Benedict Cumberbatch said he wanted to play Smaug more than anyone because he his dad read him The Hobbit when he was 6. He actually said that this is technically a secondhand performance because he based it on how his dad acted it out when he read the book to him. But he was given even MORE by Peter Jackson when he asked Ben to also voice Sauron The Necromancer. Also Benedict made the absolute right call (and yes it was his idea not Peter Jackson’s) to play Smaug not just with his voice, but with performance capture. His body and facial expressions gave so much life to Smaug and made him so much more terrifying. And Peter made the right call when he had Benedict read his lines in black speech as Sauron backwards because when they played them forwards it sounded unnatural and very intimidating.
*”His teeth are swords, his claws are spears, his scales are shields, his tail is a thunderbolt, his wings are a hurricane, and his breath is death”.* That is how Smaug is exactly described in the book, and that’s exactly what Smaug feels like in this movie. If you watch the special features of this movie (and you absolutely should they’re amazing) you’ll learn that by the time Tolkien wrote The Hobbit dragons were not really thought of as scary or as formidable in fantasy literature. He wanted a dragon that felt like they used to be thought of. As unstoppable forces of nature and incredibly cunning, psychopathic, and nearly unstoppable enemies to fight against. And he absolutely achieved it with Smaug. For me he is the greatest evil dragon in all of western fiction.
Glaurung is my favourite as an evil entity with a voice, the story with him in The Children of Hurin is so interesting to me. Overall, there's no beating Ancalagon the Black though! Hopefully one day we might see them on screen, that would be quite an experience.
@ true in terms of personality and complexity there’s no dragon as intelligent or as sinister as Glaurung. But he was pretty small and defeated almost easily.
The way they say Smaug in the film is correct, the way Achara says it is incorrect. Tolkien was often influenced by other languages, particularly norse languages in both old and modern form. This contributed to how Smaug is pronounced.
The way they had Bombur run in the scenes where the dwarves are running for the house is they put the actor who played him in running shoes, instead of heavy dwarven boots!!😂😂😂
Fun Fact: Bard’s two daughters are played by Mary and Peggy Nesbitt, the real-life daughters of James Nesbitt who plays Bofur ( the dwarf with the hat). Also, talk show host, Stephen Colbert and his family makes cameo appearances as Lake-Town residents. Peter Jackson also reprised his cameo as the carrot munching resident of Bree who was also in the Fellowship of the Ring years ago!!!
I remember reading that these movies relied much more heavily on CGI compared to The Lord of the Rings. Ian McKellen reportedly found it so frustrating that, during the scene where Bilbo meets the dwarves around the dinner table to plan the heist, he broke down in tears. The lack of other actors to interact with and the reliance on a green screen made the experience incredibly isolating for him. Happy New Year Everyone I hope you have a amazing Year.
They literally said Thrór gave one of the SEVEN to Thráin. "Three rings for the elven kings under the sky. SEVEN for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone. Nine for mortal men doomed to die"
15:41 White deer hold a place in the traditions of many cultures. They are considered to be messengers from the otherworld in some Celtic mythology. The white stag is a representation of Thranduil projecting himself into the forest and letting the dwarves know that they were in his realm now, hence the reason Thorin shot at it.
The correct pronunciation of Smaug is the one said in the movies. The actors have said so, even Martin Freeman said they all thought it was smog until it was decided otherwise. Apparently Tolkien was recorded as pronouncing it this way. “Enjoy the a & the u”-Luke Evans (Bard). “It feels more chewy, it’s a bit more sensuous”-Martin Freeman
These books and movies are great. I do think it helps to realize that the "magic" in these movies is not the same context as like Harry Potter or something like that. Tolkien's universe has very religious overtones to it. Their is a creator God (named Eru) to the series that is the all powerful, Holy being. Like when Gandalf says in the fellowship " I am a keeper of the secret fire" while facing the Balrog, what he is basically saying is that his power comes from God. There is much more to the lore in these stories that make them even more beautiful when you dig a little deeper.
Oh my god is this real? I’m a new subscriber and yesterday I watched all of the LOTR reactions and the first Hobbit movie and I was so hooked. It’s a gift that today there’s a new one. Big fan already of the channel. I’m so high rn wtf
You guys should use captions. That way you might not miss very obvious lines like “What happened to the ring? One of the seven given to the Dwarf Lords?” And then proceed to wonder if they’re talking about Sauron’s ring.
