I like your comments about how cold hardy roses are. Sure, they can require a bit of work to make them look their best, but they also can be quite durable. Our Coral Drift roses, about to enter our 5th growing season with them, are tough little plants. They were covered in a foot of snow and ice back in February 2021 (cold storm through Texas) and they came out of that with several healthy green canes. Same for the hard freeze we had three weeks ago (82 straight hours under 32° F). If pruned properly, these roses are fairly low maintenance.

I have a hardscaping-ish question. I don't know if it counts. I had my overgrown dirt driveway cleared, graded and covered with bluechip gravel (by the house) and asphalt millings (for 1/4 mile btwn the house and the road). Millings are doing okay (besides some recurring potholes), but gravel is becoming overgrown with grass and weeds due to neglect. It's been about 5 years since the work was done. I slightly remember the contractor saying to call him to treat it, but it didn't really register and now everything is a mess. 1) About how often should I be refreshing with gravel, once everything is fixed? 2) I wanna try to pull the big weeds and (chemically) spray the grass and get a new layer of bluechip put down over it - but I don't know if that will be a waste of money. Ideas on how to proceed? 3). If several rounds of spraying and covering with a new layer won't work, what are some alternatives of paying to have the whole driveway done over again? Maryland 7a. Thanks, Jim.

I would love to do chip drop in our hill country drought prone central Texas zone 8A area but we live with the Spector of Oak Wilt. I only buy twice ground cedar mulch. We don’t transport firewood for danger of spreading the black beetle vector and the fungus. Once the oak tree is infected it is a slow death for the tree. I’m not even planting any variety of oak. I’m planting other shade trees native to our area like Big tooth Maple.

Wonderful Q&A as always. When is the best time to transplant iris in zone 7b. Last year we created a retaining bed for the purpose of holding plants till this year. Similar to what you did in your vegetable garden. We have family heirloom iris in there. Grandma bred them to be pink over years and years. Because they mean so much we don’t want them to be damaged. I’d Google something like this normally but these are precious flowers and I trust your opinion.

I have the same issue with privet growing everywhere. I need tips on large almost tree size down to tiny shoots in the ground. I heard their root system is quite shallow but I don’t have a tractor to pull up the small tree sized privet. And you have to get all of the root and keep at it because they will keep growing back. It’s why glyphosate is usually recommended to stop privet.

Hi Jim, love your channel! We live in Greensboro, NC (just down the road!). We have a row of Leland Cypress trees that provide much needed privacy. I’m not sure how old they are, but we’ve lived here for 11 years and they were super tall when we moved here. They have been dying from the bottom, and we’re losing our natural fence. The lawn significantly drops off behind the trees, but I would like to build up with a retaining wall, and put in another row of trees. They would be east facing. What type of tree would be fast growing? Leland cypress, arborvitae or something else? Thanks so much! Denise McDonald

Jim, any ideas on how to deal with leaf damage from a rotary sprinkler head. Several of our large flower beds are irrigated with water from our septic system which has worked well but the rotary sprinkler head seems to be burning the leaves from the mechanical force of the spray hitting the leaves. Any ideas on what we can do to decrease the damage or alternatives to using that septic water but not damaging the plants from the mechanical force?

Hey Jim (and Stephanie). Thanks again for your thoughtful insights to all aspects of gardening.... Question... We saw your video last year about the Ralston Hardy Viburnum. We live in Greensboro, NC in a microclimate that must be at least 1/2 zone less than the rest of the city, more like 7a (definitely not 8a as the new zone map states). Last year, with the 5 degree Christmas event, the Ralston hardy lost ALL of its leaves, and we just thought it was the extreme cold that happened so quickly. This January, we have had one evening of 16 degrees, and stayed below 32 for 2-3 days.... and again the Ralston 'Hardy' has no leaves .... I'm guessing this is what we can expect, so we might move them as it is in our front yard and would like an evergreen plant that stays or can be kept 3'x3 max. Your thoughts? Thanks again for all the information you share! A suggestion: You should take Steph to 'Little Palm Island' while you are in the Keys!

It was planted (prior to finding your channel and learning things) in the ground while still inside its Root Pouch, as per instructions of the selling nursery. I just ripped out a dormant perennial (becoming too aggressive for my garden)next to it, which led to me digging around the Serviceberry and making this discovery. I lifted it out a bit to remove the root pouch, and was wondering if I should just fill back in around it (what I've done for now), or treat it like a plant with a bound root ball and make some cuts. Thoughts?

Fungal communities found in wood chip mulches are generally decomposers, not pathogens. Under healthy soil conditions, beneficial and harmless fungi can out-compete pathogens for space on plant roots. Furthermore, healthy plants are not susceptible to opportunistic pathogens such as Armillaria and Phytophthora, which are often ubiquitous but inactive in well-managed soils."
So as long as you're using it around healthy plants that are healthy and not stressed in some way, it should be fine.

Is it a fools errand to try to grow scabiosa in zone 9 with humidity?

Hi Jim! What do you think about Bradford Pear trees? Why the sudden hatred? Are there any other popular American trees that went from popular to hated in a short period?

      1) They've become a highly invasive plant, when they were originally thought to be unable to reproduce. 2) They have a weak branching structure, making them fragile and prone to breakage. 3) A lot of people hate the smell. Get a nice dogwood or something instead.

They smell bad and split easily. Crepe Myrtles as they are planted in too small of spaces and end up getting Crepe murdered and look terrible after. River Birch, they drop sticks all the time. I am sure there are more. Best to do a lot of research before planting a tree for sure. I have 4 stumps to prove that fact. 😀

    Thank you for the video
    Chip drop is a joke
I even asked Wright company cutting trees and ask them and nothing. All they had to do was to drive 3 miles, but they went to the dump. Waste

Likely someone requested it and then complained about what they got. Dropped in wrong spot or folks thought they'd get mulch looking material, not rough chips with leaves and sticks. Just a few complaints and the companies would decide it's not worth it. It's a shame but I can see how it could happen.

As far as availability goes, I would note that it varies seasonally. If you place a request at the same time everyone else is, you might be waiting for a while. And my house is only like 1/3 mile off the highway, so probably an attractive spot for tree service trucks who would be driving that way anyway.

Post your request when the power companies are trimming the trees conflicting with the lines. I got a bunch and I use it all the time. But I have plenty of land on which to store it and a garden tractor to load and apply it.

Or if there's been a big storm and lots of trees were damaged, obviously there's probably gonna be more available.

Large 30 year old pink striped camellia reverting a lot, billowing blooms, looks like scale on leaves and gold stripe in middle of leaves. Obviously stressed! How can I help this beauty get healthier? 9A. Other camellias next to it seem okay.

    What is barkscale

Basically it's an infestation of small insects that can cover the bark. Look up Introduction to Scale Insects on Google, the University of Maryland has a good article.

What’s your favorite plant family? More specifically, which plant family is most interesting to you in winter? I love your favorite plant of the month videos so I’d like to know which plant family this season is the most interesting to you.

Something is chewing on the limbs of my Japanese maple. I assume it is squirrels. Will this harm the tree? Is there anything I can do to prevent further damage? Kennesaw, GA 7b/8a
