As a guy who uses them mostly for Mountain Biking, a little better low light performance would be nice when you are riding under the canopy of trees and leaves or early in the morning or just before nightfall... However, most videos I see when the cameras are competing in well lit environments, the GoPro still looks better... I think like with all things, people like to cheer for the underdog and it's almost cool to bash GoPro at this point. But give the Devil it's due, without them you would have the other camera's. I like my GoPro. My footage almost always looks great and although I have considered moving over to a different camera, for my use case, I have yet to really find a reason. I have only had one GoPro that had technical issues, not turning on, stuff like that... All the rest have just worked. So I will be sticking with GoPro as the low light stuff just isn't a good enough reason to switch..

If GoPro is really thinking low light doesn’t matter, their cameras are for action, they should consider how many of these cameras are used by scuba divers. Action AND low light. I switched from GoPro to the Action 4 last year and I’m never going back.
My eyes kept gravitating to the Action 5 Pro. Even in the scenes where the Insta was brighter, I felt the DJi image was cleaner and more pleasing in general. Great video, as always! 👌

I agree. Action cameras are for bright action but for me i want a small rugged 4k video camera i can take anywhere not just for action but to have the flexibilty to use at night and or low light as well. Action5 hands down, sold my Action 3, have the Action 5 coming tomorrow.
I’d prefer the Insta360 AcePro. The GoPro13 is blend on the color spectrum, the Action 5 still has blurring and hardware or software post-processing garble in the image. Acepro has good color saturation, you don’t see that alising-look along the edges, and the pure-video mode isn’t ramping up a gamma feature or brightness on the final images. The Silicon on both the AcePro and Action5 might be the same, the revised version on the action5 could be a small hardware tweak or an optimized version of the chip and the way it captures photons. It still doesn’t do the Action5 justice, and its post-processing needs to be worked out more because it looks like garble. I think your GoPro13 is exactly as it is advertised, and that’s an action camera without the post-processing. I suspect the post-processing is done more by the hardware than software, and it’s a feature you won’t find on the GoPro, which is probably a blessing more than a curse. It means people will have the freedom to edit footage and re-render it into a better video.

@@neil527 i don’t know if an Acepro 2 is coming out. If i had to guess, it will come in 2025 April, around the time the 360 x 4 was released in 2024. It depends on if a new chip design is in the works at TSMC. If you went with the action 5, i would turn off any settings related to blurring and drop the sharpness down. See if the aliasing effect disappears. Re-render your footage on Final Cut or adobe aftereffects at max data rate and maybe run the video through a filter to take out some of the noise in the image. The flip screen isn’t needed, but if you need something to help you see what you are recording on the fly, it helps…

I'm only 3 minutes in but the Ace Pro 1 is my choice... It's not quite as bright as the Action 5 but the quality of the picture is superior in my opinion. When there is a little bit of light, I almost prefer the gopro over the blown out action 5. It's certainly brighter but looks as though it has the most artifacts. When it gets dark the GoPro just doesn't hold up.. Ace Pro for the win after 3 minutes of video.. lol
As someone who motovloggs, i prefer gopro for day time recording. For the night rides i would definetly love to have the Action 5 for night time recording. At the same time i dont wanna have to have 2 cameras on me. But i really like the gopro for daytime. Either way, its up to the consumer.
Yeah, that's the tough part I think. Most people will not go for two different action cameras for day time and evening shooting. In the image quality test though, a ton of people still prefer the look of the GoPro. I would love to see them do a bit of work to address the low light so you would only need one action camera for bright and low light conditions

I am torn between the Ace Pro and the Action 5. The Action 5 was too over sharpened, and the ace pro too soft. The gopro looked at the sweet spot sharpness wise, but I prefer the brightness the other two bring. Looks like the Action 5 managed the intro shot better, and looked more natural/less red-ish and brighter in some others. But 2:34 the lights / orbs looks way better on the Acepro. Id go with the Action 5, just hope they let us edit sharpness!
This is for sure an extreme low light test, so I really didn't expect much from any of them, but the Ace Pro and Action Pro surprised me at how much they're doing to make those shots work!