Half of a passing comment about which ring, acknowledgement there were more than one ring, and then a follow-up question about whether they all had a similar power set (which is a perfectly fair question, unanswered anywhere in the movies). Not all nerds are cool, some of you are useless.
I had a bet going on this one, so thank you so much for the win on the line "No one makes me bleed my own blood." Also, LotR is roughly 1200 pages long (had to condense the text for three movies) versus The Hobbit at about 300 pages (had to expand the text for three movies)
00:00:50 - It looks more CGI because the movies were shot on digital cameras, instead of 35mm film, and optimized for high-frame-rate 3D. So they wanted the smoothest and most 'digital' looking imagery to blend with the CGI. It looked amazing in 3D, but sadly they never re-processed the imagery to look its best for 2D.
Bolg is Azog’s son. In the source material, Azog was killed by Thorin’s cousin Dain the Iron Foot in the Battle of Azonbulizar some 150 years prior to the events of the Hobbit. Azog is a Mordor Orc who is a servant to Sauron. Sauron came to Azog and enlisted his aid in exchange for Thorin’s head. That’s why Azog is so defiant and fearless when talking to the Necromancer. Sauron could’ve easily struck down Azog with his powers if he wanted to, but he knows that in his weak state, Azog is a far too valuable ally to waste who provided Sauron with an army. That’s why rather than kill him, he simply keeps pressing the more important task at hand on Azog about death to all rather than a personal vendetta against two adversaries. I always find it fun watching two villains begrudging debate over their agendas when they are supposed to be working together!!!
many of the words Tolkien chose were word play on real-life words from earlier forms of English. I believe Smaug is from an older form of German, and *is* pronounced with the diphthong (not smog, but smowg, like in the film.) Early English had a lot of Germanic influences.
There is a great video of Benedict Cumberbatch doing the motions of Smaug as well as the voice. It's here on Y.T. Great reaction guys!! As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Wait.. what, they saw the first movie An Unexpected Journey right...? Even if they didn't remember the opening in Fellowship of the Ring (where the dialogue clearly says "they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made, in the land of Mordor") they could've remembered that in Unexpected Journey is were they saw Bilbo getting/taking the ring in Gollum's cave (the one ring).
You have to remember the ring wants to be found. Remember, Gandalf said that golem loves and hate the ring much like he loves and hits himself is a sacrifice to carry you, though you will have a longer life by holding onto it. You slowly deteriorate almost becoming an addict. Damn Gandalf you gambling ain’t you wizard… he will help us or he will kill us?
I do love seeing Achara and Kristen now fall in love with the series, sadly just 1 film remains :) but it is going to be a fun watch as they all have been. It is lovely to see someone fall in love with these trilogy's for the first time
As someone with a heavy Southern accent, I pronounce it "Smog" because when I try to say "Smauwg" it causes everyone within earshot to burst out laughing for some reason. 😆
Hello jaby family .. if you're reading this I hope all of you are safe in LA with the fire and all going on. Praying for you guys. Stay safe ...🙏🙏 Biggest fan of you guys
I don't know how you're getting the impression the characters are CGI. They're still actors in makeup like the other movies. It's possible a few of them could be motion capture, but as far as I know, it's still practical makeup effects.
I believe that since the Dwarves' map could only be read by moon light, that it makes sense that the mountain's key hole could only be revealed by moon night.
That's not true. The ring just pulls you into the realm of the unseen. Any who are there or can see there can see the ringbearer, the only ones we see on screen are the Ringwraith and Sauron, but Tom Bombadil could also see Frodo in the book, and it was mentioned than any other beings who dwell in that realm, such as spirits, would also have been able to see the ringbearer
If you go to the appendices of the LOTR, Tolkien gives pronunciation definitions (as a Professor of Languages that shouldn't come as a shock) and in Appendix E: Vowels, he states "au (aw) as in loud, how and not as Laud or haw". So "Sow-ron" not "Saw-ron" and "Smow-g" not Smaw-g".
Peter Jackson has arachnophobia, and in the behind the scenes look the animators tried to show Peter what they were doing with the spiders scene.... Peter hardly looked at the screen and said, "Yep, looks good!"
Come on ladies! You saw at the beginning of the LOTR, The Fellowship of the Ring, that seven rings were given to the dwarves. And you were told here, keep listening.
They have one chance, _per year_ . Both the intense push to get there this year and the lack of faith they could always try again sets the film on the 'time bomb road' - ticking, ticking.
