What was that Ray Mears quote ? It went something like, a true woods man does not make something too strong nor to weak., Not too fancy or too crude. He makes it just right. Excellent craftsmanship Mitch. - Josh
Thanks appreciate it, i dont think im familiar with that quote, perhaps it was on his canadian canoe trip when he made his kuksa with the beaver on it and kneeling indian? Insane craftsman that one..
This video was so peaceful haha your hand work with that axe is amazing my friend. I have learned much from you in carving.. id really like to show you the spoon and fork set i carved from love mesquite.. it turned out beautiful. Great work on this piece!!
Hey Mitch, i love the commentary on your usual videos but i must say doing one that is heavily edited and only music playing is really fantastic to watch the odd time. What would you say was the most difficult part of this process? Hope you and your family are doing well.
Great job, my brother in Christ! I'm curious to know the brand name of chisels that you use to carve the bowl. I use Marple or Sheffield, passed down to me.
Thanks brother ; ) I use Swiss made Pfeil gouges, they're gouges because they have a concave curve on the edge, chisels are flat. Those tools you have are amazing Marple and Sheffield.
What type of wood is that Mitch ? I am in the process of making my second kuksa from a real mottled piece of birch burl and man I am having a heck of a time !. The wood removal is so difficult...any advise ?. Although burl has great swirling design I'm guessing it's not a good choice for a novice Lol....awesome bud
Oh man fantastic video and great work! I’d like to enjoy a hot cup of coffee out of one of them. I too enjoy carving in wood. You needs a Spills Plane. If you never heard of it check it out, you would dig it 🤙🏼
I think you may want to start learning some knife safety. While you were carving with the knife you made me cringe watching you cut toward yourself. Always cut away from your body. That's a serious injury waiting to happen and if it happens in the bush you might not make it back out.
Nice to see this type of craftsmanship still exists, great result
Thanks Steve.
You're a creative person, And I've learned a lot from you, Thank you for sharing your skills.
Amazing video and craftsmanship
Thanks bro ; )

Great job!!! Minimal tools as well
Thanks man
Dang I could just stay for the music lol
Very good music. Calming for watching the carving. What wood did you use and was it green or aged and dry? Super carving!
Grey Birch, I debarked and split it and stacked it in my shed and it was pretty dry. Thanks!
Nice work
I like how you kept the bottom flat and square
Thin lip really quality looking
Digg the music
Thanks appreciate it, its taken time for me to dial it down im glad you noticed some of my refinements.
Beautiful work and nice video. My son and I just watched this together.

Grey Birch, yea burl is hard going as the grain can never be used to your advantage in removal. Just have to embrace the suck.
What kind of wood did You use?
Amazing work. What are kuksas used for?
Thanks, watch my last trip seies i posted just before this, they are a mug or bowl. I usually use mine for coffee cups.
and this will be Mitch's last video once his wife gets a hold of him after carving inside the house...LOL.. nice work Mitch
Haha! Ive carved dozens of kuksas and spoons in the house, as long as its swept out the back door and gone she's ok with it lol
Great work and result Mitch! Well done buddy!

you might want to brush up on carving technique. You do sometimes use your knife similar to spoke shave.
What type of wood are you using? Beautiful piece!
Thanks!, Grey Birch
