    You have a knack for making excellent tutorials. I live at 5000 ft and def had to change out the jet. I’ve owned several other predators and never had the patience or courage to change out the jets myself but I did just that with my new predator 5000 thanks to you. I nailed it the first time with all your little helpful comments along the way and it was just the right length without a whole lot of unnecessary gab. Thank you so much!

    I camp at elevations over 7,000 FT. Most of these generator videos are done near sea level, and therefore, their performance is optimal. So, any review seen on a generator should take into account elevation before purchasing. I recently returned my Predator 3500 as it would not run my AC in my camp trailer at high elevations even though many videos showed it would. Basically the videos and reviews i watched were all performed at elevations below 3,000'. I upgraded to this model and put in the 7000 FT jet, and the generator is able to run my AC now. Additional jets for different elevations was a brilliant move for Predator.

      Get a Soft Start unit from MicroAir and it will really help when your A/C starts (reduces starting current dramatically). With those on both my units I can easily run two A/Cs on my smaller 3500 Predator. Not much else though...😄

    I've owned a 3500 Predator for several years with some needed upgrades (mainly the BIG tire kit)!! I actually used it while camping in Mammoth at 9,000 ft. without rejetting and it got the job done!! Using a top quality NGK Iridium plug helped as did increasing air flow a bit.
    People were shocked that I didn't need to re-jet...although I admit it would have run a bit better and more efficiently. Last trip, I think the plug began to foul and it ran rough...😄
    NOW, with the new 5000, I plan on running propane so I won't need to worry about re-jetting, but it's nice to have your awesome video to do it if needed! VERY well done...thanks for avoiding annoying-and unnecessary- background music! 👍 I realize that I will lose about 20% capacity at that altitude though, plus the lower propane rating too. Hoping I can figure on about 3,000 running watts, my A/Cs both have SoftStart capacitor devices which really helps!

    By the way, if you don't have the shallow 12mm socket, just stuff a small piece of paper towel in the socket. Voila. Shallow socket. Or drop a 12mm nut or smaller in the socket.

      If I remember correctly I think it said 0-1500 for ideal performance. I find most handle up to about 3500 pretty decently. But i travel up and down. If I stayed some where then I would reject. But I Have been single propane more and more and no jetting required 👍🏼😀

    Thanks Johnny, great video! But for those with even medium size hands, dont fool yourself this is not easy. Getting the screws started for the plunger bracket (6:30) is a major PITA. Ive been at it for nearly an hour and my hands just don't fit in there to get it started. By the time I do the contortions to get in there, I cant see nor can I feel to get it started. Im frustrated enough now that I am considering pulling the carb completely (that might be "fun", or even worse). In any case, I walked away to cool off before my language set the shop on fire :-)

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  5 місяців тому

      lol been there. Defiantly walk and take the 10 mins..lol. Use a towel and then get a screw driver bit that’s maybe medium length you can use as a small finger driver. Do the front first just to get it started. Hope this helps. And pulling the carb isn’t bad just take off the least amount as possible and slide it back and rotate.

    • @user-fk6cr3rx5r
      @user-fk6cr3rx5r 5 місяців тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends That is exactly what I did, and the walk away did the trick. BTW, I was using your towel suggestion from the word go, and it saved me endless frustration. Got it all back together, and it ran great... BUT I seem to have a leak around the carb. Put it back in "storage" mode, and set it aside for the night. Guess Im tearing it down again tomorrow to see where I went wrong. I dont THINK it is the o-ring, but ya never know.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  5 місяців тому

      @user-fk6cr3rx5r The towel always saves ya…!! Just loosen it and give it a twist and wiggle and see if that will seat everything correctly. I have had that happen as well and sometimes the loosen and twist and wiggle thing works if you follow me lol. Good luck

    • @user-fk6cr3rx5r
      @user-fk6cr3rx5r 5 місяців тому

      First Ill add a trick that I used. Took it apart again, and put it back together to ensure I had made no mistakes. Used my phone video camera to check that the o-ring was not mis-seated. This was a major help. Figured I had the problem nailed. Nope, still leaks like a sieve.
      EDIT: Returned first unit to Harbor Freight, they stood behind it with no hassle. While I was initially kinda torched that the first unit was leaking raw gas, I was very pleased with how HB handled the issue. So I exchanged - new unit came home - tested first without changing the jet. It ran find, but was clearly running rich. Changed the jet (using the iphone video to initially spot the o-ring mis-aligned BEFORE I put the whole thing back together. Tested, and this time the cabinet interior is dry as a bone. It appears that the first unit had an issue - perhaps a sticking float??
      In any case, your video was extremely well done, and no doubt saved me a bunch of time with the towel suggestion and in general. Thanks for putting it out there! Generator is currently running some break in time pushing a 1500 watt space heater. Very happy with it now. For me, right size, right features, right price.

