I'm from Indiana and love sugar cream pie!! I make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings and always have to make 2 because there's never left overs!! Glad you enjoyed it!
This Hoosier has been eating this as long as she can remember...my Grams made this all the time! It is more a southern Indiana thing - where my family is mostly from - but they brought it to the Region (aka Chicagoland) when they migrated to work at the steel mills. My sister has continued the tradition and it is at every family function, but we call it Grams pie, even though we know it is a Sugar Cream. 🥧
The damned thing is endemic in northern Indiana, too. So much so that frozen varieties were and maybe still are available at your local grocery. Sugar and fat pie. I grew up on it. It's silly for anyone to quibble about the ingredients, especially the spices. It's a depression era recipe. You include what you have. If you don't have it, it doesn't matter. Just eat the sugar.
I saw this pie at a local deli market store and was immediately drawn to it. However, I did not purchase it ($14) instead choosing to come home and find a video discussing it. After hearing about its rich history of a neighboring state and the interesting ingredients used, I think I'm ready to try it now. Thanks for sharing 🙂👍
I have never heard of this pie and I have lived in northern Indiana since the 90's. I am not a huge pie person though so maybe that is why I have never heard of it. Seems super easy, maybe my boys and I will give it a try. Thanks for sharing!
Not sure if i missed it in your explinations and tips but how do you keep the butter from seperating while its in the oven? All the butter in my pie seperated and pooled to the top. Did i not have the mix off the heat long enough before adding it to the pie crust?
You grew up right across the bridge from me. I live close to Holiday World so I'm sure you know the area being so close to us. Very cool! Small world. However, I've lived in Indiana my whole life, 45 years, and I've never heard of this pie either. Must be a Northern Indiana thing.
there’s a restaurant near us that has that pie, they call it an old fashioned pie. so yummy. i tried to make it once and failed, i’m going to try your recipe! thank you 😊

Hiya! We had this dessert for every holiday and reunion. We called it 'Aunt Betty's Sugar Cream Pie' because she made them for us and they were from scratch, even the crust. She was a kindergarten teacher who would be in her 100's now if she were with us. What I remember most about Aunt Betty was that she did yoga stretches in bed before she got up every day of her life and she was always very deaf. But as soon as Uncle Bill passed we didn't have to shout anymore. She could hear your normal voice. So apparently, she was deaf to his bossiness. He was a disciplined science teacher, and profuse gardener who confiscated many a bag of marbles back in his day. Aunt Betty was woman 'before her time' as they say! Anyways, she would have made this using whatever milk from the cow outside, but her recipe calls for the carnation milk with extra regular milk, no water. Also she used flour no cornstarch and just a lump of butter. On top was always nutmeg only, no cinnamon anywhere. The BEST was eating it warm. She baked all the ingredients in liquid form in the raw homemade crust and didn't use a saucepan at all. It bakes awhile until it 'sets' and doesn't wiggle in the middle. It usually needs a little foil around the crust to keep from burning and a pan underneath. It was the go-to favorite 10/10 dessert we all loved. Rest in Peace Aunt Betty. Love that Pie!
You have found my weakness! Being a born and bred Hoosier I LOVE sugar pie! It's my all time favorite! You naiked the description. I don't know about the nutmeg but I'm sure my mother (Who was born in Altoona Indiana in 1934) never had whole milk in the house, always 2% sonim guessing that is the kind of milk she used. Now you should try an Indiana breaded tenderloin sandwich.
2¢ Chick Yes I remember when they passed it. I've never had it but there is a restaurant in Richmond, Indians named awivks. Apparently, there sugar pie is legendary. They even sell it mail order. I've been tempted on ordering it down here before 😊

If you find a vanilla custard raisin pie, from depression era, I'd like to find one. My dad talks about the one his mother and grandmother used to make (apparently from memory because it wasn't in their old family cookbooks.)
Born and raised in Indiana and never heard of it referred to as Hoosier or Indiana pie or that it was the state pie. Went to our recipe box and found my Grandma Sue's Sugar Cream Pie recipe in less than thirty seconds. I can tell when she wrote it for me it was after my grandfather's stroke and she was trying to make all of her recipes healthier. She substituted whole milk for skim milk and butter for low fat margarine. The higher fat content in whole milk and real butter helps the pie set up so much better and gives a much richer flavor. Recipe does contain sprinkling with cinnamon and nutmeg. She also included variations for chocolate, peanut butter, and coconut cream pie on the back of the recipe card. The recipe for the filling makes more than is required for a standard 8" pie crust. My brother and I have never been fans of pie crust so my grandma and mother always made us individual servings with the left over filling.
As a left coast subscriber, all these midwestern receipes are new to me and interesting, looks like I'll be busy trying to replicate them in the coming weeks. 😁
I really like idea of doing something for every state, something to (hopefully) symbolize the end of quarantine and beginning of travel. My videos next week are going to be about a local food from Ohio, then Louisiana.
For this recipe it didn’t say. I used unsalted because that’s all I had. Usually if a recipe calls for salt you would use unsalted butter. This recipe did not call for salt so I probably should have added a little salt since I used unsalted butter. But it was still good.
This pie looks really tasty... I bet it would be killer with coconut... I’m wondering if there’s a different crust would work... not fans of regular pie crust... (don’t hate me) I was thinking graham cracker or sugar cookie??? I don’t really understand why people get so bent out of shape over what qualifies a pie to called a certain name... seems to me there’d be better things to worry abt... lol I love the idea of making every state’s pie!!! What is your favorite pie?
I think a sugar cookie crust would be good. I don’t understand it either, it’s pretty silly. My favorite fried pie is of course McDonald’s fried apple pie. I don’t think I have a favorite homemade pie.