From what I understand, and I may be wrong, but, Tokien, being a Linguist and fan of Norse/Germanic/European Mythology based a lot of the lore and languages on the same. Germanic/Norse. Thus, the names "Smaug" and "Tauriel" are pronounced with the Germanic "Smowg" and "Towriel" pronunciation.Like "fraulein" and "Bauhaus" or "Blaupunkt". I saw an interview once. I believe it was the other dwarf actors talking about Kili. One of them said if Middle Earth had a "boy-band", Kili would've been a member. XD
Achara, Kristen, you loved the Gimli reveal where his father , Gloín talks about the picture, but have you realised who Balin is? The fact Gimli talks about him in The Fellowship of the Ring.... Balin, Son of Fundin, Lord of Moria?
когда читаешь - у каждого из нас своё представление в зависимости от воображения, но когда смотрим фильм ОГО! вне сравнении с тем как мы это представляли 💕💕💖💖💗💗❣❣💞💞💟💟
The effects of the dwarven rings was to bring their wearers vast wealth but also increase their greed. And just like all of the rings, they were intended to inflict Sauron’s will over them, but it didn’t work. It’s believed it didn’t because of their natural hardiness and only the more powerful dwarf lords wore them. The sword will eventually be engraved. _Sting is my name. I am the spider’s bane._ Apparently that was a mirkwood centipede, not a baby spider, which is apparently a common assumption. But the way Bilbo went at it is definitely still kinda crazy Bard’s ancestor made the shot, not Bard himself Thrain is dead. He wasn’t even in the theatrical version I realy like the detail of having Sauron’s pupil be his armored physical form Gandalf defeat the dragon? Where’d that come from? Because he’s been telling them not to go in without him? Surely not from when they spoke their assumption that he’s killed a bunch. Because he all but explicitly said he’s never killed any. Basically the entire confrontation between Smaug and the dwarves is movie only. In the book, Smaug figures out the Laketown connection during his chat with Bilbo and then leaves to attack. They needed something to fill in the time for 3 movies. I will say I do like the dwarves getting one up on their biggest enemy Tauriel is movie original. Iirc, Evangeline Lily actually had a condition of not doing a love triangle bc she was sick of doing them. And then they told her they were adding one in 🤦♂️ Movie Thorin has a lot more going for him than Book Thorin. He’s like Aragorn 2.0, with a splash of Frodo’s mcguffin corruption. I believe the latter doesn’t have as much focus or importance placed on him, and is just kind of a grump. I think Movie Balin could be considered his Sam. •I think it was a forgone conclusion that these movies were gonna be much more LOTR after that trilogy’s massive success 1:35:40 Well hold on there. Apparently, Sam has 11 kills in LOTR, maybe 12 if Shelob died. Bilbo by this point has 7, one of which was accidental. Perhaps it seems like he has more because they’re closer together and he’s a bit morevicious sooner.
I think Kristen confused the dragon with Balrog. Sometimes Kristen doesn’t have the best memory or blurs certain details. And the scene was going so fast that I don’t think Achara registered it to correct her. I’m sure they’ll figure it out in the next one
Btw, Stephen Fry who played the Master of Laketown, is a vegetarian. So those "bollocks in mushroom gravy" were not made of meat. Along with Mr. Fry's cameo appearance, there is also a smaller one in Laketown in the Extended Edition (one of the Master's spies) by Stephen Colbert (who is a huge Tolkien nerd). Did you spot him?
I like seeing Sylvester McCoy as Radaghast. He is the 7th Doctor from Classic Doctor Who. Classic Doctor WHO adventures can be found on the Streaming Channel Tubi.
21:45 tauriel is amazing I just don't understand people think she is not in the movie or in the book but it doesn't matter I like her man even kili loves her thanks to Peter Jackson put her in there she is badass
I think it’s funny that achara and Kristen are upset that this movie ended during a climax. “The hobbit” was all one book and they broke it into 3 movies to cuz it was such a long adventure. LotR was 3 novels, hence the 3 movies.
