Rob - don't feel bad about that shackle failing. In the last years the UK (and the rest of the world) has been flooded with sub standard shakles from the Far East principally China. They look good, same size etc but haven't got the tensile strength particularly if pulled at an angle that they should have. One of the refreshing things about you and Chris is you show your experiences "warts n all" that's what makes me and others value and look forward to watching your channel.
It may be worth considering a set of wheel dollies, which would make these recoveries simple if you take them and a trolley jack. I know it wouldn't have solved the shackle breaking, but dollies are like putting a car on castors. Great video again. The back bumper is actually an easy repair.
Fair play, you did not have to show the damage happening, Adds to your honesty. Enjoy every single vid you put out. Its great to see 2 honest guy's grafting and earning a living. Thank You
If anyone says nasty comments then please don't listen anything that can happen to you at the unexpected time possible if your honest like you so please feel free to continue because I hate just before and after boring nonsense your honesty made me subscribe great stuff boys 👍
I bought my first Peugeot diesel in 1996 and I've had a Pug in the drive ever since - they really are great cars. I had a 406 estate for eight years and it was the best car I've ever owned. Comfort, performance and style 👍 Glad to hear you escaped any serious injury, no real harm done.
Hi Rob, as a retired HGV mechanic I absolutely love the video's, but before you let us know about the exciting barn find can we know when you will next be working on the LSE Each week I wait for you and Chris to finish this project.
Mate count yourself lucky only the motor got damaged !! You can fit a new bumper or light ,you can’t replace a leg or arm , glad you still with us , I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I didn’t have any more salvage rebuild vids to watch !!!
just glad you are ok after the incident......life is an education and I am sure you will find something else to carry in your tool kit so it wont happen again....that is a great buy for someone, you could asked a little bit more to cover the stress caused......
When you pull cars up, always leave the handbrake on - not all the way obviously but just enough to keep some tension, that way if anything breaks it will stop or atleast very slowly roll.
Credit for being so honest on the incident Rob. We've all made mistakes - glad there were no injuries. There are little trolleys available to move cars - don't know if you've seen them but they have 4 little castor wheels and fit around the car wheel. You can then pump them up to lift the car wheel and move it even if the brakes are on. I used to have a flat with reserved parking and the enforcement company used them to move illegally parked cars... .
How did the wheelie bin get there when it wasn’t there to start with? By the looks of that damage I reckon it hit something more solid than a bin. Did it hit there house by chance?
Hi Rob and Chris.. mate, its a damaged light and bumper, your not injured and thats all that matters, (apart from your pride). Nice, cheap car, fully loaded and bullet proof, will sell no problem. Looking forward to the big reveal..!!! Cheers, Alex.
Don’t beat yourself up Rob shit happens! You went after working all day to load a car in an awkward spot on your own - blessing is you didn’t get hurt! It’s a lump of metal you’re not!
Great to see the respectful ribbing and no 'proper' grief in these comments. Everyone drops the ball occasionally, good job you weren't injured or the house damaged, and props to you Rob for holding your hand up. Looks like a great workhorse car, esp for £100!
Rob, admire your honesty, which is why so many of us enjoy the channel. The D shackle looked a bit Mickey Mouse, it should have a SWL embossed on it. Nevertheless another great video. As to the latest barn find project, I’m sure it will be another brilliant series of videos, just one plea, please finish the LSE, and Golf GTI first.
Hi ROB, IF you haven’t already, invest in a set of wheel movers or a beam to use with a trolley jack. That would be so much easier for a job like that. Another idea would be to carry a sleeper type block in case of roll backs. Well done keep up the good work.
You can buy little dolly trays with 4 castors in lidl for 9.99 each just jack the car onto them and it will go anywhere. i have moved a transit van on them , that was blocking my driveway.
When pulling a car up the ramp should put hand brake on enough to still allow the wheels to go round but if the does let go it will stop as soon as it hit flat ground. Regards from an old retired recovery driver. Love your videos.
love your honesty and being open saying about when you have a misshap and holding your hands up, mistakes happen but showing them educated others aswell, great vid as allways
Another great video from my favourite car repair channel 😁 As Chris said accidents happen main thing is you are okay bent metal or in this case broken plastic easier to fix than a bent or broken person. Fair play to admitting it and keeping it in the video. Lots of channels wouldn't one of the many reasons why I really like your channel 😁
£100? Bargain of the century. Autotrader values that at around £880 private sale and £1400 for a dealer sale. Clean inside and loads of bits inc satnav. Peugeots are very under rated. Never let me down and I've driven a few for long periods. Toyotas have stranded me though.
