Such a beautiful day for a drive ❤ love the contrast with the old picture for the grand hotel. Enjoy watching the pictures of the museum , full of old stuff and memories ❤
Beautiful drive Chris! It’s great to see Main Street now, and then see the old historical photos! Quite some history, and a great name for the town! 👌👍👍
Hi Jennifer, yes it’s a town so typical of our many rural service centres dotted across NZ. Although in Auckland terms probably the least successful fringe Auckland town to boom as a satellite suburb. There is a cafe in the middle of the place called “Mr Bon” (don’t ask me why) that has all the old favourite cakes, slices and sandwiches from days gone by at very reasonable prices, it was a huge favourite of my mum when we were out that way. 😀
Interesting and unique history with a connection to Nova Scotia, really cool! Nice share of the buildings and their historic photos. A beautiful sunny day with lots of nice trees, fun jazzy music! The Old Post Office building is especially intriguing to see. 👍👍
Hi, yes I got lucky with the weather our spring being somewhat unsettled 🙁. Like most of the small towns around Auckland it grew off harvesting the big Kauri trees that covered the upper part of the North Island before europeans arrived. The old post office features as a Police Station in our popular crime drama “Brokenwood” which is sold to 179 countries. Most of the filming locations in the drama I’ve covered in various videos. It’s a very quirky extremely kiwi drama currently in its 11th season😀.
Now there's a great Nova Scotia connection!! Got my attention pretty quick on this one! lol Leave it to him to find a place with water to establish a timber mill. Probably got tired of seeing nothing by coal mines!! LOL There's quite a good amount of information on the National Library of New Zealand site. With such a winding river, I wonder if the area has ever experienced some hard floods. A great tour and history lesson for sure!!
Well I never knew that Chris. Been there so many times and unaware of where the name came from. Love the Canadian connection. After the war (WWII) many Europeans including Dutch moved to either Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Some of my relations chose Canada. Looks like Canadians liked New Zealand too. One of my highlights on UA-cam is driving round New Zealand with you. Ka pai Chris, Whakawhetai koe! 🇳🇱🙋♀🥝❤ps. Shared this (I usually do🤣)
hey thanks a lot , yes there are certainly plenty of Dutch people here . A good friend of mine from Christchurch is a first gen kiwi with Dutch parents, I believe her dad was part of the Dutch Resistance in WW2 a pretty hazardous occupation. I’ve had some pretty interesting conversations with her about the differences in cultures between the two.
Love to know the history of the town and enjoy the drive 😊
Yes, definitely one of Aucklands older towns 😀