So weird how the beginning of this video, the Gopro 13 is almost orange in how dark it is. Glad I got the Action 5 Pro, because I actually do more low light recording than anything- mostly with where my stuff is than when.
@DescubreMedellin I've done a night bike ride, a low light dance circle [very high contrast viewing], and some photos without ever going into Super Night. I'll be recording some outside nightfall dances in a couple weeks but it's been great otherwise.
Low light is important for indoor recording that's for sure especially during travels. Going in and out of markets here in Asia is a classic example. In your comparison and my own tests, just use the Action 5 Pro normal mode will do as it already does very well. No need to even touch their SuperNight mode unless DJI fix it via firmware update. For now I am already very happy with the standard/normal mode in lowlight with my Action 5 Pro. PS. David definitely have the Ace Pro 2 under his table somewhere.. lol!
I think what GoPro should do is make their Black series for action sports.. Then if people do want a camera for travel... Make like a GoPro Gold or something like that which will be a little bit bigger but has a bigger sensor, has better low light and costs a little bit more. They make the smaller camera with hacked off performance, so why not a next level up or not even better but just different.
The new version could be like 35% to 40% bigger with a better sensor then low light could be like 65% better. Cell Phone and Action cameras for the last 5 or 6 years they all used the same senors they are maxed at what they can do all we get in a new version is another lenses or better software give us a new sensor already.
Hi david. You and others have mentioned that cameras have gotten so good it's sometimes difficult to do these comparison videos. I agree and I think it's also why people love low light comparisons because the difference is really stand out in low light. Most cameras including our cell phones look good with the right lighting. So when I'm looking to buy something to supplement my cell phone I definitely want something that's good in low light.
i think normal mode on the action5 is the way to go, even when its somewhat low light. use the nightmode only when there are no artificial light sources left and its dark all the way, like when you enter a cave or a tunnel with no lights.
Really interesting comparison. I love your hot take on GoPro not even competing. This is 100% true and not a lot of reviewers get this. I LOVE my GoPro 12, and I don’t even use it for action! I just call it my “sunny days” camera because I use it on bright sun days, only. And it shines (pun intended) for that. Luckily I live in Southern California! My pocket 3 is my low light camera. And I am about to pull the trigger on a second “action” camera and waiting to see what the Ace Pro 2 brings. But the Action 5 is clearly leading right now. You CAN turn down the texture and noise reduction and EV in the camera and it will match the Ace pro in terms of being too sharp. One thing that impressed me most in this, in all the cams, is the lack of jitter with all the lights. What settings did you use to get rid of them? Super cool! Anyway, carry on, you always speak such truth in your reviews. People are indeed buying action cams for travel and family documentary work. At least I am. Thanks for the great review! David, do you sometimes feel that flip LCD of the AcePro gets in the way sometimes if you vlog, and you want to shoot yourself, yet show viewers what it’s like around you? I feel that for one handed operation the front lcd is way better than having a fancy flip out screen!
Yeah, it's tricky, because the flip screen helps in so many different situations. The one that it's not as good in is if you're quickly going from front shooting to rear shooting, then you have to flip the screen. But low shooting or high shooting and it's incredible. A small front screen on the Ace Pro that's just for framing would be incredible!
@@DavidManningvlog haha yes! I would love it if the ace pro also has a fully functional front screen like that of the Action 5. When cycling I face that problem with the ace pro trying to film myself with a selfie shot and then trying to show others around me. The GoPro comes close to that perfect config with the media mod!
Two things - love that you said “guess” each time but kept all in same columns… ha. 2. You live in CA… lots of us live in the PNW where it gets VERY dark in the winter months, especially when you are are mountain biking and duck into some dark woods. Low-Light mode is essential for good quality video in our neck of the woods. Sorry GoPro… You are now only used on bright sunny days kayaking or skiing.
I have the Action 3 and debating if i should update to the 5. My main and huge concern is the poor low light results of the A3. A LOT of smearing. That's my only reason to upgrade if I would. Anyone please?
Hey David! Unrelated to the video but DJI released a new firmware update for the DJI mic 2 that supposedly tweaked the EQ and makes it sound a lot better. Can you do a video on this with a before and after?
I watched another youtube channel where they did the comparison between gopro and action 5 for the dji mic 2. Action sounded far better. Sound is very important aspect of these videos and that is such a game changer of a feature. To now film in all weather or action scenes and have the battery door closed but using high quality mic. That will top a decent amount of buys list over ace pro 2 higher specs. Ace pro 2 does have a huge bulky built in mic. Which will be very good for when you're close to the camera but still useless when not beside it. So wireless mic is a must.
Definitely prefer the Ace Pro in this one, although the Action 5 also looks good. I just spent 2 weeks in Japan with Ace Pro as my primary night/indoor travel camera. It rarely left Pure Video mode. As I’m reviewing the footage I am continually impressed by how well it handled everything. I’ve grabbed some stills from video shot in dark karaoke bars, and they actually look quite good! Can’t wait for the Ace Pro 2 and I’m looking forward to you repeating all these tests …😂
What camera in this price range would you recommend for filming all star cheer competitions? Often filmed from an area with lights off but stage brightly lit and a distance of about 40' The action 5 is looking pretty good or is there a better category of camera to look at?
I currently own the Insta360 Ace Pro 1 and it's great overall except the focal length. The low light performance seems to be the best of the competition however. The Action 5 looked great, it was brighter but also noisier. I own a Pocket 3 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it and because of the accessories / MIC 2 I'm almost thinking just those reasons I may switch but I need to see what the Ace Pro 2 will have to offer before I make my final decision on a change. I do love Insta360 stuff though, Leica and i360 have been great to work with and customer service has been great as well. They are very helpful. Pocket 3 is my first DJI and I'm happy with it but only owned it for two weeks at this point.
This video is a lifesaver I needed honest footage at night. In my neighborhood it is a little bit scary to walk at night without some kind of a video proof against criminals and the cameras would be helpful
I do a lot of mountain biking at sunset and the gopro looks terrible. Thats why im looking for something better in low light. The DJI 5 looks the best to me. Thanks for making this video!