Glad your ok , all good in the end. Little tip, when loading vehicles with mechanical handbrake pull the handbrake on till the vehicle has resistance but still moves then if anything goes wrong it should stop itself.
Worth investing in some slippery Jim's / skiddy bobs we use in recovery to put under wheels to slide them round. And a better strop or winching brothers
I had the saloon version of this years ago, I honestly loved it. The only issue it sometimes had was a dpf warning but a few minutes on the motorway cleared it. Great buy mate.
Get a peugeot 3 button key of kent autos, put your key blade into it and look on the internet as to how you set it up to the car. (turn this turn that lock the door ect)
I love those old Peugeot 407s - I keep a 2005 2.0 HDI saloon in N Ireland to use when I travel over each year. They are a great car for no money! They are a pretty heavy beast though, as you found out - too bad about the bumper damage, but very glad you or no one else was hurt!
Looks a crakin car. Nice colour. Accidents happen, pleased it wasn't any worse. The next owner needs to try Timpsons for a remote key, think they are a national retailer (key cutting and cobblers) . Got one for my insignia for £30 👍
D shackles designed to pull in one direction. A bow shackle will take loads in different directions. If you have the space & length on the wire you could do a double line pull with a snatch or pulley block. But as long as no one was hurt.
Don`t bash yerself up over it Rob. You could have easily edited it out and no one would have known. Poo poo happens and the fact that you showed it says a lot more than you think about your honesty and integrity. There`s millions of untold mistakes, errors, cock ups, faux pas etc that people have done. Every day is a school day and as long as you learn something, it`s progress. Onwards and upwards 😎👍👍👍
You'll not do that again mate, hate to think what would happen to the winch cable if it came flying at you, very lucky you didn't hurt yourself badly, might be worth getting some wheel skates for difficult situations like that perhaps? Looking forward to the epic car, Lancia intergrale ? Oh no it's going to be a Ford isn't it ?
Great video. I admit to getting quite into your background tunes! Good choices- was a bit gutted when you changed to the current one but now I'm liking it. Maybe do a 'Now That's What I Call Salvage Rebuilds' album as next project?
Sixpence shilling half crown manhole cover!......been there done that. Rob don't excuse yourself for being normal. I don't know anyone in the car trade that hasn't had one of those moments...........i think we are all glad you are ok. Top video!
Great video Rob- I don't know if it's any use, but I watched a video a while ago from the Tank Museum where they had to shift a tank with locked tracks, and they did it by covering the floor with fairy liquid and pulling it with another tank!
Don’t stress Rob, it’s majorly annoying but it happens. It’s better that the shakle let’s go (it looks a bit small) before the cable, that’ll cause proper damage. I move all sorts of cars for a living, often dragging them out of barns, garages, compounds etc. I keep four small sheets of plastic and a bottle of fairy to slide cars into position - go jacks take up too much space on the truck for the amount of use they’ll get. To ease the resistance of dragging a car a couple of Maccy D’s trays under the tyres really helps if you are stuck. Anyway, a quality video as always, when’s the big reveal?
I feel really bad for you after your little “mishap” Rob (🤫🤫🤫). We’ve all got our own little mishap stories to tell so just put it down to experience mate. I’m really hoping your barn find turns out to be an old school Ford, especially a 2.8i Capri! So keep up the great work mate 👍👍👍
We used to move big keelboats boats around yards that had fixed trolley wheels by putting 2 BFO trolley jacks under 2 end corners, push it with the tractor and steer the trolley jacks. You can do that with a car. As long as it’s a BFO Jack well located in the centre of front subframe, on smooth ground, you can pull & steer the car to line it up.
Accidents happen, you did it as safely as you could, nobody got hurt and you know what to look and listen for in future. Just think, it could’ve happened to a van you were loading up and caused a lot more damage and cost a lot more money.
you should have bought a couple of dollys and jacked it up onto them.. would have been a lot less hassle.. also - can you not get a new key from the dealers if you show them the V5?
