Love this type of video. Just created a new bed in my backyard by spraying the bermuda (which was thin from shade of our fence) and compost+mulched over a large area along our privacy fence. Next step is hoping the bermuda stays away and mapping out the plants, so would love to see a part two or follow up on plant selections/spacing!
Welcome to Texas Jim! Along with everyone else, I really appreciated hearing you think out loud. I heard you mention “low maintenance” as a priority. In my own garden, I have had so much more success with using native plants. I’m not a “natives only” gardener but making that transition in my own garden has been such a game changer in this challenging Texas soil/climate for me.
Love these design concept videos Jim. Would be nice to have on a regular basis…maybe once a season for a different, empty canvass property. Your ideas are so helpful.
Yes, totally enjoy this type of design video. Even for those of us with very established spaces, now and then we are removing, adjusting, rethinking areas and these design ideas are very helpful even though we're not starting with a blank slate. Thanks, Jim!
Her yard will look amazing! I created beautiful beds, also Dallas area, but all the bermuda grew right through the cloth and the mulch. Now I'm trying the cardboard method.
Amazing! These are good friends of my husband and I was so delighted for this video! How fun! Amazing design for a yard of this size! Congrats Nicole and Richard!
Hi Jim 👋 Welcome to Texas! Do we thank you for bringing us this nice weather? 😊 I love watching you plan out a new garden area. Thank you and Thanks to Nicole and Fiancé for sharing their space with us. Will you also be traveling to Louisiana to visit more of your friends? Take care and safe travels. 🙏
Omg Jim you’re in my hometown! Please tell me that you can go to the Dallas Arboretum! It’s beautiful this time of year with the pumpkins. You came during a good week. It’s been torture for the last five months. Tell us what you think of our clay! That Bermuda grass will be so much happier with the trees limbed up. It doesn’t like shade. A shaded patio is so nice in the afternoon. Thank you so much for your insight in a different environment, Jim!
Love these design concept videos - so helpful! It seems that there are so many gardening videos on the internet that address how to care and select specific plants but good design content is harder to find. Thanks for sharing your rough design ideas and especially the thought process behind them 🌱
Hey Jim. Yes that yard is screaming for curve edges. It will definitely soften the look & more pleasing to the eyes. Also I would definitely add tall & mid size varieties of evergreens around the fence area.. layered with flowering shrubs & whimsical grasses. The fence is a real eye soar. But that’s me…
I love this type of video. I wish we had better planned our landscaping. We are lacking paths that would have made watering during the drought last summer more efficient.
Loved seeing you layout a residential space. While I'm excited to see the new garden property evolve, it isn't quite the same as what a homeowner would face in terms of layout and design choices. This was perfect. Would love to see you tackle a few more of these new layout scenarios with different property sizes, challenges, etc. If you are in the mood to tackle a situation with heavy clay, drainage problems, tree coverage that is not full shade but not full sun either, feel free to come to Memphis. Ive got the perfect challenge for you to showcase. I've even begun several techniques to tackle the soil problem: wood chips in one area and tiller radish with crimson clover cover crops in another area to see if it can break up the clay soil any. Talk about an experiment. LOL
I like your design. If there are windows on the side of the house it would be nice to have something to look at out the window. Maybe a climbing vine or even a window box hanging off the fence. Seems like we need a seating area on the far side of the yard - in the shade. Thanks for sharing!
Can you please do a follow up when they have completed their transformation. Hackberry’s are the bane of my existence! I’m constantly cutting down the sprouts along my fence line!
Ohmygoodness ...how I wish that you lived and UA-cam 'd in texas. We could really use someone with your expertise here. Do you really think encore azalea would survive our heat and freezes?
I have two under my awning (by my house). It’s doing surprisingly well! I’m curious what it will do in another year. We did plant it with azalea mix and give it soil acidifier. Honestly I think sun until 11 is good.
YES!! I agree we need someone on UA-cam who can help us design and understand our climate(I’m in San Antonio). Bermuda grass in St Augustine is no joke!
@marciar8909 I'm in san antonio also. Brutal summer, right? I don't know what to plant anymore. If it survives summer, our pretend winter freezes one night and takes everything out.