In the last years, low light performance has become really important to me. I run at night due to my schedule and the Hero 8 I have is not cutting it... And even on 13, it is clear that they haven't done anything to address this. So, if I had to buy one one, it would be the Action 5, hands down. But let me check the internet first... 😂
im using action3, gonna wait for 8 or 10 i guess. they really do a lot of improvement but 3 still good for now. but not in low light unlike on their latest.
Indoor = low light if you don't set up studio lighting. These cameras do get used in situations where you would expect folks to use phones ... even if semi pro/pro preaching is larger sensor mirrorless in such situations.

more important is dynamic range when i am recording tennis in bright sunlight or with clouds on the sky or at night with lights on i want to be able to clearly see the ball and the players without the video seeming darkened
In my opinion Osmo is best. Closer and distant pics are more readable the others. Osmo it’s a good choice to buy today. I am using action cam in dark water. Osmo it’s a good compromise quality to size.

It's weird, but the image of the AcePro is kinda distorted in the 1st scenes. Your head looks square or squeezed but definitely smaller, when you skate backwards further away your body parts ratio is also off, legs are weird. However at the end of the video this applies to the Action 5 footage. Your head looks smaller. I hope I am explaining it right. Anyone else?
the more action cam videos i see, the more i wonder if there's even a single aspect where GoPro is leading... They haven't been innovative, overall quality, overheating etc. isn't the best and for low-light they already gave up from the beginning. Doesn't look like they have any idea what they want their cams to be good at.
I think they're more focused on the daylight game and honestly, their cameras look great during the day and their Log profile is killer to work with. I was bummed this year that their upgrade was mostly filter based without upgrading the sensor and processor. I'm hoping the 14 is a guts upgrade next year!
I use my action cameras professionally. Unfortunately they only come out for a job every 3 months or so-I was frustrated, angry and plain done with GoPro’s because; 1) hoops to connect via WiFi and Bluetooth 2) complicated interface on unit 3) And 50/50 “push record” and hope it records…. They may be focusing on daytime, but DJI has outgunned them in reliability, and simplicity via app or buttons. I left GoPro as soon as I got my first DJI Osmo Action Cam 4 years ago. It should be mentioned in all reviews…
Good point, David. In bright daylight with ND filters the GoPro 12 rules if you are going for that cinematic look. The 13 just automates really simple things to adjust on the 12.
GoPro is going to have to do a lot more than force you to spend grand for a hero 12 with automated lenses and a new stock of batteries with an extra 10 minutes of life if they expect to stay viable. Super night mode on the action 5 might have uses, but regular mode was way better in these tests. If DJI releases a firmware update to address the 60 MBITS limit issue, it totally comes down to the AcePro 2 and the Action 5.