      @user-fk6cr3rx5r did you loose a oring on the bottom side? Not where the bowl goes but when you remove the bottom actuator ? Can you find the leak?
      Around the bowl or out the bottom.
      Isolate the leak in one of the two locations

  • @ArmatisReviews
    @ArmatisReviews 15 днів тому

    I did this twice. The first time when I set the switch to gasoline then gasoline would just start leaking out from the bottom of the carb where the needle is. Just open leaking. So I tore it all down again except I didn't take the jet out. I reassembled everything and now the gas doesn't leak out of the bottom when I turn the switch to gas but the generator started running and it would start dripping gas from the same place again when the generator runs. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Brand new Predator 5000w generator. Thank you for the video.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  14 днів тому +1

      Check oring make sure no cracks or kinks and see if leak is around bowl or the bottom where jet is that way you can find problem area

    • @ArmatisReviews
      @ArmatisReviews 14 днів тому

      @@johnnysweekends Thanks. I checked the Oring and it looked fine. I could see like faint wetness around the bowl where it connects to the carb but no active leaks. Nothing running down the bowl actively. It's always coming out of the bottom where the 12mm bolt, plunger, needle, etc. are. I am not a mechanic by any means but it just seems weird the 2nd time it didn't leak when I switched to gasoline but started leaking when the generator ran.

    I wonder if the factory jets these differently depending on where they are to be sold. I have the super cheapo 1100 watt predator. I am in Colorado and live at 5300ft and write this post camping in Roosevelt National forest at 8800 ft. Stupid thing still starts on the first pull. Measurable loss of available watts for sure. For the run ability and performance I do get at both altitudes I would not even consider re jetting this particular model. Maybe larger units are more finicky.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  11 місяців тому +1

      A lot of times you can leave the stock jetting depending where you go and how long you stay there.
      Running at higher altitudes will increase carbon build up on the piston crown, valves, and exhaust all the way to the spark arrestor. Now this will take several hundred hours but can cause premature failure and also plug fouling more often then if the fuel mixture was leaned out

    • @jellybeansupra
      @jellybeansupra 11 місяців тому +1

      No way they jet it based on where it's being sold, that would be far to difficult. They get it "close" for all altitude scenarios. I rigged up a wideband o2 sensor to read actual lambda readings. At 5,280 feet on my 3500 with a 68 jet the generator was actually running lean. I now have mine jetted for e85/e90. On a 110 main jet my generator is at .80 lambda which has been working great so far.

  • @scb1677
    @scb1677 2 місяці тому

    Great video. I must be doing something wrong, even with the great instructions. I've done mine three times. The first time it ran, but I had a leak. The next time, I left the jet in place and just reset the bowl. Now it won't start. So, I took the bowl off a third time, put it all back together...and it won't start. The plunger is working, pulling the propane stop down like it should, but I don't think it's getting gas. I am at 2300 feet, and installed the 2000-3000 jet. I ran it on propane for a few minutes just to check if it was something else and it started right up. Any thoughts on where I went wrong? The needle above the jet is installed fat side down. I will probably reinstall the original jet tomorrow to see if I can get it running. I'm not sure what else to try...

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 місяці тому

      Hmm odd, I didn’t have a problem with a small leak on mine the first time but real easy fix and that was just loosing the bowl and a small twist to get in a seated position.
      Maybe make sure the jet wasn’t plugged with debris from packing or something.
      Don’t want it to be plugged.
      Did you run the generator on gasoline before doing the jet change just to make sure it ran on gas correctly before messing with it?

    • @scb1677
      @scb1677 2 місяці тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends That was the big mistake I made...only running on propane first. But I do think there was a problem with the fuel regulation. The jets were clean. And I don't think I messed anything up. I did it for a fourth time today, and put the original jet back in. It ran, but surged like crazy. That makes me think the 2000 -3000 ft jet starved it completely, and the 500 ft jet still wasn't getting quite enough fuel. So, I think the problem pre-existed me. Thankfully, Harbor Freight exchanged it even though I told them I changed the jet out. The upside is at least I have lots of experience now. Thanks again for the superb video.

I finally got it to run after a few hours but only if I hold the choke in a specific spot, and even then it sputters. I exchanged it for another unit.
