Perfect time of the year for Fort Lauderdale! Three places you may want to see on your way back (if you haven’t been there already)… Morikami gardens (I believe that’s Boca) butterfly world (delray) and wakodahatchee wetlands (delray also.. it’s a natural wetland preserve with a boardwalk to walk through. It’s amazing). Have a fun and safe trip!

One of the reasons so many like this channel is that you aren't a gatekeeper. In so many Facebook groups people get jumped on for how they do something. To each his own! And we can learn from how others do it to improve what we do.

For those of us in old, dense, city neighborhoods, another reason to grow food in raised beds is to avoid lead and heavy metals in the soil (lead paint/leaded gas exhaust/etc). I’ve read that fruits (like tomatoes) don’t pull as much from the soil, but leafy greens can pull quite a bit.

Hey Jim I have a question for next week. Our 17 year old chow/husky mix just passed on this week and we buried him in a clearing in a wooded space behind our home. Filled in his grave with equal parts native red clay soil, pine bark soil conditioner, and compost. We want to plant a japanese camellia there to mark his grave with a permanent fixture. My question is, will there be any issues with putting the camellia in right now? Or should we wait some time for the natural decomposition process to do its thing? The body is about 4 feet down with 3 feet of the dirt mix above him. The camellia is a propagation (I learned from your video) so the roots only go about 6 inches down as of right now. Thanks in advance jim!

After being stuck in the house for that freeze and snow, I had to get out to a local nursery. I’m in 7b SETN. I purchased a lemon golden thyme. My question is should I protect it outside? It’s already planted in the ground because the nursery owner said it has been outside since last season. There’s lots of new growth but it’s still quite small. I’ve never grown lemon thyme so I’m not familiar with it or whether it’s different from your average culinary thyme.

Raised bed question. About 2 years ago I was able to I moved to a home with land to garden. The soil where gets the most sun for my Vegetables was red clay concrete and full of crabgrass. I knew I wanted to work on the soil however I was a bit impatient especially growing tomatoes and peppers! So I covered a 4ft by 8 ft area with cardboard (after I sprayed) I then layered leaves pine straw twigs etc then covered that with about 2-4 inches of wood chips covered that with 6-8 inches of compost. I made a temporary waddle fence to help hold in the soil. So technically a raised bed but my plants should be able to reach native soil. After all that my question is am I compromising my fruits nutrient? I am hopeful to plant my big garden this year after lots of work on the soil!!! I followed all of your steps and I can finally dig in it! Thank you for all that you do!

I'm in South Carolina zone 8B. I tried winter sowing last year and it was a bust. The temps here are so sporadic that the seeds germinate early in a warm spell and then are killed by a frost. The things that have sprouted are not viable to plant outside when they do because there's a lot of winter left so you have to transplant and keep inside. It's better just to wait and start them inside.

Question: Rolesville, NC - 8a. Starting cutting flowers from seed in a non-heated but insulated garage. Night temps on 30ish degree nights and below get around 50-55 degrees inside. Should I still rely on the germination heating pad to provide any warmth after they have already germinated 1:50 ? The pad is regulated by a thermometer placed in the soil. Also, is starting seed earlier than expected 3:25 bad for the plant in any way if I still plan to transplant during the normal time frame? - Knowing that repotting a few times may be necessary until it's time to begin hardening off.

Just finished watching your February gardening video posted today. Regarding mulch, I can't seem to find any triple shredded hardwood mulch. The best I can find locally and have been using for almost three years is a hardwood mulch that claims (a) made from pure virgin hardwood material, (b) double ground to 1.5" shred, and (c) composted in windrows. (a) and (b) sound good, but I have no idea of the benefit of (c). Any comments about that?

I’m gonna third and fourth getting YT Premium. It’s the only social media I’m on (and the only one I pay for)!
    Gardening related question:
I’m in Saint Louis, MO zone 6b (now 7a I guess). My home is at the top of a south facing slope and I have a 6’ privacy fence that goes against the backline of my property. Behind that fence is a bit of a no-man’s land with fairly moist soil and silver maples galore. It then slopes back up to the neighbors house.
In that no-man’s land, I have about 6-8’ of plantable space that I’ve cleared to make a mid-story mixed shrub border. I would consider this area part-shade to full sun (season dependent). I very much want this border to serve as an almost no maintenance backdrop that grows 3’-10’ above my privacy fence so that the neighbor is sufficiently screened.
With sometimes harsh St. Louis winters and scorching summers, any idea of what types of specimens you consider?
I’ve thought of cephalanthus, viburnum dentatum, itea, etc. it would be ideal to try and establish some kind of evergreens into the mix but don’t want a row of arborvitae soldiers.
    Open to your thoughts here!
P.S. - we’ve done two consultations together! So excited to show you progress after this season with the lower patio done!

Hey Jim, I have a lot of autumn olive in my backwoods area that I plan to cut down. How long must I wait to plant other shrubs there? I heard its roots' toxicity affects neighboring plants, much like black walnut.

My dusty miller doesn’t look half bad here in Fuquay Varina in late January. I expected them to die back to the ground. Should I cut them back anyway? It’s my first year growing dusty millet.
    Thanks, Tony A

Question for this week: is it stressful on plants that are heavily budded up to be planted? I know you say to enjoy flowers on the plant while it’s potted but I wasn’t sure if that applied to budded up plants. Asking because I planted a dwarf tibouchina in 9b central FL and it’s been drooping. It seems to respond well to water and I replanted it just in case but I wasn’t sure if this was an unusual reaction for a budded up plant to be stressed after going in the ground. This plant blooms virtually year-round here as well if that matters.

What can I do to keep my Colorado Blue Spruce alive? 8a, North Texas. I've accepted they "can't" grow here. But I saw some at a local box store during Christmas and I had to have one. I've been enjoying it since late November, but I'm 99.9% sure it's going to die in the summer. What can I do to increase my odds of keeping it alive? Same question for all the other zone pushing conifers.

Regarding raised beds, would they still be less beneficial than in-ground, even if the native soil is open to them underneath? Zone 9 Ireland.

Hi Jim! I’m about an hour away from you in the Triad. I have a Forsythia (maybe multiple-I didn’t plant) that is massive and has stopped blooming. I’m guessing it doesn’t bloom bc I just let it go in lieu of trimming. How would you go about tackling it to get it back into shape and blooming? It’s gotten a wisteria somewhere in there now and I need to cut it back and get rid of the wisteria. Thanks!

I don’t know if you have answered this question or not, but I bought some amaryllis at Costco and they had wax on them. What is the reason for them having wax? The directions said they don’t need to be watered. I planted them before Christmas and they’re still only like 2 inches tall. I’ve seen other peoples amaryllis blooming by now. Mine seem to be very slow. Are they slower to grow and bloom because of the wax?

Those don't get planted. They bloom as is with wax. Take wax off and plant after they have bloomed if you want to keep them

I agree with the UA-cam red thing. Back in the day you could get away without it but now youtube just shoves ads down your throat (thanks capitalism for making corporations seek infinite profits and therefore making our lives slowly worse over time)

      I so agree.
America needs to re-regulate. That's how the greed got out-of-hand in our marvelous nation; remember when we had a healthy, fertile, viable middle class? Post-war?
It wasn't only war -- it was REGULATIONS.
If you hear against all regs, it's a bunch of people either being selfish or short-sighted (not thinking about the long-term effects) or, they are being paid by (self-focused) corporations, companies to push against regulations.
Well-thought-out regulations are the way to have a prosperous society, rather than an obscenely rich teeny crust at the top, only.