I'm one of those who likes to ride his motorcycle or go for a drive at night when no one else is around and I like to go stargazing. Low light is very important to me and GoPro pretty much shunning low light users just tells me that they are chasing the fake "influencer" market and have been for a long time as they are the ones able to travel often enough to chase the sun.
I definitively need low light. So Action 5 Pro and Ace Pro look good. GoPro is basically out with that performance. That GoPro doesn't want/can't compete in low light is sad.
i dont think thats an argument anymore that action cams are traditionally not for lowlight. There are many action sports in low light like bike rides in a forest etc.. and footage in very unreliable in these cases. Even vlogging in my case indoors is already a lowlight situation and specifically the gopro is just worse here
I guess I never understood why everyone is so crazy about low light comparisons. These are Action Cams. if you want great low light, use a different/camera.

if you make a much bigger and much heavier cam and with short battery life, your cam will also not that worse

Omg the Action 5 Pro is 🔥
I am torn between the Ace Pro and the Action 5. The Action 5 was too over sharpened, and the ace pro too soft.
The gopro looked at the sweet spot sharpness wise, but I prefer the brightness the other two bring.
Looks like the Action 5 managed the intro shot better, and looked more natural/less red-ish and brighter in some others.
But 2:34 the lights / orbs looks way better on the Acepro.
Id go with the Action 5, just hope they let us edit sharpness!

This is for sure an extreme low light test, so I really didn't expect much from any of them, but the Ace Pro and Action Pro surprised me at how much they're doing to make those shots work!

So weird how the beginning of this video, the Gopro 13 is almost orange in how dark it is. Glad I got the Action 5 Pro, because I actually do more low light recording than anything- mostly with where my stuff is than when.
How are You liking the low light quality with the Action 5? I have a Action 1 still and thinking of getting the Action 5 or ACE pro
@DescubreMedellin I've done a night bike ride, a low light dance circle [very high contrast viewing], and some photos without ever going into Super Night. I'll be recording some outside nightfall dances in a couple weeks but it's been great otherwise.

The DJI Action 5 Pro's Field of View was a dead giveaway. Good comparison David!
Low light is important for indoor recording that's for sure especially during travels. Going in and out of markets here in Asia is a classic example. In your comparison and my own tests, just use the Action 5 Pro normal mode will do as it already does very well. No need to even touch their SuperNight mode unless DJI fix it via firmware update. For now I am already very happy with the standard/normal mode in lowlight with my Action 5 Pro.
PS. David definitely have the Ace Pro 2 under his table somewhere.. lol!

I think what GoPro should do is make their Black series for action sports.. Then if people do want a camera for travel... Make like a GoPro Gold or something like that which will be a little bit bigger but has a bigger sensor, has better low light and costs a little bit more. They make the smaller camera with hacked off performance, so why not a next level up or not even better but just different.
The new version could be like 35% to 40% bigger with a better sensor then low light could be like 65% better. Cell Phone and Action cameras for the last 5 or 6 years they all used the same senors they are maxed at what they can do all we get in a new version is another lenses or better software give us a new sensor already.

Hi david. You and others have mentioned that cameras have gotten so good it's sometimes difficult to do these comparison videos. I agree and I think it's also why people love low light comparisons because the difference is really stand out in low light. Most cameras including our cell phones look good with the right lighting. So when I'm looking to buy something to supplement my cell phone I definitely want something that's good in low light.
i think normal mode on the action5 is the way to go, even when its somewhat low light. use the nightmode only when there are no artificial light sources left and its dark all the way, like when you enter a cave or a tunnel with no lights.
Really interesting comparison. I love your hot take on GoPro not even competing. This is 100% true and not a lot of reviewers get this. I LOVE my GoPro 12, and I don’t even use it for action! I just call it my “sunny days” camera because I use it on bright sun days, only. And it shines (pun intended) for that. Luckily I live in Southern California!
My pocket 3 is my low light camera. And I am about to pull the trigger on a second “action” camera and waiting to see what the Ace Pro 2 brings. But the Action 5 is clearly leading right now. You CAN turn down the texture and noise reduction and EV in the camera and it will match the Ace pro in terms of being too sharp.
One thing that impressed me most in this, in all the cams, is the lack of jitter with all the lights. What settings did you use to get rid of them? Super cool!