This was very helpful! More like this please. I have a landscaper coming next week to dig beds in my very small yard. I’m struggling with the design but don’t want to put it off any longer. Thank you for the tips!
Fun. As a Pacific northwester thinking of Texas, I would want several trees. Not huge ones but definitely a way to introduce cooling, relaxing shade. Also, the area BEGS for a water feature. Perhaps a small pond by the seating area--more edges for plants! 💚 Please keep us updated on the progress.
I find this video helpful, thank you. I wish you had spoken more about exact plants that can survive our weather (I’m in San Antonio). I’ve tried various things with little luck, so far the Bermuda grass is the most successful thing, so I’d be afraid to kill it for more garden beds…
This was interesting. More of this as opportunity presents. My space is pretty much settled but I enjoyed seeing that my garden as it accidentally turned out follows your ideas. 😊
This was so helpful! I have always been daunted less by what I plant individually and more about how to turn square outdoor space into plots. It was impossible for me to see how to zone my own front yard until I saw you do it here, thank you! I wish I could use a drone like that. All the google maps I've checked don't show our outdoor space very well. Can you rent a drone? I also liked how you talked about the slope, the moisture, and that kind of zoning that is really important when making some of the most important decisions that are happening even at the earliest phase of a project like this. Thank you and I hope you will do this again!
Look for your county's GIS system, where you can search your parcel by real estate tax ID number. They might have an aerial/satellite view of your land.
Like these types of videos Jim! Having watched numerous of your videos and neighborhood garden tours it looks like we actually live in the same neighborhood! I have a blank slate of a yard myself and would love some ideas and feedback on where to start!
If their soil is mostly clay and/or loam, they should do just fine with the new design. If they have mostly limestone in their soil, like we do here in Central Texas, good luck! LOL! We have a 30'x70' lawn area (Bermuda!) in our backyard that you can't push a stake down more than an inch before encountering rock.
I don't know about Texas but in our area, you have to be really careful about planting trees under power lines. The power company has the right to (and will) come trim/butcher trees they think are ANY danger to the power lines. They have to do that to preemptively minimize the risk of storm damage.
I agree with everyone, this video is helpful for me, too. I’ve inherited a garden that needs some design help. If Nicole has a channel and is going to video building their garden I sure would like to follow along. Can you provide her social media info?
Ugh, Bermuda. Spraying is only way to eliminate it where not wanted unless you want to be a prisoner to constantly digging it back out. Leave behind a tiny 1/2" long segment of root when digging out and it will root & regrow with a vengeance. 😣
Thanks for coming to Texas! You came at a good time and brought cooler weather with you! I hope we get to see this develop even more!
Yes! Love this video!! Please take us along for more designs you might be creating!!!
Lots of us Texas gardeners will be interested in seeing how this goes. Texas has its challenges with weather and high ph soil and water.
These videos are super helpful. Most of these we can apply to our rectangle yards in any zone. Always picking up new ideas from these.
Welcome to Texas! I think you brought the cooler weather with you. 🙂
For all who have been affected by the massive hurricane 🌀 Helene stay safe. You are in my thoughts and prayers. From the Texas Gulf Coast. 💜🙏💜

Love this video! I think so many people can relate to this as this is probably how their yards look. I know mine does 🙂
Very helpful to see the thoughts behind the process. Thanks
Love these design concept videos Jim. Would be nice to have on a regular basis…maybe once a season for a different, empty canvass property. Your ideas are so helpful.
You need to do more of these kind of videos! This was so informative and so much fun to watch!❤

Great to see your thoughts. More of these type videos, when you get the chance, is extremely helpful. Y'all are doing a great job, thanks.

Yes, more videos like this.
Yes Jim this type of videos are very helpful! Thank you.
What a great garden canvass for creating garden areas and rooms!
Yes very helpful! There are not very many videos like that.
Jim,
Would love to see this garden as it progresses. 😊
Yes Jim. I love these design videos. I learn a lot!

I'm just starting to work on my back yard, and this has given me some ideas.
Thank you!
Thank you for another awesome video! I really appreciate how diverse your videos are. I’m always learning something new!

More videos like this please! Very helpful
Yes, as always, very helpful video. Love the “low maintenance - high impact” approach.😊
So helpful! Thank you Jim!
Love this type of video! Would definitely watch more videos like this if you made them.
NIcely done! Great info for a fledgling designer like myself
Interesting and helpful. Even as a reminder of thingswe may have "misplaced" in our pea brains. Thanks.

Great video! I got several tips for my yard and appreciate your explanations about the reasons for your design. Please do more of this type.
Yes, very helpful to see the big picture starting from scratch.

I would love an update in the Spring.

Love garden makeovers! How can we follow along with the changes?
I live in the Dallas area and Azaleas will not do well in full Texas soon. 7:00
Great ideas, Jim.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
If you’re ever back in DFW please come visit our garden. 😊😊😊 originally North Carolinians 😊
Ohmygoodness ...how I wish that you lived and UA-cam 'd in texas. We could really use someone with your expertise here. Do you really think encore azalea would survive our heat and freezes?
Yes, against that foundation. A little sun and cold protection there

Crazy! I just did the same thing. Next is figuring out what to fill in. Excited to follow the journey.
Love it exactly what I am doing!!
Always great information
Great video! Would like more information on the best way to remove large patches or all of the lawn.
Would love to see you do more of this. Even from photos. Just WWJD - What Would Jim Do with a space?
Thank you Jim. 🌺💚🙃
How helpful. I hope in some time there is an after photo. 😀
Good project!

Ask the neighbors if they care that the couple could paint the fence with pipes all black…or dark grey…the plants could really shine then.
This is great ….. would love to see what she will put in here !
Cool!😊
Absolutely loved this design video!
Would like to see more design videos …… especially for problem areas like slopes and dry shade areas.
Absolutely love this type of video!
Great video and extremely helpful.

Is that just regular spray paint or is there a “special” type used for this purpose? Looking to do the same. Great vid. Thank you.
Question, how do you get rid of the grass close to the tree? Would you still spray? Hand dig? I have a tree with grass up to it and would like tips.
We will try to overlook your dubious taste in soccer clubs. 😄
Very helpful

Or you could get army worms like we just did 😂 I was actually grateful- they weeded my garden beds of Bermuda! 😂