I think the Arkenstone is implied to be, but not stated to be, a simaril of the first age, one that was lost in lava before the war of wrath. Some of these ages are long enough for mountains to raise and fall, which is how the ents may have been seperated from the ent wives, basically a mountain range rose up while they were out for a walk... Very slow walk. 😅
*Fun Facts: The first lake town spy with the eyepatch is actually LOTR superfan Stephen Colbert.* It’s been 171 years since Smaug took Erebor, so Thorin is 195 years old. The rings of power that Sauron gave to the dwarves were supposed to turn the dwarf lords into his slaves just like how the nine for men turned them into the ringwraiths, but the dwarves were too strong willed and too stubborn to ever answer to anyone but themselves so they didn’t affect them. The back door to the mountain was used by Thorin’s father and grandfather to escape when Smaug attacked, they also made the map and key for Thorin. Gandalf wanted Bilbo for the company because 13 is an unlucky number and they didn’t want to risk the quest being jinxed. Gandalf in the book left the group at Rivendell and at Mirkwood in the book for completely unnecessary reasons, ones he didn’t even tell the dwarves at all and didn’t really pay off later, likely because Tolkien knew Gandalf was way too powerful and would’ve taken much of the danger out of the story like how Superman does in the comics sometimes.
Well, the rings DID affect them, increasing their natural greed and the darker aspects of dwarven disposition, but the rings were not able to make them Sauron's puppets.
Benedict Cumberbatch did an amazing job as Smaug 🥰 These movies could have been so much better if the copyrights issue didn't eat so much of their pre-production... had they had the time to actually think through the scenes - basically given it just as much love, care and time as the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Then much of the cgi feel of the camera and cgi characters would either not be there or they would be practical. But because of the time crunch they had to cut corners in places. it really sucks, but I try not to think of 'what could have been' too much when I watch these, but sometimes I just can't help it. 🤷♀
Its frustrating and dumbfounding how they both especially achara constantly talk over information they're giving them and ask questions they've already answered because they were so busy talking over it. Achara really needs to get out of the habit of thinking everything is so simple by them just doing something. Like emotions and obstacles dont matter just do it without any thought of if this will kill me or my friends or ruin the world...
J.R.R. Tolkien pronounces Smaug in old Germanic with the au making an 'aw' sound. I guess you can pronounce it with an 'ow' sound if you want but I would go by the author of the books way
It is so weird seeing Beorn because he is a swedish actor that are mostly known here in sweden for a tv show about police and his character is nowhere near this.
As Gimili said: We dwarves are natural sprinters!
Benedict Cumberbatch said he wanted to play Smaug more than anyone because he his dad read him The Hobbit when he was 6. He actually said that this is technically a secondhand performance because he based it on how his dad acted it out when he read the book to him.
@@thedarkknight2221 Not that small, meant to be much bigger than Smaug by description. I guess he died easily, but tbf Turin is a beast of a warrior!
And isn’t Smaug considered one of the “smaller” and “weaker” dragons?
Scenes with Smaug really elevated this movie
The way they say Smaug in the film is correct, the way Achara says it is incorrect. Tolkien was often influenced by other languages, particularly norse languages in both old and modern form. This contributed to how Smaug is pronounced.
The idea that the actor might be wrong and her being right is wild to me
I've always known it as smorg not smawg. It was until the movie came out I heard smawg (Smaug)
The way they had Bombur run in the scenes where the dwarves are running for the house is they put the actor who played him in running shoes, instead of heavy dwarven boots!!😂😂😂

Hobbit was coming out parallel to bbc Sherlock. What an amazing time that was
The barrels in the water was shot on GoPros. That's why it looks like that.

I love it how the auto captions name Legolas as "Legal Ass".
I mean ..
The ring Frodo and Bilbo carry is the the one to rule them all. It is Sauron’s ring. It eclipses the power of all the others
Gimili did say dwarves are natural sprinters
I'm glad that you are watching the extended versions of the Hobbit Trilogy. The extended version of the third will definitely make sense.
The correct pronunciation of Smaug is the one said in the movies. The actors have said so, even Martin Freeman said they all thought it was smog until it was decided otherwise. Balin is the dwarf that is dead in The Fellowship of the Ring in the Mines of Moria. The one Gimli cries over his tomb.
The actors said that doing the barrels was very fun. There’s a scene where if u pause it you can see Aiden turner (kili) smiling
Need to go watch the behind-the-scenes mo-cap for Cumberbatch when he did Smaug. He really got into it and was even on all fours.

well its still technically enhanced, deepened and echoed

Thrain is dead. He wasn’t even in the theatrical version
I realy like the detail of having Sauron’s pupil be his armored physical form
Gandalf defeat the dragon? Where’d that come from? Because he’s been telling them not to go in without him? Surely not from when they spoke their assumption that he’s killed a bunch. Because he all but explicitly said he’s never killed any.