I'm leaning towards the Action 5. Some shots the Ace Pro looked good but overall, yeah, the Action 5 would be my choice.
David, do you sometimes feel that flip LCD of the AcePro gets in the way sometimes if you vlog, and you want to shoot yourself, yet show viewers what it’s like around you?
I feel that for one handed operation the front lcd is way better than having a fancy flip out screen!
Yeah, it's tricky, because the flip screen helps in so many different situations. The one that it's not as good in is if you're quickly going from front shooting to rear shooting, then you have to flip the screen. But low shooting or high shooting and it's incredible. A small front screen on the Ace Pro that's just for framing would be incredible!

When cycling I face that problem with the ace pro trying to film myself with a selfie shot and then trying to show others around me.
The GoPro comes close to that perfect config with the media mod!
Two things - love that you said “guess” each time but kept all in same columns… ha. 2. You live in CA… lots of us live in the PNW where it gets VERY dark in the winter months, especially when you are are mountain biking and duck into some dark woods. Low-Light mode is essential for good quality video in our neck of the woods. Sorry GoPro… You are now only used on bright sunny days kayaking or skiing.
What was the point of the "Guess" graphic when you put the cameras in the same spot every time?
The problem with the Action 5 is the picture is too blown out under direct sunlight. The Ace Pro 1 is a good compromise.
Just use exposure compensation. Set it to -0.3 or -0.7

I have the Action 3 and debating if i should update to the 5. My main and huge concern is the poor low light results of the A3. A LOT of smearing. That's my only reason to upgrade if I would. Anyone please?
Hey David! Unrelated to the video but DJI released a new firmware update for the DJI mic 2 that supposedly tweaked the EQ and makes it sound a lot better. Can you do a video on this with a before and after?
I watched another youtube channel where they did the comparison between gopro and action 5 for the dji mic 2. Action sounded far better. Sound is very important aspect of these videos and that is such a game changer of a feature. To now film in all weather or action scenes and have the battery door closed but using high quality mic. That will top a decent amount of buys list over ace pro 2 higher specs. Ace pro 2 does have a huge bulky built in mic. Which will be very good for when you're close to the camera but still useless when not beside it. So wireless mic is a must.
Can you do a stabilization test between the cameras?

I just spent 2 weeks in Japan with Ace Pro as my primary night/indoor travel camera. It rarely left Pure Video mode. As I’m reviewing the footage I am continually impressed by how well it handled everything. I’ve grabbed some stills from video shot in dark karaoke bars, and they actually look quite good! Can’t wait for the Ace Pro 2 and I’m looking forward to you repeating all these tests …😂
What camera in this price range would you recommend for filming all star cheer competitions? Often filmed from an area with lights off but stage brightly lit and a distance of about 40' The action 5 is looking pretty good or is there a better category of camera to look at?
I currently own the Insta360 Ace Pro 1 and it's great overall except the focal length. The low light performance seems to be the best of the competition however. The Action 5 looked great, it was brighter but also noisier. I own a Pocket 3 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it and because of the accessories / MIC 2 I'm almost thinking just those reasons I may switch but I need to see what the Ace Pro 2 will have to offer before I make my final decision on a change. I do love Insta360 stuff though, Leica and i360 have been great to work with and customer service has been great as well. They are very helpful. Pocket 3 is my first DJI and I'm happy with it but only owned it for two weeks at this point.
Still waiting for the next firmware update on the Action 5 pro😊
DJI is usually pretty quick about things on the software end. We should be seeing some regular updates soon

This video is a lifesaver I needed honest footage at night. In my neighborhood it is a little bit scary to walk at night without some kind of a video proof against criminals and the cameras would be helpful
I do a lot of mountain biking at sunset and the gopro looks terrible. Thats why im looking for something better in low light. The DJI 5 looks the best to me. Thanks for making this video!

In the last years, low light performance has become really important to me. I run at night due to my schedule and the Hero 8 I have is not cutting it... And even on 13, it is clear that they haven't done anything to address this. So, if I had to buy one one, it would be the Action 5, hands down. But let me check the internet first... 😂
Is it not possible to reduce the sharpness in the settings in the dji action 5? This could solve the problem of the footage looking a bit digital.
The Action 5 looks good, I definitely agree with the sharpness when in night mode.

