page of notes is all about.

hehehee these are fantastic notes! We love Liliana so much! :)
+Socratica haha cool! I was born in the same day as you, exactly 20 years after :P
I knew I had seen you somewhere on TV in Brazil, I just could not remember...
Celso Rosa
She's a former brazilian actress
@@josueinhan8436 Ecuadorian born-Brazilian
Great.
Now I'm going to write Cornell notes on how to write Cornell notes!
She's brazilian !?!?! Wow, her english is soooo perfect !
And her Spanish too.
@@Bestyalware How did you know, are there any videos of her speaking spanish?
@@lighto2240 yeah she's multilingual..here name is Liliana Castro, you can check her ig..she's actually an actor..you can tell that by her facial expressions and her voice modulations which are so great
Ela é sim nascida no Equador, ela participou da novela alma gêmea, A bailarina linda Luna ❤️
This is exactly what I was looking for to help my 6th grader learn WHAT notes to take. There are a million videos on the Cornell Method which I could care less about. Methods are secondary to learning what information to write down. What is great about this video is it shows a "lecture" and how a person should take notes. I've been watching videos for HOURS and this is the only one I came across that gave lecture examples. Do you have any more or possibly some where the examples aren't as high level (something a middle schooler could relate to)?
+Tracie Parks That's wonderful to hear! We have a series of science videos that are middle school level. Tomorrow we'll pick one and write notes in this style and post a link here for you. Thank you so much for sharing these skills with your middle schooler. It will make such a big difference!!
Here you go, Tracie! Happy learning with your 6th Grader! And do let us know how you get on!

Hi please make videos on how to study textbook and objectives type questions
I let my kids choose their favorite topics to practice the skills so they would not associate not taking with tasks they dreaded. My daughter practiced with fashion (she wanted to learn what was involved with opening a boutique) and my son was into a card game (he focused on strategies used in Magic: The Gathering). I guided the practice, and since it wasn't for "school", they were not as unplugged and defensive. It was moderately successful. I'll take what I can get.
😙
I've never seen an example of how to take notes like that, at first they just seemed clunky but now they make a lot of sense. Just awesome. Thanks.
I'm really impressed with the way of explaining how a person should take notes,
I highly appreciate your effort in this regard, great work,
Thanks for producing these guidelines for all of us.
After watching a few Socratica playlists, including Abstract Algebra which also featured Liliana, I’m very happy to embark (binge-watch) another great set of videos! I think it’s easy to just focus on the content of a class and to discount things like note taking and studying, but I think that’s a shame, and I’m really glad that Socratica and Liliana are here to remind us! Keep up the phenomenal work!
This method is truly valuable. I have noticed that I have been able to remember information easier than before.
Thank you Liliana for your excellent presentation.
Awesome video! Thank you so much! I used it on an audiobook, and got to really pin down the main points of the chapter, and I can already tell that it would be far easier for me to teach it to someone after I've used this technique. I'll be using it a lot more often, even though I'm not a college student. The beauty of this is that it applies to anything you want to learn, not just a college class.
I started to follow this method around five months ago. It's so effective :$.
Thank you so much for this and for giving an example we can see, that really helps.
That's so good to hear! We were a little worried that part took so long, but in most videos they just tell you to take notes without actually showing exactly what that means. Thanks for watching through. :)
We'd love to hear what other videos you'd be interested in in this series!
Thank you Liliana Castro for sharing so much valuable information to us- the readers, listeners and learners of course.
oh this is just amazing, I'm a worry-wart so I put myself into a situation that always has me with a large workload. This will definitely help me to lessen my work!
Showing how to do the notes is a huge win. Thank you for that.
Amazing! So glad I found this channel! 💪🏾
This would also work for reading a text book, especially a book from the library that I can't highlight. Plus a section for my own ideas and connections to things previously learned because few things trigger own ideas like reading.
Great ideas - thanks for sharing! 💜🦉
Would you recommend taking Cornell Notes for textbook material of the whole chapter, or by chapter sections.
@@MxDae It's an interesting question! It probably depends on how much of the chapter you are assigned at a time. That way, you take a section of notes as you do your reading assignment. Just continue from there when you are assigned to read more. Good luck!!
Wow thank you guys this has been the best note taking technique explanory video i´ve seen yet
Especially the part where you did like cornell note taking in action (very cool idea)
Even though i´m fasting in the Ramadan months which means i´m very calm
I could not help myself and and got very angry about my past school teachers and asked myself why the heck
they didnt teach those kind of techniques instead of SQ4R, SQ3R acronym driven techniques or
Quotes like: "you dont have learn the mathematical formula by heard, you have to understand it" wow thanks
for the wisdom but HOW CAN I UNDERSTAND IT BETTER or WHATS THE WAY
All the best for you and best wishes
Thanks for this Valuable information.
Loved this technique.
Yeaaah, Socratica!!!!!! All thumbs up please.
Damn, I watched this thing and started using this system... Supplemented by some mind maps this thing is incredibly efficient, thanks a lot for the heads up!
Stumbled upon your channel few months ago for abstract algebra... Thank God I came across you....🥺🥺🥺..You are Awesome..
We're so glad you've found us!! Thanks for your kind comment. 💜🦉
That's what i want which can helps me to take notes. Thank you!!! Right Now, i will use this method for my lifetime study.
I am taking notes of how to take efficient notes...😌
My son is at secondary 2. It's very useful for him how to take note. Thanks for your kindness!
We're so glad you've found our videos! We'll be rooting for your son. :) Thank you for watching!
i am so happy that i found your channel i can take notes so easily
I do that but differently, instead of CUES I do questions for myself and I ask myself about these questions without looking the notes, this helps me to use active recall, also I use spaced repetition when I study my notes.
Una vez más debo agradecer por compartir este tipo de contenido, pues para mi, la edad no es obstáculo para seguir aprendiendo
Sigo aprendiendo de este hermoso canal
Technique is the most important thing in anything we do in life. This note taking technique is so useful for my grade 9th and grade 6th daughters. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing our study tips videos with your daughters!! Making good habits now will help them so much in the future. Be well! 💜🦉
The demonstration helped! Thanks.
Beautifully done teaching video. Thank you Socratica
This video came to me in a really good time. It will jepl me A LOT!!
wow its incredible. i was graduate from bachelor degree. i had never made a note like that. i will use this method when i am master
We're so glad you're going to give it a try! Thank you for watching! :)
Helps to also take notes in multi colored pen. Black and blue to alternate sections and ideas. Red and green for important info or clarifications
This is gold thank you!
Love you socratica ❤
Best channel!
Thank you so much socratica this method has helped me pass my high school finals with flying colors 😇🥳♥️
This is the most helpful Cornell notes guide. I am doing distance learning in law so I just wonder how to apply it in reading textbooks.