Really good and entertaining video. Shame about the loading incident but these things do happen even to the most careful professionals. Glad you're ok.
Rob, you can’t beat yourself up for accidents, they happen. We all have the capacity to look at things in hindsight and wish we’d done x, y or z differently but, I’m agreeing with Chris here, it’s just one of those unfortunate things because a part failed. Ultimately, you’ve still earned money and you’ve saved a car from scrap, it’s a well spec’d cheap car for someone who needs it to start, stop and go safely and, at that money the cosmetics really don’t matter as much. Looking forward to seeing the mystery project
I'm not gonna jump down and call names , Back in the day we had metal hub cabs flattened and with a lift and push would slide side ways and with the hand brake on would corner like a artic . In my 20-30 I could lift a Corsa Fiesta into a parking space just get the front end in and lift back in. I had An Imp for a year and would lift it on to my knees to change a wheel. Now-a-days the Recovery uses Skates made with shopping trolley wheels something Chris would knock up in an afternoon while you jet ski . Another great video mate you've saved that car from the scrapping pile I wonder if you had used another tow truck would have ate into it a bit more that's why you got your own little Beaver Tail Alloy Bedded with Manual Ramps which is slippery when wet but easy to clean .
Had one of these when they first came out in 2004, cracking car. Looks like an SE model. At least nobody was hurt, just a little pride. Not sure if anyone else had issues with the ads on this one (never had issues before), but I get a black screen watching and unable.to skip. Had to swap to another device. ☹️
little tip, grab a couple of plastic trays (from mc Donald's etc) and lift the rear wheels onto them to make dragging/moving/pushing 100x easier. lightweight and easy to store in the truck too for future jobs where its a bit tight.
Another great vid Rob.! Don't worry accidents happen. We're only human. Loving the quick flip videos. Thinking of starting car flipping myself. Could you do a short video on the legalities and legal licences needed to start trading cars? I'm sure a lot of viewers would also benefit. Once again. Great vid.! Can't wait to see what's under those tarps
Hello Rob and Chris, Here is some stick...or would you prefer a whole branch!! I have a 307 SW, now with over 278000 kms on the clock. Utterly faithful, I've replaced the alternator, temp sensor, and the air-con condensor over 7 years. They do need a good battery because they are stuffed with electronics. Best thing: the auto lights and wipers and cruise control. Worst thing: the gear knob, icy in winter and hot in summer.. Just the right video for my dinnertime!!!! Cordialement,
I had a similar thing happen to me A 12,000 pound rated hook broke. On a tilt trailer that was raised up. My barn find 1989 Pontiac Trans Am GTA rolled off the back and was hung up on the radiator support. Glad you’re not hurt that’s the important thing.
That shackle is too small for the weight mate, get some proper kit and next time you need the wire replacing on the winch get dyneema rope which hasn’t got the recoil wire has! I’m a boatman and work around big ships, I’ve seen what wires and heavy mooring ropes can do when things go bang, even on a small winch like yours you could have been seriously injured or worse mate! Anyway, bloody shame the car was damaged but I’m sure you boys will make it all good again!
Get a couple of 3 ton lifting shackles (not the cheap stuff you chose …. The certified type…they are truly inexpensive….rig an extra hooking point at each of the rear corners of your truck for greater versatility……
That shackle could have been overloaded, or it could be a sub standard item from the far east. In my previous job, I have designed lifting beams etc and bought hundreds of items of lifting tackle. For shackles, I always used Harris Walton of Brierley Hill. When your safety is at stake, it makes sense to use quality tackle.
D links only meant for straight pull - looks like it had a bit of side load on it looking how it had bent - you need a multi swivel shackle if there is any side load - good you are ok that’s the main thing - and it was a cheap car special !!
Fair play to you rob for sharing the accident, just goes to show what kind of an honest man you are and hopefully this will help other recovery people in the future. Your a legend 👌
Wheel skates. Makes you wonder why the owner didnt get a locksmith to cut and code a new key rather than just leave a car for ages then effectively give it away.
Glad you're ok matey. I had a ramp collapse when I was unloading my recovery truck once, it was properly seated etc. I'd braked when I was rolling it off the truck. What a fright I got. Always enjoy your videos and it keeps me motivated to do what I do too (but on a lesser scale to you guys!). Got a Noco jump pack just like your locksmith has, I rate it a lot.