Indoor = low light if you don't set up studio lighting. These cameras do get used in situations where you would expect folks to use phones ... even if semi pro/pro preaching is larger sensor mirrorless in such situations.
Great review about low light capabilities 👍. But I'm still wondering, why people should use an action cam for low light video, when a smart phone does a better job than each action cam in low light? An a Smart Phone is always ready to use. Maybe, you make an other video and compare Action Cams with a Smart phone in low light,

more important is dynamic range when i am recording tennis in bright sunlight or with clouds on the sky or at night with lights on i want to be able to clearly see the ball and the players without the video seeming darkened

In my opinion Osmo is best. Closer and distant pics are more readable the others. Osmo it’s a good choice to buy today. I am using action cam in dark water. Osmo it’s a good compromise quality to size.
I have liked the ace pro vs OA4 as an OA4 owner, but now the OA5 LOOKS BETTER
on my 2k screen i notice that there is more noise slighly on the action 5, and gopro having less noise in the image even though its not as bright.

It's weird, but the image of the AcePro is kinda distorted in the 1st scenes. Your head looks square or squeezed but definitely smaller, when you skate backwards further away your body parts ratio is also off, legs are weird. However at the end of the video this applies to the Action 5 footage. Your head looks smaller. I hope I am explaining it right. Anyone else?
the more action cam videos i see, the more i wonder if there's even a single aspect where GoPro is leading... They haven't been innovative, overall quality, overheating etc. isn't the best and for low-light they already gave up from the beginning. Doesn't look like they have any idea what they want their cams to be good at.
I think they're more focused on the daylight game and honestly, their cameras look great during the day and their Log profile is killer to work with. I was bummed this year that their upgrade was mostly filter based without upgrading the sensor and processor. I'm hoping the 14 is a guts upgrade next year!

I use my action cameras professionally. Unfortunately they only come out for a job every 3 months or so-I was frustrated, angry and plain done with GoPro’s because; 1) hoops to connect via WiFi and Bluetooth 2) complicated interface on unit 3) And 50/50 “push record” and hope it records….
They may be focusing on daytime, but DJI has outgunned them in reliability, and simplicity via app or buttons. I left GoPro as soon as I got my first DJI Osmo Action Cam 4 years ago. It should be mentioned in all reviews…
Good point, David. In bright daylight with ND filters the GoPro 12 rules if you are going for that cinematic look. The 13 just automates really simple things to adjust on the 12.
You should redo this video! And especially make the comparison of the action 4 and 5 pro , supernight and manually high ISO values! thanks
GoPro is going to have to do a lot more than force you to spend grand for a hero 12 with automated lenses and a new stock of batteries with an extra 10 minutes of life if they expect to stay viable.
Super night mode on the action 5 might have uses, but regular mode was way better in these tests.
If DJI releases a firmware update to address the 60 MBITS limit issue, it totally comes down to the AcePro 2 and the Action 5.

Its 'everyday' lighting comparisons that would be more useful me think's....
I'm one of those who likes to ride his motorcycle or go for a drive at night when no one else is around and I like to go stargazing. Low light is very important to me and GoPro pretty much shunning low light users just tells me that they are chasing the fake "influencer" market and have been for a long time as they are the ones able to travel often enough to chase the sun.
I definitively need low light. So Action 5 Pro and Ace Pro look good. GoPro is basically out with that performance. That GoPro doesn't want/can't compete in low light is sad.

Ace Pro 1 video looks like 30% to 40% sharper with more natural colors. The DJI 5 Pro more lighting and the colors are kinda off.

i dont think thats an argument anymore that action cams are traditionally not for lowlight. There are many action sports in low light like bike rides in a forest etc.. and footage in very unreliable in these cases. Even vlogging in my case indoors is already a lowlight situation and specifically the gopro is just worse here
I guess I never understood why everyone is so crazy about low light comparisons. These are Action Cams. if you want great low light, use a different/camera.

The super night mode on the Action 5 pro is trash, the shapness is way too high. You should have tested the action 5 pro just in regular mode.
I said goodbye to Gopro and bought the new action 5 pro.