I do appreciate how you have me going from one Google search to another. I even found some Feynman lectures on UA-cam. Not that I understand a word he says, but I do adore The Big Bang Theory (and learn a lot from that show) I am able to listen for a bit before my head feels like it's going to explode :')
It was not 100% clear to me, so I Googled "Ques" in note-taking, and came to learn that it means "recall" notes. I use word association, so this makes perfect sense to me.
Recall and Process Questions
. Questions can also be categorised by whether they are 'recall' - requiring something to be remembered or recalled, or 'process' - requiring some deeper thought and/or analysis. A simple recall question could be, 'What is your mother's maiden name? '.

What is also interesting, is that I have both my ENGL 095 binder, and my ENGL-080-95 notebooks in front of me right now. Socratica has always been from Miss Kathy's READ080-95 class, but I am now transferring the Cornell method of taking notes over to my notes for my ENGL095 class. These two classes seem to be working together, and it's been wonderful. It's like ( like being uses as a simile. I got that one from Young Sheldon) having two teachers for one class helping me "catch" up on what I missed out on 40 years ago. They both have been just wonderful.
So helpful. Thank you!
I really love the channel, thank u ;)
Mesmerizing idea
Thanks for this amazing video! It would be very practical if YT let us add notes to the videos we have seen. While notes for videos you're watching for a test, for example, are easy to keep, what about notes for videos on "random" topics that interest you? It becomes hard to store them and retrieve them later.
Thanks for your great lesson
Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for the video!! It helps a lot
Thank you I have been searching this video for over a week now. P.S I learned 100 digits of pi from you
That's amazing!! Well done!! 💜🦉
It's really helpful video, hope that you will make more video for study tips :)
+hathi tran Thank you so much! We're working on another Study Tips video right now - about the Pomodoro Technique! Should be out by the end of the month. Thank you for watching and for your nice comment!
Excellent. I love Socratica.
Excellent video. One question -- in Walter Pauk's original presentation of Cornell notes, he uses the "Cues" column (almost exclusively) for writing questions, in order to clarify meanings, reveal relationships,
establish continuity, strengthen memory, etc. I was surprised you don't suggest this at all, reserving (in the demo) this column for key words, topics, etc. Is there any particular reason you don't suggest putting any questions into the "Cues" section? Thanks again for a great resource...
I really want more of these

this method is great but what would you recommend for taking notes off of your textbooks and see lots of vocab words?

Socratica: Have you thought about a peice on how to write a thesis/story/op-ed? Hope you will.
There are videos about those, but your work always makes more sense and is farther reaching. Cheers.
We are always collecting ideas - thank you! We do have a video in the works on how to write an essay. 💜🦉
thank you so much.
Can someone please answer me which study tool is better; Feynman technique or Cornell Notes for studying textbook? Thanks!
brillante!gracias!
Love it!
Thanks a lot
great channel, but what about those with laptops in class? I guess get a cornell template for word? :D
Excellent..
Hi Socratica, thanks for the video, but I have some questions to ask.
Q1: I don't really get it when someone say "key point". So, at 1:10, when you said to write just the "Key points", does it mean to write "what we think are important information/point" in a paragraph of an important section in a chapter?
Q2: Can I also take notes in outline method format in the note-taking section of the Cornell Notes?
Q3: Every time we take notes in the note-taking section of the Cornell notes, are we supposed to take notes in our own words?
Q4: In some Cornell Note tutorials that I have seen, they tell us to take note of major points of a lecture in the CUE column first then, take note of information that support each major point on the left side in the note-taking section. However, in most of the Cornell Notes tutorials, including your video, they tell is to take notes in the note-taking section first and then write some main ideas in the CUE column. Which style is correct? Cue first or Note-taking section first?
Q5: When you summarize at the bottom, were you summarizing the information from the note-taking section or from both cue and note-taking columns?
Q6: In this video, you taught us to take notes during a lecture. How to take notes with Cornell Notes when reading a textbook?
I hope you will help me clarify. Thank you!
Awsome! +1 Subscriber! Great!
Awesome.
wow! thanks!
You are sure welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
Thank you so much this helped me a lot
You are so welcome! Thank you for letting us know - that makes us want to make more videos!! 💜🦉
Sweet!
Thanks from India
Thanx
berry helpful
Please answer me. I appreciate how you make taking lecture notes so much easier but I have a question. How can I take notes from the textbook using this same Cornell Method when there's no one lecturing behind? Should I get a text to speech converter to work the same or jus read a chunk by myself and then take notes? Will I be able to pinpoint what to put in my notes when I take notes from a textbook where no one else is giving a lecture just like in the video?
We wrote a blog post you might find helpful: khhsocratica.wordpress.com/tag/cornell-notes/