Just for fun I checked gumtree in South Africa for the same car and found the exact same one. It just have about 10th miles less on the clock, but it price is about 2500 pounds. Cannot believe how cheap the cars are in the UK. The cheapest 407 SW for sale here at the moment is 1800 pounds and that is with wiring and suspension problems!
I'm insanely jealous of the cheap prices these cars are going for across the pond. Here in the States the used car market is so topsy-turvy that sometimes low mileage used cars are selling for more than what they'd cost new if only new examples were available. I know that the whole point of the Cheap Car Challenge is to keep the spend as low as possible, but would getting a "proper" key with the remote and fixing the bumper have paid for themselves? Good thing you weren't hurt when it snapped and the car rolled back Rob; that's the only thing that really matters at the end of the day!
Sorry to see the accident Rob don’t be too hard on yourself though that could have happened to anybody.A busted light and bumper on the Peugeot is a far better outcome than if you tripped as it rolled off the truck and went under it’s wheels. So glad to see you came out of it safe and well🙏 Great video again too 👍
Glad ur ok rob after ur mishap..thats the main thing.. A wild guess at the covered car..is it an RS 200..haha....top of the head. Lol..look fwd to its unveiling. Keep up the great vids guys. Love your channel.
great vid, its more interesting because it wasn't plane sailing, for us it makes good viewing, happy no injuries, the shackle looked weak ish, the ones from yester year far more robust and better build quality
Don’t worry Rob,accidents happen, your safe that’s all that matters.Your an honest and hard working bloke and so is Chris is too!video content always great chaps, keep up the great work you do
I don’t think anyone will give you stick, if anything I give you full credit for leaving it in and showing a mistake/accident in the first place and it can only be considered a mistake/accident if you haven’t learnt anything from it. The only thing you could’ve done differently is fit a wireless remote winch and sit in the car covering the brake(s) whilst it’s loaded up, but at least you didn’t run yourself over or get hit with the winch/cable when it snapped, there is a hell of a lot of tension in them.
That D-shackle looks a bit flimsy. We use Crosby bow-shackles at work, they're really good quality, stamped for maximum load and not terribly expensive.
It could have been worse Rob, I work as a HGV car transporter driver, and one of my colleagues had a brand new car roll off his truck and smashed straight in to the cars queued up behind it 🤭 - thankfully no1 was walking behind it at the time.
I am so happy nobody got hurt but one's pride and a bit of profit. That shackle on your snatch block looks like a cheap Chinese made unit. As a journeyman millwright here in Canada I witnessed a similar incident on my worksite which resulted in a colleague getting pinned and seriously injured. The ensuing investigation determined that the shackle was a cheap Chinese knock-off of a Crosbie shackle (only one I will ever use). Cheers from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
I'm originally from the UK, now in Aus. Just picked one up exactly like this (wagon, colour, 2.0 HDi but 6sp auto). One owner, log books, 190k for $4.5k
use Car Vertical and get 10% off with our link here bit.ly/3dCXuwP
Dude the shackle wasn’t tight and the big writing under the bonnet when you lifted it says 1.6 HDI not 2.0 but nice for the money
Thanks very much pal
@@kinn1647 There is no decimal point meaning its 16 meaning 16valve, not 1.6. And thats definitely a 2.0hdi in it.
Never mind the car mate as long as you’re in one piece that’s all that matters you’re pride will soon heal cheers take care out there 😎👍

Cant believe you’ve never bought a pair of dolleys what you put under front wheels to steer , most important thing is you’re still here 🙂
Hi Rob, both of my vans are cat s and on Car Vertical it doesn't give any indication of the damage on either vehicle.
Just to clarify it does state they are accident damaged but doesn't give any details of the level of damage.
Hello Rob and Chris,
Here is some stick...or would you prefer a whole branch!!
Cordialement,
Am sure they are 1.6 16v diesel not 2.0L glad you got it started👍😁
2.0 "16v" which is on the cover
I had a similar thing happen to me A 12,000 pound rated hook broke. On a tilt trailer that was raised up. My barn find 1989 Pontiac Trans Am GTA rolled off the back and was hung up on the radiator support. Glad you’re not hurt that’s the important thing.