Basically the entire confrontation between Smaug and the dwarves is movie only. In the book, Smaug figures out the Laketown connection during his chat with Bilbo and then leaves to attack. They needed something to fill in the time for 3 movies. I will say I do like the dwarves getting one up on their biggest enemy
Tauriel is movie original. Iirc, Evangeline Lily actually had a condition of not doing a love triangle bc she was sick of doing them. And then they told her they were adding one in 🤦♂️
Movie Thorin has a lot more going for him than Book Thorin. He’s like Aragorn 2.0, with a splash of Frodo’s mcguffin corruption. I believe the latter doesn’t have as much focus or importance placed on him, and is just kind of a grump. I think Movie Balin could be considered his Sam.
•I think it was a forgone conclusion that these movies were gonna be much more LOTR after that trilogy’s massive success
1:35:40 Well hold on there.
It’s pronounced “Smaug”
No, no, it's clearly "Smaug".
Hol up, I thought it was "Smaug"
“Smaug”
It's "gif"
Easy one... if it sounds like smOg it is WRONG and you should have your longs checked!
The extended versions are rated R I believe, so there is a lot more violence.
-"What if she gives her immortality to save him?"
-"I don't think it's that serious. "
Classic. 😂😂😂
@14:15 No, in fact. Gandalf is only their as an advisor. Thorin is the leader of their party.
*there, even :p
Btw, Stephen Fry who played the Master of Laketown, is a vegetarian. So those "bollocks in mushroom gravy" were not made of meat. Along with Mr. Fry's cameo appearance, there is also a smaller one in Laketown in the Extended Edition (one of the Master's spies) by Stephen Colbert (who is a huge Tolkien nerd). Did you spot him?
2:34 Gandalf is the keeper of Narya, the Ring of Fire, as Galadriel is keeper of Nenya, or the Ring of Water.
Third one is the hobbit the battle of the five armies
That's why I love the battle of the five armies it doesn't matter what people say
Being a similarl that was on the crown of morgoth for so long, might be why it corrupts those in its presence. IMHO
Smoke the stupendous
Smoke on the water, the fire in the sky
Actually he did later tell he defeated the necromancer
Well, the rings DID affect them, increasing their natural greed and the darker aspects of dwarven disposition, but the rings were not able to make them Sauron's puppets.
yay movie night with my favorite ladies
This is my favorite of the trilogy
Benedict Cumberbatch did an amazing job as Smaug 🥰 These movies could have been so much better if the copyrights issue didn't eat so much of their pre-production... had they had the time to actually think through the scenes - basically given it just as much love, care and time as the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
Then much of the cgi feel of the camera and cgi characters would either not be there or they would be practical. But because of the time crunch they had to cut corners in places. it really sucks, but I try not to think of 'what could have been' too much when I watch these, but sometimes I just can't help it. 🤷♀
I❤These Books & Movies!
Sm-ow-ag. Ow like ow that hurts.
You said he should send for the she elf but if you listened he sent the brown wizard to get her lol
My favourite!....✌️❤️❤️.
Beorn is played by the Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt
Not gonna lie I can’t wait when Michael and Kristen watch Star Wars the prequel and the Dave Filoni Star Wars are my favorites
Kristen is adorable.😁
39:12 Not enough is said about the wonderful poetry of Tolkien taken from the books and incorporated in the storytelling of the movies.
Smog = Air Pollution Smaug = dragon
hope the next one is the extended version as well.
Next The Hobbit Extended Edition Of The Battle Five Armie Extended Edition
Let's go I love me some the battle of the five armies
Its frustrating and dumbfounding how they both especially achara constantly talk over information they're giving them and ask questions they've already answered because they were so busy talking over it. Achara really needs to get out of the habit of thinking everything is so simple by them just doing something. Like emotions and obstacles dont matter just do it without any thought of if this will kill me or my friends or ruin the world...
1:12:32 Yes Achara 😂
J.R.R. Tolkien pronounces Smaug in old Germanic with the au making an 'aw' sound. I guess you can pronounce it with an 'ow' sound if you want but I would go by the author of the books way
Y'all Gotta see Benedict Cumberbatch doing the MOCAP for Smaug
I wish y'all had listened to the ending song for this movie loved what ed Sheeran did with it but oh well
It is so weird seeing Beorn because he is a swedish actor that are mostly known here in sweden for a tv show about police and his character is nowhere near this.