Why not use a jack and wheel dollies in cases like this?
Hi Rob. Thanks again. Another keeping it real video. The main thing is you're OK. Looking forward to the barn find.
As long as your ok. Thats all that matters. Could have been a lot worse. Thankfully not. Keep up the good work/content.
Got to admit I laughed out loud when it rolled 😂
D links only meant for straight pull - looks like it had a bit of side load on it looking how it had bent - you need a multi swivel shackle if there is any side load - good you are ok that’s the main thing - and it was a cheap car special !!
Accidents happen more importantly you learn by it..
Really do enjoy these videos Rob. You really do some cracking little bargain cars.
Lucky escape there mate.
Yeah, feels a bit like the old Rolls owners' joke "I used the ashtray today. Where can I get it replaced?", doesn't it?
Glad you're ok matey. I had a ramp collapse when I was unloading my recovery truck once, it was properly seated etc. I'd braked when I was rolling it off the truck. What a fright I got. Always enjoy your videos and it keeps me motivated to do what I do too (but on a lesser scale to you guys!). Got a Noco jump pack just like your locksmith has, I rate it a lot.
Rob to try and stop the car was foolish. If you injured yourself in the process it could of easily cost you lots of money from being unable to work.
Instinct
Just for fun I checked gumtree in South Africa for the same car and found the exact same one. It just have about 10th miles less on the clock, but it price is about 2500 pounds. Cannot believe how cheap the cars are in the UK. The cheapest 407 SW for sale here at the moment is 1800 pounds and that is with wiring and suspension problems!
Looks like the shackle pin wasn't screwed in.
Diesel estate, reasonable miles & full mot - bargain !
Sorry to see the accident Rob don’t be too hard on yourself though that could have happened to anybody.A busted light and bumper on the Peugeot is a far better outcome than if you tripped as it rolled off the truck and went under it’s wheels. So glad to see you came out of it safe and well🙏 Great video again too 👍
Looks like it probably did hit the house. A wheelie bin wouldn't cause that much damage.
Glad ur ok rob after ur mishap..thats the main thing..
A wild guess at the covered car..is it an RS 200..haha....top of the head.
Lol..look fwd to its unveiling.
Keep up the great vids guys. Love your channel.
Without a doubt, that car hit the house.
There's no way it hit the bin, they we're down the drive by the garage 😂
Yep
And the shackle wasn't done up, that's why it bent
@@chriscollins1704 100%
Yeah that would have to be from a concrete to make this damage. It was the house but whatever as long as no one got hurt
great vid, its more interesting because it wasn't plane sailing, for us it makes good viewing, happy no injuries, the shackle looked weak ish, the ones from yester year far more robust and better build quality
How did you and Chris meet and end up working together ?
We have been friends 20 years 👍
Don’t worry Rob,accidents happen, your safe that’s all that matters.Your an honest and hard working bloke and so is Chris is too!video content always great chaps, keep up the great work you do
I don’t think anyone will give you stick, if anything I give you full credit for leaving it in and showing a mistake/accident in the first place and it can only be considered a mistake/accident if you haven’t learnt anything from it. The only thing you could’ve done differently is fit a wireless remote winch and sit in the car covering the brake(s) whilst it’s loaded up, but at least you didn’t run yourself over or get hit with the winch/cable when it snapped, there is a hell of a lot of tension in them.
I’m using a wireless remote I had to be outside watching as the steering lock was on and it was left hand down 👍
My mistake, sorry Chief, shouldn’t have doubted you for a second.
That D-shackle looks a bit flimsy. We use Crosby bow-shackles at work, they're really good quality, stamped for maximum load and not terribly expensive.
Spend your profit on a set of dollies, lucky escape matey 👍
It could have been worse Rob, I work as a HGV car transporter driver, and one of my colleagues had a brand new car roll off his truck and smashed straight in to the cars queued up behind it 🤭 - thankfully no1 was walking behind it at the time.
Bloody hell £600 quid is cheap as Chip's .
600 wow that's cheap. That car would be at least 6-7 K or more here in Australia
I'm originally from the UK, now in Aus. Just picked one up exactly like this (wagon, colour, 2.0 HDi but 6sp auto).
One owner, log books, 190k for $4.5k
